Intramolecular hydrogen bonding increases the stability of the folded structures in 1, 2-diaminoethane diureas. The stability of these 9-membered hydrogen-bonded ring structures of 1,2-diaminoethane diureas is greater than that of the 10-membered hydrogen-bonded ring structures of 1,3-diaminopropane diureas. An anti conformation is observed for the 1,2-diaminoethane backbone of diureas both in the solid and solution state.

Uncharged hydrogen-bonding receptor molecules which were found in micelles formed supramolecular receptors that bound hydrogen-bonding ligands in aqueous solutions. Micelles provided micro environments that elicited hydrogen bonding between small molecules in aqueous solutions. Hydrogen bonding contributed to free energy of these uncharged solute molecules in aqueous solutions.

A new breed of molecular receptors which use hydrogen bonding to bind adenine derivatives in aqueous solution was identified from the preparation of several supramolecular molecules containing ammonium salts, which were integrated into sodium dodenyl sulfate (SDS) micelles. The hydrophobic interactions between the micelle and the ademine substrate, and the hydrogen bonding between the adenine and thynine groups are responsible for the binding.

The synthesis of a small, artificial beta-sheet consisting of a 1,2-diaminoethane diurea scaffold, a dipeptide amide and a beta-strand mimic, a 5-amino-2-methoxybenzamide unit, is described. The beta-strand mimic was designed to recreate the hydrogen-bonding groups of one edge of a peptide beta-strand. The resulting compound demonstrates hydrogen bonding in chloroform solution similar to those of antiparallel beta-sheets.
