Background HPV self-sampling is an emerging HPV testing method that offers reliable identification of cervical precancer and cancer. To determine the feasibility of HPV self-sampling in the USA, information is needed regarding women's use of HPV test and willingness to use self-sampling, especially among disparate groups such as African American (AA) and sub-Saharan African immigrant (SAI) women. The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with having had at least one HPV test and willingness to use HPV self-sampling among AA and SAI women. Methods AA and SAI women (n = 91) recruited from community settings completed a survey in a cross-sectional study. Data included sociodemographics, HPV and HPV testing knowledge, and willingness to use a HPV self-sampling test at home. Logistic regressions were performed to evaluate associations with having had a HPV test and willingness to use self-sampling. Results Respondents mean age was 38.2 years (SD = 12.6) and 65% were SAIs. The majority (84%) reported having had at least one Pap test and (36%) had at least one HPV test. Sixty-seven percent were willing to self-sample at home. Age, education, and HPV testing knowledge were associated with having had a HPV test. Being uninsured and likelihood to accept a Pap test if recommended were associated with willingness to use self-sampling at home for an HPV test. Conclusions Health care providers have an important role in recommending cervical cancer screening according to current guidelines. HPV self-sampling may be a promising strategy to reach older, less educated, uninsured, and underinsured Black women.

African immigrant women are underrepresented in health research on maternal mental health. Thus, there is a need to highlight successful recruitment strategies to engage African women in health-oriented research. This paper offers insights on recruitment strategies utilized in recruiting African immigrant women in Alberta (Canada) with infants 2 years of age or under for a survey study on maternal mental health. We recruited 136 African immigrant women. Most participants were recruited by using already established social networks in the community. Other successful strategies included referral from community partners (i.e., immigrant organizations, cultural association, religious institutions), participants, utilizing an online survey tool (i.e., Qualtrics), and through family and friend networks (i.e., word-of-mouth). This study evidently highlights the importance of utilizing multiple recruitment strategies to successfully meet the desired sample size for a survey study. We believe the lessons learned during the process of recruitment will be helpful for others working with other African immigrant women populations in Canada and in other Western societies.

Latino immigrant men have high rates of unhealthy alcohol use, a wide range of behaviors, from drinking above the recommended limits to severe alcohol use disorder, yet have low levels of treatment-seeking. Little is known about their preferred sources of care and barriers to care. Using survey data from a community-based sample of Latino immigrant men (N=121) with unhealthy alcohol use (AUDIT≥6), we described help-seeking patterns and perceived barriers to care. The mean AUDIT score was 20 (SD 10; range 6-40), and 49% of men had severe levels of unhealthy alcohol use (AUDIT score ≥ 20). We observed low help-seeking rates and high levels of perceived internal and external barriers. Thirty percent reported having sought help for drinking. Most men reported wanting to solve their drinking problem on their own (65%). Our findings were consistent with previous research. Future studies should further describe barriers to treatment among low-income Latino immigrant men with unhealthy alcohol use and identify ways to increase access to low-cost, high-quality treatment options.

The passage of US immigrant-related policies at the federal, state, and local level is on the rise. These policies may affect child health through several mechanisms. We performed a systematic review of English-language, peer-reviewed, quantitative studies examining US immigrant-related policies and the mental and physical health of youth in immigrant families. We searched PubMed and five social science databases for studies published between 1986 and 2019. Two independent reviewers screened the studies and appraised study quality. Of the final 17 studies, ten studies examined birth outcomes and seven studies examined other outcomes in childhood and adolescence (e.g., self-rated health). Generally, exclusionary policies were associated with worse health outcomes and inclusive policies were associated with better health outcomes. Several studies did not observe an association, but only one study found an association of the opposite direction. In that study, similar trends in different policy environments and across foreign-born and US-born women suggest alternative causes for the observed association. Overall, we find that exclusionary policies are, at best, neutral, but likely harmful towards child wellbeing, while inclusive policies can be beneficial. Brazilians represent a growing proportion of immigrants in the USA. Little is known about their health or healthcare utilization after their arrival. This study aimed to gather formative data to understand the needs of Brazilian immigrant women to guide public health interventions. We conducted five focus groups with Brazilian women born in Brazil (n = 47) and 13 key informant interviews with representatives from Brazilian-serving organizations. Participants were recruited from churches and social service organizations in the Greater Boston area. Findings revealed that mental health was the most pressing health priority; many attributed high levels of anxiety and depression to worries about undocumented status, separation from social networks, and strenuous work schedules. Occupational health issues were frequently mentioned, including musculoskeletal complaints, skin rashes, and respiratory problems. Domestic violence was also a concern, and many women feared reporting to police due to undocumented status. Most reported good access to medical care and described the quality of healthcare services as superior to that available in Brazil. However, many reported challenges with interpersonal communication with providers, dissatisfaction with a perceived unwillingness from providers to order medical tests or prescribe treatment, and limited access to mental health services. There was agreement that effective intervention strategies should use social media, radio, and group education in churches.

The relation between discrimination and higher depression by way of reductions in self-esteem has been documented among some racial and ethnic minority populations. Yet, the extent to which the results extend to general forms of discrimination as well as multiple second-generation immigrant ethnic groups remains underexamined. This article assessed the mediating role of self-esteem in the relation between general forms of perceived discrimination and depression symptoms among second-generation immigrant adolescents and assessed the extent to which the relations were invariant across ethnic sub-groups. Analyses were based on data from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study over two periods spanning adolescence (N = 4288; Mage = 14 and 17). The mediating role of self-esteem was tested via path analysis for the full sample, and multiple-group path analyses compared these results across White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, and other (multiracial) immigrants. Indirect effects were obtained via 5000 bootstrapped replications. In the full sample, the relation between discrimination and depression was mediated by self-esteem with approximately 30% of the total effect mediated. Said mediated relation was only confirmed among White and Asian sub-groups, with 27% and 49% of the total effects mediated, respectively. The results suggest that the process by which discrimination relates to mental health may vary between immigrant racial/ethnic sub-groups. In addition, the results highlight the value of considering broader categorizations of perceived discrimination beyond race or ethnicity to understand complexities associated with intersecting marginalized identities among this population.

INTRODUCTION: Research has demonstrated that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a safe and effective way to decrease HPV-related cancers; however, the vaccination rate in the U.S. is suboptimal. The current study examined racial and ethnic disparities in HPV vaccination among a nationally representative sample, including Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (NHPI). This study also investigated the associations between nativity and vaccination, and sex-differences between race/ethnicity and vaccination and nativity and vaccination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of adults aged 18–26 years drawn from the 2014 NHPI National Health Interview Survey (n=2,590) and the general 2014 National Health Interview Survey (n=36,697). Log-binomial models were fitted to examine differences in vaccination. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant racial/ethnic difference in HPV vaccination (p=0.003). Background Data from the Survey of the Health of Urban Residents (SHUR) identified connections between police brutality and medical mistrust, generating significant media, policy, and research attention. Amidst intersecting crises of COVID-19, racism, and police brutality, this report describes survey development and data collection procedures for the SHUR. Basic Procedures We conducted focus groups with Black men, Latinxs, and immigrants in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Findings were used to develop and refine measures of conditions salient to the health of urban residents across the country. Quota sampling was employed; oversampling people of color and persons whose usual source of care was not a doctor’s office. Main Findings Non-Hispanic Whites made up just under two thirds of the sample (63.65%, n = 2793). Black/African American respondents accounted for 14.2% of the sample (n = 623), while 11.62% (n = 510) were Latinx. Only 43.46% of respondents reported a doctor’s office as their usual source of care. Novel measures of population-specific stressors include a range of negative encounters with the police, frequency of these encounters, and respondents’ assessments of whether the encounters were necessary. SHUR assessed the likelihood of calling the police if there is a problem, worries about incarceration, and cause-specific stressors such as race-related impression management. Principal Conclusions SHUR (n = 4389) is a useful resource for researchers seeking to address the health implications of experiences not frequently measured by national health surveillance surveys. It includes respondents’ zip codes, presenting the opportunity to connect these data with zip code-level health system, social and economic characteristics that shape health beyond individual factors.

The similar socioeconomic position of black and Hispanic women coupled with better birth outcomes among Hispanic women is termed the "Hispanic Paradox." However, birth outcome disparities among Hispanic women exist by maternal nativity. Persistent unequal exposure over time to stressors contributes to these disparities. We hypothesized that variation in maternal resilience to stressors also exists by race, ethnicity, and nativity. We utilized data from the Spontaneous Prematurity and Epigenetics of the Cervix study in Boston, MA (n = 771) where resilience was measured mid-pregnancy using the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale 25. We assessed resilience differences by race/ethnicity, by nativity then by race, ethnicity, and nativity together. We also assessed the risk of low resilience among foreign-born women by region of origin. We used Poisson regression to calculate risk ratios for low resilience, adjusting for maternal age, education, and insurance. Resilience did not differ significantly across race/ethnicity or by foreign-born status in the overall cohort. US-born Hispanic women were more likely to be in the low resilience tertile compared with their foreign-born Hispanic counterparts (adjusted RR 3.52, 95% CI 1.18-10.49). Foreign-born Hispanic women also had the lowest risk of being in the low resilience tertile compared with US-born non-Hispanic white women (aRR 0.33, 95% CI 0.11-0.98). Resilience did not differ significantly among immigrant women by continent of birth. Overall, foreign-born Hispanic women appear to possess a resilience advantage. Given that this group often exhibits the lowest rates of adverse birth outcomes, our findings suggest a deeper exploration of resilience among immigrant Hispanic women.

Compared to the US-born population, Hispanic immigrants are reported to have lower age-adjusted prevalence of hypertension. However, country of origin, race/ethnicity, and risk behaviors associated with acculturation, including hazardous drinking, can affect the prevalence of hypertension. Additionally, health disparities across immigration/nativity status may be associated with suboptimal antihypertensive treatment and control of hypertension. In the present study, population-based data from the years 2016 to 2018 of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) were analyzed to assess the association of nativity status and hazardous drinking with hypertension among US-born and foreign-born Hispanic populations. Age-adjusted prevalence of past-year hypertension among foreign-born Hispanics was lower than US-born Hispanics. However, the proportion of Hispanic immigrants who had their blood pressure checked by a healthcare professional was also smaller than US-born Hispanics, suggesting that the prevalence of hypertension among Hispanic immigrants may be underreported. Hazardous drinking was associated with decreased odds of antihypertensive treatment among the Hispanic immigrants.

Immigrants to the USA have disparate access to health insurance coverage and healthcare services. We evaluate the effects of gaining insurance following the January 2014 Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) key provisions implementation on health services use among foreign- (FB) and US-born (USB) adults. Longitudinal data from two panels (2013/2014 and 2014/2015) of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey on FB and USB adults, ages 26–64 (unweighted n = 15,232), and difference-in-differences analysis using generalized estimating equations were used to estimate the effects of insurance gain. The primary outcomes were five measures of healthcare utilization including yearly routine care appointment, annual number of physician office visits, annual number of prescription medications filled or refilled, use of the emergency department (ED) during the year, and having an inpatient hospital stay during the year. Immigrants were more likely to gain health insurance between 2013 and 2015 relative to USB adults (6.3% vs. 4.4%) but remained much more likely to be continuously uninsured by 2015 (20.8% vs. 6.4%). OBJECTIVES: To examine nativity-based differences in 3 cardiovascular biomarkers commonly used to assess cardiovascular dysregulation. METHODS: Data was pooled from the 2001–2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to compare biomarker risk scores for the US-born (n = 4693) and foreign-born (n = 2968) Black adults. We used multivariable-adjusted logistic regression to assess the association between nativity and cardiovascular biomarkers, controlling for gender, age, health behaviors, and socioeconomic status. RESULTS: In the full model, a foreign-born health advantage was not observed in all 3 cardiovascular biomarkers. In fact, foreign-born Blacks were almost twice as likely to have high mean diastolic blood pressure compared with the US-born individuals (OR = 1.82; 95% CI = 1.15, 2.88) and had an increased risk of high 60-s pulse. Foreign-born individuals living in the USA for less than 5 years were 62% less likely to have high mean systolic blood pressure than individuals living in the USA for 20 years or more. CONCLUSIONS: The foreign-born health advantage among Blacks was not observed in the cardiovascular biomarkers under study, suggesting that the commonly cited Healthy Immigrant Effect may need to be reassessed.

BACKGROUND: The relationship context is influential in shaping HIV risk and preventive behaviors. Yet, there is little understanding about how shared or separate residence of partners shapes perceptions that affect HIV prevention. METHODS: We explored how shared or separate residence from one’s partner impacts HIV testing intentions among Latino immigrants in the United States. We analyzed data from 206 Latino immigrants residing in New York City, and examined three potential models to assess the relationships between partner residence, partner approval of HIV testing, and HIV testing behaviors. RESULTS: Results indicated that shared residence was associated with greater partner approval to test for HIV (B=0.48, 95% CI 0.01, 0.96, p = .04), and in turn, higher partner approval was associated with greater intention to test for HIV in the next 12 months (B=0.38, 95% CI 0.15, 0.62., p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest the need to consider partner residency as an important factor in shaping determinants of HIV testing behaviors. Conceptualization of couples as living separately, across national borders, is warranted for couple-based health interventions given the current socio-political climate in the United States. Future research focused on couple-based HIV prevention should examine strategies and policies to preserve or strengthen partner dynamics among couples living apart.

The Hispanic/Latino population is the largest minority group in the United States. Research has documented health disadvantages of undocumented Latinos/Hispanics compared to their documented counterparts. The economic and social conditions that influence immigrant health may operate differently for undocumented immigrants compared to their documented counterparts. Access to healthcare, access to health-protective resources (social, economic, and political contributors), and immigration enforcement actions are three mechanisms that affect immigrants and contribute to the social and health inequities within the Latino/Hispanic population. We argue that social factors within these three mechanisms distinctly affect undocumented immigrants. We discuss these factors by synthesizing the existing literature on documentation status and health. In doing so, we highlight opportunities for future research and provide recommendations for policies and interventions that can ease the taxing effects of documentation status on health among Latinos/Hispanics.

This exploratory community-based study assessed Brazilian immigrant parents' awareness of HPV and the HPV vaccine, HPV information sources, and their interest in participating in a future HPV-related cancer prevention study. This study is a cross-sectional analysis of data from a convenience sample of Brazilian immigrant parents living in selected cities in Massachusetts. Participants completed a brief survey in their language of preference (English or Portuguese) administered by bilingual interviewers. Forty-seven Brazilian immigrant parents, each representing a unique family, participated in the study. All participants completed the survey in Portuguese. Although the majority reported being aware of HPV (93.6%, n = 44), only 74.5% (n = 35) were aware of the HPV vaccine. Fewer fathers than mothers had heard of the HPV vaccine (61.9%; n = 13 vs. 84.6%, n = 22; p = 0.04). Of those who were aware of the HPV vaccine (n = 35), 82.6% (n = 29) reported hearing about the HPV vaccine from their child's physician. Additionally, nearly all participants (97.9%, n = 46) reported being interested in participating in future HPV-related cancer prevention study. Findings of this exploratory study indicate parents' low to moderate awareness of the HPV vaccine and high interest in participating in future HPV-related cancer prevention study. These findings are important and serve as a valuable first step toward building a knowledge foundation that is critically needed for developing future studies targeting Brazilians immigrant parents and adolescents living in the USA.

To understand the health and safety concerns of Korean immigrant women nail salon workers in the Greater New York City area and their experiences of health seeking and health service utilization, 20 semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using interpretive hermeneutic phenomenology. Most worried about working in nail salons and experienced work-related health symptoms. However, they were disinclined toward personal protective device use because of discomfort and inconvenience. Major barriers to healthcare utilization limited their healthcare use to times when they had intolerable symptoms, preventing opportunities for regular screening tests. To overcome these limitations, workers actively sought available resources and health-related information online and through personal networks, the latter facilitated by living in a Korean community. Despite efforts to maintain their health and manage their symptoms, Korean nail salon workers worried about getting sick as they got older due to prolonged occupational chemical exposure and limited healthcare access. Appropriate education and intervention should aim to resolve current barriers to personal protective device use and healthcare use and provide a source of care for uninsured workers.

Are there disparities in depressive symptoms among immigrant groups from different countries? With data from the New Immigrant Survey (2003), which includes immigrants from Mexico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica, this paper examines the odds of depressive symptoms using a series of logistic regression analyses. It draws on segmented assimilation and the cumulative inequality theories to understand and explicate the extent to which immigrants' demographic characteristics, pre-immigration experiences, and acculturation in the USA might have an impact on immigrants' mental health outcomes. Being from Haiti; Dominican Republic; Cuba; and a woman, with unfavorable childhood health, and migrated at an early age were statistically significant predictors of depressive symptoms. Compared to Mexican immigrants, Cuban and Dominican immigrants reported higher odds of depressive symptoms, controlling for gender, age, education, and pre-immigration experiences. By contrast, Haitian and Jamaican immigrants reported lower odds of depressive symptoms. Female immigrants had higher odds of reporting depressive symptoms compared to their male counterparts. Relative to immigrants with good childhood health, those with unfavorable childhood health had higher odds of reporting worse health outcomes. In the logistic regression models, immigrants who migrated at older age reported lower odds of depressive symptoms. By shedding light on the health status of understudied Caribbean immigrant groups in comparison with Mexican immigrants, this study challenges the healthy migrant effect and serves as a starting point to guide policies that aim at decreasing health disparities among different immigrant groups.

There is growing evidence for the adverse health effects of structural and individual forms of discrimination in multiple religious, ethnic, and racial groups. Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Arab Americans have experienced increasingly more frequent and visible forms of discrimination. However, the impact of these experiences on their mental well-being requires further investigation. This study examines the association between perceived discrimination and several markers of mental health and well-being, using cross-sectional data from a convenience sample of 279 Arab American adults from southeast Michigan. After adjustment for a series of relevant confounders, perceived discrimination was significantly associated with depressive symptoms (estimate 0.93, 95% CI 0.53, 1.34, p < 0.01), anxiety symptoms (estimate 0.48, 95% CI 0.19, 0.77, p < 0.01), and poor self-rated health (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.08, 1.58, p < 0.01). The study highlights the need to address and mitigate health disparities among individuals of Arab descent and improves awareness of the potential health effects of ongoing structural and interpersonal discrimination toward this population.

An emerging body of research finds that African American and Caribbean Black adolescents are highly susceptible to discrimination, which negatively affects their mental health. Exposure to discrimination appears to be more consequential for mental health among Caribbean Black adolescents; however, past research investigating the differential impact of perceived discrimination on the mental health of African American and Caribbean Black adolescents has failed to take into account parental nativity status. Using data from the National Survey of American Life-Adolescent Supplement (NSAL-A), 2001-2004, this research examines differences in mental health profiles among African American adolescents (n = 783) and Caribbean Black adolescents with US-born (n = 216) and immigrant parents (n = 144) and differential vulnerability to perceptions of discrimination. Findings suggest that Caribbean Black adolescents with immigrant parents report fewer depressive symptoms than African American adolescents. Caribbean Black adolescents with immigrant parents also perceive lower levels of discrimination than Caribbean Black adolescents with US-born parents. Generally, greater perceptions of discrimination were associated with diminished mental health among all adolescents; however, relative to African American adolescents, associations between perceived discrimination and both mental health indicators were augmented among Caribbean Black adolescents with immigrant parents. No differences were observed between African American adolescents and Caribbean Black adolescents with US-born parents. Theoretical and policy implications of these findings are discussed.

The largest racial/ethnic minority group in the United States, Hispanics, especially Hispanic immigrants, have been considered healthier than groups of other ethnicity (including Whites, the majority). However, chronic illnesses such as cancer and diabetes are often seen in this culturally, ethnically diverse group. The present study had two aims. First was to explain two health outcomes, which were presence of chronic illness (any of the five common conditions cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, cancer, and/or diabetes/prediabetes) and self-rated health, in terms of links to certain factors in acculturation, social status, health, social support, and lifestyle. Second was to determine how uniform these links might be across five ethnic groups: Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central/South American. We combined data from 17 years of the National Health Interview Survey (1999-2015) and subjected these secondary measures to logistic and linear regression, separately by ethnicity, to explain both outcomes. With few exceptions, results generally linked illness/health to the tested independent variables. Additionally, results confirmed ethnicity to moderate the outcomes' associations with the independent variables. Ethnicity-specific analysis showed the two outcomes to exhibit dissimilar relationships with certain independent variables across ethnic groups. Research that (as has been common) lumps together respondents whose Hispanic ethnicities may differ disregards some meaningful variation rather than accounting for it. In future research-and in subsequent evidence-based policy/practice development-all essential sociocultural factors, including ethnicity, should be carefully outlined, advancing good health for the entire Hispanic immigrant population.

Objectives The USA maintains the world’s largest immigration detention system. This study examines the mechanisms by which detention serves as a catalyst for worsening health. Methods Using data from detained immigrants in California (n = 493) from 2013 to 2014, we assessed the prevalence of exposure to conditions of confinement hypothesized to negatively influence health; the extent to which conditions of confinement are associated with psychological stress, diagnosed mental health conditions, and/or declines in general health; and the cumulative impact of confinement conditions on these outcomes. Results We found that each condition increased the likelihood of one or more negative health conditions, but there was also a cumulative effect: for each additional confinement condition, the odds of worsening general health rose by 39% and reporting good health decreased by 24%. Conclusions Confinement conditions are associated with poor physical and mental health outcomes among immigrants detained in immigration prisons. Policies that seek to improve specific conditions in detention centers may remove some risks of harm, but alternatives to detention are likely to be most effective.

Existing literature on the epidemiology of psychiatric and substance use disorders and service use among African Americans in the USA has not fully addressed the heterogeneity of Black populations. This study compares the proportions and diverse characteristics of these sub-populations, their mental and substance use diagnoses, and related service use.The data for this study was obtained from the restricted version of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions Wave III (NESARC-III). Participants who identified as Black/African Americans were categorized into four groups: African-born, Caribbean-born, US-born with at least one immigrant parent, and US-born with both parents born in the USA. Effect sizes were used to evaluate bivariate between-group differences and multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors that independently differentiated each of the first three groups from the reference group termed US-born.This exploratory analysis strengthened the notion of the immigrant paradox as African- and Caribbean-born Black individuals scored significantly higher on all measures of quality of life and had fewer mental health and substance use diagnoses, but this advantage was not observed in the children of immigrants born in the USA. There were few significant differences in service use across the groups after adjusting for clinical characteristics.The differences observed in the diverse Black populations of the USA, across measures of mental and physical health, and substance use, deserve attention in future research, policy, and program development.

Hispanic/Latino (H/L) children have lower prevalence of neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD) than other groups. The explanations for this are complex, but may be related to nativity, language barriers, and lack of access to and utilization of healthcare. Previous research focused on how these factors affect children with NDD, but little research has jointly examined whether these factors predict NDD. This study examines whether social and environmental factors explain low prevalence of NDD in this population. This study uses nationally representative Integrated Public Use Microdata Series National Health Interview Survey data (N = 200,622) and multivariate logistic regression analysis to compare NDD prevalence in white and H/L children (average age of 10.2), and examines whether nativity, healthcare access, healthcare utilization, and language barriers explain this disability disparity. Findings reveal that the H/L NDD disparity is not explained by differences in access to or utilization of healthcare, or as a result of language differences that may create barriers to NDD diagnosis. While H/L children whose sampled adult was born in the USA have lower rates of NDD than whites, H/Ls whose sampled adult were not born in the USA have even lower probability of NDD than H/Ls who were born in the USA. These findings may be a result of cultural differences in knowledge or understanding of what constitutes a disability or the result of differential treatment within the healthcare system among H/Ls. The findings underscore the importance of accessible and culturally appropriate health and clinical care interventions among H/L communities.

BACKGROUND: Disability in older adults leads to poor quality of life, is costly for the health system and is a risk for mortality. Little is known about disability in older immigrants to the United States. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the evidence on the prevalence and factors associated with disability in older adult immigrants. METHODS: We conducted searches in PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Scopus. Disability was defined as difficulty in performing basic or instrumental activities of daily living. Older adult was defined as 65 years and older. Immigrant status was defined as someone born outside of the United States. RESULTS: Eighteen articles met the inclusion criteria. Seven studied Hispanic/Latino immigrants, 6 studied Asian immigrants, 4 studied diverse older immigrant samples, and one studied European immigrants. Prevalence of disability ranged from 2% to 49% in Asians, and 3% to 58.1% in Hispanic/Latinos. In a diverse sample of immigrants, the prevalence of disability was 19.3%. Correlates of disability included female gender, low income, limited education, single status, migration in late adulthood, obesity, arthritis, and diabetes. Factors protective against disability in older adult immigrants were: acculturation, migrating at a younger age, exercise, alcohol intake, and church attendance. CONCLUSION: Disability prevalence was generally lower in Asian immigrants compared to Hispanic/Latino immigrants. Identification of the precise rates and factors associated with disability in older immigrants can inform health interventions for this population.

This study sought factors in immigrants' utilization of services of physicians and dentists, as well as their use of prescription medication. The study used data from 1452 adult immigrants collected for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2012. Logistic regression results showed that age, US citizenship, and health insurance status were associated with the use of physician, dentist, and medication services. For this sample, physician visits were associated negatively with Hispanic ethnicity, poverty-level family income, and English-language proficiency. Also, dentist visits were associated positively with female gender, good health, and more education; and negatively with Black ethnicity, family income at 101-200% of poverty level, and English-language proficiency. Medication use was associated positively with poor health and female gender, and negatively with Hispanic ethnicity. Implications for policy and intervention development/implementation are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to compare prenatal characteristics and postpartum outcomes among Somali and non-Somali women residing in Olmsted County. We reviewed the medical records for a cohort of Somali women (≥18 years old; N= 298) who had singleton births between January 2009 and December 2014 and for an age-matched non-Somali cohort (N= 298) of women residing in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Logistic regression models which accounted for repeated measures were used to assess differences in prenatal and postpartum outcomes between Somali and non-Somali women. Somali women had a significantly higher odds of cesarean section (adjusted OR=1.81; 95% CI=1.15, 2.84). Additionally, Somali women had a significantly lower odds of postpartum depression (adjusted OR=0.27; 95% CI=0.12, 0.63). The reported adverse postpartum outcomes have implications for interventions aimed at addressing perinatal care disparity gaps for Somali women immigrant and refugee populations.

Recently, there has been an increasing amount of scientific interest towards the broad theme of racial inequalities and their impact on human health, specifically exploring how ethnic discrimination affects the wellness of black people and the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of these conditions of inequity also affect black children. Discrimination and racism should be routinely considered as causative agents or triggers of disease and routinely included in clinical examination, during history collection and evaluation of vital signs. This will benefit child and family health, worldwide. We shared our recent experience by reporting a case of a 13-year-old black girl who came to Italy from Niger about 3 years earlier through the traumatizing migratory journey. She was evaluated in the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) for sleepiness that had progressively worsened during the last days. We describe the case and how it was handled differently by pediatricians and pediatric trainees with equally different personal and professional backgrounds. We also report the preliminary results of a national survey aimed to assess discrimination and inequalities in Italian Paediatric Residency Schools. Medical ability has been allowing us to respond rapidly to a novel virus in order to save lives. The expertise of doctors and researchers must be used to evaluate this hidden crisis as well, to address racism and injustice and to protect vulnerable people from harm. Our case showed us how it is essential including racial and gender discrimination in a diagnostic process.
