Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a technologically important method to grow thin films with high conformality and excellent thickness control from vapor phase precursors. The development of new thermal ALD processes can be limited by precursor reactivity and stability: reaction temperature and precursor design are among the few variables available to achieve higher reactivity in gas-phase reactions, unlike in solution synthesis, where the use of solvent and/or a catalyst can promote a desired reaction. To bridge this synthesis gap between vapor-phase and solution-phase, we demonstrate the use of an ultrathin coating layer of a vapor phase-compatible solvent─an ionic liquid (IL)─on our growth substrate to perform ALD of SnO. Successful SnO deposition is achieved using tin acetylacetonate and water, a process that otherwise would require a stronger counter-reactant such as ozone. The presence of the layer of IL allows a solvent-mediated reaction mechanism to take place on the growth substrate surface. We report a growth per cycle of 0.67 Å/cycle at a deposition temperature of 100 °C in an IL comprising 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate. $\gamma$-Graphyne is the most symmetric sp2/sp1 allotrope of carbon, which can be viewed as graphene uniformly expanded through insertion of two-carbon acetylenic units between all the aromatic rings. To date, synthesis of bulk $\gamma$-graphyne has remained a challenge. We here report the synthesis of multilayer $\gamma$-graphyne through crystallization-assisted irreversible cross-coupling polymerization. Comprehensive characterization of this new carbon phase is described, including synchrotron X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, lateral force microscopy, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Experiments indicate that $\gamma$-graphyne is a 0.48 eV bandgap semiconductor, with a hexagonal a-axis spacing of 6.88 {\AA} and an interlayer spacing of 3.48 {\AA}, which is consistent with theoretical predictions. The observed crystal structure has an aperiodic sheet stacking. The material is thermally stable up to 240 $^\circ$C but undergoes a transformation at higher temperatures. While conventional 2D polymerizations and reticular chemistry rely on error correction through reversibility, we demonstrate that a periodic covalent lattice can be synthesized under purely kinetic control. A new organocatalyst for the ring-opening polymerization of lactones has been identified. Under the tested conditions, the anions of 2,2'-bisindole promote fast, living polymerizations (as short as 10 ms) which are selective for chain elongation over transesterification (Đ ≤ 1.1). While structurally related to (thio)urea anion catalysts, anions of 2,2'-bisindole activate the monomer via the counterion rather than through hydrogen bonding. This new activation motif enables modulation of the polymerization rate by 2 orders of magnitude by changing the counterion.

Surface layer proteins perform multiple functions in prokaryotic cells, including cellular defense, cell-shape maintenance, and regulation of import and export of materials. However, mimicking the complex and dynamic behavior of such two-dimensional biochemical systems is challenging, and hence research has so far focused mainly on the design and manipulation of the structure and functionality of protein assemblies in solution. Motivated by the new opportunities that dynamic surface layer proteins may offer for modern technology, we herein demonstrate that immobilization of coiled coil proteins onto an inorganic surface facilitates complex behavior, manifested by reversible chemical reactions that can be rapidly monitored as digital surface readouts. Using multiple chemical triggers as inputs and several surface characteristics as outputs, we can realize reversible switching and logic gate operations that are read in parallel. Moreover, using the same coiled coil protein monolayers for derivatization of nanopores drilled into silicon nitride membranes facilitates control over ion and mass transport through the pores, thereby expanding the applicability of the dynamic coiled coil system for contemporary stochastic biosensing applications.

Crucial steps toward designing water sorption materials and fine-tuning their properties for specific applications include precise identification of adsorption sites and establishment of rigorous molecular-level insight into the water adsorption process. We report stepwise crystallographic mapping and density functional theory computations of adsorbed water molecules in ALP-MOF-1, a metal-organic framework decorated with distinct open metal sites and carbonyl functional groups that serve as water anchoring sites for seeding the nucleation of a complex water network. Identification of an unusual water adsorption step in ALP-MOF-1 motivated the tuning of metal ion composition to adjust water uptake. These studies provide direct evidence that the identity of the open metal sites in MOFs can dramatically affect water adsorption behavior between 0 and ∼20% RH and that multiple proximal water anchoring sites along the MOF skeleton facilitate water uptake which could be potentially useful for applications requiring rapid and energetically facile water sorption.

Atom-by-atom manipulation on metal nanoclusters (NCs) has long been desired, as the resulting series of NCs can provide insightful understanding of how a single atom affects the structure and properties as well as the evolution with size. Here, we report crystallizations of Au22(SAdm)16 and Au22Cd1(SAdm)16 (SAdm = adamantanethiolate) which link up with Au21(SAdm)15 and Au24(SAdm)16 NCs and form an atom-by-atom evolving series protected by the same ligand. Structurally, Au22(SAdm)16 has an Au3(SAdm)4 surface motif which is longer than the Au2(SAdm)3 on Au21(SAdm)15, whereas Au22Cd1(SAdm)16 lacks one staple Au atom compared to Au24(SAdm)16 and thus the surface structure is reconstructed. A single Cd atom triggers the structural transition from Au22 with a 10-atom bioctahedral kernel to Au22Cd1 with a 13-atom cuboctahedral kernel, and correspondingly, the optical properties are dramatically changed. The photoexcited carrier lifetime demonstrates that the optical properties and excited state relaxation are highly sensitive at the single atom level. By contrast, little change in both ionization potential and electron affinity is found in this series of NCs by theoretical calculations, indicating the electronic properties are independent of adding a single atom in this series. The work provides a paradigm that the NCs with continuous metal atom numbers are accessible and crystallizable when meticulously designed, and the optical properties are more affected at the single atom level than the electronic properties.

When subjected to arylboranes, anionic trifluoromethyl and difluorobenzyl palladium(II) complexes undergo fluoride abstraction followed by 1,1-migratory insertion. The resulting intermediate fluoroalkyl species can be induced to undergo a subsequent transmetalation and reductive elimination from either an in situ formed fluoroboronate (FB(Ar3)-) or an exogenous boronic acid/ester (ArB(OR)2) and nucleophilic activator, representing a net defluorinative arylation reaction. The latter method enabled a structurally diverse substrate scope to be prepared from either an isolated palladium-CF3 complex, or from Pd(PPh3)4 and other commercially available reagents.

Expanded helicenes are large, structurally flexible π-frameworks that can be viewed as building blocks for more complex chiral nanocarbons. Here we report a gram-scale synthesis of an alkyne-functionalized expanded [11]helicene and its single-step transformation into two structurally and functionally distinct types of macrocyclic derivatives: (1) a figure-eight dimer via alkyne metathesis (also gram scale) and (2) two arylene-bridged expanded helicenes via Zr-mediated, formal [2+2+n] cycloadditions. We present the development of ligands featuring the unconventional hydrogen bond donor, -CF2H, within a metal's secondary coordination sphere. When metalated with palladium, o-CF2H-functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline provides highly directed H-bonding interactions with Pd-coordinated substrates. Spectroscopic and computational analyses with a series of X-type ligand acceptors (-F, -Cl, -Br, -OR) establish the H-bonding interaction strength for the -CF2H group (∼3 kcal/mol). The synthesis of Pd0/Ni0 complexes and subsequent coupling (Ni) highlight the unique reductive and base compatibility of the -CF2H hydrogen bond donor group.

We report the synthesis of a new perylene-diimide-based helical nanoribbon, which exhibits the largest molar electronic circular dichroism in the visible range of any molecule. This nanoribbon also displays a substantial increase in molar circular dichroism relative to a smaller helical analogue, even though they share a similar structure: both nanoribbons incorporate two conformationally dynamic double-[4]helicene termini and a rigid [6]helicene-based core within their helical superstructures. Using DFT and TDDFT calculations, we find that the double-[4]helicenes within both nanoribbons orient similarly in solution; as such, conformational differences do not account for the disparities in circular dichroism. Instead, our results implicate the configuration of the double-[6]helicene within the larger nanoribbon as the source of the observed chiroptical amplification.

Proteolysis Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs), heterobifunctional compounds that consist of protein-targeting ligands linked to an E3 ligase recruiter, have arisen as a powerful therapeutic modality for targeted protein degradation (TPD). Despite the popularity of TPD approaches in drug discovery, only a small number of E3 ligase recruiters are available for the >600 E3 ligases that exist in human cells. Here, we have discovered a cysteine-reactive covalent ligand, EN106, that targets FEM1B, an E3 ligase recently discovered as the critical component of the cellular response to reductive stress. By targeting C186 in FEM1B, EN106 disrupts recognition of the key reductive stress substrate of FEM1B, FNIP1. We further establish that EN106 can be used as a covalent recruiter for FEM1B in TPD applications by demonstrating that a PROTAC linking EN106 to the BET Bromodomain inhibitor JQ1 or the kinase inhibitor dasatinib leads to the degradation of BRD4 and BCR-ABL, respectively. Our study showcases a covalent ligand that targets a natural E3 ligase-substrate binding site and highlights the utility of covalent ligand screening in expanding the arsenal of E3 ligase recruiters suitable for TPD applications.

Lattice defects play an important role in determining the optical and electrical properties of monolayer semiconductors such as MoS2. Although the structures of various defects in monolayer MoS2 are well studied, little is known about the nature of the fluorescent defect species and their interaction with molecular adsorbates. In this study, the quenching of the low-temperature defect photoluminescence (PL) in MoS2 is investigated following the deposition of metallophthalocyanines (MPcs). The quenching is found to significantly depend on the identity of the phthalocyanine metal, with the quenching efficiency decreasing in the order CoPc > CuPc > ZnPc, and almost no quenching by metal-free H2Pc is observed. Time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) measurements corroborate the observed trend, indicating a decrease in the defect PL lifetime upon MPc adsorption, and the gate voltage-dependent PL reveals the suppression of the defect emission even at large Fermi level shifts. Density functional theory modeling argues that the MPc complexes stabilize dark negatively charged defects over luminescent neutral defects through an electrostatic local gating effect. These results demonstrate the control of defect-based excited-state decay pathways via molecular electronic structure tuning, which has broad implications for the design of mixed-dimensional optoelectronic devices.

Gossypol (Gsp), a natural toxin concentrated in cottonseeds, poses great risks to the safe consumption of cottonseed products, which are used extensively throughout the food industry. In this work, we report the first luminescence "turn-on" sensors for Gsp using near-infrared emitting lanthanide (Ln3+) materials, including Ln3+ MOFs and Ln3+ salts. We first demonstrate that the Yb3+ photoluminescence of a Yb3+ MOF, Yb-NH2-TPDC, can be employed to selectively detect Gsp with a limit of detection of 25 μg/mL via a "turn-on" response from a completely nonemissive state in the absence of Gsp. The recyclability and stability of Yb-NH2-TPDC in the presence of Gsp was demonstrated by fluorescence spectroscopy and PXRD analysis, respectively. A variety of background substances present in practical samples that would require Gsp sensing, such as refined cottonseed oil, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, and α-tocopherol, did not interfere with the Yb3+ photoluminescence signal. We further identified that the "turn-on" of Yb-NH2-TPDC photoluminescence was due to the "antenna effect" of Gsp, as evidenced by spectroscopic studies and supported by computational analysis. This is the first report that Gsp can effectively sensitize Yb3+ photoluminescence. Leveraging this sensing mechanism, we demonstrate facile, highly sensitive, fast-response detection of Gsp using YbCl3·6H2O and NdCl3·6H2O solutions. Overall, we show for the first time that Ln3+-based materials are promising luminescent sensors for Gsp detection. We envision that the reported sensing approach will be applicable to the detection of a wide variety of aromatic molecules using Ln3+ compounds including MOFs, complexes, and salts.

Strategies to improve stretchability of polymer semiconductors, such as introducing flexible conjugation-breakers or adding flexible blocks, usually result in degraded electrical properties. In this work, we propose a concept to address this limitation, by introducing conjugated rigid fused-rings with optimized bulky side groups and maintaining a conjugated polymer backbone. Specifically, we investigated two classes of rigid fused-ring systems, namely, benzene-substituted dibenzothiopheno[6,5-b:6',5'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (Ph-DBTTT) and indacenodithiophene (IDT) systems, and identified molecules displaying optimized electrical and mechanical properties. In the IDT system, the polymer PIDT-3T-OC12-10% showed promising electrical and mechanical properties. In fully stretchable transistors, the polymer PIDT-3T-OC12-10% showed a mobility of 0.27 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 75% strain and maintained its mobility after being subjected to hundreds of stretching-releasing cycles at 25% strain. Our results underscore the intimate correlation between chemical structures, mechanical properties, and charge carrier mobility for polymer semiconductors. Our described molecular design approach will help to expedite the next generation of intrinsically stretchable high-performance polymer semiconductors.
