Aqueous solutions of polyoxometalates (POMs) have been shown to have potential as high-capacity energy storage materials due to their potential for multi-electron redox processes, yet the mechanism of reduction and practical limits are currently unknown. Herein, we explore the mechanism of multi-electron redox processes that allow the highly reduced POM clusters of the form {MO3}y to absorb y electrons in aqueous solution, focusing mechanistically on the Wells–Dawson structure X6[P2W18O62], which comprises 18 metal centers and can uptake up to 18 electrons reversibly (y = 18) per cluster in aqueous solution when the countercations are lithium. This unconventional redox activity is rationalized by density functional theory, molecular dynamics simulations, UV–vis, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering spectra. These data point to a new phenomenon showing that cluster protonation and aggregation allow the formation of highly electron-rich meta-stable systems in aqueous solution, which produce H2 when the solution is diluted. Finally, we show that this understanding is transferrable to other salts of [P5W30O110]15– and [P8W48O184]40– anions, which can be charged to 23 and 27 electrons per cluster, respectively.

Native chemical ligation (NCL) combined with desulfurization chemistry has revolutionized the way in which large polypeptides and proteins are accessed by chemical synthesis. Herein, we outline the use of flow chemistry for the ligation-based assembly of polypeptides. We also describe the development of a novel photodesulfurization transformation that, when coupled with flow NCL, enables efficient access to native polypeptides on time scales up to 2 orders of magnitude faster than current batch NCL–desulfurization methods. The power of the new ligation–photodesulfurization flow platform is showcased through the rapid synthesis of the 36 residue clinically approved HIV entry inhibitor enfuvirtide and the peptide diagnostic agent somatorelin. Most studied two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit isotropic behavior due to high lattice symmetry; however, lower-symmetry 2D materials such as phosphorene and other elemental 2D materials exhibit very interesting anisotropic properties. In this work, we report the atomic structure, electronic properties, and vibrational modes of few-layered PdSe2 exfoliated from bulk crystals, a pentagonal 2D layered noble transition metal dichalcogenide with a puckered morphology that is air-stable. Micro-absorption optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations reveal a wide band gap variation in this material from 0 (bulk) to 1.3 eV (monolayer). The Raman-active vibrational modes of PdSe2 were identified using polarized Raman spectroscopy, and a strong interlayer interaction was revealed from large, thickness-dependent Raman peak shifts, agreeing with first-principles Raman simulations. From the reactions between Mo2(TiPB)4, where TiPB is 2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoate, and 2 equiv of the acids 4-formylbenzoic acid, HBzald; 4-(3-oxo-3-phenylpropanoyl)benzoic acid, HAvo; and 4-(2,2-difluoro-6-phenyl-2H-1λ3,3,2λ4-dioxaborinin-4-yl)benzoic acid, HAvoBF2, the compounds Mo2(TiPB)2(Bzald)2, I; Mo2(TiPB)2(Avo)2, II; and Mo2(TiPB)2(AvoBF2)2, III, have been isolated. Compounds I and II are red, and compound III is blue. The new compounds have been characterized by 1H NMR, MALDI-TOF MS, steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopies, and femtosecond and nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption and infrared spectroscopies. The outer membrane protein G (OmpG) is a monomeric 33 kDa 14-stranded β-barrel membrane protein functioning as a nonspecific porin for the uptake of oligosaccharides in Escherichia coli. Two different crystal structures of OmpG obtained at different values of pH suggest a pH-gated pore opening mechanism. In these structures, extracellular loop 6 extends away from the barrel wall at neutral pH but is folded back into the pore lumen at low pH, blocking transport through the pore. Loop 6 was invisible in a previously published solution NMR structure of OmpG in n-dodecylphosphocholine micelles, presumably due to conformational exchange on an intermediate NMR time scale. Here we present an NMR paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE)-based approach to visualize the conformational dynamics of loop 6 and to calculate conformational ensembles that explain the pH-gated opening and closing of the OmpG channel. The different loop conformers detected by the PRE ensemble calculations were validated by disulfide cross-linking of strategically engineered cysteines and electrophysiological single channel recordings. The results indicate a more dynamically regulated channel opening and closing than previously thought and reveal additional membrane-associated conformational ensembles at pH 6.3 and 7.0. We anticipate this approach to be generally applicable to detect and characterize functionally important conformational ensembles of membrane proteins.

From the reaction between M2(T(i)PB)4 and 2 equiv of 5-ethynylthiophene-2-carboxylic acid (H-ThCCH) in toluene, the complexes trans-M2(T(i)PB)2(ThCCH)2, where M = Mo (I) or W (II) and T(i)PB = 2,4,6-triisopropyl benzoate, have been isolated and characterized by (1)H NMR, IR, MALDI-TOF MS, UV-vis, steady-state emission, transient absorption, and time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopies and single-crystal X-ray crystallography for I. The molecular structure of I confirms the trans-substitution pattern and the extended conjugation of the ethynylthienyl ligands via interaction with the Mo2δ orbital. The HOMO of both I and II is the M2δ orbital, and the intense color of the compounds (I is red and II is blue) is due to the M2δ-to-ThCCH (1)MLCT transition. The S1 states for I and II are (1)MLCT. The T1 state is (3)MLCT for II, but (3)MoMoδδ* for I. The TRIR spectra of the ν(C≡C) stretch in the MLCT states are consistent with the delocalization of the electron over both ThCCH ligands. Compound I is shown to be a synthon for the preparation of trans-Mo2(T(i)PB)2(ThCCPh)2 (III) and trans-Mo2(T(i)PB)2(ThCCAuPPh3)2 (IV). Both III and IV have been characterized spectroscopically and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of III indicates the extended π-conjugation of the trans-ethynyl-thienyl units extends to the added phenyl rings.

The reaction between W(2)(T(i)PB)(4), where T(i)PB = 2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoate, and 2 equiv of 4-isonicotinic acid (nicH) yields the compound W(2)(T(i)PB)(2)(nic)(2), 2, and T(i)PBH. Compound 2 is related to the previously reported molybdenum analog, Mo(2)(T(i)PB)(2)(nic)(2), 1. Compounds 1 and 2 react with 2 equiv of B(C(6)F(5))(3) in THF to form the adducts M(2)(T(i)PB)(2)(nic-B(C(6)F(5))(3))(2), 1B (M = Mo) and 2B (M = W), which have been crystallographically characterized as solvates M(2)(T(i)PB)(2)(nic-B(C(6)F(5))(3))(2)·2THF n-hexane. Compounds 1 and 2 are intensely colored due to M(2) δ to π* MLCT transitions, and upon complexation with B(C(5)F(5))(3) to give 1B and 2B, these bands shift to lower energy and gain in intensity. Each compound shows two one-electron ligand-based reductions with a ΔE(1/2) = 120 (1), 300 (1B), 440 (2), and 650 mV (2B). The larger ΔE(1/2) values for the tungsten compounds reflect the greater orbital mixing of the metal 5d-based M(2) δ and the nic π* LUMO. Reduction of solutions of 1B and 2B with (C(5)Me(5))(2)Co leads to the anions 1B(-) and 2B(-), which have been characterized spectroscopically by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and UV-vis-NIR absorption. The EPR spectra of 1B(-) and 2B(-) are consistent with ligand-based (i.e., organic) radicals. The electronic spectra contain low-energy narrow charge resonance (IVCT) bands at 3800 (1B(-)) and 4500 cm(-1) (2B(-)), consistent with fully delocalized mixed valence radical anions. The results are compared with electronic structure calculations and with the spectral features of the metal-centered delocalized mixed valence radical cations [(Bu(t)CO(2))(3)M(2)](2)-μ(2)-(O(2)C-CO(2))(+), to which they are remarkably similar, as well as with other organic-based mixed valence systems.

5,10,15,20-Tetraphenylporphyrin chromium chloride (TPPCrCl) with added [Ph3P═N═PPh3](+)Cl(-) (PPN(+)Cl(-)) selectively polymerizes lactide (L and rac) dissolved in neat propylene oxide (PO) to yield polylactide (PLA) terminated by the -OCHMeCH2Cl group. At 0 °C and below, rac-LA yields polymers highly enriched in isotactic tetrads (iii). At 25 °C, some stereoselectivity is lost as transesterification becomes significant, and at 60 °C and above, enchainment of PO leads to the formation of 3,6-dimethyl-1,4-dioxan-2-one by a backbiting mechanism. At 0 °C, after the enchainment of L-(S,S)-LA in neat (R)-(+)-PO, the formation of (3S,6R)-3,6-dimethyl-1,4-dioxan-2-one occurs, while at higher temperatures the ratio of (3S,6R)-3,6-dimethyl-1,4-dioxan-2-one to (3R,6R)-3,6-dimethyl-1,4-dioxan-2-one falls to 3:2.

Toluene solutions of M2(O2C(t)Bu)4 (M = Mo, W; 2 equiv) react with a range of functionalized terephthalic acids, HO2CArCO2H (Ar = C6H4, C6F4, C6Cl4, C6H2-2,5-Cl2, C6H2-2,5-(OH)2, C6H3-2-F), to give [(tBuCO2)3M2]2[mu-O2CArCO2]. These compounds show intense ML(bridge)CT absorptions in the visible region of the electronic spectrum, and the terephthalate bridge serves to electronically couple the two M2 units via interactions between the M2 delta and bridge pi orbitals. Electronic structure calculations reveal how the degree of electronic coupling is controlled by the dihedral angles between the terephthalate C6 ring and the two CO2 units and the degree of interaction between the M4 delta MOs and the LUMO of the bridge. Both of these factors are controlled by the aryl substituents, and collectively these determine the thermochromism displayed by these complexes in solution together with the physical properties of the oxidized radical cations as determined by electrochemical studies (CV, DPV), UV-vis-NIR and EPR spectroscopic methods.
