Abstract

Single-pulse shock tube kinetic and tunable diode laser infrared spectroscopic methods were used to analyze cyclohexene-3,3,6,6-d4 and the 4, 5-cis isomers of cyclohexene-1,2,3,4,5,6-d6 for the retro Diels-Alder reactions. Ethylene-1,1-d2 and trans-ethylene-1,2-d2 resulted from the two cyclohexenes. A comparatively negligible, straightforward transformation of cyclohexene to ethylene plus butadiene through a stereochemically nonconservative route with a diradical intermediate may be part of the systematic process resulting in these products.

Abstract

The tunable diode laser spectroscopy method is useful to calculate geometrical isomerization of labeled cyclopropane rate constants and offers several improvements over infrared spectroscopic method. These include enhanced resolution over a small fractional wave number range, permitting the distinctions between vibrational-rotational transitions due to stereochemically divergent labeled isomers.

New research indicates that thermal Diels-Alder and retro-Diels-Alder reactions involve families of trajectories over the transition region of the potential energy surface. Conformational opportunities and entropic factors could determine reaction stereochemistry.
