- Abstract
As a rising power in 18th century Russia’s relations with England was turbulent one, as both it was at a breaking point. However, when in 1727 George II, ascended to English throne, AngloRussian relations were improved significantly. For, Russia become crucial for England’s continental policies and which is why relations between two states were improved. Especially, Russia’s relations with Austria were important for containing the ambitions of England’s historical rival, France. However, England was not the only state to use Russia for its continental plans. France wanted to use Russia in order to crush the Austria. Therefore, France worked with a great effort to achieve its goals. France while was trying to establish good relations with Russia, it was trying to undermine it. Thus, it managed to foment the SwedishRussian War in 1741. This war also paved way for 1741 Revolution which caused the downfall for government that leaned to Austria and England. 1741 Revolution foiled England’s plans for Russia and for years, English government was not able to use Russia for its goals. But they tried to regain their former position. When at last England managed to include Russia to Wars of Austrian Succession, it was too late. For peace negotiations were begun. It is clear that two rival states of Europe have emulation for Russia and France was the winner of this competition. France managed to keep Russia away from the Wars of Austrian Succession of 1740-1748. This is the failure of England’s Russian policy.
