Abstract

Channel electrophoresis is one of several analytical techniques used for separating various chemical species. Capable of providing sampling and electrophoretic separations, the development of this form of electrophoresis is hindered by electrochemical detection schemes that have failed to live up to expectations. To remedy this problem, a unique electrochemical detection scheme for channel electrophoresis is developed.

Abstract

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SMIS) is used for observing the label-free lipid localization determined by acyl chain saturation and its effect on cholesterol (CH) domain formation. The results have shown that the high saturation level of sphingomyelin (SM) acyl chains in the cellular membrane is an important driving force for SM colocalization with CH in lipid rafts.

Abstract

The article presents a study regarding the use of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) in determining the biological interactions between sphingomyelin (SM) and cholesterol (CH). The result indicates that the inclusion of SM into the domains of CH is urged by the phospholipids acyl chain saturation and not by their hydrogen bonding. This acyl chain saturation is also the main factor in identifying the phase separation of CH, SM and phosphatidylcholine (PC).
