The crystal packing of organic chromophores has a profound impact on their photophysical properties. Molecular crystal engineering is generally incapable of producing precisely spaced arrays of molecules for use in photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and sensors. A promising alternative strategy is the incorporation of chromophores into crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), leading to matrix coordination-induced emission (MCIE) upon confinement. However, it remains unclear how the precise arrangement of chromophores and defects dictates photophysical properties in these systems, limiting the rational design of well-defined photoluminescent materials. Small molecule redox mediators convey interfacial electron transfer events into bulk solution and can enable diverse substrate activation mechanisms in synthetic electrocatalysis. Here we report that 1,2-diiodo-4,5-dimethoxybenzene is an efficient electrocatalyst for C–H/E–H coupling that operates at as low as 0.5 mol% catalyst loading. Spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational results indicate a critical role for a three-electron I–I bonding interaction in stabilizing an iodanyl radical intermediate (i.e., formally I(II) species). As a result, the optimized catalyst operates at more than 100 mV lower potential than the related monoiodide catalyst 4-iodoanisole, which results in improved product yield, higher Faradaic efficiency, and expanded substrate scope. The isolated iodanyl radical is chemically competent in C–N bond formation. These results represent the first examples of substrate functionalization at a well-defined I(II) derivative and bona fide iodanyl radical catalysis and demonstrate one-electron pathways as a mechanistic alternative to canonical two-electron hypervalent iodine mechanisms. The observation establishes I–I redox cooperation as a new design concept for the development of metal-free redox mediators.

We report enantioselective one-carbon ring expansion of aziridines to make azetidines as a new-to-nature activity of engineered “carbene transferase” enzymes. A laboratory-evolved variant of cytochrome P450_(BM3), P411-AzetS, not only exerts unparalleled stereocontrol (99:1 er) over a [1,2]-Stevens rearrangement but also overrides the inherent reactivity of aziridinium ylides, cheletropic extrusion of olefins, to perform a [1,2]-Stevens rearrangement. By controlling the fate of the highly reactive aziridinium ylide intermediates, these evolvable biocatalysts promote a transformation which cannot currently be performed using other catalyst classes.

Aryl halides are a fundamental motif in synthetic chemistry, playing a critical role in metal-mediated cross-coupling reactions and serving as important scaffolds in drug discovery. Although thermal decarboxylative functionalization of aryl carboxylic acids has been extensively explored, the scope of existing halodecarboxylation methods remains limited, and there currently exists no unified strategy that provides access to any type of aryl halide from an aryl carboxylic acid precursor. Herein, we report a general catalytic method for direct decarboxylative halogenation of (hetero)aryl carboxylic acids via ligand-to-metal charge transfer. This strategy accommodates an exceptionally broad scope of substrates. We leverage an aryl radical intermediate toward divergent functionalization pathways: (1) atom transfer to access bromo- or iodo(hetero)arenes or (2) radical capture by copper and subsequent reductive elimination to generate chloro- or fluoro(hetero)arenes. The proposed ligand-to-metal charge transfer mechanism is supported through an array of spectroscopic studies.

Intracellular protein delivery enables selective regulation of cellular metabolism, signaling, and development through introduction of defined protein quantities into the cell. Most applications require that the delivered protein has access to the cytosol, either for protein activity or as a gateway to other organelles such as the nucleus. The vast majority of delivery vehicles employ an endosomal pathway however, and efficient release of entrapped protein cargo from the endosome remains a challenge. Recent research has made significant advances toward efficient cytosolic delivery of proteins using polymers, but the influence of polymer architecture on protein delivery is yet to be investigated. Here, we developed a family of dendronized polymers that enable systematic alterations of charge density and structure. We demonstrate that while modulation of surface functionality has a significant effect on overall delivery efficiency, the endosomal release rate can be highly regulated by manipulating polymer architecture. Notably, we show that large, multivalent structures cause slower sustained release, while rigid spherical structures result in rapid burst release.

The most probable single-molecule conductance of each member of a series of 12 conjugated molecular wires, 6 of which contain either a ruthenium or platinum center centrally placed within the backbone, has been determined. The measurement of a small, positive Seebeck coefficient has established that transmission through these molecules takes place by tunneling through the tail of the HOMO resonance near the middle of the HOMO-LUMO gap in each case. Despite the general similarities in the molecular lengths and frontier-orbital compositions, experimental and computationally determined trends in molecular conductance values across this series cannot be satisfactorily explained in terms of commonly discussed "single-parameter" models of junction conductance. Rather, the trends in molecular conductance are better rationalized from consideration of the complete molecular junction, with conductance values well described by transport calculations carried out at the DFT level of theory, on the basis of the Landauer-Büttiker model.

This work explores the mechanism whereby a cationic diimine Pd(II) complex combines coordination insertion and radical polymerization to form polyolefin-polar block copolymers. The initial requirement involves the insertion of a single acrylate monomer into the Pd(II)-polyolefin intermediates, which generate a stable polymeric chelate through a chain-walking mechanism. This thermodynamically stable chelate was also found to be photochemically inactive, and a unique mechanism was discovered which allows for radical polymerization. Rate-determining opening of the chelate by an ancillary ligand followed by additional chain walking allows the metal to migrate to the α-carbon of the acrylate moiety. Ultimately, the molecular parameters necessary for blue-light-triggered Pd-C bond homolysis from this α-carbon to form a carbon-centered macroradical species were established. This intermediate is understood to initiate free radical polymerization of acrylic monomers, thereby facilitating block copolymer synthesis from a single Pd(II) complex. Key intermediates were isolated and comprehensively characterized through exhaustive analytical methods which detail the mechanism while confirming the structural integrity of the polyolefin-polar blocks. Chain walking combined with blue-light irradiation functions as the mechanistic switch from coordination insertion to radical polymerization. On the basis of these discoveries, robust di- and triblock copolymer syntheses have been demonstrated with olefins (ethylene and 1-hexene) which produce amorphous or crystalline blocks and acrylics (methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and methyl methacrylate) in broad molecular weight ranges and compositions, yielding AB diblocks and BAB triblocks.

While X-ray crystallography routinely provides structural characterization of kinetically stable pre-catalysts and intermediates, elucidation of the structures of transient reactive intermediates, which are intimately engaged in bond-breaking and -making during catalysis, is generally not possible. Here, we demonstrate in crystallo synthesis of Rh2 nitrenoids that participate in catalytic C-H amination, and we characterize these transient intermediates as triplet adducts of Rh2. Further, we observe the impact of coordinating substrate, which is present in excess during catalysis, on the structure of transient Rh2 nitrenoids. By providing structural characterization of authentic C-H functionalization intermediates, and not kinetically stabilized model complexes, these experiments provide the opportunity to define critical structure-activity relationships.

International audience; The precise preparation of monodisperse nanomaterials is among the most fundamental tasks in inorganic synthesis and materials science. Achieving this goal by galvanic exchange is hardly predictable and often results in major structural changes and polydisperse mixtures. Taking advantage of the enhanced stability imparted by ambiphilic carbenes, we report and rationalize the absolute templating, the complete exchange of metals in a template, of group 11 clusters across the entire coinage metal family by means of galvanic exchange. We further delineate that these species provide a molecular model for better understanding the reduction of CO 2 at M(111) coinage metal surfaces.

Development of new electrosynthetic chemistry promises to impact the efficiency and sustainability of organic synthesis. Here we demonstrate that anodically generated hypervalent iodine intermediates effectively couple interfacial electron transfer with oxidative C-H/N-H coupling chemistry. The developed hypervalent iodine electrocatalysis is applicable in both intra- and intermolecular C-N bond-forming reactions. Available mechanistic data indicate that anodic oxidation of aryl iodides generates a transient I(II) intermediate that is critically stabilized by added acetate ions. This report represents the first example of metal-free hypervalent iodine electrocatalysis for C-H functionalization and provides mechanistic insight that we anticipate will contribute to the development of hypervalent iodine mediators for synthetic electrochemistry.

A series of 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl ruthenium complexes with carbonyl ligands were prepared and studied using a combination of electrochemical and spectroscopic methods with infrared detection to provide structural information on reaction intermediates in the photochemical reduction of CO2 to formate in acetonitrile (CH3CN). An unsaturated 5-coordinate intermediate was characterized, and the hydride-transfer step to CO2 from a singly reduced metal-hydride complex was observed with kinetic resolution. While triethanolamine (TEOA) was expected to act as a proton acceptor to ensure the sacrificial behavior of 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole as an electron donor, time-resolved infrared measurements revealed that about 90% of the photogenerated one-electron reduced complexes undergo unproductive back electron transfer. Furthermore, TEOA showed the ability to capture CO2 from CH3CN solutions to form a zwitterionic alkylcarbonate adduct and was actively engaged in key catalytic steps such as metal-hydride formation, hydride transfer to CO2 to form the bound formate intermediate, and dissociation of formate ion product. Collectively, the data provide an overview of the transient intermediates of Ru(II) carbonyl complexes and emphasize the importance of considering the participation of TEOA when investigating and proposing catalytic pathways.

We report here a photocatalytic method for the intermolecular anti-Markovnikov hydroamination of unactivated olefins with primary alkyl amines to selectively furnish secondary amine products. These reactions proceed through aminium radical cation (ARC) intermediates and occur at room temperature under visible light irradiation in the presence of an iridium photocatalyst and an aryl thiol hydrogen atom donor. Despite the presence of excess olefin, high selectivities are observed for secondary over tertiary amine products, even though the secondary amines are established substrates for ARC-based olefin amination under similar conditions.
