Chalcogen bonding (ChB) is rapidly rising to prominence in supramolecular chemistry as a powerful sigma (σ)-hole-based noncovalent interaction, especially for applications in the field of molecular recognition. Recent studies have demonstrated ChB donor strength and potency to be remarkably sensitive to local electronic environments, including redox-switchable on/off anion binding and sensing capability. Influencing the unique electronic and geometric environment sensitivity of ChB interactions through simultaneous cobound metal cation recognition, herein, we present the first potassium chloride-selective heteroditopic ion-pair receptor. The direct conjugation of benzo-15-crown-5 ether (B15C5) appendages to Te centers in a bis-tellurotriazole framework facilitates alkali metal halide (MX) ion-pair binding through the formation of a cofacial intramolecular bis-B15C5 M+ (M+ = K+, Rb+, Cs+) sandwich complex and bidentate ChB···X- formation. Extensive quantitative 1H NMR ion-pair affinity titration experiments, solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction, and U-tube transport studies all demonstrate unprecedented KCl selectivity over all other group 1 metal chlorides. It is demonstrated that the origin of the receptor's ion-pair binding cooperativity and KCl selectivity arises from an electronic polarization of the ChB donors induced by the cobound alkali metal cation. Importantly, the magnitude of this switch on Te-centered electrophilicity, and therefore anion-binding affinity, is shown to correlate with the inherent Lewis acidity of the alkali metal cation. Extensive computational DFT investigations corroborated the experimental alkali metal cation-anion ion-pair binding observations for halides and oxoanions. published

Phase-transfer catalysis (PTC) is one of the most powerful catalytic manifolds for asymmetric synthesis. Chiral cationic or anionic PTC strategies have enabled a variety of transformations, yet studies on the use of insoluble inorganic salts as nucleophiles for the synthesis of enantioenriched molecules have remained elusive. A long-standing challenge is the development of methods for asymmetric carbon–fluorine bond formation from readily available and cost-effective alkali metal fluorides. In this Perspective, we describe how H-bond donors can provide a solution through fluoride binding. We use examples, primarily from our own research, to discuss how hydrogen bonding interactions impact fluoride reactivity and the role of H-bond donors as phase-transfer catalysts to bring solid-phase alkali metal fluorides in solution. These studies led to hydrogen bonding phase-transfer catalysis (HB-PTC), a new concept in PTC, originally crafted for alkali metal fluorides but offering opportunities beyond enantioselective fluorination. Looking ahead, the unlimited options that one can consider to diversify the H-bond donor, the inorganic salt, and the electrophile, herald a new era in phase-transfer catalysis. Whether abundant inorganic salts of lattice energy significantly higher than those studied to date could be considered as nucleophiles, e.g., CaF2, remains an open question, with solutions that may be found through synergistic PTC catalysis or beyond PTC.

Though N2 cleavage on K-promoted Fe surfaces is important in the large-scale Haber-Bosch process, there is still ambiguity about the number of Fe atoms involved during the N-N cleaving step and the interactions responsible for the promoting ability of K. This work explores a molecular Fe system for N2 reduction, particularly focusing on the differences in the results obtained using different alkali metals as reductants (Na, K, Rb, Cs). The products of these reactions feature new types of Fe-N2 and Fe-nitride cores. Surprisingly, adding more equivalents of reductant to the system gives a product in which the N-N bond is not cleaved, indicating that the reducing power is not the most important factor that determines the extent of N2 activation. On the other hand, the results suggest that the size of the alkali metal cation can control the number of Fe atoms that can approach N2, which in turn controls the ability to achieve N2 cleavage. The accumulated results indicate that cleaving the triple N-N bond to nitrides is facilitated by simultaneous approach of least three low-valent Fe atoms to a single molecule of N2.

The solid-state structures of LiNH(2)BH(3) and NaNH(2)BH(3) have been shown recently to exhibit intricate M(δ+)···(δ-)H-B and N-H(δ+)···(δ-)H-B interactions. However, closer inspection of these structures reveals additional homopolar H···H interactions, viz., B-H(δ-)···(δ-)H-B and N-H(δ+)···(δ+)H-N, which contribute to the relative stability of the extended structures of these crystalline materials. In addition, an NMR study of the isotopomer LiND(2)BH(3) shows that a significant quantity of H(2) is desorbed thermally along with HD, which can only arise from hydride-hydride interactions, either directly from B-H(δ-)···(δ-)H-B moieties or indirectly through the participation of Li-H intermediates.

X-ray absorption spectra at the Co L(2,3)-edges were analyzed by means of ligand field multiplet calculations in different states of three photomagnetic CoFe Prussian blue analogues of chemical formula Cs(2)Co(4)[Fe(CN)(6)](3.3) x 11 H(2)O, Rb(2)Co(4)[Fe(CN)(6)](3.3) x 11 H(2)O and Na(2)Co(4)[Fe(CN)(6)](3.3) x 11 H(2)O. These simulations of the experimental spectra allowed the quantification of the crystal field parameter (10Dq). This determination led us (i) to evidence different behaviors of the Co(III)(LS) and Co(II)(HS) ions in the three-dimensional structure related to their electronic configurations, (ii) to propose an approach based on the electronic density distribution along the Co-NC-Fe linkage to account for the energy position of the states implied in the switching properties of the compounds, and (iii) to explain the different photomagnetic properties observed as a function of the size of the inserted alkali cation by competing interactions between the cyanide ion and the transition metal ions within the CoFe cyanide bimetallic network on the one hand and the cyanide ion and the alkali metal ions on the other hand.

The montmorillonite clay-catalyzed reactions of nucleotides generate oligomers as long as 50-mers. The extent of catalysis depends on the magnitude of the negative charge on the montmorillonite lattice and the number of cations associated with it. When cations in raw montmorillonites are replaced by sodium ions, the resulting Na(+)-montmorillonite does not catalyze oligomer formation because they saturate the interlayers between the platelets of montmorillonites, which blocks the binding of the activated monomers. Treating the montmorillonite with dilute hydrochloric acid replaces the cations on the raw montmorillonite with protons. The protonated montmorillonite, titrated to pH 6-7, serves as a catalyst for the formation of RNA oligomers. The titration does not add sufficient sodium ions to the interlayers of the montmorillonite platelets to prevent the activated monomer from entering. It was noted that noncatalytic montmorillonites have a higher negative charge on their platelets that is due mainly to the natural substitution of the tetravalent and trivalent elements in the montmorillonite lattice with trivalent and divalent metal ions, respectively. The larger negative charge on these montmorillonites was demonstrated by the almost 2-fold greater amounts of sodium hydroxide needed to titrate noncatalytic montmorillonites as compared to the catalytic montmorillonites. Adsorption isotherms established that the equilibrium binding is strongest for ImpA and weakest for ImpU. Of the 22 montmorillonites investigated, 12 were catalysts. This research provides insight into the mechanism of the catalytic process.

It is widely believed that the addition of salts to water engenders structural changes in the hydrogen-bond network well beyond the adjacent shell of solvating molecules. Classification of many ions as "structure makers" and "structure breakers" has been based in part on corresponding changes in the vibrational spectra (Raman and IR). Here we show that changes in O-H vibrational spectra induced by the alkali halides in liquid water result instead from the actions of ions' electric fields on adjacent water molecules. Computer simulations that accurately reproduce our experimental measurements suggest that the statistics of hydrogen-bond strengths are only weakly modified beyond this first solvation shell.

The ability to modulate the physical properties of a supramolecular hydrogel may be beneficial for biomaterial and biomedical applications. We find that guanosine (G 1), when combined with 0.5 equiv of potassium borate, forms a strong, self-supporting hydrogel with elastic moduli10 kPa. The countercation in the borate salt (MB(OH)4) significantly alters the physical properties of the hydrogel. The gelator combination of G 1 and KB(OH)4 formed the strongest hydrogel, while the weakest system was obtained with LiB(OH)4, as judged by (1)H NMR and rheology. Data from powder XRD, (1)H double-quantum solid-state magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) were consistent with a structural model that involves formation of borate dimers and G4·K(+) quartets by G 1 and KB(OH)4. Stacking of these G4·M(+) quartets into G4-nanowires gives a hydrogel. We found that the M(+) cation helps stabilize the anionic guanosine-borate (GB) diesters, as well as the G4-quartets. Supplementing the standard gelator mixture of G 1 and 0.5 equiv of KB(OH)4 with additional KCl or KNO3 increased the strength of the hydrogel. We found that thioflavin T fluoresces in the presence of G4·M(+) precursor structures. This fluorescence response for thioflavin T was the greatest for the K(+) GB system, presumably due to the enhanced interaction of the dye with the more stable G4·K(+) quartets. The fluorescence of thioflavin T increased as a function of gelator concentration with an increase that correlated with the system's gel point, as measured by solution viscosity.

The mode of metal ion and water binding to the amino acid valine is investigated using both theory and experiment. Computations indicate that without water, the structure of valine is nonzwitterionic. Both Li(+) and Na(+) are coordinated to the nitrogen and carbonyl oxygen (NO coordination), whereas K(+) coordinates to both oxygens (OO coordination) of nonzwitterionic valine. The addition of a single water molecule does not significantly affect the relative energies calculated for the cationized valine clusters. Experimentally, the rates of water evaporation from clusters of Val.M(+)(H(2)O)(1), M = Li, Na, and K, are measured using blackbody infrared radiative dissociation. The dissociation rate from the valine complex is compared to water evaporation rates from model complexes of known structure. These results indicate that the metal ion in the lithiated and the sodiated clusters is NO-coordinated to nonzwitterionic valine, while that in the potassiated cluster has OO coordination, in full agreement with theory. The zwitterionic vs nonzwitterionic character of valine in the potassiated cluster cannot be distinguished experimentally. Extensive modeling provides strong support for the validity of inferring structural information from the kinetic data.

The ability to actively manipulate and transport single molecules in solution has the potential to revolutionize chemical synthesis and catalysis. In previous work, we developed a nanopore platform using the interior of a single-walled carbon nanotube (diameter = 1.5 nm) for the Coulter detection of single cations of Li(+), K(+), and Na(+). We demonstrate that as a result of their fabrication, such systems have electrostatic barriers present at their ends that are generally asymmetric, allowing for the trapping of ions. We show that above this threshold bias, traversing the nanopore end is not rate-limiting and that the pore-blocking behavior of two parallel nanotubes follows an idealized Markov process with the electrical potential. Such nanopores may allow for high-throughput linear processing of molecules as new catalysts and separation devices.

Novel SHG effective inorganic open-framework chalcohalides, Ba(3)AGa(5)Se(10)Cl(2) (A = Cs, Rb and K), have been synthesized by high temperature solid state reactions. These compounds crystallize in the tetragonal space group I ̅4 (No.82) with a = b = 8.7348(6) - 8.6341(7) Å, c = 15.697(3) - 15.644(2) Å, V = 1197.6(3) - 1166.2(2) Å(3) on going from Cs to K. The polar framework of (3)(∞)[Ga(5)Se(10)](5-) is constructed by nonpolar GaSe(4)(5- )tetrahedron (T1) and polar supertetrahedral cluster Ga(4)Se(10)(8-) (T2) in a zinc-blende topological structure with Ba/A cations and Cl anions residing in the tunnels. Remarkably, Ba(3)CsGa(5)Se(10)Cl(2) exhibits the strongest intensity at 2.05 μm (about 100 times that of the benchmark AgGaS(2) in the particle size of 30-46 μm) among chalcogenides, halides, and chalcohalides. Furthermore, these compounds are also the first open-framework compounds with red photoluminescent emissions. The Vienna ab initio theoretical studies analyze electronic structures and linear and nonlinear optical properties.

We report in full detail our studies on the catalytic, asymmetric α-fluorination of acid chlorides, a practical method that produces an array of α-fluorocarboxylic acid derivatives in which improved yield and virtually complete enantioselectivity are controlled through electrophilic fluorination of a ketene enolate intermediate. We discovered, for the first time, that a third catalyst, a Lewis acidic lithium salt, could be introduced into a dually activated system to amplify yields of aliphatic products, primarily through activation of the fluorinating agent. Through our mechanistic studies (based on kinetic data, isotopic labeling, spectroscopic measurements, and theoretical calculations) we were able to utilize our understanding of this "trifunctional" reaction to optimize the conditions and obtain new products in good yield and excellent enantioselectivity.

The optical absorption spectra of alkali metals in ethylenediamine have provided evidence for a third oxidation state, -1, of all of the alkali metals heavier than lithium. Experimentally determined NMR parameters have supported this interpretation, further indicating that whereas Na(-) is a genuine metal anion, the interaction of the alkali anion with the medium becomes progressively stronger for the larger metals. Herein, first-principles computations based upon density functional theory are carried out on various species which may be present in solutions composed of alkali metals and ethylenediamine. The energies of a number of hypothetical reactions computed with a continuum solvation model indicate that neither free metal anions, M(-), nor solvated electrons are the most stable species. Instead, [Li(en)(3)](2) and [M(en)(3)(δ+)·M(δ-)] (M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) are predicted to have enhanced stability. The M(en)(3) complexes can be viewed as superalkalis or expanded alkalis, ones in which the valence electron density is pulled out to a greater extent than in the alkali metals alone. The computed optical absorption spectra and NMR parameters of the [Li(en)(3)](2) superalkali dimer and the [M(en)(3)(δ+)·M(δ-)] superalkali-alkali mixed dimers are in good agreement with the aforementioned experimental results, providing further evidence that these may be the dominant species in solution. The latter can also be thought of as an ion pair formed from an alkali metal anion (M(-)) and solvated cation (M(en)(3)(+)).

Chirality reversal of a residue in a peptide can change its mode of binding to a metal ion, as shown here experimentally by gas-phase IR spectroscopy of peptide metal ion complexes. The binding conformations of Li+, Na+, and H+ with the LL and DL stereoisomers of PhePhe were compared through IR ion spectroscopy using the FELIX free-electron laser. For the DL isomer, both Li+ and Na+ exclusively coordinate to the amide O atom, the carboxyl O atom, and one of the aromatic rings (the OOR conformation), while for the LL isomer, a mixture of the OOR and NOR conformations was found. The stereochemically induced change in conformation is shown to reflect the strength of an NH center dot center dot center dot pi interaction remote from the metal ion site. Protonated PhePhe shows no stereochemically induced variation in binding geometry.

We report our efforts to study host-guest complexes in the gas phase using a combination of cluster spectroscopy and density functional theory. Mass-selected M(+)(18-crown-6 ether)(H(2)O)(1-4) complexes for the alkali metal ion series were probed using infrared predissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy in the OH stretching region. As the degree of hydration is increased, the IRPD spectra undergo significant changes as the strong 18c6...M(+) interaction weakens and allows H(2)O...H(2)O hydrogen-bonding interactions to compete. The size of the ion is important in determining when this transition occurs. For the smaller ions, Li(+) and Na(+), the 18c6...M(+) interaction proves to be more resilient and is still dominant with two and three waters present. The potassium cation, with its optimum size match with the 18-cown-6 ether cavity, serves as a bridge between the larger and smaller alkali metal ions. In particular, we found a structure for K(+)(18-crown-6 ether)(H(2)O)(2) that appears to be a building block for K(+)(18-crown-6 ether)(H(2)O)(3) complexes and is also believed to be present in Rb(+)(18-crown-6 ether)(H(2)O)(2,3) and Cs(+)(18-crown-6 ether)(H(2)O)(2,3). With four waters present, we were unable to spectrally resolve features associated with individual water molecules due to broad hydrogen bonding. However, results for Cs(+)(18-crown-6 ether)(H(2)O)(4) suggest that H(2)O...H(2)O hydrogen bonding has become the dominant interaction present at this size.

Heterobimetallic Lewis acids M 3(THF) n (BINOLate) 3Ln [M = Li, Na, K; Ln = lanthanide(III)] are exceptionally useful asymmetric catalysts that exhibit high levels of enantioselectivity across a wide range of reactions. Despite their prominence, important questions remain regarding the nature of the catalyst-substrate interactions and, therefore, the mechanism of catalyst operation. Reported herein are the isolation and structural characterization of 7- and 8-coordinate heterobimetallic complexes Li 3(THF) 4(BINOLate) 3Ln(THF) [Ln = La, Pr, and Eu], Li 3(py) 5(BINOLate) 3Ln(py) [Ln = Eu and Yb], and Li 3(py) 5(BINOLate) 3La(py) 2 [py = pyridine]. Solution binding studies of cyclohexenone, DMF, and pyridine with Li 3(THF) n (BINOLate) 3Ln [Ln = Eu, Pr, and Yb] and Li 3(DMEDA) 3(BINOLate) 3Ln [Ln = La and Eu; DMEDA = N, N'-dimethylethylene diamine] demonstrate binding of these Lewis basic substrate analogues to the lanthanide center. The paramagnetic europium, ytterbium, and praseodymium complexes Li 3(THF) n (BINOLate) 3Ln induce relatively large lanthanide-induced shifts on substrate analogues that ranged from 0.5 to 4.3 ppm in the (1)H NMR spectrum. X-ray structure analysis and NMR studies of Li 3(DMEDA) 3(BINOLate) 3Ln [Ln = Lu, Eu, La, and the transition metal analogue Y] reveal selective binding of DMEDA to the lithium centers. Upon coordination of DMEDA, six new stereogenic nitrogen centers are formed with perfect diastereoselectivity in the solid state, and only a single diastereomer is observed in solution. The lithium-bound DMEDA ligands are not displaced by cyclohexenone, DMF, or THF on the NMR time scale. Use of the DMEDA adduct Li 3(DMEDA) 3(BINOLate) 3La in three catalytic asymmetric reactions led to enantioselectivities similar to those obtained with Shibasaki's Li 3(THF) n (BINOLate) 3La complex. Also reported is a unique dimeric [Li 6(en) 7(BINOLate) 6Eu 2][mu-eta (1),eta (1)-en] structure [en = ethylenediamine]. On the basis of these studies, it is hypothesized that the lanthanide in Shibasaki's Li 3(THF) n (BINOLate) 3Ln complexes cannot bind bidentate substrates in a chelating fashion. A hypothesis is also presented to explain why the lanthanide catalyst, Li 3(THF) n (BINOLate) 3La, is often the most enantioselective of the Li 3(THF) n (BINOLate) 3Ln derivatives.

We describe a general multinuclear (1H, 23Na, 87Rb) NMR approach for direct detection of alkali metal ions bound to G-quadruplex DNA. This study is motivated by our recent discovery that alkali metal ions (Na+, K+, Rb+) tightly bound to G-quadruplex DNA are actually "NMR visible" in solution (Wong, A.; Ida, R.; Wu, G. Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 2005, 337, 363). Here solution and solid-state NMR methods are developed for studying ion binding to the classic G-quadruplex structures formed by three DNA oligomers: d(TG4T), d(G4T3G4), and d(G4T4G4). The present study yields the following major findings. (1) Alkali metal ions tightly bound to G-quadruplex DNA can be directly observed by NMR in solution. (2) Competitive ion binding to the G-quadruplex channel site can be directly monitored by simultaneous NMR detection of the two competing ions. (3) Na+ ions are found to locate in the diagonal T4 loop region of the G-quadruplex formed by two strands of d(G4T4G4). This is the first time that direct NMR evidence has been found for alkali metal ion binding to the diagonal T4 loop in solution. We propose that the loop Na+ ion is located above the terminal G-quartet, coordinating to four guanine O6 atoms from the terminal G-quartet and one O2 atom from a loop thymine base and one water molecule. This Na+ ion coordination is supported by quantum chemical calculations on 23Na chemical shifts. Variable-temperature 23Na NMR results have revealed that the channel and loop Na+ ions in d(G4T4G4) exhibit very different ion mobilities. The loop Na+ ions have a residence lifetime of 220 micros at 15 degrees C, whereas the residence lifetime of Na+ ions residing inside the G-quadruplex channel is 2 orders of magnitude longer. (4) We have found direct 23Na NMR evidence that mixed K+ and Na+ ions occupy the d(G4T4G4) G-quadruplex channel when both Na+ and K+ ions are present in solution. (5) The high spectral resolution observed in this study is unprecedented in solution 23Na NMR studies of biological macromolecules. Our results strongly suggest that multinuclear NMR is a viable technique for studying ion binding to G-quadruplex DNA.

Alkali metals and their alloys can be protected from spontaneous reaction with dry air by intercalation (with subsequent heating) into the pores of silica gel (SG) at loadings up to 40 wt %. The resulting loose, black powders are convenient materials for chemical reduction of organic compounds and the production of clean hydrogen. The problem addressed in this paper is the nature of the reducing species present in these amorphous materials. The atomic pair distribution function (PDF), which considers both Bragg and diffuse scattering components, was used to examine their structures. Liquid Na-K alloys added to silica gel at room temperature (stage 0) or heated to 150 degrees C (stage I) as well as stage I Na-SG, retain the overall pattern of pure silica gel. Broad oscillations in the PDF show that added alkali metals remain in the pores as nanoscale metal clusters. 23Na MAS NMR studies confirm the presence of Na(0) and demonstrate that Na+ ions are formed as well. The relative amounts of Na(0) and Na(+) depend on both the overall metal loading and the average pore size. The results suggest that ionization occurs near or in the SiO2 walls, with neutral metal present in the larger cavities. The fate of the electrons released by ionization is uncertain, but they may add to the silica gel lattice, or form an "electride-like plasma" near the silica gel walls. A remaining mystery is why the stage I material does not show a melting endotherm of the encapsulated metal and does not react with dry oxygen. Na-SG when heated to 400 degrees C (stage II) yields a dual-phase reaction product that consists of Na(4)Si(4) and Na(2)SiO(3).

The gas-phase structures of protonated and alkali metal cationized arginine (Arg) and arginine methyl ester (ArgOMe) are investigated with infrared spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Infrared spectra, measured in the hydrogen-stretch region, provide compelling evidence that arginine changes from its nonzwitterionic to zwitterionic form with increasing metal ion size, with the transition in structure occurring between lithium and sodium. For sodiated arginine, evidence for both forms is obtained from spectral deconvolution, although the zwitterionic form is predominant. Comparisons of the photodissociation spectra with spectra calculated for low-energy candidate structures provide additional insights into the detailed structures of these ions. Arg*Li+, ArgOMe*Li+, and ArgOMe*Na+ exist in nonzwitterionic forms in which the metal ion is tricoordinated with the amino acid, whereas Arg*Na+ and Arg*K+ predominately exist in a zwitterionic form where the protonated side chain donates one hydrogen bond to the N terminus of the amino acid and the metal ion is bicoordinated with the carboxylate group. Arg*H+ and ArgOMe*H+ have protonated side chains that form the same interaction with the N terminus as zwitterionic, alkali metal cationized arginine, yet both are unambiguously determined to be nonzwitterionic. Calculations indicate that for clusters with protonated side chains, structures with two strong hydrogen bonds are lowest in energy, in disagreement with these experimental results. This study provides new detailed structural assignments and interpretations of previously observed fragmentation patterns for these ions.

Alkylation of nanotube salts prepared using either lithium, sodium, or potassium in liquid ammonia yields sidewall-functionalized nanotubes that are soluble in organic solvents. Atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy studies of dodecylated SWNTs prepared from HiPco nanotubes and 1-iodododecane show that extensive debundling results from intercalation of the alkali metal into the SWNT ropes. TGA-FTIR analyses of samples prepared from the different metals revealed radically different thermal behavior during detachment of the dodecyl groups. The SWNTs prepared using lithium can be converted into the pristine SWNTs at 180-330 degrees C, whereas the dodecylated SWNTs prepared using sodium require a much higher temperature (380-530 degrees C) for dealkylation. SWNTs prepared using potassium behave differently, leading to detachment of the alkyl groups over the temperature range 180-500 degrees C. These differences can be observed by analysis of the solid-state 13C NMR spectra of the dodecylated SWNTs that have been prepared using the different alkali metals and may indicate differences in the relative amounts of 1,2- and 1,4-addition of the alkyl groups.

Cyclic diguanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) is known to be an important signaling molecule that regulates the formation of bacterial biofilms. We demonstrate here by UV, CD, and NMR that it displays a surprising polymorphism that varies with the monovalent counterion and is consistent with the formation of a G-quartet structure in K+ and a stacked structure in Li+ or Na+. The ability of this rigid molecule to adopt different alignments may be important to its biological role.

The influence of halogenation on the properties of uracil and its noncovalent interactions with alkali metal ions is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Bond dissociation energies of alkali metal ion-halouracil complexes, M+(XU), are determined using threshold collision-induced dissociation techniques in a guided ion beam mass spectrometer, where M+ = Li+, Na+, and K+ and XU = 5-fluorouracil, 5-chlorouracil, 6-chlorouracil, 5-bromouracil, and 5-iodouracil. The structures and theoretical bond dissociation energies of these complexes are determined from ab initio calculations. Theoretical calculations are also performed to examine the influence of halogenation on the acidities, proton affinities, and Watson-Crick base pairing energies. Halogenation of uracil is found to produce a decrease in the proton affinity, an increase in the alkali metal ion binding affinities, an increase in the acidity, and stabilization of the A::U base pair. In addition, alkali metal ion binding is expected to lead to an increase in the stability of nucleic acids by reducing the charge on the nucleic acid in a zwitterion effect as well as through additional noncovalent interactions between the alkali metal ion and the nucleobases.

We report a solid-state multinuclear ((23)Na, (15)N, (13)C, and (31)P) NMR study on the relative affinity of monovalent cations for a stacking G-quartet structure formed by guanosine 5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP) self-association at pH 8. Two major types of cations are bound to the 5'-GMP structure: one at the surface and the other within the channel cavity between two G-quartets. The channel cation is coordinated to eight carbonyl oxygen atoms from the guanine bases, whereas the surface cation is close to the phosphate group and likely to be only partially hydrated. On the basis of solid-state (23)Na NMR results from a series of ion titration experiments, we have obtained quantitative thermodynamic parameters concerning the relative cation binding affinity for each of the two major binding sites. For the channel cavity site, the values of the free energy difference (Delta G degrees at 25 degrees C) for ion competition between M(+) and Na(+) ions are K(+) (-1.9 kcal mol(-1)), NH(4)(+) (-1.8 kcal mol(-1)), Rb(+) (-0.3 kcal mol(-1)), and Cs(+) (1.8 kcal mol(-1)). For the surface site, the values Delta G degrees are K(+) (2.5 kcal mol(-1)), NH(4)(+) (-1.3 kcal mol(-1)), Rb(+) (1.1 kcal mol(-1)), and Cs(+) (0.9 kcal mol(-1)). Solid-state NMR data suggest that the affinity of monovalent cations for the 5'-GMP structure follows the order NH(4)(+)Na(+)Cs(+)Rb(+)K(+) at the surface site and K(+)NH(4)(+)Rb(+)Na(+)Cs(+)Li(+) at the channel cavity site. We have found that the cation-induced stability of a 5'-GMP structure is determined only by the affinity of monovalent cations for the channel site and that the binding of monovalent cations to phosphate groups plays no role in 5'-GMP self-ordered structure. We have demonstrated that solid-state (23)Na and (15)N NMR can be used simultaneously to provide mutually complementary information about competitive binding between Na(+) and NH(4)(+) ions.

Triphenylene derivatives possessing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) units exhibited discotic nematic (ND) phases at room temperature. Unique phase transition from a ND phase to a hexagonal columnar (Colh) phase was triggered by the addition of alkali metal salts. This phase transition was dependent on the type of the counterion of alkali metal salts added.

Weakly solvated, low charge density, alkali metal cations (K+ and Rb+) destabilize tryptophan zipper (trpzip) peptides with an effectiveness (for Rb+) similar to that of the protein denaturant urea. An analysis of alkali metal cation effects on polypeptides stabilized predominantly either by hydrogen bonds or by the classical hydrophobic effect indicates that the alkali metals attenuate stabilizing interactions involving the tryptophan indole groups. Destabilization does not result from electrolyte screening of the electrostatic component of the indole-indole interaction, but is likely to involve direct interaction of the low charge density cation with the indole group in a cation-pi interaction. The observations highlight a general simplicity in the nature of molecular interactions in solution, in which stabilizing contributions to polypeptide and protein structures are attenuated by solutes of a complementary nature.

A simple, one-step method has been utilized to synthesize functional ternary alkali titanate nanowires of single crystallinity. Nanostructural characterization shows that the nanowires are Na2Ti6O13 with [010] growth direction and KTi8O16.5 with [001] growth direction.
