Building envelope is a critical line of defense against external explosions, and laminated glass can greatly reduce the hazard of flying shards. Blast-resistant glazing research exists, but few areas remain unexplored related to resistance and blast response of the window system, the effect of the negative phase of the blast wave, and the dynamic reactions transmitted to the window frame and supporting structure. Therefore, dynamic numerical simulations and shock tube testing are presented in this paper. The dynamic response, in terms of center deflection and dynamic reactions, is measured and compared with the numerical results using the blast positive and negative phases. The measured dynamic material response of the interlayers was used for the model. The numerical model deflections and dynamic reactions correlated well within the first few peaks of the measured response of the glazing systems. Concrete anchoring systems are commonly used in blast resistant wall systems. These anchoring systems are often subjected to large tensile forces in a short time during an external blast event. Previous research has been conducted on anchoring systems to evaluate their response to cyclic and “shock” loads; however, the ultimate capacities of these systems were not determined, and tests were conducted at relatively slow loading rates. In this paper, testing has been performed to determine the ultimate capacity of various expansion anchors at high loading rates, which is characteristic of most blast events. Ultimately, concrete expansion anchors perform differently at high loading rates and some show improved ultimate performance. This paper will present the experimental findings and provide recommendations for anchor design under blast loads.

A research program was conducted to assess the capability of conventional non-load-bearing insulated precast concrete exterior wall panels to withstand blast loadings. Typical construction details from the tilt-up and prestressed concrete industries were examined. The sensitivity of insulation type, reinforcement, foam thickness, and shear tie type on the flexural resistance was assessed. Forty-two single-span static experiments were conducted on 14 different panel designs. From the results of these experiments, resistance functions and deformation limits for insulated concrete sandwich panels were determined. The resistance functions were used to develop predictive dynamic models for panels subjected to blast demands. The models were found to be accurate in comparison to measurements from four full-scale blast detonations. Several experimental studies were conducted to evaluate the energy-absorption capacity of conventional and nonconventional cold-formed steel (CFS) stud walls for blast resistance. Recently, experiments were performed to investigate the effect of minor modifications to conventional walls to enhance their performance to resist relatively moderate blast threats without significantly affecting the cost. However, to investigate all possible design parameters experimentally can be costly. Therefore, this paper focused on developing a reliable nonlinear numerical model that predicted the resistance of conventional walls. The model was verified using experimental data to validate its ability to simulate the resistance and toughness of the walls under various parameters, such as the end condition type, the utility holes, stud thickness, and screw sizes and layouts.
