10. Porous, hollow LiMnNiCoO microspheres as a positive electrode material for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract

A porous, hollow, microspherical composite of LiMnO and LiMnCoNiO (composition: LiMnNiCoO) was prepared using hollow MnO as the sacrificial template. The resulting composite was found to be mesoporous; its pores were about 20 nm in diameter. It also delivered a reversible discharge capacity value of 220 mAh g at a specific current of 25 mA g with excellent cycling stability and a high rate capability. A discharge capacity of 100 mAh g was obtained for this composite at a specific current of 1000 mA g. The high rate capability of this hollow microspherical composite can be attributed to its porous nature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper describes the application of Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Admittance (EQCA) methodology to the tracking of ion adsorption on composite electrode coatings consisting of highly porous activated carbon particles and polyvinylidene difluoride (PVdF) binder rigidly attached to quartz crystal surfaces. Solutions of LiBF and (CH)NBF in propylene carbonate (PC) were used in this study. At small charge densities, the effect of frequency change is nearly of gravimetric nature. We propose a new method to determine the mass contribution to the resonance frequency shift due to adsorption of ions and accompanying solvent molecules, revealing different ion/solvent population ratios for Li, (CH) N and BF ions correlated to the ion solvation ability. The EQCA model applied describes the change in the frequency and in resonance peak width in terms of dimensional changes of large carbon particles (bumps) and of pseudo-uniform layers of smaller particles mixed with PVdF. The type of oscillation energy dissipation in composite carbon electrodes with PVdF binder strongly depends on non-uniform potential-induced deformations of electrode particles, and this suggests a strong effect of solvent nature on the mechanical properties of polymeric binders. EQCA may provide important information on the role of polymeric binders during cycling of composite electrodes both for supercapacitors and for Li-ion batteries electrodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. The crystal structure of the inorganic surface films formed on Mg and Li intercalation compounds and the electrode performance

Abstract

Abstract: A crystallographic approach was applied to elucidate the influence of the nature of the surface films on the electrochemical behavior of Li and Mg intercalation compounds. This paper presents two examples: (1) protection of graphite electrodes by Li2CO3 surface films, and (2) the unique electrochemical behavior of Mg-containing Chevrel phases (MgCP) obtained by different synthetic routes. In the former case, the elucidation of the protection mechanism and the explanation of the high performance of such protected electrodes are based on the analysis of possible Li-ion motion in the carbonate crystal structure. In the latter case, a combination of synthesis, electrochemistry and XRD analysis was used to explain an unusual phenomenon: the difference between the excellent electrochemical behavior of the Chevrel phase (CP) based on Cu-leached Cu2Mo6S8 (CuCP), and the poor electrochemical activity of the high-temperature synthesized MgCP, with the same phase composition. It is shown that this phenomenon is caused by MgO formation on the surface of the latter material. The different surface chemistry of the MgCPs obtained by the two different synthetic routes was substantiated by revealing the correlation between the electrochemical activity and the chemical stability of these materials under ambient atmosphere conditions.
