Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), narrow and straight-edged stripes of graphene, attract a great deal of attention because of their excellent electronic and magnetic properties. As of yet, there is no fabrication method for GNRs to satisfy both precision at the atomic scale and scalability, which is critical for fundamental research and future technological development. Here, we report a methodology for bulk-scale synthesis of GNRs with atomic precision utilizing a metal-organic framework (MOF). The GNR was synthesized by the polymerization of perylene (PER) or its derivative within the nanochannels of the MOF. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that PER was uniaxially aligned along the nanochannels of the MOF through host-guest interactions, which allowed for regulated growth of the nanoribbons. A series of characterizations of the GNR, including NMR, UV/vis/NIR, and Raman spectroscopy measurements, confirmed the formation of the GNR with well-controlled edge structure and width.

Synthesis of biaryls via the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling (SMC) reaction using nitroarenes as an electrophilic coupling partners is described. Mechanistic studies have revealed that the catalytic cycle of this reaction is initiated by the cleavage of the aryl-nitro (Ar-NO 2 ) bond by palladium, which represents an unprecedented elemental reaction.

Molecules confined in nanospaces will have distinctly different properties to those in the bulk state because of the formation of specific molecular assemblies and conformations. We studied the chain conformation and dynamics of single polystyrene (PSt) chains confined in highly regular one-dimensional nanochannels of a porous coordination polymer [Zn 2(bdc) 2ted] n ( 1; bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, ted = triethylenediamine). Characterization by two-dimensional (2D) heteronuclear (1)H- (13)C NMR gave a direct demonstration of the nanocomposite formation and the intimacy between the PSt and the pore surfaces of 1. Calorimetric analysis of the composite did not reveal any glass transition of PSt, which illustrates the different nature of the PSt encapsulated in the nanochannels compared with that of bulk PSt. From N 2 adsorption measurements, the apparent density of PSt in the nanochannel was estimated to be 0.55 g cm (-3), which is much lower than that of bulk PSt. Results of a solid-state (2)H NMR study of the composite showed the homogeneous mobility of phenyl flipping with significantly low activation energy, as a result of the encapsulation of single PSt chains in one-dimensional regular crystalline nanochannels. This is also supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

In this communication, a novel strategy for the design of a zinc finger peptide on the basis of alpha-helix substitution has been demonstrated. Sp1HM is a helix-substituted mutant for the wild-type Sp1(zf123) and its alpha-helix of each finger is replaced by that of fingers 4-6 of CF2-II. The circular dichroism spectrum of Sp1HM suggests that Sp1HM has an ordered secondary structure similar to that of Sp1(zf123). From the analyses of the DNA binding affinity and specificity by gel mobility shift assay, it is clearly indicated that Sp1HM specifically binds to the AT-rich sequence (5'-GTA TAT ATA-3') with 3.2 nM dissociation constants. Moreover, the zinc finger peptides for the sequence alternating between the AT- and GC-rich subsites can also be created by the alpha-helix substitution. This strategy is evidently effective and is also more convenient than the phage display method. Consequently, our design method is widely applicable to creating zinc finger peptides with novel binding specificities.
