Previous research has assessed the significance of various traffic offense convictions in forecasting driver involvement in further crashes, with the aim of finding a more empirical basis for adjudication programs. However there is currently controversy over new traffic law enforcement programs in British Columbia which puts the results in a different context. Research aiming to address such issues is described, using several years of crash and conviction data. It found there was a clear distinction between exceeding the speed limit and excessive speed in relation to accident-violation relationships.

A study of driver accident risk conducted by the Motor Vehicle Authorities of British Columbia using logistic regression analysis revealed that the accidents were caused by high risk drivers involved in one or more at-fault accidents. Analysis of the records of 1,998,347 drivers revealed that postperiod accidents per driver and preperiod number of crashes and convictions were directly proportional to each other. History of accident involvement of the drivers should be a factor that determines the issue of warnings, interviews or license suspension by driver licensing authority.

A study exploring the frequency of accidents of drivers affected by cognitive deficit disorders was conducted on 165 older drivers from British Columbia. Results indicate that these drivers were involved in twice as many accidents as the control group and that only 20% of the drivers did no continue driving after the accident. Among the 80% who continued driving, approximately 33% had one more accident after three years.
