The purpose of this research is to determine whether the acoustic properties of polydisperse fibrous medium (PDFM) and bidisperse fibrous medium (BDFM) can be modeled by monodisperse fiber media (MDFM) with an effective fiber diameter. Multi-scale numerical simulations on representative elementary volumes of these media are performed to retrieve the transport and geometrical properties governing their acoustic properties. Results show no significant difference between predictions obtained by PDFM or BDFM, and their corresponding effective MDFM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A numerical modeling method for accurately predicting the acoustophoretic motion of compressible microparticles in microfluidic devices is presented to consider the effects of fluid medium flow and spatial temperature variation that can significantly influence the acoustophoretic motion. In the proposed method, zeroth-order fluid medium flow and temperature, and first- and second-order acoustic fields in the microfluidic devices are first calculated by applying quadratic mapping functions and a second-order finite difference method (FDM) to perturbed mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations and state equation. Then, the acoustic radiation force is obtained based on the Gorkov's acoustic radiation force equation and applied to the Newton's Equation of Motion to calculate the microparticle motion. The proposed method was validated by comparing its results to a commercial software package, COMSOL Multiphysics results, one-dimensional, analytical modeling results, and experimental results. It is shown that the fluid medium flow affects the acoustic radiation force and streaming significantly, resulting in the acoustic radiation force and streaming prediction errors of 10.9% and 67.4%, respectively, when the fluid medium flow speed is increased from 0 to 1m/s. A local temperature elevation from 20 °C to 22°C also results in the prediction errors of 88.4% and 73.4%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The temporal occurrence of deep diving cetaceans in the Josephine Seamount High Seas Marine Protected Area (JSHSMPA), south-west Portugal, was monitored using a passive acoustic recorder. The recorder was deployed on 13 May 2010 at a depth of 814 m during the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation cruise "Sirena10" and recovered on 6 June 2010. The recorder was programmed to record 40 s of data every 2min. Acoustic data analysis, for the detection and classification of echolocation clicks, was performed using automatic detector/classification systems: M3R (Marine Mammal Monitoring on Navy Ranges), a custom MATLAB program, and an operator-supervised custom MATLAB program to assess the classification performance of the detector/classification systems. M3R CS-SVM algorithm contains templates to detect beaked whales, sperm whales, blackfish (pilot and false killer whales), and Risso's dolphins. The detections of each group of odontocetes was monitored as a function of time. Blackfish and Risso's dolphins were detected every day, while beaked whales and sperm whales were detected almost every day. The hourly distribution of detections reveals that blackfish and Risso's dolphins were more active at night, while beaked whales and sperm whales were more active during daylight hours. A method of active acoustic resonance interference spectroscopy is introduced for estimation of bubble properties. A modified form of Rayleigh-Plesset equation for forced oscillation of either a single free bubble or elastic shell encapsulated microbubble with attached solids loading is solved by the regular perturbation method for steady oscillatory solutions as a result of small amplitude acoustic excitation by a point sinusoidal oscillator. A model for the total pressure field at an acoustic receiver in an incompressible liquid is then solved by the regular perturbation method. Closed-form analytical solutions are found for pressure power at the acoustic receiver as a function of the excitation frequency and strength; the properties of the bubble, liquid, and encapsulating shell; and the geometry of the active monitoring system. The receiver pressure power exhibits a maximum due to bubble resonance and a minimum due to destructive interference between source and bubble response pressure fields at higher excitation frequencies. The inverse problem is solved to derive unique closed-form analytical estimators for bubble equilibrium size, attached solids mass loading, and encapsulating layer dilatational viscosity as a function of the frequencies of the fundamental resonance maximum, interference minimum, second harmonic maximum total average acoustic power, monitoring system, and phase properties. This paper compares different approaches to model the vibroacoustic behavior of earmuffs at low frequency and investigates their accuracy by comparison with objective insertion loss measurements recently carried out by Boyer et al. [(2014). Appl. Acoust. 83, 76-85]. Two models based on the finite element (FE) method where the cushion is either modeled as a spring foundation (SF) or as an equivalent solid (ES), and the well-known lumped parameters model (LPM) are investigated. Modeling results show that: (i) all modeling strategies are in good agreement with measurements, providing that the characterization of the cushion equivalent mechanical properties are performed with great care and as close as possible to in situ loading, boundary, and environmental conditions and that the frequency dependence of the mechanical properties is taken into account, (ii) the LPM is the most simple modeling strategy, but the air volume enclosed by the earmuff must be correctly estimated, which is not as straightforward as it may seem, (iii) similar results are obtained with the SF and the ES FE-models of the cushion, but the SF should be preferred to predict the earmuff acoustic response at low frequency since it requires less parameters and a less complex characterization procedure. The Λ - Φ diagram was a tool introduced in the late 1970s to predict ocean acoustic fluctuation regimes termed unsaturated, partially saturated, and fully saturated, where internal wave sound speed fluctuations play a dominant role. The Λ - Φ parameters reflect, respectively, the strength of diffraction and the root-mean-square phase fluctuation along a ray path. Oceanographic knowledge of the small scale part of the internal wave spectrum and high angle Fresnel zone formulations now allow a more stable and accurate calculation of these parameters. An empirical relation between the variance of log-intensity and Λ - Φ provides a more accurate border between the unsaturated regime and stronger fluctuations. The diagram is consistent with six short range, deep water experiments in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans with frequencies ranging from 75 to 16 000 Hz. The utility of the Λ - Φ diagram is that it provides one of the few means to inter-compare experiments at different geographic locations, and at different frequencies and ranges. This paper proposes a method of creating acoustic contrast control in an arc-shaped area using a linear loudspeaker array. The boundary of the arc-shaped area is treated as the envelope of the tangent lines that can be formed by manipulating the phase profile of the loudspeakers in the array. When compared with the existing acoustic contrast control method, the proposed method is able to generate sound field inside an arc-shaped area and achieve a trade-off between acoustic uniformity and acoustic contrast. This paper describes a methodology and case study for the implementation of educational virtual laboratories for practice training on acoustic tests according to international standards. The objectives of this activity are (a) to help the students understand and apply the procedures described in the standards and (b) to familiarize the students with the uncertainty in measurement and its estimation in acoustics. The virtual laboratory will not focus on the handling and set-up of real acoustic equipment but rather on procedures and uncertainty. The case study focuses on the application of the virtual laboratory for facade sound insulation tests according to ISO 140-5:1998 (International Organization for Standardization, Geneva, Switzerland, 1998), and the paper describes the causal and stochastic models and the constraints applied in the virtual environment under consideration. With a simple user interface, the laboratory will provide measurement data that the students will have to process to report the insulation results that must converge with the "virtual true values" in the laboratory. The main advantage of the virtual laboratory is derived from the customization of factors in which the student will be instructed or examined (for instance, background noise correction, the detection of sporadic corrupted observations, and the effect of instrument precision). Listeners' ability to discriminate unfamiliar voices is often susceptible to the effects of manipulations of acoustic characteristics of the utterances. This vulnerability was quantified within a task in which participants determined if two utterances were spoken by the same or different speakers. Results of this task were analyzed in relation to a set of historical and novel parameters in order to hypothesize the role of those parameters in the decision process. Listener performance was first measured in a baseline task with unmodified stimuli, and then compared to responses with resynthesized stimuli under three conditions: (1) normalized mean-pitch; (2) normalized duration; and (3) normalized linear predictive coefficients (LPCs). The results of these experiments suggest that perceptual speaker discrimination is robust to acoustic changes, though mean-pitch and LPC modifications are more detrimental to a listener's ability to successfully identify same or different speaker pairings. Short-time spectral changes in the speech signal are important for understanding noise-vocoded sentences. These information-bearing acoustic changes, measured using cochlea-scaled entropy in cochlear implant simulations [CSECI ; Stilp et al. (2013). J. Acoust. Soc. Am.133(2), EL136-EL141; Stilp (2014). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 135(3), 1518-1529], may offer better understanding of speech perception by cochlear implant (CI) users. However, perceptual importance of CSECI for normal-hearing listeners was tested at only one spectral resolution and one temporal resolution, limiting generalizability of results to CI users. Here, experiments investigated the importance of these informational changes for understanding noise-vocoded sentences at different spectral resolutions (4-24 spectral channels; Experiment 1), temporal resolutions (4-64 Hz cutoff for low-pass filters that extracted amplitude envelopes; Experiment 2), or when both parameters varied (6-12 channels, 8-32 Hz; Experiment 3). Sentence intelligibility was reduced more by replacing high-CSECI intervals with noise than replacing low-CSECI intervals, but only when sentences had sufficient spectral and/or temporal resolution. High-CSECI intervals were more important for speech understanding as spectral resolution worsened and temporal resolution improved. Trade-offs between CSECI and intermediate spectral and temporal resolutions were minimal. These results suggest that signal processing strategies that emphasize information-bearing acoustic changes in speech may improve speech perception for CI users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research on the perception, recognition, and learning of sounds and words has identified diverse effects of phonetic variation. The present study examined how variation affects cross-language production of consonant clusters. American English speakers shadowed words beginning with nonnative clusters in low- and high-variability conditions. Shadowing responses in the low-variability condition were quite sensitive to fine-grained phonetic properties that were manipulated across the stimuli. Notably, longer stop bursts led to increased rates of epenthesis, lower burst amplitudes resulted in more feature change and deletion, and intense periods of voicing at cluster onset elicited prothetic responses. Sensitivity to the acoustic manipulations was substantially attenuated in the high-variability condition, which combined stimuli from the first condition with baseline productions of the same items from two additional talkers. Detailed analyses of the response patterns indicate that more stable production targets in the high-variability condition resulted from integration, or blending, of the multiple talker stimuli. Implications of these findings for language-specific speech processing and the role of phonetic variability in second language acquisition are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work deals with the duration of voicing and silence periods of continuous speech in rooms with very different reverberation times (RTs). Measurements were conducted using the Ambulatory Phonation Monitoring (APM) 3200 (Kaypentax, Montvale, NJ) and Voice-Care devices (developed at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy), both of which have a contact microphone placed on the base of the neck to detect skin vibrations during phonation. Six university professors and 22 university students made short laboratory monologs in which they explained something that they knew well to a listener 6m away. Seven students also described a map with the intention of correctly explaining directions to a listener who drew the path on a blank chart. Longer speech samples were made by 25 primary school teachers in classrooms. A tendency to increase the voicing periods as the RT increased was on average observed for the university professors, the school teachers, and the university students who described a map. These students also showed longer silence periods than the students who made short monologs. The recognized trends concerned voice professionals or subjects who were highly motivated to make themselves understood in a perturbed speaking situation. Nonparametric statistical tests, which were applied to detect the differences in distributions of voicing and silence periods, have basically supported the findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acoustic-gravity waves in the middle and upper atmosphere and long-range propagation of infrasound are strongly affected by air viscosity and thermal conductivity. To characterize the wave dissipation, it is typical to consider idealized environments, which admit plane-wave solutions. Here, an asymptotic approach is developed that relies instead on the assumption that spatial variations of environmental parameters are gradual. It is found that realistic assumptions about the atmosphere lead to rather different predictions for wave damping than do the plane-wave solutions. In this paper, the contribution of visual and acoustic preference to multi-sensory landscape evaluation was quantitatively compared. The real landscapes were treated as dual-sensory ambiance and separated into visual landscape and soundscape. Both were evaluated by 63 respondents in laboratory conditions. The analysis of the relationship between respondent's visual and acoustic preference as well as their respective contribution to landscape preference showed that (1) some common attributes are universally identified in assessing visual, aural and audio-visual preference, such as naturalness or degree of human disturbance; (2) with acoustic and visual preferences as variables, a multi-variate linear regression model can satisfactorily predict landscape preference (R ²=0.740), while the coefficients of determination for a unitary linear regression model were 0.345 and 0.720 for visual and acoustic preference as predicting factors, respectively; (3) acoustic preference played a much more important role in landscape evaluation than visual preference in this study (the former is about 4.5 times of the latter), which strongly suggests a rethinking of the role of soundscape in environment perception research and landscape planning practice. The problem of delivering personal audio content to listeners sharing the same acoustic space has recently attracted attention. It has been shown that a perceptually acceptable level of acoustic separation between the listening zones is difficult to achieve with active control in non-anechoic conditions. A common problem of strong first order reflections has not been examined in detail for systems with practical constraints. Acoustic contrast maximization combined with optimization of source positions is identified as a potentially effective control strategy when strong individual reflections occur. An analytic study is carried out to describe the relationship between the performance of a 2 x 2 (two sources and two control sensors) system and its geometry in a single-reflection scenario. The expression for acoustic contrast is used to formulate guidelines for optimizing source positions, based on three distinct techniques: Null-Split, Far-Align, and Near-Align. The applicability of the techniques to larger systems with up to two reflections is demonstrated using numerical optimization. Simulation results show that optimized systems produce higher acoustic contrast than non-optimized source arrangements and an alternative method for reducing the impact of reflections (sound power minimization). By considering the elastic membrane's dissipation, the membrane-type acoustic metamaterial (MAM) has been demonstrated to be a super absorber for low-frequency sound. In the paper, a theoretical vibroacoustic plate model is developed to reveal the sound energy absorption mechanism within the MAM under a plane normal incidence. Based on the plate model in conjunction with the point matching method, the in-plane strain energy of the membrane due to the resonant and antiresonant motion of the attached masses can be accurately captured by solving the coupled vibroacoustic integrodifferential equation. The sound absorption ability of the MAM is quantitatively determined, which is also in good agreement with the prediction from the finite element method. In particular, microstructure effects including eccentricity of the attached masses, the depth, thickness, and loss factor of the membrane on sound absorption peak values are discussed. Range-dependence of time-varying acoustic channels caused by a traveling surface wave is investigated through water tank experiments and acoustic propagation analysis schemes. As the surface wave travels, surface reflected signals fluctuate and the fluctuation varies with source-receiver horizontal range. Amplitude fluctuations of surface reflected signals increase with increasing horizontal range whereas the opposite occurs in delay fluctuations. The scattered pressure field at a fixed time shows strong dependence on the receiver position because of caustics and shadow zones formed by the surface. The Doppler shifts of surface reflected signals also depend on the horizontal range. Comparison between measurement data and model results indicates the Doppler shift relies on the delay fluctuation under current experimental conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At high frequencies, interaural time differences (ITDs) are conveyed by the sound envelope. Sensitivity to envelope ITDs depends crucially on the envelope shape. Reverberation degrades the envelope shape, reducing the modulation depth of the envelope and the slope of its flanks. Reverberation also reduces the envelope interaural coherence (i.e., the similarity of the envelopes at two ears). The current study investigates the extent to which these changes affect sensitivity to envelope ITDs. The first experiment measured ITD discrimination thresholds at low and high frequencies in a simulated room. The stimulus was either a low-frequency narrowband noise or the same noise transposed to a higher frequency. The results suggest that the effect of reverberation on ITD thresholds was multiplicative. Given that the threshold without reverberation was larger for the transposed than for the low-frequency stimulus, this meant that, in absolute terms, the thresholds for the transposed stimulus showed a much greater increase due to reverberation than those for the low-frequency stimulus. Three further experiments indicated that the effect of reverberation on the envelope ITD thresholds was due to the combined effect of the reduction in the envelope modulation depth and slopes, as well as the decrease in the envelope interaural coherence. This study sought to investigate the influence of temporal incoherence and inharmonicity on concurrent stream segregation, using performance-based measures. Subjects discriminated frequency shifts in a temporally regular sequence of target pure tones, embedded in a constant or randomly varying multi-tone background. Depending on the condition tested, the target tones were either temporally coherent or incoherent with, and either harmonically or inharmonically related to, the background tones. The results provide further evidence that temporal incoherence facilitates stream segregation and they suggest that deviations from harmonicity can cause similar facilitation effects, even when the targets and the maskers are temporally coherent. A coupled system consisting of an acoustic cavity and an elastic panel is a classical problem in structural acoustics and is typically analyzed using modal approaches based on in vacuo structural modes and the rigidly walled acoustic modes which are pre-determined based on separate component models. Such modeling techniques, however, tend to suffer the following drawbacks or limitations: (a) a panel is only subjected to ideal boundary conditions such as the simply supported, (b) the coupling between the cavity and panel is considered weak, and (c) the particle velocity cannot be correctly predicted from the pressure gradient on the contacting interface, to name a few. Motivated by removing these restrictions, this paper presents a general method for the vibro-acoustic analysis of a three-dimensional (3D) acoustic cavity bounded by a flexible panel with general elastically restrained boundary conditions. The displacement of the plate and the sound pressure in the cavity are constructed in the forms of standard two-dimensional and 3D Fourier cosine series supplemented by several terms introduced to ensure and accelerate the convergence of the series expansions. The unknown expansions coefficients are treated as the generalized coordinates and determined using the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure based on the energy expressions for the coupled structural acoustic system. The accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated through numerical examples and comparisons with the results available in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic time reversal (STR) is a technique for blind deconvolution in an unknown multipath environment that relies on generic features (rays or modes) of multipath sound propagation. This paper describes how ray-based STR signal estimates may be improved and how ray-based STR sound-channel impulse-response estimates may be exploited for approximate source localization in underwater environments. Findings are based on simulations and underwater experiments involving source-array ranges from 100 m to 1 km in 60 -m-deep water and chirp signals with a bandwidth of 1.5-4.0 kHz. Signal estimation performance is quantified by the correlation coefficient between the source-broadcast and the STR-estimated signals for a variable number N of array elements, 2 ≤ N ≤ 32, and a range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), -5 dB ≤ SNR ≤ 30 dB. At high SNR, STR-estimated signals are found to have cross-correlation coefficients of ∼90% with as few as four array elements, and similar performance may be achieved at a SNR of nearly 0 dB with 32 array elements. When the broadband STR-estimated impulse response is used for source localization via a simple ray-based backpropagation scheme, the results are less ambiguous than those obtained from conventional broadband matched field processing. North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) produce a loud, broadband signal referred to as the gunshot sound. These distinctive sounds may be suitable for passive acoustic monitoring and detection of right whales; however, little is known about the prevalence of these sounds in important right whale habitats, such as the Bay of Fundy. This study investigates the timing and distribution of gunshot sound production on the summer feeding grounds using an array of five marine acoustic recording units deployed in the Bay of Fundy, Canada in mid-summer 2004 and 2005. Gunshot sounds were common, detected on 37 of 38 recording days. Stereotyped gunshot bouts averaged 1.5 h, with some bouts exceeding 7 h in duration with up to seven individuals producing gunshots at any one time. Bouts were more commonly detected in the late afternoon and evening than during the morning hours. Locations of gunshots in bouts indicated that whales producing the sounds were either stationary or showed directional travel, suggesting gunshots have different communication functions depending on behavioral context. These results indicate that gunshots are a common right whale sound produced during the summer months and are an important component in the acoustic communication system of this endangered species. The reconstruction of acoustical sources from discrete field measurements is a difficult inverse problem that has been approached in different ways. Classical methods (beamforming, near-field acoustical holography, inverse boundary elements, wave superposition, equivalent sources, etc.) all consist-implicitly or explicitly-in interpolating the measurements onto some spatial functions whose propagation are known and in reconstructing the source field by retropropagation. This raises the fundamental question as whether, for a given source topology and array geometry, there exists an optimal interpolation basis which minimizes the reconstruction error. This paper provides a general answer to this question, by proceeding from a Bayesian formulation that is ideally suited to combining information of physical and probabilistic natures. The main findings are the followings: (1) The optimal basis functions are the M eigen-functions of a specific continuous-discrete propagation operator, with M being the number of microphones in the array. (2) The a priori inclusion of spatial information on the source field causes super-resolution according to a phenomenon coined 'Bayesian focusing.' (3) The approach is naturally endowed with an internal regularization mechanism and results in a robust regularization criterion with no more than one minimum. Daily acoustic calling rates of Eastern North Pacific (ENP) gray whales were measured on 6 days during 1 mo of their 2008 breeding season in the sheltered coastal lagoon of Laguna San Ignacio in Baja California, Mexico. Visual counts of whales determined that the numbers of single animals in the lower lagoon more than tripled over the observation period. All call types showed production peaks in the early morning and evening with minimum rates generally detected in the early afternoon. For four of the five observation days, the daily number of 'S1'-type calls increased roughly as the square of the number of the animals in the lower lagoon during both daytime and nighttime. This relationship persisted when raw call counts were adjusted for variations in background noise level, using a simple propagation law derived from empirical measurements. The one observation day that did not fit the square-law relationship occurred during a week when the group size in the lagoon increased rapidly. These results suggest that passive acoustic monitoring does not measure gray whale group size directly but monitors the number of connections in the social network, which rises as roughly M2/2 for a group size M. Judgments of whether a sinusoidal probe is higher or lower in frequency than the closest partial ('target') in a multi-partial complex are improved when the target is pulsed on and off. These experiments explored the contribution of reduction in perceptual confusion and recovery from adaptation to this effect. In experiment 1, all partials except the target were replaced by noise to reduce perceptual confusion. Performance was much better than when the background was composed of multiple partials. When the level of the target was reduced to avoid ceiling effects, no effect of pulsing the target occurred. In experiment 2, the target and background partials were irregularly and independently amplitude modulated. This gave a large effect of pulsing the target, suggesting that if recovery from adaptation contributes to the effect, amplitude fluctuations do not prevent this. In experiment 3, the background was composed of multiple steady partials, but the target was irregularly amplitude modulated. This gave better performance than when the target was unmodulated and a moderate effect of pulsing the target. It is argued that when the target and background are steady tones, pulsing the target may result both in reduction of perceptual confusion and recovery from adaptation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reliable presence detection is a requirement in energy-efficient occupancy-adaptive indoor lighting systems. A system of multiple ultrasonic sensors is considered for presence detection, and the performance gain from optimum fusion is studied. Two cases are considered wherein an individual sensor determines presence based on (i) local detection by processing echoes at its receiver, and (ii) the optimum Chair-Varshney fusion rule using multiple sensor detection results. The performance gains of using optimum fusion over local detection are characterized under different sensor system configurations and it is shown that improved detection sensitivity is obtained over a larger detection coverage region. Killer whales in the North Pacific, similar to Atlantic populations, produce high-frequency modulated signals, based on acoustic recordings from ship-based hydrophone arrays and autonomous recorders at multiple locations. The median peak frequency of these signals ranged from 19.6-36.1 kHz and median duration ranged from 50-163 ms. Source levels were 185-193 dB peak-to-peak re: 1 μPa at 1 m. These uniform, repetitive, down-swept signals are similar to bat echolocation signals and possibly could have echolocation functionality. Fidell et al. [(2011), J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 130(2), 791-806] have shown (1) that the rate of growth of annoyance with noise exposure reported in attitudinal surveys of the annoyance of aircraft noise closely resembles the exponential rate of change of loudness with sound level, and (2) that the proportion of a community highly annoyed and the variability in annoyance prevalence rates in communities are well accounted for by a simple model with a single free parameter: a community tolerance level (abbreviated CTL, and represented symbolically in mathematical expressions as Lct), expressed in units of DNL. The current study applies the same modeling approach to predicting the prevalence of annoyance of road traffic and rail noise. The prevalence of noise-induced annoyance of all forms of transportation noise is well accounted for by a simple, loudness-like exponential function with community-specific offsets. The model fits all of the road traffic findings well, but the prevalence of annoyance due to rail noise is more accurately predicted separately for interviewing sites with and without high levels of vibration and/or rattle. This paper applies Bayesian inversion to bottom-loss data derived from wind-driven ambient noise measurements from a vertical line array to quantify the information content constraining seabed geoacoustic parameters. The inversion utilizes a previously proposed ray-based representation of the ambient noise field as a forward model for fast computations of bottom loss data for a layered seabed. This model considers the effect of the array's finite aperture in the estimation of bottom loss and is extended to include the wind speed as the driving mechanism for the ambient noise field. The strength of this field relative to other unwanted noise mechanisms defines a signal-to-noise ratio, which is included in the inversion as a frequency-dependent parameter. The wind speed is found to have a strong impact on the resolution of seabed geoacoustic parameters as quantified by marginal probability distributions from Bayesian inversion of simulated data. The inversion method is also applied to experimental data collected at a moored vertical array during the MAPEX 2000 experiment, and the results are compared to those from previous active-source inversions and to core measurements at a nearby site. The time domain boundary element method (BEM) is associated with numerical instability that typically stems from the time marching scheme. In this work, a formulation of time domain BEM is derived to deal with all types of boundary conditions adopting a multi-input, multi-output, infinite impulse response structure. The fitted frequency domain impedance data are converted into a time domain expression as a form of an infinite impulse response filter, which can also invoke a modeling error. In the calculation, the response at each time step is projected onto the wave vector space of natural radiation modes, which can be obtained from the eigensolutions of the single iterative matrix. To stabilize the computation, unstable oscillatory modes are nullified, and the same decay rate is used for two nonoscillatory modes. As a test example, a transient sound field within a partially lined, parallelepiped box is used, within which a point source is excited by an octave band impulse. In comparison with the results of the inverse Fourier transform of a frequency domain BEM, the average of relative difference norm in the stabilized time response is found to be 4.4%. This study investigated whether speech-like maskers without linguistic content produce informational masking of speech. The target stimuli were nonsense Chinese Mandarin sentences. In experiment I, the masker contained harmonics the fundamental frequency (F0) of which was sinusoidally modulated and the mean F0 of which was varied. The magnitude of informational masking was evaluated by measuring the change in intelligibility (releasing effect) produced by inducing a perceived spatial separation of the target speech and masker via the precedence effect. The releasing effect was small and was only clear when the target and masker had the same mean F0, suggesting that informational masking was small. Performance with the harmonic maskers was better than with a steady speech-shaped noise (SSN) masker. In experiments II and III, the maskers were speech-like synthesized signals, alternating between segments with harmonic structure and segments composed of SSN. Performance was much worse than for experiment I, and worse than when an SSN masker was used, suggesting that substantial informational masking occurred. The similarity of the F0 contours of the target and masker had little effect. In an investigation of contextual influences on sound categorization, 64 Peruvian Spanish listeners categorized vowels on an /i/ to /e/ continuum. First, to measure the influence of the stimulus range (broad acoustic context) and the preceding stimuli (local acoustic context), listeners were presented with different subsets of the Spanish /i/-/e/ continuum in separate blocks. Second, the influence of the number of response categories was measured by presenting half of the participants with /i/ and /e/ as responses, and the other half with /i/, /e/, /a/, /o/, and /u/. The results showed that the perceptual category boundary between /i/ and /e/ shifted depending on the stimulus range and that the formant values of locally preceding items had a contrastive influence. Categorization was less susceptible to broad and local acoustic context effects, however, when listeners were presented with five rather than two response options. Vowel categorization depends not only on the acoustic properties of the target stimulus, but also on its broad and local acoustic context. This paper presents a theoretical study of a duct loaded with identical side-branch resonators. The Bloch wave theory and the transfer matrix method are used to investigate wave propagation in the duct. It is found that this duct-resonator system has a unique attenuation characteristic brought about by structural periodicity. Three types of stop-bands are discussed and their bandwidths are predicted. All of the results predicted by the theory fit well with a computer simulation using a three-dimensional finite element method. The effect known as 'weak Anderson localization,' 'coherent backscattering,' or 'enhanced back-scattering' is a physical phenomenon that occurs in random systems, e.g., disordered media and linear wave systems, including reverberation rooms: The mean square response is increased at the drive point. In a reverberation room, this means that one can expect an increase of the reverberant sound field at the position of the source that generates the sound field. This affects the sound power output of the source and is therefore of practical concern. The relative increase of reverberant energy is described by the concentration factor, which is usually assumed to be 2. However, because of the stronger direct sound field at the source position, it is obviously very difficult to measure this quantity directly under steady-state conditions. A related parameter of crucial importance for the ensemble statistics of responses in rooms is the modal kurtosis, which is usually assumed to be 3. Background noise reduces the depth of the low-frequency envelope modulations known to be important for speech intelligibility. The relative strength of the target and masker envelope modulations can be quantified using a modulation signal-to-noise ratio, (S/N)mod, measure. Such a measure can be used in noise-suppression algorithms to extract target-relevant modulations from the corrupted (target + masker) envelopes for potential improvement in speech intelligibility. In the present study, envelopes are decomposed in the modulation spectral domain into a number of channels spanning the range of 0-30 Hz. Target-dominant modulations are identified and retained in each channel based on the (S/N)mod selection criterion, while modulations which potentially interfere with perception of the target (i.e., those dominated by the masker) are discarded. The impact of modulation-selective processing on the speech-reception threshold for sentences in noise is assessed with normal-hearing listeners. Results indicate that the intelligibility of noise-masked speech can be improved by as much as 13 dB when preserving target-dominant modulations, present up to a modulation frequency of 18 Hz, while discarding masker-dominant modulations from the mixture envelopes. An adaptive controller design is proposed and simulated for parameter identification and oscillation control in microbubble systems. Lyapunov's direct method and a Lyapunov-like analysis are used to show stability and convergence of trajectory tracking and parameter adaptation. This paper presents an experimental and comparative study of several spherical microphone array eigenbeam (EB) processing techniques for localization of early reflections in room acoustic environments, which is a relevant research topic in both audio signal processing and room acoustics. This paper focuses on steered beamformer-based and subspace-based localization techniques implemented in the spherical EB domain, including the plane-wave decomposition, eigenbeam delay and sum, eigenbeam minimum variance distortionless response, eigenbeam multiple signal classification (EB-MUSIC), and eigenbeam estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (EB-ESPRIT) methods. The directions of arrival of the original sound source and the associated reflection signals in acoustic environments are estimated from acoustic maps of the rooms, which are obtained using a spherical microphone array. The EB-domain-based frequency smoothing and white noise gain control techniques are derived and employed to improve the performance and robustness of reflection localization. The bidirectional decision feedback equalizer (BiDFE) that combines the outputs of a conventional decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and backward DFE can improve the performance of the conventional DFE by up to 1-2 dB based on simulations. In this letter, the BiDFE concept is extended to multichannel time reversal communications involving a DFE as a post-processor. Experimental data collected in shallow water (10-20 kHz) show that the performance can be enhanced by 0.4-1.8 dB in terms of output signal-to-noise ratio. Passive seismology is burgeoning under the apparent theoretical support of diffuse acoustics. However, basic physical arguments suggest that this theory may not be applicable to seismic noise. A procedure is developed to establish the applicability of the diffuse field paradigm to a wavefield, based on testing the latter for azimuthal isotropy and spatial homogeneity. This procedure is then applied to the seismic noise recorded at 65 sites covering a wide variety of environmental and subsoil conditions. Considering the instantaneous oscillation vector measured at single triaxial stations, the hypothesis of azimuthal isotropy is rejected in all cases with high confidence, which makes the spatial homogeneity test unnecessary and leads directly to conclude that the seismic noise wavefield is not diffuse. Research into acoustic recognition systems for insects has focused on species identification rather than individual identification. In this paper, the feasibility of applying pattern recognition techniques to construct an acoustic system capable of automatic individual recognition for insects is investigated analytically and experimentally across two species of Orthoptera. Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients serve as the acoustic feature, and α-Gaussian mixture models were selected as the classification models. The performance of the proposed acoustic system is promising and displays high accuracy. The results suggest that the acoustic feature and classifier method developed here have potential for individual animal recognition and can be applied to other species of interest. If dispersion in a medium is weak and approximately linear with frequency (over the experimental band of frequencies), then it can be shown that the constant term in a polynomial representation of phase shift as a function of frequency can produce errors in measurements of phase-velocity differences in through-transmission, substitution experiments. A method for suppressing the effects of the constant phase shift in the context of the single-wave-model was tested on measurements from 30 cancellous human calcaneus samples in vitro. Without adjustment for constant phase shifts, the estimated phase velocity at 500 kHz was 1516±6 m/s (mean±standard error), and the estimated dispersion was -24±4 m/s MHz (mean±standard error). With adjustment for constant phase shifts, the estimated mean velocity decreased by 4–9 m/s, and the estimated magnitude of mean dispersion decreased by 50%–100%. The average correlation coefficient between the measured attenuation coefficient and frequency was 0.997±0.0026 (mean±standard deviation), suggesting that the signal for each sample was dominated by one wave. A single-wave, linearly dispersive model conformed to measured complex transfer functions from the 30 cancellous-bone samples with an average root-mean-square error of 1.9%±1.0%. This paper presents theory and experimental data on the resonance frequency of systems consisting of different-sized air bubbles attached to a rigid wall. Effects of the change in resonant frequency with bubble size and distance between the bubbles were studied. It was found that the symmetric mode resonance frequency of the bubble system decreased with increasing r=R02/R01, where R01 and R02 are the equilibrium radii of bubbles in the system. Both the symmetric and antisymmetric modes of oscillation were detected in the experiments, with the resonant frequency of the symmetric mode dominant at small bubble separation and the frequency of the antisymmetric mode dominant when the bubbles were farther apart. A linear coupled-oscillator theoretical model was used to describe the oscillations of the bubble system, in which the method of images was used to approximate the effects of the wall. The elastic response of the layered perovskite system Ca2-xSrxRuO4 (0.2≤x≤2) has been studied as a function of temperature and doping concentration x using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. The elastic constants c11 and c44 have been obtained for three polycrystalline samples (x=1.0, 0.5, and 0.3) and show a softening trend with increasing Ca-content. In addition, the temperature-dependence of the elastic response of five single-crystals (x=2.0, 1.9, 0.5, 0.3, and 0.2) has been measured. For 2.0≥x≥0.5, a dramatic softening over a wide temperature range is observed upon cooling, which is attributed to the rotational instability of RuO6 octahedra (for x=2.0 and 1.9) and the static rotation of the octahedra (for x=0.5). For the Ca-rich samples (x=0.3 and 0.2), the softening occurs in a very narrow temperature range, corresponding to the structural phase transition from high-temperature tetragonal to low-temperature orthorhombic symmetry. Experiments were performed to measure the dynamical response of individual SonoVue® microbubbles subjected to pulsed ultrasound. Three commonly used bubble dynamic models (i.e., Hoff’s, Sarkar’s, and linearized Marmottant’s models) were compared to determine the most appropriate model for fitting to the experimental data. The models were evaluated against published optical microscopy data. The comparison suggests that it is difficult to rank these models for lipid-shelled microbubbles undergoing small-amplitude oscillations, because under these conditions the shell parameters in these models are closely related. A linearized version of the Marmottant model was used to estimate the shell parameters (i.e., shear modulus and shear viscosity) of SonoVue® microbubbles from the experimental light scattering data, as a function of ambient microbubble radius. The SonoVue® microbubble shell elasticity and dilatational viscosity increase with ambient bubble radius, in agreement with previously published data. The results suggest that light scattering, used in conjunction with one of several popular bubble dynamics models, is effective at characterizing microbubble response and evaluating shell parameters. A theoretical model for the dynamics of a bubble in an elastic blood vessel is applied to study numerically the effect of confinement on the free oscillations of a bubble. The vessel wall deformations are described using a lumped-parameter membrane-type model, which is coupled to the Navier–Stokes equations for the fluid motion inside the vessel. It is shown that the bubble oscillations in a finite-length vessel are characterized by a spectrum of frequencies, with distinguishable high-frequency and low-frequency modes. The frequency of the high-frequency mode increases with the vessel elastic modulus and, for a thin-wall vessel, can be higher than the natural frequency of bubble oscillations in an unconfined liquid. In the limiting case of an infinitely stiff vessel wall, the frequency of the low-frequency mode approaches the well-known solution for a bubble confined in a rigid vessel. In order to interpret the results, a simple two-degree-of-freedom model is applied. The results suggest that in order to maximize deposition of acoustic energy, a bubble confined in a long elastic vessel has to be excited at frequencies higher than the natural frequency of the equivalent unconfined bubble. The energy method for analyzing piezoelectric ceramic transducers [B. S. Aronov, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 117, 210–220 (2005)] is applied to the treatment of transducers with mechanical systems that can be considered as two-dimensional. Analysis is made following the general outline of the theory of coupled vibration in two degrees-of-freedom systems and its extension in calculating the resonance frequencies of elastic bodies, as suggested by Giebe and Blechschmidt [Ann. A methodology for measuring elastic constants of different phases in materials with lamellar microstructure by line-focus acoustic microscopy is developed. The material microstructure investigated is modeled by generally anisotropic multilayers arbitrarily inclined to the sample surface on which acoustic microscopy measurements are performed. To calculate surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagation in such structures quasi-static effective elastic constants are determined and compared with calculated frequency-dependent constants. As a model material, practically important, Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–2Mo alloy is selected. Time-resolved line-focus acoustic microscopy experiments are performed on a Ti-6242 α/β single colony (Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–2Mo alloy) and on a Ti–6Al α-phase single crystal for which elastic constants of different phases are determined using inversion of measured SAW velocities. To validate the experimental methodology, SAW velocities in an X-cut quartz crystal are measured as a function of sample orientation angle and compared with predictions based on the known elastic moduli of quartz.
