Sodium diisopropylamide in tetrahydrofuran is an effective base for the metalation of 1,4-dienes and isomerization of alkenes. Dienes metalate via tetrasolvated sodium amide monomers, whereas 1-pentene is isomerized by trisolvated monomers. Facile, highly Z-selective isomerizations are observed for allyl ethers under conditions that compare favorably to those of existing protocols. The selectivity is independent of the substituents on the allyl ethers; rate and computational data show that the rates, mechanisms, and roles of sodium−oxygen contacts are substituent-dependent. Heterometallic single-source precursors for the preparation of sodium-rare earth metal fluorides are reported. Fluorinated β-diketonates NaRE(hfac)4 (RE = Y (1), Er (2), and Eu (3); hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) have been obtained on a large scale, in high yield, via one-pot reaction that utilizes commercially available starting reagents. The solid-state structures of the title complexes consist of 1D polymeric chains with alternating [Na] and [RE(hfac)4] units. Compounds 1-3 are highly volatile and exhibit a fair stability in open air. Mass spectrometric investigation indicates the presence of heterometallic fragments in the gas phase. The presence of heterometallic species in solutions of coordinating solvents has also been confirmed. Decomposition of heterometallic precursors in argon atmosphere was shown to yield phase-pure sodium-rare earth metal fluorides. Low decomposition temperature effectively allows for a high degree of control over the formation of both kinetic α-phases and thermodynamic β-phases of target NaREF4 (RE = Y, Er, and Eu) materials. Sodium batteries have seen a resurgence of interest from researchers in recent years, owing to numerous favorable properties including cost and abundance. Here we examine the feasibility of studying this battery chemistry with in situ NMR, focusing on Na metal anodes. Quantification of the NMR signal indicates that Na metal deposits with a morphology associated with an extremely high surface area, the deposits continually accumulating, even in the case of galvanostatic cycling. Two regimes for the electrochemical cycling of Na metal are apparent that have implications for the use of Na anodes: at low currents, the Na deposits are partially removed on reversing the current, while at high currents, there is essentially no removal of the deposits in the initial stages. At longer times, high currents show a significantly greater accumulation of deposits during cycling, again indicating a much lower efficiency of removal of these structures when the current is reversed. The method of continuous variation in conjunction with 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopies was used to characterize lithium and sodium enolates solvated by N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethyldiamine (TMEDA) and tetrahydrofuran (THE). A strategy developed using lithium enolates was then applied to the more challenging sodium enolates. A number of sodium enolates solvated by TMEDA or THF afford exclusively tetramers. We report on the direct promotional effect of sodium on the water-gas shift activity of platinum supported on oxygen-free multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Whereas the Na-free Pt catalysts are shown to be completely inactive, the addition of sodium is found to improve the water-gas shift activity to levels comparable to those obtained with highly active Pt catalysts on metal oxide supports. The structure and morphology of the catalyst surface was followed using aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM, which showed that atomically dispersed platinum species are stabilized by the addition of sodium. In situ atmospheric-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) experiments demonstrated that oxidized platinum Pt-OHx contributions in the Pt 4f signal are higher in the presence of sodium, providing evidence for a previously reported active-site structure of the form Pt-Nax-Oy-(OH)z. Pt remained oxidized in all redox experiments, even when a H2-rich gas mixture was used, but the extent of its oxidation followed the oxidation potential of the gas. These findings offer new insights into the nature of the active platinum-based site for the water-gas shift reaction. A strong inhibitory effect of hydrogen was observed on the reaction kinetics, effectively raising the apparent activation energy from 70 ± 5 kJ/mol (in product-free gas) to 105 ± 7 kJ/mol (in full reformate gas). Increased hydrogen uptake was observed on these materials when both Pt and Na were present on the catalyst, suggesting that hydrogen desorption might limit the water-gas shift reaction rate under such conditions. The reactive uptake and ionization of sodium atoms in glycerol were investigated by gas-liquid scattering experiments and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. A nearly effusive beam of Na atoms at 670 K was directed at liquid glycerol in vacuum, and the scattered Na atoms were detected by a rotatable mass spectrometer. The Na velocity and angular distributions imply that all impinging Na atoms that thermally equilibrate on the surface remain behind, likely ionizing to e- and Na+. The reactive uptake of Na atoms into glycerol was determined to be greater than 75%. Complementary AIMD simulations of Na striking a 17-molecule glycerol cluster indicate that the glycerol hydroxyl groups reorient around the Na atom as it makes contact with the cluster and begins to ionize. Although complete ionization did not occur during the 10 ps simulation, distinct correlations among the extent of ionization, separation between Na+ and e-, solvent coordination, and binding energies of the Na atom and electron were observed. The combination of experiments and simulations indicates that Na-atom deposition provides a low-energy pathway for generating solvated electrons in the near-interfacial region of protic liquids. At present, significant research efforts are being devoted both to identifying means of upgrading existing batteries, including lithium ion types, and also to developing alternate technologies, such as sodium ion, metal-air, and lithium-sulfur batteries. In addition, new battery systems incorporating novel electrode reactions are being identified. One such system utilizes the reaction of electrolyte ions with oxygen atoms reversibly extracted and reinserted topotactically from cathode materials. Batteries based on this system allow the use of various anode materials, such as lithium and sodium, without the requirement to develop new cathode intercalation materials. Bicontinuous porous materials, which possess 3D interconnected pore channels facilitating a smooth mass transport, have attracted much interest in the fields of energy and catalysis. However, their synthesis remains very challenging. We report a general approach, using polymer cubosomes as the template, for the controllable synthesis of bicontinuous porous polymers with an ordered single primitive (SP) cubic structure, including polypyrrole (SP-PPy), poly- m -phenylenediamine (SP-PmPD), and polydopamine (SP-PDA). Specifically, the resultant SP-PPy had a unit cell parameter of 99 nm, pore diameter of 45 nm, and specific surface area of approximately 60 m 2 ·g -1 . As a proof of concept, the I 2 -adsorbed SP-PPy was employed as the cathode materials of newly emerged Na-I 2 batteries, which delivered a record-high specific capacity (235 mA·h·g -1 at 0.5 C), excellent rate capability, and cycling stability (with a low capacity decay of 0.12% per cycle within 400 cycles at 1 C). The advantageous contributions of the bicontinuous structure and I 3 - adsorption mechanism of SP-PPy were revealed by a combination of ion diffusion experiments and theoretical calculations. This study opens a new avenue for the synthesis of porous polymers with new topologies, broadens the spectrum of bicontinuous-structured materials, and also develops a novel potential application for porous polymers.

Raman spectroscopy is combined with multivariate curve resolution to quantify interactions between ions and molecular hydrophobic groups in water. The molecular solutes in this study all have similar structures, with a trimethyl hydrophobic domain and a polar or charged headgroup. Our results imply that aqueous sodium and fluoride ions are strongly expelled from the first hydration shells of the hydrophobic (methyl) groups, while iodide ions are found to enter the hydrophobic hydration shell, to an extent that depends on the methyl group partial charge. However, our quantitative estimates of the corresponding ion binding equilibrium constants indicate that the iodide concentration in the first hydrophobic hydration shell is generally lower than that in the surrounding bulk water, and so an iodide ion cannot be viewed as having a true affinity for the molecular hydrophobic interface, but rather is less strongly expelled from such an interface than fluoride. We report the direct synthesis of powder Na3Ti2(PO4)3 together with its low-potential electrochemical performance and crystal structure elucidation for the reduced and oxidized phases. First-principles calculations at the density functional theory level have been performed to gain further insight into the electrochemistry of Ti(IV)/Ti(III) and Ti(III)/Ti(II) redox couples in these sodium superionic conductor (NASICON) compounds. Finally, we have validated the concept of full-titanium-based sodium ion cells through the assembly of symmetric cells involving Na3Ti2(PO4)3 as both positive and negative electrode materials operating at an average potential of 1.7 V. A novel chelated ruthenium-based metathesis catalyst bearing an N-2,6-diisopropylphenyl group is reported and displays near-perfect selectivity for the Z-olefin (>95%), as well as unparalleled TONs of up to 7400, in a variety of homodimerization and industrially relevant metathesis reactions. This derivative and other new catalytically active species were synthesized using an improved method employing sodium carboxylates to induce the salt metathesis and C-H activation of these chelated complexes. Ab initio-based high-throughput computing and screening are now being used to search and predict new functional materials and novel compounds. However, systematic experimental validation on the predictions remains highly challenging, yet desired. Careful comparison between computational predictions and experimental results is sparse in the literature. Here we report on a systematic experimental validation on previously presented computational predictions of a novel alkali carbonophosphate family of compounds. We report the successful hydrothermal synthesis and structural characterization of multiple sodium carbonophosphates. The experimental conditions for formation of the carbonophosphates and the computational results are compared and discussed. We also demonstrate topotactic chemical de-sodiation of one of the compounds, indicating the potential use of this novel class of compounds as Li+ or Na+ insertion electrodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid and selective transport of Na+ through sodium channels is essential for initiating action potentials within excitable cells. However, an understanding of how these channels discriminate between different ion types and how ions permeate the pore has remained elusive. Using the recently published crystal structure of a prokaryotic sodium channel from Arcobacter butzleri, we are able to determine the steps involved in ion transport and to pinpoint the location and likely mechanism used to discriminate between Na+ and K+. Na+ conduction is shown to involve the loosely coupled "knock-on" movement of two solvated ions. Selectivity arises due to the inability of K+ to fit between a plane of glutamate residues with the preferred solvation geometry that involves water molecules bridging between the ion and carboxylate groups. These mechanisms are different to those described for K+ channels, highlighting the importance of developing a separate mechanistic understanding of Na+ and Ca2+ channels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A complex core-shell cluster consisting of 68 uranyl peroxo polyhedra, 16 nitrate groups, and ~44 K+ and Na+ cations was obtained by self-assembly in alkaline aqueous solution under ambient conditions. Crystals formed after a month and were characterized. The cluster, designated as {U1U28U40R}, contains a fullerene-topology cage built from 28 uranyl polyhedra. A ring consisting of 40 uranyl polyhedra linked into five-membered rings and 16 nitrate groups surrounds this cage cluster. Topological pentagons in the cage and ring are aligned, and their corresponding rings of uranyl bipyramids are linked through K+ cations located between the two shells. A partially occupied U site is located at the center of the cluster. Time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry demonstrated that the U28 cage cluster formed in solution within an hour, whereas the U40R shell formed around the cage cluster after more than several days. Hexagonally ordered mesoporous silica coined COK12 was synthesized in a continuous process by combining streams of sodium silicate and citric acid/sodium citrate buffered soiution of (ethylene oxide)20-(propylene oxide)70-(ethylene oxide)20 tnblock copolymer (Pluronic P123) from separate reservoirs. COK12 precipitated spontaneously upon combining both streams at nearly neutral pH and ambient temperature. Stable intermediates of the COK-12 formation process could be prepared by limiting sodium silicate addition. Investigation of these intermediates using small-angle X-ray scattering revealed COK-12 formed via an assemblyprocess departingfrompherical uncharged core-shell P123-silica micelles. The sterical stabilization of these micelles decreased upon accumulation of silicate oligomers in their shell. Aggregation of the spherical micelles led to cylindrical micelles, which aligned and adopted the final hexagonal organization. This unprecedentedly fast formation of P6m ordered mesoporous silica was caused by two factors in the synthesis medium: the neutral pH favoring uncharged silicate oligomers and the high salt concentration promoting hydrophobic interactions with surfactant micelles leading to silica accumulation in the PEO shell. The easy continuous synthesis process is convenient for large-scale production. The platelet particle morphology with short and identical internal channels will be advantageous for many applications such as pore replication, nanotube or fiber growth, catalytic functionalization, drug delivery, film and sensor development, and in nano dyes as well as for investigation of pore diffusion phenomena. We have carried out a detailed atomic simulation study of molecular order within a chromonic liquid crystalline material (sunset yellow) in aqueous solution. Self-assembly occurs in dilute solutions to form stacked aggregates, which show a preference for head-to-tail stacking and antiparallel dipole order. This feature is independent of solution concentration and aggregate size. Stacks are found to be dynamic entities in which rotational transitions (flips) can occur between antiparallel and parallel configurations. At a concentration matching the nematic phase of sunset yellow, the simulations show chromonic columns with a loose hexagonal packing and an intercolumn distance of 2.36 nm. Partial condensation of sodium ions occurs around a chromonic stack, with two preferred binding sites identified for sodium ions, corresponding to strong binding with the oxygens of a sulfonate group and a bridging site between a pair of molecules in a stack. A value for the free energy of binding of a molecule to a stack of 7 kBT was obtained for stacks of three and eight molecules, with a slightly larger value (additional 2 kJ mol-1) obtained for the dimer binding energy, indicating that aggregation is approximately isodesmic. The alkali-metal salts (potassium and sodium) of a large number of aryl- and heteroarylsilanols undergo efficient cross-coupling with a wide range of aromatic bromides and chlorides under mild conditions to form polysubstituted biaryls. The critical feature for the success of these coupling reactions and their considerable scope is the use of bis(tri-tert-butylphosphine)palladium. Under the optimized conditions, electron-rich, electron-poor, and sterically hindered arylsilanolates afford cross-coupling products in good yields. Many functional groups are compatible with the coupling conditions such as esters, ketones, acetals, ethers, silyl ethers, and dimethylamino groups. Two particularly challenging substrates, (2-benzofuranyl)dimethylsilanolate and (2,6-dichlorophenyl)dimethylsilanolate prepared as their sodium salts showed excellent activity in the coupling reactions, in the former case also with aromatic chlorides. We report on the first detailed atomic-scale studies of micelle fission in micellar systems consisting of anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate with explicit solvent. We demonstrate a new micelle fission pathway for ionic surfactants and show how micelle fission can be induced by varying the ionic concentration. We argue that this fission pathway proceeds through an initial Rayleigh instability driven by Coulombic interactions and show how the intermediate stages proceed through the formation of a highly interdigitated stalk. An interconversion system between imidazolium and imidazolinium has been proposed for the first time. Imidazolium and imidazolinium cations exhibit different reactivity due to the difference in the aromaticity and charge localization structure, which is successfully controlled by means of photoirradiation in the present system. A 4,5-dithiazolylimidazolium salt was prepared and studied as a new class of photochromic materials modulating electrostatic interactions and chemical reactivities. The photochromic 4,5-dithiazolylimidazolium showed reversible photoconversions between imidazolium open-form and imidazolinium closed-form upon successive irradiation with UV and visible light. The imidazolinium closed- form exhibited characteristic solvato- and ionochromisms in which the absorption maximum shifted by more than 80 nm depending on the solvent polarity and counteranions, whereas the imidazolium open-form showed no such solvent-dependent property. Because the corresponding nonionic 4,5-dithiazolylimidazole also did not exhibit the solvent-dependent absorption profile both in open- and closed-forms, the appearance of these chromisms in imidazolinium closed-form was attributed to the change in the extent of ionic interaction, which was brought about by the photoconversion of imidazolium to imidazolinium. The photoderived strong ionic interaction of imidazolinium with counteranion was further applied to the photocontrolled nucleophilic reaction system. Whereas the imidazolium open-form was inert to nucleophiles such as sodium methoxide, the imidazolinium closed-form was reactive to the nucleophilic reaction, demonstrating a photogated reaction system. For a long time, telomeres have been considered to be transcriptionally silent. Very recently, a breaking finding from two groups demonstrated that telomere DNA is transcribed into telomeric repeat-containing RNA in mammalian cells (Azzalin, C. M.; Reichenbach, P.; Khoriauli, L.; Giulotto, E.; Lingner, J. Science 2007, 318, 798-801. Schoefter, S.; Blasco, M. A. Nat. Cell Biol. 2008, 10, 228-236). The telomeric RNA, a newly appeared player in telomere biology, may be a key component of telomere machinery. In the current study, we used a combination of NMR, circular dichroism (CD), matrix-assisted laser desorptionhionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS), and gel electrophoresis to investigate the structural features of a human telomere RNA sequence. We demonstrated that human telomere RNA can form a parallel G-quadruplex structure in the presence of Na+. Importantly, we found for the first time that the G-quadruplex forming telomere RNA protects itself from enzymatic digestion. The deamidation of asparagine (Asn) residues is the most common type of spontaneous post-translational protein modification and plays a vital role in inflammation, protein transformation, apoptosis, aging, and a number of degenerative diseases. Here we present a full molecular description of asparagine deamidation in the Na+(Asn) complex by studying its collision-induced dissociation (CID) with Xe using a guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometer (GIBMS). Advanced methods for analysis of the energy-dependent CID cross section, considering both competing and sequential processes, provide the 0 K barrier for deamidation after accounting for unimolecular decay rates, internal energy of reactant ions, and multiple ion-neutral collisions. Relaxed potential energy surface scans performed at the B3LYP/6-31 G(d) level identify the transition state (TS) and intermediate reaction species for Na!(Asn) deamidation, structures that are further optimized at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level. Single-point energies of the key optimized structures are calculated at MP2(full), B3LYP, and B3P86 levels using a 6-311+G(2d,2p) basis set. This coordinated application of both experimental work and quantum chemical calculations allows for a complete characterization of the elementary steps of this reaction and identification of the rate-limiting elementary step of Asn deamidation. Aqueous surfactant suspensions of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are very sensitive to environmental conditions. For example, the photoluminescence of semiconducting SWNTs varies significantly with concentration, pH, or salinity. In most cases, these factors restrict the range of applicability of SWNT suspensions. Here, we report a simple strategy to obtain stable and highly luminescent individualized SWNTs at pH values ranging from 1 to 11, as well as in highly saline buffers. This strategy relies on `combining SWNTs previously suspended in sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) with biocompatible poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), which can be polymerized in situ to entrap the SWNT-SDBS micelles. We present a model that accounts for the photoluminescence stability of these suspensions based on PVP morphological changes at different pH values. Moreover, we demonstrate the effectiveness of these highly stable suspensions by imaging individual luminescent SWNTs on the surface of live human embryonic kidney cells (HEK cells). An ionophore antibiotic salinomycin was studied in a membrane environment consisting of isotropic bicelles, a better model for biological membranes than micelles, and its conformation and topological orientation in bicelles was determined. 2D NMR measurements and restrained conformational search revealed that salinomycin-sodium salt in bicelles adopts an open conformation in which the orientation of the E-ring is significantly different from that in crystal and solution structures. This conformational alteration breaks an intramolecular hydrogen bond between 28-OH and 1-O, dislocates the ether oxygen of the E-ring from a coordinated position to the sodium ion observed in the crystal, and consequently weakens the complexation between salinomycin and the sodium ion. Paramagnetic relaxation experiments using doxyl-phospholipids reveal that salinomycin is embedded shallowly in bicelles, with both terminals being closer to the water interface and the olef in portion facing the bicelle interior. Measurements of intermolecular NOEs between salinomycin and phospholipids further supported this orientation. Weaker complexation with sodium ion and positional preference in the membrane polar region may facilitate the catch-and-release of metal ions at the polar/nonpolar interface of bilayers. Using optical tweezers, we have measured the effect of monovalent cation concentration and species on the folding free energy of five large (49-124 nt) RNA hairpins, including HIV-1 TAR and molecules approximating A·U and G·C homopolymers. RNA secondary structure thermodynamics are accurately described by a model consisting of nearest-neighbor interactions and additive loop and bulge terms. Melting of small (<15 bp) duplexes and hairpins in 1 M NaCI has been used to determine the parameters of this model, which is now used extensively to predict structure and folding dynamics. Few systematic measurements have been made in other ionic conditions or for larger structures. By applying mechanical force, we measured the work required to fold and unfold single hairpins at room temperature over a range of cation concentrations from 50 to 1000 mM. Free energies were then determined using the Crooks fluctuation theorem. We observed the following: (1) In most cases, the nearest-neighbor model accurately predicted the free energy of folding at 1 M NaCI. (2) Free energy was proportional to the logarithm of salt concentration. (3) Substituting potassium ions for sodium slightly decreased hairpin stability. The TAR hairpin also misfolded nearly twice as often in KCI, indicating a differential kinetic response. (4) Monovalent cation concentration affects RNA stability in a sequence-dependent manner. G·C helices were unaffected by changing salt concentration, A·U helices were modestly affected, and the hairpin loop was very sensitive. Surprisingly, the U·C·U bulge of TAR was found to be equally stable in all conditions tested. We also report a new estimate for the elastic parameters of single-stranded RNA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Growth kinetics and temporal size/shape evolution of gold nanocrystals by citrate reduction in boiling water were studied systematically and quantitatively. Results reveal that the size variation and overall reaction mechanism were mostly determined by the solution pH that was in turn controlled by the concentration of sodium citrate (Na3Ct) in the traditional Frens's synthesis. This conclusion was further confirmed by the reactions with variable pH but fixed concentrations of the two reactants, HAuCI4 and Na3Ct. Two substantially different reaction pathways were identified, with the switching point at pH = 6.2-6.5. The first pathway is for the low pH range and consists of three overlapping steps: nucleation, random attachment to polycrystalline nanowires, and smoothing of the nanowires via intra-particle ripening to dots. The second pathway that occurred above the pH switching point is consistent with the commonly known nucleation-growth route. Using the second pathway, we demonstrated a new synthetic route for the synthesis of nearly monodisperse gold nanocrystals in the size range from 20 to 40 nm by simply varying the solution pH with fixed concentrations of HAuCI4 and Na3Ct. The switching of the reaction pathways is likely due to the integration nature of water as a reaction medium. In the citrate reduction, the solution pH was varied by changing the initial HAuCl4/Na3Ct ratio. Consequently, when pH was higher than about 6.2, the very reactive [AuCI3(OH)J would be converted to less reactive [AuCI2(OH)2] and [AuCI(OH)3]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Janus magnetic nanoparticles (~20 nm) were prepared by grafting either polystyrene sodium sulfonate (PSSNa) or polydimethylamino ethylmethacrylate (PDMAEMA) to the exposed surfaces of negatively charged poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-coated magnetite nanoparticles adsorbed onto positively charged silica beads. Individually dispersed Janus nanoparticles were obtained by repulsion from the beads on reversal of the silica surface charge when the solution pH was increased. Controlled aggregation of the Janus nanoparticles was observed at low pH values, with the formation of stable clusters of approximately 2–4 times the initial size of the particles. Cluster formation was reversed, and individually dispersed nanoparticles recovered, by restoring the pH to high values. At intermediate pH values, PSSNa Janus nanoparticles showed moderate clustering, while PDMAEMA Janus nanoparticles aggregated uncontrollably due to dipolar interactions. The size of the stable clusters could be controlled by increasing the molecular weight of the grafted polymer, or by decreasing the magnetic nanoparticle surface availability for grafting, both of which yielded larger cluster sizes. The addition of small amounts of PAA-coated magnetic nanoparticles to the Janus nanoparticle suspension resulted in a further increase in the final cluster size. Monte Carlo simulation results compared favorably with experimental observations and showed the formation of small, elongated clusters similar in structure to those observed in cryo-TEM images. The properties of confined water and diffusive proton-transfer kinetics in the nanoscopic water channels of Nafion fuel cell membranes at various hydration levels are compared to water in a series of well-characterized AOT reverse micelles with known water nanopool sizes using the photoacid pyranine as a molecular probe. The side chains of Nafion are terminated by sulfonate groups with sodium counterions that are arrayed along the water channels. AOT has sulfonate head groups with sodium counterions that form the interface with the reverse micelle's water nanopool. The extent of excited-state deprotonation is observed by steady-state fluorescence measurements. Proton-transfer kinetics and orientational relaxation are measured by time-dependent fluorescence using time-correlated single photon counting. The time dependence of deprotonation is related to diffusive proton transport away from the photoacid. The fluorescence reflecting the long time scale proton transport has an ~t-0.8 power law decay in contrast to bulk water, which has a t-⅜ power law. For a given hydration level of Nafion, the excited-state proton transfer and the orientational relaxation are similar to those observed for a related size AOT water nanopool. The effective size of the Nafion water channels at various hydration levels are estimated by the known size of the AOT reverse micelles that display the corresponding proton-transfer kinetics and orientational relaxation. Many of the essential metalloproteins are located in the cell, whose cytoplasmic fluid contains several small inorganic anions, such as Cl-, NO2-, NO3-, H2PO4-, and SO42-, that play an indispensable role in determining the cell's volume, regulating the cell's pH, signal transduction, muscle contraction, as well as cell growth and metabolism. However, the physical principles governing the competition between these abundant, intracellular anions and protein or nucleic acid residues in binding to cytoplasmic metal cations such as Na+, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ are not well understood; hence, we have delineated the physicochemical basis for this competition using density functional theory in conjunction with the continuum dielectric method. The results show that the metal cation can bind to its target protein against a high background concentration of inorganic anions because (i) desolvating a negatively charged Asp/Glu carboxylate in a protein cavity costs much less than desolvating an inorganic anion in aqueous solution and (ii) the metal-binding site acts as a polydentate ligand that uses all its ligating entities to bind the metal cation either directly or indirectly. The results also show that the absolute hydration free energy of the "alien" anion as well as the net charge and relative solvent exposure of the metal-binding protein cavity are the key factors governing the competition between protein and inorganic ligands for a given cytoplasmic metal cation. Increasing the net negative charge of the protein cavity, while decreasing the number of available amide groups for metal binding, protects the metal-bound ligands from being dislodged by cellular anions, thus revealing a "protective" role for carboxylate groups in a protein cavity, in addition to their role in high affinity metal-binding. Beams of sodium atoms with energies of a few eV are crossed with a beam of oriented CH3NO2 molecules to study the effect of collision energy and orientation on electron transfer. The electron transfer produces Na+ ions and free electrons, parent negative ions (CH3NO2-), and fragmentation ions NO2- and O- in proportions that depend on the collision energy. The steric asymmetry is very small or zero and suggests that production of all of the ions is favored by sideways attack with respect to the permanent dipole along the C-N axis. In these experiments, the electron appears to be transferred into the ²B1 state of the anion comprising mainly the π*NO LUMO, producing a valence-bound state rather than a dipole-bound state.
