The excess spectroscopy approach used to conduct the FTIR and NMR experiments in addition to various quantum calculations emphasizes the role of alkyl groups present in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-methanol mixtures and alcohols in the formation of hydrogen bonds. The studies reveal the non-negligible effects of secondary alkyl groups in hydrogen bonding and hence explain the excess thermodynamic properties at the molecular level in addition to the observation of the various molecular interactions taking place during the reaction.
