This paper studies the virtual $\chi_{-y}$-genera of Grothendieck's Quot schemes on surfaces, thus refining the calculations of the virtual Euler characteristics by Oprea-Pandharipande. We first prove a structural result expressing the equivariant virtual $\chi_{-y}$-genera of Quot schemes universally in terms of the Seiberg-Witten invariants. The formula is simpler for curve classes of Seiberg-Witten length $N$, which are defined in the paper. By way of application, we give complete answers in the following cases: (i) arbitrary surfaces for the zero curve class, (ii) relatively minimal elliptic surfaces for rational multiples of the fiber class, (iii) minimal surfaces of general type with $p_g>0$ for any curve classes. Furthermore, a blow up formula is obtained for curve classes of Seiberg-Witten length $N$. As a result of these calculations, we prove that the generating series of the virtual $\chi_{-y}$-genera are given by rational functions for all surfaces with $p_g>0$, addressing a conjecture of Oprea-Pandharipande. In addition, we study the reduced $\chi_{-y}$-genera for $K3$ surfaces and primitive curve classes with connections to the Kawai-Yoshioka formula., Comment: 48 pages. In this note we point out an error in [2]. We show how to repair the proof in dimension 5. The results are true in general as can easily be seen from recent work of Borman, Eliashberg and Murphy [1]. The proof of Lemma 3.4 in [2] is incorrect. Below we will describe the problem with the proof and then show how it can easily be repaired in dimension 5. We then observe that Lemma 3.4, and thus the main results of the paper, is true in all dimensions based on recent work of Borman, Eliashberg and Murphy [1]. However this approach does not give an explicit construction and hence goes against the sprit of the original paper and in addition all the results of [2] follow directly from [1]. This paper is devoted to one-dimensional interpolation Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities. We study how various notions of duality, transport and monotonicity of functionals along flows defined by some nonlinear diffusion equations apply. We start by reducing the inequality to a much simpler dual variational problem using mass transportation theory. Our second main result is devoted to the construction of a Lyapunov functional associated with a nonlinear diffusion equation, that provides an alternative proof of the inequality. The key observation is that the inequality on the line is equivalent to Sobolev's inequality on the sphere, at least when the dimension is an integer, or to the critical interpolation inequality for the ultraspherical operator in the general case. The time derivative of the functional along the flow is itself very interesting. It explains the machinery of some rigidity estimates for nonlinear elliptic equations and shows how eigenvalues of a linearized problem enter in the computations. We give a possible generalization of Lutz twist to all dimensions. This reproves the fact that every contact manifold can be given a non-fillable contact structure and also shows great flexibility in the manifolds that can be realized as cores of overtwisted families. We moreover show that $R^{2n+1}$ has at least three distinct contact structures. For a smooth projective curve, the cycles of e-secant k-planes are among the most studied objects in classical enumerative geometry and there are well-known formulas due to Castelnuovo, Cayley and MacDonald concerning them. Despite various attempts, surprisingly little is known about the enumerative validity of such formulas. The aim of this paper is to completely clarify this problem in the case of the generic curve C of given genus. Using degeneration techniques and a few facts about the birational geometry of moduli spaces of stable pointed curves we determine precisely under which conditions the cycle of e-secant k-planes in non-empty and we compute its dimension. We also precisely determine the dimension of the variety of linear series on C carrying e-secant k-planes. In a different direction, in the last part of the paper we study the distribution of ramification points of the powers of a line bundle on C having prescribed ramification at a given point., Comment: 25 pages. A partial linear space is a pair $(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{L})$ where $\mathcal{P}$ is a non-empty set of points and $\mathcal{L}$ is a collection of subsets of $\mathcal{P}$ called lines such that any two distinct points are contained in at most one line, and every line contains at least two points. A partial linear space is proper when it is not a linear space or a graph. A group of automorphisms $G$ of a proper partial linear space acts transitively on ordered pairs of distinct collinear points and ordered pairs of distinct non-collinear points precisely when $G$ is transitive of rank 3 on points. In this paper, we classify the finite proper partial linear spaces that admit rank 3 affine primitive automorphism groups, except for certain families of small groups, including subgroups of $A\Gamma L_1(q)$. Up to these exceptions, this completes the classification of the finite proper partial linear spaces admitting rank 3 primitive automorphism groups. We also provide a more detailed version of the classification of the rank 3 affine primitive permutation groups, which may be of independent interest., Comment: In this version, we have removed the assumption $V\leq H$ from 18.1 (old 13.2) and we have a new elementary proof of 10.10 (old 13.1). The mod two cohomology of the three connective covering of S3 has the form F2[X2n] ⊗ E(Sq1X2n) where x2n is in degree 2n and n = 2. If F denotes the homotopy theoretic fibre of the map S3 → B2S1 of degree 2, then the mod 2 cohomology of F is also of the same form for n = 1. Notice (cf. Section 7 of the present paper) that the existence of spaces whose cohomology has this form for high values of n would immediately provide Arf invariant elements in the stable stem. Hence, it is worthwhile to determine for what values of n the above algebra can be realized as the mod2 cohomology of some space. The purpose of this paper is to construct a further example of a space with such a cohomology algebra for n = 4 and to show that no other values of n are admissible. More precisely, we prove the following.

The deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation is a special Lagrangian type condition in complex geometry. It requires the complex analogue of the Lagrangian phase, defined for Chern connections on holomorphic line bundles using a background K\"ahler metric, to be constant. In this paper we introduce and study dHYM equations with variable K\"ahler metric. These are coupled equations involving both the Lagrangian phase and the radius function, at the same time. They are obtained by using the extended gauge group to couple the moment map interpretation of dHYM connections, due to Collins-Yau and mirror to Thomas' moment map for special Lagrangians, to the Donaldson-Fujiki picture of scalar curvature as a moment map. As a consequence one expects that solutions should satisfy a mixture of K-stability and Bridgeland-type stability. In special limits, or in special cases, we recover the K\"ahler-Yang-Mills system of \'Alvarez-C\'onsul, Garcia-Fernandez and Garc\'ia-Prada, and the coupled K\"ahler-Einstein equations of Hultgren-Witt Nystr\"om. After establishing several general results we focus on the equations and their large/small radius limits on abelian varieties, with a source term, following ideas of Feng and Sz\'ekelyhidi., Comment: 42 pages, some corrections to Section 4

In this paper, we compute the cohomology class of certain "special maximal-rank loci" originally defined by Aprodu and Farkas. By showing that such classes are nonzero, we are able to verify the non-emptiness portion of the Strong Maximal Rank Conjecture in a wide range of cases. As an application, we obtain new evidence for the existence portion of a well-known conjecture due to Bertram, Feinberg and independently Mukai in higher-rank Brill--Noether theory., 38 pages, significantly reorganized final version to appear in J. The aim of this paper is to analyze a model for chemotaxis based on a local sensing mechanism instead of the gradient sensing mechanism used in the celebrated minimal Keller-Segel model. The model we study has the same entropy as the minimal Keller-Segel model, but a different dynamics to minimize this entropy. Consequently, the conditions on the mass for the existence of stationary solutions or blow-up are the same, however we make the interesting observation that with the local sensing mechanism the blow-up in the case of supercritical mass is delayed to infinite time. Our observation is made rigorous from a mathematical point via a proof of global existence of weak solutions for arbitrary large masses and space dimension. The key difference of our model to the minimal Keller-Segel model is that the structure of the equation allows for a duality estimate that implies a bound on the $(H^1)'$-norm of the solutions, which can only grow with a square-root law in time. This additional $(H^1)'$-bound implies a lower bound on the entropy, which contrasts markedly with the minimal Keller-Segel model for which it is unbounded from below in the supercritical case. Besides, regularity and uniqueness of solutions are also studied.

Let $\epsilon_1, \dotsc, \epsilon_n$ be i.i.d. Rademacher random variables taking values $\pm 1$ with probability $1/2$ each. Given an integer vector $\boldsymbol{a} = (a_1, \dotsc, a_n)$, its concentration probability is the quantity $\rho(\boldsymbol{a}):=\sup_{x\in \mathbb{Z}}\Pr(\epsilon_1 a_1+\dots+\epsilon_n a_n = x)$. The Littlewood-Offord problem asks for bounds on $\rho(\boldsymbol{a})$ under various hypotheses on $\boldsymbol{a}$, whereas the inverse Littlewood-Offord problem, posed by Tao and Vu, asks for a characterization of all vectors $\boldsymbol{a}$ for which $\rho(\boldsymbol{a})$ is large. In this paper, we study the associated counting problem: How many integer vectors $\boldsymbol{a}$ belonging to a specified set have large $\rho(\boldsymbol{a})$? The motivation for our study is that in typical applications, the inverse Littlewood-Offord theorems are only used to obtain such counting estimates. Using a more direct approach, we obtain significantly better bounds for this problem than those obtained using the inverse Littlewood--Offord theorems of Tao and Vu and of Nguyen and Vu. Moreover, we develop a framework for deriving upper bounds on the probability of singularity of random discrete matrices that utilizes our counting result. To illustrate the methods, we present the first `exponential-type' (i.e., $\exp(-n^c)$ for some positive constant $c$) upper bounds on the singularity probability for the following two models: (i) adjacency matrices of dense signed random regular digraphs, for which the previous best known bound is $O(n^{-1/4})$ due to Cook; and (ii) dense row-regular $\{0,1\}$-matrices, for which the previous best known bound is $O_{C}(n^{-C})$ for any constant $C>0$ due to Nguyen.

The paper is on the vanishing topology of singular Milnor fibres of holomorphic families of arbitrary square, symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices with sufficiently many parameters. We define vanishing cycles on such fibres, prove an extended form of the Damon-Pike $\mu=\tau$ conjecture about the families of a special type, and make first steps towards understading of the monodromy of matrix singularities. We also prove a Lyashko-Looijenga type theorem for simple matrix families, and point out a surprising relationship between certain Shephard-Todd groups, simple odd functions and a sporadic part of the Bruce-Tari simple matrix classification.

In this paper, we consider discrete groups in ${\rm PGL}_d(\mathbb{R})$ acting convex co-compactly on a properly convex domain in real projective space. For such groups, we establish an analogue of the well known flat torus theorem for ${\rm CAT}(0)$ spaces., Minor revisions, to appear in the Journal of the London Mathematical Society. 20 pages. Let $\mathscr J$ be the set of inner functions whose derivative lies in the Nevanlinna class. In this paper, we discuss a natural topology on $\mathscr J$ where $F_n \to F$ if the critical structures of $F_n$ converge to the critical structure of $F$. We show that this occurs precisely when the critical structures of the $F_n$ are uniformly concentrated on Korenblum stars. The proof uses Liouville's correspondence between holomorphic self-maps of the unit disk and solutions of the Gauss curvature equation. Building on the works of Korenblum and Roberts, we show that this topology also governs the behaviour of invariant subspaces of a weighted Bergman space which are generated by a single inner function., 45 pages

This paper considers the propagation of TE‐modes in photonic crystal waveguides. The waveguide is created by introducing a linear defect into a periodic background medium. Both the periodic background problem and the perturbed problem are modelled by a divergence type equation. A feature of our analysis is that we allow discontinuities in the coefficients of the operator, which is required to model many photonic crystals. Using the Floquet–Bloch theory in negative‐order Sobolev spaces, we characterize the precise number of eigenvalues created by the line defect in terms of the band functions of the original periodic background medium for arbitrarily weak defects.

ith respect to the analytic‐algebraic dichotomy, the theory of Siegel modular forms of half‐integral weight is lopsided; the analytic theory is strong, whereas the algebraic lags behind. In this paper, we capitalise on this to establish the fundamental object needed for the analytic side of the Iwasawa main conjecture — the p ‐adic L ‐function obtained by interpolating the complex L ‐function at special values. This is achieved through the Rankin–Selberg method and the explicit Fourier expansion of non‐holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series. The construction of the p ‐stabilisation in this setting is also of independent interest.

Let G be a group, and let M=(m_n) be a sequence of finitely supported probability measures on G. Consider the probability that two elements chosen independently according to m_n commute. Antolin, Martino and Ventura define the 'degree of commutativity' dc_M(G) of G with respect to this sequence to be the lim sup of this probability. The main results of the present paper give quantitative algebraic consequences of the degree of commutativity being above certain thresholds. For example, if m_n is the distribution of the nth step of a symmetric random walk on G, or if G is amenable and (m_n) is a sequence of almost-invariant measures on G, we show that if dc_M(G) is at least a>0 then G contains a normal subgroup G' of index f(a) and a normal subgroup H of cardinality at most g(a) such that G'/H is abelian. This generalises a result for finite groups due to P. M. Neumann, and generalises and quantifies a result for certain residually finite groups of subexponential growth due to Antolin, Martino and Ventura. We also describe some general conditions on M under which such theorems hold. We close with an application to 'conjugacy ratios' as introduced by Cox., 18 pages. International audience; Orbital varieties are the irreducible components of the intersection between a nilpotent orbit and a Borel subalgebra of the Lie algebra of a reductive group. There is a geometric correspondence between orbital varieties and irreducible components of Springer fibers. In type A, a construction due to Richardson implies that every nilpotent orbit contains at least one smooth orbital variety and every Springer fiber contains at least one smooth component. In this paper, we show that this property is also true for the other classical cases. Our proof uses the interpretation of Springer fibers as varieties of isotropic flags and van Leeuwen's parametrization of their components in terms of domino tableaux. In the exceptional cases, smooth orbital varieties do not arise in every nilpotent orbit, as already noted by Spaltenstein. We however give a (nonexhaustive) list of nilpotent orbits which have this property. Our treatment of exceptional cases relies on an induction procedure for orbital varieties, similar to the induction procedure for nilpotent orbits.

The seminal Lee-Yang theorem states that for any graph the zeros of the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model lie on the unit circle in $\mathbb C$. In fact the union of the zeros of all graphs is dense on the unit circle. In this paper we study the location of the zeros for the class of graphs of bounded maximum degree $d\geq 3$, both in the ferromagnetic and the anti-ferromagnetic case. We determine the location exactly as a function of the inverse temperature and the degree $d$. An important step in our approach is to translate to the setting of complex dynamics and analyze a dynamical system that is naturally associated to the partition function., 24 pages, 3 figures. In the present paper, we prove, for a large class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, the existence of an explicit infinite family of quadratic twists with analytic rank $0$. In addition, we establish the $2$-part of the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for many of these infinite families of quadratic twists. Recently, Xin Wan has used our results to prove for the first time the full Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for some explicit infinite families of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication.

Adjoint functor theorems give necessary and sufficient conditions for a functor to admit an adjoint. In this paper, we prove general adjoint functor theorems for functors between ∞‐categories. One of our main results is an ∞‐categorical generalization of Freyd's classical General Adjoint Functor Theorem. As an application of this result, we recover Lurie's adjoint functor theorems for presentable ∞‐categories. We also discuss the comparison between adjunctions of ∞‐categories and homotopy adjunctions, and give a treatment of Brown representability for ∞‐categories based on Heller's purely categorical formulation of the classical Brown representability theorem.

A biperiodic alternating link has an alternating quotient link in the thickened torus. In this paper, we focus on semi-regular links, a class of biperiodic alternating links whose hyperbolic structure can be immediately determined from a corresponding Euclidean tiling. Consequently, we determine the exact volumes of semi-regular links. We relate their commensurability and arithmeticity to the corresponding tiling, and assuming a conjecture of Milnor, we show there exist infinitely many pairwise incommensurable semi-regular links with the same invariant trace field. We show that only two semi-regular links have totally geodesic checkerboard surfaces; these two links satisfy the Volume Density Conjecture. Finally, we give conditions implying that many additional biperiodic alternating links are hyperbolic and admit a positively oriented, unimodular geometric triangulation. Given an iterated function system (IFS) of contractive similitudes, the theory of Gromov hyperbolic graph on the IFS has been established recently. In the paper, we introduce a notion of simple augmented tree which is a Gromov hyperbolic graph. By generalizing a combinatorial device of rearrangeable matrix, we show that there exists a near-isometry between the simple augmented tree and the symbolic space of the IFS, so that their hyperbolic boundaries are Lipschitz equivalent. We then apply this to consider the Lipschitz equivalence of self-similar sets with or without assuming the open set condition. Moreover, we also provide a criterion for a self-similar set to be a Cantor-type set which completely answers an open question raised in \cite{LaLu13}. Our study extends the previous works.

We identify subsets of the joint numerical range of an operator tuple in terms of its joint spectrum. This result helps us to transfer weak convergence of operator orbits into certain approximation and interpolation properties for powers in the uniform operator topology. This is a far-reaching generalization of one of the main results in our recent paper posted as arXiv:1607.00040. Moreover, it yields an essential (but partial) generalization of Bourin's "pinching" theorem. It also allows us to revisit several basic results on joint numerical ranges, provide them with new proofs and find a number of new results.

Kato introduced the exotic nilpotent cone to be a substitute for the ordinary nilpotent cone of type C with cleaner properties. Here we describe the irreducible components of exotic Springer fibres (the fibres of the resolution of the exotic nilpotent cone), and prove that they are naturally in bijection with standard bitableaux. As a result, we deduce the existence of an exotic Robinson–Schensted bijection, which is a variant of the type C Robinson–Schensted bijection between pairs of same-shape standard bitableaux and elements of the Weyl group; this bijection is described explicitly in the sequel to this paper. Note that this is in contrast with ordinary type C Springer fibres, where the parametrisation of irreducible components, and the resulting geometric Robinson–Schensted bijection, are more complicated. As an application, we explicitly describe the structure in the special cases where the irreducible components of theexotic Springer fibre have dimension 2, and show that in those cases one obtains Hirzebruch surfaces.

Schottky groups are exactly those Kleinian groups providing the regular lowest planar uniformizations of closed Riemann surfaces and also the ones providing to the interior of a handlebody of a complete hyperbolic structure with injectivity radius bounded away from zero. The space parametrizing quasiconformal deformations of Schottky groups of a fixed rank $g \geq 1$ is the marked Schottky space ${\mathcal M}{\mathcal S}_{g}$; this being a complex manifold of dimension $3(g-1)$ for $g \geq 2$ and being isomorphic to the punctured unit disc for $g=1$. In this paper we provide a complete description of the real structures of ${\mathcal M}{\mathcal S}_{g}$, up to holomorphic automorphisms, together their real part.

It is known that the weights of a complex weighted homogeneous polynomial $f$ with isolated singularity are analytic invariants of $(\mathbb C^d,f^{-1}(0))$. When $d=2,3$ this result holds by assuming merely the topological type instead of the analytic one. G. Fichou and T. Fukui recently proved the following real counterpart: the blow-Nash type of a real singular non-degenerate convenient weighted homogeneous polynomial in three variables determines its weights. The aim of this paper is to generalize the above-cited result with no condition on the number of variables. We work with a characterization of the blow-Nash equivalence called the arc-analytic equivalence. It is an equivalence relation on Nash function germs with no continuous moduli which may be seen as a semialgebraic version of the blow-analytic equivalence of T.-C. Kuo.

A polynomial lemniscate is a curve in the complex plane defined by $\{z \in \mathbb{C}:|p(z)|=t\}$. Erd\"os, Herzog, and Piranian posed the extremal problem of determining the maximum length of a lemniscate $\Lambda=\{ z \in \mathbb{C}:|p(z)|=1\}$ when $p$ is a monic polynomial of degree $n$. In this paper, we study the length and topology of a random lemniscate whose defining polynomial has independent Gaussian coefficients. In the special case of the Kac ensemble we show that the length approaches a nonzero constant as $n \rightarrow \infty$. We also show that the average number of connected components is asymptotically $n$, and we observe a positive probability (independent of $n$) of a giant component occurring.

A curve θ:I→E in a metric space E equipped with the distance d, where I⊂R is a (possibly unbounded) interval, is called self-contracted, if for any triple of instances of time {ti}i=13⊂I with t1⩽t2⩽t3 one has d(θ(t3),θ(t2))⩽d(θ(t3),θ(t1)). We prove that if E is a finite-dimensional normed space with an arbitrary norm, the trace of θ is bounded, then θ has finite length, that is, is rectifiable, thus answering positively the question raised in Lemenant's paper [‘Rectifiability of non Euclidean planar self-contracted curves’, Confluentes Math. 8 (2016) 23–38].

We implement the program outlined in Section 7 of our earlier paper [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 27 (2014) 1147–1168] extending to the case of nonsimply laced simple Lie algebras the construction of solutions of q-difference Toda equations from geometry of quasimaps' spaces. To this end we introduce and study the twisted zastava spaces.

A Newton-Okounkov body is a convex body constructed from a polarized variety with a valuation on its function field. Kaveh (resp., the first author and Naito) proved that the Newton-Okounkov body of a Schubert variety associated with a specific valuation is identical to the Littelmann string polytope (resp., the Nakashima-Zelevinsky polyhedral realization) of a Demazure crystal. These specific valuations are defined algebraically to be the highest term valuations with respect to certain local coordinate systems on a Bott-Samelson variety. Another class of valuations, which is geometrically natural, arises from some sequence of subvarieties of a polarized variety. In this paper, we show that the highest term valuation used by Kaveh (resp., by the first author and Naito) and the valuation coming from a sequence of specific subvarieties of the Schubert variety are identical on a perfect basis with some positivity properties. The existence of such a perfect basis follows from a categorification of the negative part of the quantized enveloping algebra. As a corollary, we prove that the associated Newton-Okounkov bodies coincide through an explicit affine transformation.

Weak amenability of discrete groups was introduced by Haagerup and co-authors in the 1980's. It is an approximation property known to be stable under direct products and free products. In this paper we show that graph products of weakly amenable discrete groups are weakly amenable (with Cowling-Haagerup constant 1). Along the way we construct a wall space associated to the word length structure of a graph product and also give a method for extending completely bounded functions on discrete groups to a completely bounded function on their graph product.

Stable subgroups and the Morse boundary are two systematic approaches to collect and study the hyperbolic aspects of finitely generated groups. In this paper we unify and generalize these strategies by viewing any geodesic metric space as a countable union of stable subspaces: we show that every stable subgroup is a quasi--convex subset of a set in this collection and that the Morse boundary is recovered as the direct limit of the usual Gromov boundaries of these hyperbolic subspaces. We use this approach, together with results of Leininger--Schleimer, to deduce that there is no purely geometric obstruction to the existence of a non-virtually--free convex cocompact subgroup of a mapping class group. In addition, we define two new quasi--isometry invariant notions of dimension: the stable dimension, which measures the maximal asymptotic dimension of a stable subset; and the Morse capacity dimension, which naturally generalises Buyalo's capacity dimension for boundaries of hyperbolic spaces. We prove that every stable subset of a right--angled Artin group is quasi--isometric to a tree; and that the stable dimension of a mapping class group is bounded from above by a multiple of the complexity of the surface. In the case of relatively hyperbolic groups we show that finite stable dimension is inherited from peripheral subgroups. Finally, we show that all classical small cancellation groups and certain Gromov monster groups have stable dimension at most 2., Updated with comments from the referee. For integers n >= s >= 2 let e (n, s) denote the maximum of vertical bar F vertical bar, where F is a family of subsets of an n- element set and F contains no s pairwise disjoint members. Half a century ago, solving a conjecture of Erd. os, Kleitman determined e(sm - 1, s) and e (sm, s) for all m, s >= 1. During the years very little progress in the general case was made. In the present paper we state a general conjecture concerning the value of e(sm - l, m) for 1 s(0) (l, m). For l = 2 we determine the value of e(sm - 2, m) for all s >= 5. Some related results shedding light on the problem from a more general context are also proved.

We show that a semibounded Wiener-Hopf quadratic form is closable in the space $L^2({\Bbb R}_{+})$ if and only if its integral kernel is the Fourier transform of an absolutely continuous measure. This allows us to define semibounded Wiener-Hopf operators and their symbols under minimal assumptions on their integral kernels. Our proof relies on a continuous analogue of the Riesz Brothers theorem obtained in the paper.

In this paper, we study homological dimensions of algebras linked by recollements of derived module categories, and establish a series of new upper bounds and relationships among their finitistic or global dimensions. This is closely related to a longstanding conjecture, the finitistic dimension conjecture, in representation theory and homological algebra. Further, we apply our results to a series of situations of particular interest: exact contexts, ring extensions, trivial extensions, pullbacks of rings, and algebras induced from Auslander-Reiten sequences. In particular, we not only extend and amplify Happel’s reduction techniques for finitistic dimenson conjecture to more general contexts, but also generalise some recent results in the literature.

We describe a highly efficient numerical scheme for finding two-sided bounds for the eigenvalues of the fractional Laplace operator (−Δ)α/2 in the unit ball D⊂Rd, with a Dirichlet condition in the complement of D. The standard Rayleigh–Ritz variational method is used for the upper bounds, while the lower bounds involve the lesser known Aronszajn method of intermediate problems. Both require explicit expressions for the fractional Laplace operator applied to a linearly dense set of functions in L2(D). We use appropriate Jacobi-type orthogonal polynomials, which were studied in a companion paper (B. Dyda, A. Kuznetsov and M. Kwaśnicki, ‘Fractional Laplace operator and Meijer G-function’, Constr. Approx., to appear, doi:10.1007/s00365-016-9336-4). Our numerical scheme can be applied analytically when polynomials of degree two are involved. This is used to partially resolve the conjecture of Kulczycki, which claims that the second smallest eigenvalue corresponds to an antisymmetric function: we prove that this is the case when either d⩽2 and α∈(0,2], or d⩽9 and α=1, and we provide strong numerical evidence for d⩽9 and general α∈(0,2].

We investigate the first moment of the difference between $\psi(x;q,a)$ and Vaughan's approximation, in a certain range of $q$. We show that this last approximation is significantly more precise than the classical $x/\phi(q)$, and that it captures the discrepancies of the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions found in an earlier paper of the author.

This paper studies a partial order on the general linear group GL(V) called the absolute order, derived from viewing GL(V) as a group generated by reflections, that is, elements whose fixed space has codimension one. The absolute order on GL(V) is shown to have two equivalent descriptions, one via additivity of length for factorizations into reflections, the other via additivity of fixed space codimensions. Other general properties of the order are derived, including self-duality of its intervals. Working over a finite field F_q, it is shown via a complex character computation that the poset interval from the identity to a Singer cycle (or any regular elliptic element) in GL_n(F_q) has a strikingly simple formula for the number of chains passing through a prescribed set of ranks., Comment: 26 pages. v2: Minor edits; Question 6.3 and some references added

The aim of this paper is to deal with the nonlocal fractional counterpart of the Laplace equation involving critical nonlinearities studied by Brezis and Nirenberg. Namely, our model is the equation (−Δ)psu=|u|ps∗−2u+λg(x,u)inΩu=0inRn∖Ω, where (−Δ)ps is the fractional p–Laplace operator, s∈(0,1), Ω is an open bounded set of Rn, 2s⩽ps 0 is a real parameter, ps∗:=pn/(n−ps) is a fractional critical Sobolev exponent, and g is a subcritical nonlinearity. In this setting, through variational techniques, we prove the existence of one weak solution for the above problem provided that λ is sufficiently small. In addition, if the perturbation term g vanishes at the origin, a multiplicity result is established. Finally, we emphasize that the summability exponent p in the results presented here should be greater than or equal to 2.

In this paper, we first prove the metric approximation property for weighted mixed-norm L (p1,...,pn) w spaces. Using Gabor frame representation, this implies that the same property holds in weighted modulation and Wiener amalgam spaces. As a consequence, Grothendieck’s theory becomes applicable, and we give criteria for nuclearity and r-nuclearity for operators acting on these spaces as well as derive the corresponding trace formulae. Finally, we apply the notion of nuclearity to functions of the harmonic oscillator on modulation spaces.

We investigate suitable conditions for a C0-semigroup (T(t))t≥0 of Hilbert space contractions to be unitarily equivalent to the restriction of the adjoint shift semigroup (S∗γ(t))t≥0 to an invariant subspace of the standard weighted Bergman space Aγ−2(C+,K). It turns out that (T(t))t≥0 admits a model by (S∗γ(t))t≥0 if and only if its cogenerator is γ-hypercontractive and limt→0T(t)=0 in strong operator topology. We then discuss how such semigroups can be characterized without involving the cogenerator. A sufficient condition is that, for each t>0, the operator T(t) is γ-hypercontractive. Surprisingly, this condition is necessary if and only if γ is integer. The paper is concluded with a conjecture that would imply a more symmetric characterization. (Less)

In this paper, we count factorizations of Coxeter elements in well-generated complex reflection groups into products of reflections. We obtain a simple product formula for the exponential generating function of such factorizations, which is expressed uniformly in terms of natural parameters of the group. In the case of factorizations of minimal length, we recover a formula due to P. Deligne, J. Tits and D. Zagier in the real case and to D. Bessis in the complex case. The classical embedding theorem of Carleson deals with finite positive Borel measures $\mu$ on the closed unit disk for which there exists a positive constant $c$ such that $|f|_{L^2(\mu)} \leq c |f|_{H^2}$ for all $f \in H^2$, the Hardy space of the unit disk. Lef\'evre et al. examined measures $\mu$ for which there exists a positive constant $c$ such that $\|f\|_{L^2(\mu)} \geq c |f|_{H^2}$ for all $f \in H^2$. The first type of inequality above was explored with $H^2$ replaced by one of the model spaces $(\Theta H^2)^{\perp}$ by Aleksandrov, Baranov, Cohn, Treil, and Volberg. International audience; We build a coding of the trajectories of billiards in regular 2n-gons, similar but different from the one in [16], by applying the self-dual induction [9] to the underlying one-parameter family of n-interval exchange transformations. This allows us to show that, in that family, for n = 3 non-periodicity is enough to guarantee weak mixing, and in some cases minimal self-joinings, and for every n we can build examples of n-interval exchange transformations with weak mixing, which are the first known explicitly for n > 6. In [16], see also [15], John Smillie and Corinna Ulcigrai develop a rich and original theory of billiards in the regular octagons, and more generally of billiards in the regular 2n-gons, first studied by Veech [17]: their aim is to build explicitly the symbolic trajectories, which generalize the famous Sturmian sequences (see for example [1] among a huge literature), and they achieve it through a new renormalization process which generalizes the usual continued fraction algorithm. In the present shorter paper, we show that similar results, with new consequences, can be obtained by using an existing, though recent, theory, the self-dual induction on interval exchange transformations. As in [16], we define a trajectory of a billiard in a regular 2n-gon as a path which starts in the interior of the polygon, and moves with constant velocity until it hits the boundary, then it re-enters the polygon at the corresponding point of the parallel side, and continues travelling with the same velocity; we label each pair of parallel sides with a letter of the alphabet (A 1 , ...A n), and read the labels of the pairs of parallel sides crossed by the trajectory as time increases; studying these trajectories is known to be equivalent to studying the trajectories of a one-parameter family of n-interval exchange transformations, and to this family we apply a slightly modified version of the self-dual induction defined in [9]. Now, the self-dual induction is in general not easy to manipulate, as its states are a family of graphs, and its typical itineraries, or paths in the so-called graph of graphs, are quite complicated to describe; but in our main Theorem 7 below, we show that for any non-periodic n-interval exchange in this particular family, after at most 2n − 2 steps our self-dual induction goes back, up to small modifications, to the initial state of another member of the family. This gives us a renormalization process, which differs from the one in [16] essentially because it is applied to lengths of intervals instead of angles, and allows us to compute the whole itinerary of the original interval exchange transformation under the self-dual induction in function of a single sequence of integers between 1 and 2n − 1, which act as the partial quotients of a continued fraction algorithm applied to initial lengths of subintervals.

The paper is motivated by an analogy between cluster algebras and Kac-Moody algebras: both theories share the same classification of finite type objects by familiar Cartan-Killing types. However the underlying combinatorics beyond the two classifications is different: roughly speaking, Kac-Moody algebras are associated with (symmetrizable) Cartan matrices, while cluster algebras correspond to skew-symmetrizable matrices. We study an interplay between the two classes of matrices, in particular, establishing a new criterion for deciding whether a given skew-symmetrizable matrix gives rise to a cluster algebra of finite type., Comment: 20 pages.
