Hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation are significant and distinct approaches for the conversion of biomass and biomass-derived oxygenated chemicals into high value-added chemicals and fuels. However, it remains a great challenge to synthesize catalysts that simultaneously possess excellent hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation performance. Herein, we report a catalyst made of isolated single-atom Ru supported on mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (Ru1/mpg-C3N4), fabricated by a wet impregnation method. The as-prepared Ru1/mpg-C3N4 catalyst shows excellent hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation performance. First-principles calculations reveal that the Ru atom is mobilized, and the active site is induced by adsorption of the reactants. A systematic reaction mechanism is proposed, suggesting that vanillyl alcohol is the deoxygenation prohibited product, while 2-methoxy- p-cresol is the deoxygenation allowed product. Thus, the excellent selectivity for the hydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin at different temperatures results from switching between the two types of products.

Chiral aldehyde catalysis is uniquely suitable for the direct asymmetric α-functionalization of N-unprotected amino acids, because aldehydes can reversibly form imines. However, there have been few successful reports of these transformations. In fact, only chiral aldehyde catalyzed aldol reactions of amino acids and alkylation of 2-amino malonates have been reported with good chiral induction. Here, we report a novel type of chiral aldehyde catalyst based on face control of the enolate intermediates. The resulting chiral aldehyde is the first efficient nonpyridoxal-dependent catalyst that can promote the direct asymmetric α-functionalization of N-unprotected glycine esters. Possible transition states and the proton transfer process were investigated by density functional theory calculations.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water through electrocatalysis using cost-effective materials to replace precious Pt catalysts holds great promise for clean energy technologies. In this work we developed a highly active and stable catalyst containing Co doped earth abundant iron pyrite FeS(2) nanosheets hybridized with carbon nanotubes (Fe(1-x)CoxS(2)/CNT hybrid catalysts) for HER in acidic solutions. The pyrite phase of Fe(1-x)CoxS(2)/CNT was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements showed a low overpotential of ∼0.12 V at 20 mA/cm(2), small Tafel slope of ∼46 mV/decade, and long-term durability over 40 h of HER operation using bulk quantities of Fe(0.9)Co(0.1)S(2)/CNT hybrid catalysts at high loadings (∼7 mg/cm(2)). Density functional theory calculation revealed that the origin of high catalytic activity stemmed from a large reduction of the kinetic energy barrier of H atom adsorption on FeS(2) surface upon Co doping in the iron pyrite structure. It is also found that the high HER catalytic activity of Fe(0.9)Co(0.1)S(2) hinges on the hybridization with CNTs to impart strong heteroatomic interactions between CNT and Fe(0.9)Co(0.1)S(2). This work produces the most active HER catalyst based on iron pyrite, suggesting a scalable, low cost, and highly efficient catalyst for hydrogen generation.

The finding of new metal alloyed nanocrystals (NCs) with high catalytic activity and low cost to replace PtRu NCs is a critical step toward the commercialization of fuel cells. In this work, a simple cation replacement reaction was utilized to synthesize a new type of ternary Fe(1-x)PtRu(x) NCs from binary FePt NCs. The detailed structural transformation from binary FePt NCs to ternary Fe(1-x)PtRu(x) NCs was analyzed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Ternary Fe(35)Pt(40)Ru(25), Fe(31)Pt(40)Ru(29), and Fe(17)Pt(40)Ru(43) NCs exhibit superior catalytic ability to withstand CO poisoning in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) than do binary NCs (FePt and J-M PtRu). Also, the Fe(31)Pt(40)Ru(29) NCs had the highest alloying extent and the lowest onset potential among the ternary NCs. Furthermore, the origin for the superior CO resistance of ternary Fe(1-x)PtRu(x) NCs was investigated by determining the adsorption energy of CO on the NCs' surfaces and the charge transfer from Fe/Ru to Pt using a simulation based on density functional theory. The simulation results suggested that by introducing a new metal into binary PtRu/PtFe NCs, the anti-CO poisoning ability of ternary Fe(1-x)PtRu(x) NCs was greatly enhanced because the bonding of CO-Pt on the NCs' surface was weakened. Overall, our experimental and simulation results have indicated a simple route for the discovery of new metal alloyed catalysts with superior anti-CO poisoning ability and low usage of Pt and Ru for fuel cell applications.

New noncentrosymmetric rare-earth metal gallium thioantimonates, Ln(4)GaSbS(9) were synthesized from stoichiometric element mixtures at 950 °C by high-temperature solid-state reactions. These compounds crystallize in orthorhombic space group Aba2 (no.41) with a = 13.799(3)-13.427(5) Å, b = 14.187(3)-13.756(5) Å, c = 14.323(3)-13.954(5) Å, V = 2804(2)-2577 (2) Å(3), and Z = 8 on going from Ln = Pr to Ho. The asymmetric building units, bimetallic polar (Sb(2)S(5)) units, and dimeric (GaS(4))(2) tetrahedra are in-phase aligned as an infinite single anionic chain of {[(Ga(2)S(6))(Sb(2)S(5))](10-)}(∞) that is further packed in a noncentrosymmetric pseudolayer motif perpendicular to the c axis. Three of the title compounds show large powder second harmonic generation (SHG) effects at 2.05 μm, and two of them also exhibit large transparency ranges (1.75 or 0.75 to 25 μm) in the middle-IR region. Significantly, the Sm-member exhibits the strongest SHG response among sulfides to date with intensity approximately 3.8 times that of the benchmark AgGaS(2). The band structures, indirect band gap nature, bonding strengths, and lone pair effects around Sb have also been studied by Vienna ab initio simulation package calculations.

The conjugates of gold nanorods and the model drug, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), embedded inside polyelectrolytes (GNRs/FITC@PLE) were synthesized to study the release kinetics of FITC under femtosecond near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation. The optical and structural properties of GNRs/FITC@PLE conjugates before and after laser treatments were examined using UV-vis spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The release of FITC from the conjugates was induced by the heat generated from gold nanorods under laser irradiation. The concentration of released FITC was measured as the time of continuous and periodic laser irradiation was varied. Within 5 min of the laser exposure, the release rates of FITC exhibited zero-order and first-order kinetics under continuous and periodic irradiation, respectively. Furthermore, a drug release system was designed based on the conjugates of gold nanorods and the anticancer drug, paclitaxel (PTX), embedded inside polyelectrolytes (GNRs/PTX@PLE). The conjugates were applied for in vitro studies with breast cancer cells. The release of PTX from the conjugates was triggered by NIR laser irradiation, and the inhibition rates of the cells showed strong dependencies on the irradiation modes and time. The results suggested that the multiple releases of PTX from the conjugates can be controlled by laser irradiation within a long period of time. Our system holds great potential for future therapeutic applications on breast cancers.

Ammonium ylides have a long history in organic synthesis, but their application in asymmetric catalysis is still underdeveloped in regard to both substrate scope and reaction pathways compared with phosphorus and sulfur ylides. Here a previously unreported asymmetric [4 + 1] annulation reaction of 3-bromooxindoles and electron-deficient 1-azadienes has been developed through ammonium ylide catalysis of a newly designed 2'-methyl α-isocupreine (α-MeIC), efficiently delivering spirocyclic oxindole compounds incorporating a dihydropyrrole motif in excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee). To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first example of asymmetric catalysis of ammonium ylides bearing α-substitutions, and the catalytic [4 + 1] annulation pathway of ammonium ylides is also unprecedented. Moreover, (1)H NMR, mass spectroscopy, and computational calculation studies were conducted, and the catalytic cycle and a tentative explanation of the enantioselective mechanism have been successfully elucidated.

The preparation of high-purity and -quality gallium nitride nanowires is accomplished by a catalytic growth using gallium and ammonium. A series of catalysts and different reaction parameters were applied to systematically optimize and control the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth of the nanowires. The resulting nanowires show predominantly wurtzite phase; they were up to several micrometers in length, typically with diameters of 10-50 nm. A minimum nanowire diameter of 6 nm has been achieved. Temperature dependence of photoluminescence spectra of the nanowires revealed that the emission mainly comes from wurtzite GaN with little contribution from the cubic phase. Moreover, the thermal quenching of photoluminescence was much reduced in the GaN nanowires. The Raman spectra showed five first-order phonon modes. The frequencies of these peaks were close to those of the bulk GaN, but the modes were significantly broadened, which is indicative of the phonon confinement effects associated with the nanoscale dimensions of the system. Additional Raman modes, not observed in the bulk GaN, were found in the nanowires. The field emission study showing notable emission current with low turn-on field suggests potential of the GaN nanowires in field emission applications. This work opens a wide route toward detailed studies of the fundamental properties and potential applications of semiconductor nanowires.

The chiral sulfide, isothiocineole, has been synthesized in one step from elemental sulfur, gamma-terpinene, and limonene in 61% yield. A mechanism involving radical intermediates for this reaction is proposed based on experimental evidence. The application of isothiocineole to the asymmetric epoxidation of aldehydes and the aziridination of imines is described. Excellent enantioselectivities and diastereoselectivities have been obtained over a wide range of aromatic, aliphatic, and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes using simple protocols. In aziridinations, excellent enantioselectivities and good diastereoselectivities were obtained for a wide range of imines. Mechanistic models have been put forward to rationalize the high selectivities observed, which should enable the sulfide to be used with confidence in synthesis. In epoxidations, the degree of reversibility in betaine formation dominates both the diastereoselectivity and the enantioselectivity. Appropriate tuning of reaction conditions based on understanding the reaction mechanism enables high selectivities to be obtained in most cases. In aziridinations, betaine formation is nonreversible with semistabilized ylides and diastereoselectivities are determined in the betaine forming step and are more variable as a result.

Switchable reaction patterns of β-substituted cyclic enones via amine-based dienamine activation are reported. While γ-regioselective vinylogous Michael addition was observed with alkylidenemalononitriles, a completely different [4 + 2] cycloaddition was obtained with allylidene- or alkynylidenemalononitrile substrates, affording densely substituted bicyclo[2.2.2]octanes or analogous architectures with moderate to excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivity by the catalysis of primary amines from natural quinidine or quinine. Importantly, high diastereodivergence was achieved through unusual hydrogen-bonding interactions of multifunctional primary-amine catalytic systems. Endo cycloadducts were efficiently produced using a combination of 9-amino-9-deoxyepiquinidine and salicylic acid, while exo variants were obtained using 6'-hydroxy-9-amino-9-deoxyepiquinidine. Moreover, we successfully isolated the Michael addition intermediates in some cases, indicating that the above [4 + 2] reaction via dienamine catalysis may proceed by a stepwise Michael-Michael cascade rather than by a concerted Diels-Alder cycloaddition pathway.

An unusual zero-dimensional quaternary sulfide, Ba(23)Ga(8)Sb(2)S(38), that crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric polar space group Cmc2(1) was discovered by solid-state reaction of an elemental mixture. The involvement of a second building unit consisting of SbS(3) pyramid and constituting 20% of the structure helped to realize the disconnection of the asymmetric GaS(4) tetrahedra. Such a disconnection leads to the strongest powder second harmonic generation intensity in the IR region among sulfides to date, ~22 times that of commercial AgGaS(2) at an incident laser wavelength of 2.05 μm with the same particle size of 46-74 μm.

Methods to rapidly and reversibly perturb the functions of specific proteins are desirable tools for studies of complex biological processes. We have demonstrated an experimental strategy to regulate the intracellular concentration of any protein of interest by using an engineered destabilizing protein domain and a cell-permeable small molecule. Destabilizing domains have general utility to confer instability to a wide range of proteins including integral transmembrane proteins. This study reports a destabilizing domain system based on the ligand binding domain of the estrogen receptor that can be regulated by one of two synthetic ligands, CMP8 or 4-hydroxytamoxifen.

The discovery of a novel activation mode provided by organocatalysis is presented. It is demonstrated that the merger of optically active secondary amines and polyenals generates reactive trienamine intermediates, which readily participate in Diels-Alder reactions with different classes of dienophiles, hence, providing a facile entry to highly complex molecular frameworks with excellent stereocontrol. For the Diels-Alder reactions with 3-olefinic oxindoles, spirocyclic oxidoles are formed in high yields, and with enantioselectivities in the range of 94-98% ee. It is demonstrated, that some of these products can be transformed into the hexahydrofuro[2,3-b]indole fragment. The organocatalytic trienamine concept has been extended to also include Diels-Alder reactions of olefins substituted with cyanoacetates providing multifunctional cyclohexenes with three contiguous stereocenters in high yield and good stereocontrol. The novelty of this activation strategy lies within the perfect chirality relay over a distance of up to eight bonds. Moreover, we also present the first trienamine tandem reaction by combining trienamine catalysis with enamine activation. In addition to the experimental results, a detailed mechanistic survey is also provided including NMR spectroscopic studies and calculations of the reactive trienamine intermediates, rationalizing the origin of stereochemistry.

The water-solvable FePt nanoparticles of 3, 6, and 12 nm in diameter (3 nm-, 6 nm-, and 12 nm-FePt) were synthesized and applied as a dual modality contrast agent for CT/MRI molecular imaging. These nanoparticles present excellent biocompatibility and hemocompatibility in all test concentrations for the imaging contrast. The biodistribution analysis revealed the highest serum concentration and circulation half-life for 12 nm-FePt, followed by 6 nm-FePt then 3 nm-FePt. Thus, the 3 nm-FePt showed higher brain concentrations. Anti-Her2 antibody conjugated FePt nanoparticles demonstrated molecular expression dependent CT/MRI dual imaging contrast effect in MBT2 cell line and its Her2/neu gene knock out counterpart. Selective contrast enhancement of Her2/neu overexpression cancer lesions in both CT and MRI was found in tumor bearing animal after tail vein injection of the nanoparticles. The 12 nm-FePt outperformed 3 nm-FePt in both imaging modalities. These results indicate the potential of FePt nanoparticles to serve as novel multimodal molecular imaging contrast agents in clinical settings.

To examine the quenching of a triplet exciton by low triplet energy (E(T)) polymer hosts with different chain configurations for high E(T) phosphor guests, the quenching rate constant measurements were carried out and analyzed by the standard Stern-Volmer equation. We found that an effective shielding of triplet energy transfer from a high E(T) phosphor guest to a low E(T) polymer host is possible upon introducing dense side chains to the polymer to block direct contact from the guest such that the possibility of Dexter energy transfer between them is reduced to a minimum. Together with energy level matching to allow charge trapping on the guest, high device efficiency can be achieved. The extent of shielding for the systems of phenylene-based conjugated structures from iridium complexes follows the sequence di-substituted (octoxyl chain) in the para position (dC8OPPP) is greater than monosubstituted (mC8OPPP) and the PPPs with longer side chains are much higher than a phenylene tetramer (P4) with two short methyl groups. Further, capping the dialkoxyl-susbstituents with a carbazole (Cz) moiety (CzPPP) provides enhanced extent of shielding. Excellent device efficiency of 30 cd/A (8.25%) for a green electrophosphorescent device can be achieved with CzPPP as a host, which is higher than that of dC8OPPP as host (15 cd/A). The efficiency is higher than those of high E(T) conjugated polymers, poly(3,6-carbazole) derivatives, as hosts (23 cd/A). This observation suggests a new route for molecular design of electroluminescent polymers as a host for a phosphorescent dopant.

Subsequent reaction with formalin smoothly provides N-Boc-β-amino-α-methylene carboxylic esters in a highly enantiomerically enriched form (up to 96% ee).

The first direct asymmetric vinylogous Mannich (AVM) reaction of alpha,alpha-dicyanoolefins and N-Boc aldimines was described promoted by a simple chiral bifunctional thiourea-tertairy amine organocatalyst. The reaction was highly efficient (S/C up to 1000) and regio-, stereoselective (generally99% de, 96 to99.5% ee) at room temperature for a broad array of substrates. Enantiomerically pure delta-amino acid could be smoothly prepared from the adduct.

New ternary metal nanocrystals of Fe1-xPtMx (M = Ru3+, Sn2+, or Ni2+) were synthesized by chemical transformation from FePt nanocrystals using a cation redox reaction in a solution. The structure and composition of resulting nanocrystals were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) was employed to confirm the chemical transformation from FePt to Fe1-xPtRux nanocrystals. The analyses of extended X-ray absorption find structure (EXAFS) revealed the detailed binding structures and coordination numbers of both FePt and Fe1-xPtRux nanocrystals. The results suggested that iron atoms of FePt lattices were oxidized to be Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions and were replaced by ruthenium atoms from the reduction of Ru3+ ions in solution to form Fe1-xPtRux lattices. We report the conjugated polymer P(tBu-CBP) as a host with high triplet energy (E(T) 2.53 eV) and suitable HOMO (5.3 eV) and LUMO (2.04 eV) energy levels. Upon doping with green and red emission Ir-complexes, it gives devices with high luminous and external quantum efficiencies for green emission (23.7 cd/A, 6.57%) and for red emission (5.1 cd/A, 4.23%), respectively, and low turn-on voltage (3 V). For both devices, the efficiencies are higher than those of the corresponding devices with the same backbone P(3,6-Cz) as a host by a factor of 4, even though the latter has an E(T) (2.6 eV) slightly higher than that of the former. The results reflect that, in phosphorescent devices, the difference in E(T) between the host and guest is not the only factor that determines the device efficiency, and the present side group modification via the 9 position of carbazole also plays an important role, which allows a tuning of HOMO and LUMO levels to provide more balance in electron and hole fluxes and provides prevention from formation of excimer.

The synthesis, characterization and biological application of mannose encapsulated gold nanoparticles (m-AuNP) are reported. m-AuNP is well dispersed and very stable without aggregation in the media of broad ion strength and pH ranges. The selective binding of m-AuNP to the mannose adhesin FimH of bacterial type 1 pili is demonstrated using transmission electron microscopy. The competition assay with free mannose suggests that m-AuNP binds FimH better than free mannose does. This work demonstrates that carbohydrate attached nanoparticles can be used as an efficient affinity label and a multi-ligand carrier in a biological system.
