For years, sustainable tourism has commanded the attention of academics and practitioners given its achievement through participatory planning. However, much research in the area has neglected to consider all voices of those (i.e., children) affected by tourism. This study, employing a post-test only experimental design, addresses this gap by including the voices of 498 children from six diverse European destinations concerning perceptions of tourism. Results show that children are willing to express their opinions given the opportunity. Moreover, their attitude towards tourists is negative, while they perceive locals to hold a subordinate position to tourists. In general, this study offers insight into children's attitudes to tourism from the host perspective, demonstrating that there is a unique insider's perspective that needs further research. This conceptual paper aims at characterising event sustainability from a long-term multi-stakeholder perspective, moving beyond the concept of Triple Bottom Line and event greening. Starting from the premise that sustainability should be understood critically in the wider context of society rather than from a conventional event management lens, the paper focuses on how stakeholders create sustainable value for themselves and for society beyond a specific event. Events should be considered as platforms for value creating systems and, as such, they are enabling actors (individuals and organisations) to share and integrate resources in their own social systems. The adoption of a systemic perspective grounded in Service Dominant Logic allows the authors to conceptualise sustainability as Sustainable Value Creation. Constructs derived from Business Models literature are utilised to analyse the key components of Sustainable Value Creation because they offer insights on the complex process of the creation and sharing of sustainable value focusing specifically on the stakeholders' activities, relationships and resource exchanges. The potential for resident attitude surveys to reduce the negative community impacts of tourism is constrained by their emphasis on closed-ended cognitive statements requiring simplistic numeric responses. This paper explores ways to obtain and analyze open-ended survey outputs from 791 residents in order to develop effective prescriptive recommendations for reducing the negative impacts, and increasing positive impacts from Australia's Gold Coast Schoolies Week (GCSW), a contentious event associated with widespread, high-risk antisocial behavior. Thematic content analysis revealed super-themes of unambivalent “opposition” to GCSW (22.0%) and “support” (7.3%), but also three super-themes that are conditional. “Mitigative prevention” (49.8%) includes supervision, alcohol/predator restrictions, spatial/temporal containment and dispersal themes, while “mitigative enhancement” (14.1%) includes constructive diversion, education and balanced media coverage themes. “Mitigative justice” (7.3%) is dominated by rule enforcement. The outcomes indicate support for social exchange theory in the expression of strategies through which those exchanges occur. The mitigative super-themes inform a research-based template for sustainably managing both GCSW and other contentious tourism-related events elsewhere. Using Tosun's three-stage citizen's participation hierarchy, support was indicated for the “induced participation” middle ground of consultation, with little support for top-down “coercive participation”, or for the citizen control of “spontaneous participation”. This paper explores the development and application of a bespoke modelling and scenario tool to quantify the full greenhouse gas (CO2e) footprint associated with visitor activity and consumption. Designed for use by destination decision-makers, it helps understand the full CO2e impact of visitors, explores potential mitigation strategies and identifies emissions reduction possibilities. REAP Tourism can calculate direct and indirect supply chain emissions related to accommodation, travel, food, shopping, services, attractions, activities and events. This paper demonstrates the tool at a range of different geographic levels in South West England. Initial results show overseas visitors to have an impact of 196 kg CO2e per day, domestic overnight visitors having 49 kg and day visitors 48 kg. Further exploration shows the tool's ability to show the impact of different marketing/development scenarios on CO2e emissions including holidaying locally strategies, encouraging longer stays, buying local goods and encouraging low meat diets. Comparisons show that luxury weekend visitors have five times the daily impact of family holiday visitors and ten times those of back-packers. The strengths and weaknesses of the tool's methodologies and its range of outputs able to inform tourism policy and decision-making are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
