The second aim is to take the reader through the various stages of critiquing using a guide., In the paper, we explain at each stage the research terms that can deter the novice critic from reading and understanding the findings in research., From this we hope the reader will have developed an ability to do their own critiquing, so that they are better informed about the quality of research that influences nursing practice., Abstract In this paper we have taken a previously published paper on the effectiveness of clinical supervision and undertaken a systematic critique of the merits of this quantitative research using a recognized critiquing framework compiled by Coughlan et al. (2007). Our purpose was twofold: First, we wanted to demonstrate the various stages of critiquing a paper in order that the reader might make an informed judgment of the quality and relevance of the research. The reader/critic is then able to decide whether to use this research in their own practice. Second, we wanted to assist the reader to develop their own critical, analytical skills through methodically appraising the merits of published research. Nursing as an evidence-based profession requires nurses at both pre- and post-registration level to be able to understand, synthesize and critique research, this being a fundamental part of many nursing curricula. These have become core skills to acquire because implementing up-to-date evidence is the cornerstone of contemporary nursing practice. We have provided in this paper a template for critiquing, which is based on our combined experiences as academics specifically in teaching at the bachelor, master's and doctoral levels. Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject?: Major depressive disorder is the most prevalent of all mental illnesses.10%–20% of patients with depression and 1% of the population overall have treatment‐resistant depression (TRD).DBS is an emerging investigational treatment for TRD with documented clinical efficacy and safety.The framework of the recovery model includes both clinical and personal recovery. Personal recovery is a self‐process in which hope, empowerment and optimism are embraced to overcome the impact of mental illness on one's sense of self.Although clinical and functional outcomes of DBS for TRD have been well documented in the previous studies, personal recovery as an outcome has been explored only in a handful of studies. Since the existing literature on personal recovery in DBS studies is limited, the contribution of this paper is crucial to this field.For individuals who responded to deep brain stimulation clinically, neither participants nor family believed it cured their depression, but rather there was a significant decrease in the severity of symptoms of depression. A holistic‐oriented framework (that includes personal recovery) is significant for those individuals with TRD undergoing DBS. Personal and clinical recovery are two different constructs, and individuals may experience one or the other or both.The experience of participants who responded to deep brain stimulation recognized that the recovery from depression is a process of reconstructing self. This process involved a period of adjustment that evoked a deeper self‐awareness, re‐engagement with daily living and newfound gratitude in living. Introduction: Multiple trials of antidepressant treatments in patients with depression pose a major challenge to the mental health system. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an emerging and promising investigational treatment to reduce depressive symptoms in individuals with treatment‐resistant depression (TRD). The clinical and functional outcomes of DBS for TRD have been well documented in previous studies; however, studies of personal recovery as an outcome of DBS specific to the target of subcallosal cingulate cortex in patients with TRD are limited. Aim: To explore the processes of personal recovery in patients with treatment‐resistant depression following subcallosal cingulate‐deep brain stimulation. Method: Participants were 18 patients with TRD who participated in the subcallosal cingulate (SCC)‐DBS trial and 11 family members. They also participated in add‐on individual cognitive behavioural therapy during the trial. A qualitative constructivist grounded theory approach was used to conceptualize the personal recovery process of patients and families. Results: While every participant and their families' journey were unique following the deep brain stimulation intervention, a theoretical model of Balancing to Establish a Reconstructed Self emerged from the data. The themes underlying the model were (1) Balancing to Establish a Reconstructed Self: A Whole‐Body Experience, (2) The Liminal Space in‐between: Balancing with Cautious Optimism, (3) Hope: Transitioning from Emotion‐Focussed Living to Goal‐Oriented Planning and (4) Support: Negotiating Relationships. Discussion: This is the first study examining recovery from patients' perspectives as an outcome of SCC‐DBS intervention for TRD. The study shows that personal recovery is a gradual and continual process of reconstruction of the self, developing through supportive relationships. Clinical and personal recovery are two distinct constructs, and individuals may experience one or the other or both. Most patients who do respond clinically experience improvement in terms of having optimism and hope. Some patients, however, respond with significant symptom reduction but are not able to achieve personal recovery to experience joy or hope for improved quality of living. Implications for Practice: Strategies for personal recovery for both patients and family need to be considered during and post deep brain stimulation intervention. Method: Mixed methodology was used, including a cross‐sectional analysis of psychological distress (DASS‐21) and individual semi‐structured interviews (10 professionals maintaining quarantine and 10 quarantined persons). Results: Overall levels of psychological distress were low. Those quarantining from Victoria had significantly lower depression scores compared to all other departure points. Qualitative analysis identified distress being linked to a lack of control, isolation and miscommunication. Discussion: Quarantine was associated with low levels of psychological distress. This was lower in people travelling from Victoria, a state where there were higher rates of infections and restrictions. Interviews showed that psychological distress was conceptualized as being associated with supervised quarantine, but participants recognized the overall importance of quarantine. Implications for Practice: Mental health professionals supporting quarantined people should consider original departure points may predict levels of psychological distress. Implementing ways of gaining control through affording choice, improving communication channels and establishing peer support networks within quarantine settings may help maintain mental well‐being. A recovery‐oriented approach by mental health professionals can reduce hospital stays and medical costs for people diagnosed with mental illness.There are similarities and differences between recovery‐oriented approaches for individuals diagnosed with dementia and those diagnosed with mental illness. This reflects the characteristics of irreversible dementia.Although dementia courses at recovery colleges are increasing, dementia recovery is in its infancy and course content varies. A self‐administered questionnaire was developed for nurses working in a dementia ward, and an exploratory factor analysis was conducted. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to test for convergent and discriminant validity. The Recovery Attitude Questionnaire was used to examine criterion‐related validity. Results: An exploratory factor analysis produced a 19‐item scale and identified five factors (KMO value: 0.854). The Cronbach's alpha for the overall scale was.856, with each subfactor showing a range of.742–.792, validating its reliability. Discussion: The results of confirmatory factor analysis supported the five‐factor construct. Reliability was verified, but some issues remained in convergent and discriminant validity. Shaming and bullying were significantly associated with lower professional functioning and higher intention to leave, while burnout may at least partially mediate the association between these variables. Conclusions: The phenomenon of shaming and bullying of mental health workers by patients is common and is associated with lower functioning and higher burnout, which have a negative impact on the patient‐caregiver interaction. Implications for Practice: There is a need to establish a policy for early detection of shaming of mental health workers in order to prevent burnout or intention to leave. Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject?: The role of informal caregiver can have both negative and positive consequences for a person's well‐being. The main theoretical framework for explaining these consequences is the stress process model, which considers contextual variables, stressors and mediating/moderating factors. The latter are psychosocial factors such as coping strategies, personal mastery, social support or beliefs and values which may influence caregiver well‐being. The perception of gains in caregiving has also been proposed as a mediating variable since it may act as a coping strategy. However, few studies have examined values and perceived gains as mediating variables with life satisfaction as the outcome. What the paper adds to existing knowledge?: This study explores the role of character strengths and caregiver gains as mediators between stressors and life satisfaction in informal caregivers of persons with dementia. The results identify hope as a key character strength, its lack being one pathway through which stress may lead to low life satisfaction and low perceived gains from caregiving. Method: Participants were 112 informal caregivers. Hierarchical regression, correlation and mediation analyses were performed. Results: Lower life satisfaction was associated with being female, unmarried, caring for someone with greater cognitive impairment, a higher level of stress, having restricted leisure time and perceiving financial difficulties. Hope mediated the associations between perceived stress and both life satisfaction and perceived gains of caregiving. Discussion: Hope is a key strength and its lack is one pathway through which stress may cause low satisfaction and low perceived gains from caregiving. Accessible summary: What is known on the subject?: Mental healthcare requires acceptance of suicide and flexible attitudes especially in relation to caring for people who have suicidal thoughts or who have attempted suicide. Nurse education programmes for student nurses can shape positively the attitudes of individual participants, yet limited research exists on what nursing students' attitudes currently are towards people who are suicidal. What this paper adds to existing knowledge?: This paper adds to the developing international comparative work that is providing a greater understanding of cultural perceptions of suicide amongst students. This paper along with existing literature highlights a potential relationship between certain religious belief systems and their potential to be protective against suicide. At the same time, such religious belief is more likely to be associated with more judgmental attitude towards suicidal behaviour. This paper using a validated research tool, devised by a research psychologist, scored for the first time, individual student attitudes towards caring for people that are suicidal, whilst establishing the overall differences between the two countries from which the data are collected. Abstract: Introduction: Suicide is a major public health issue internationally, and the impact of positive or negative attitudes amongst the mental health professional workforce warrants scrutiny. The study aimed to examine English and Turkish nursing students' attitudes towards people with suicidal behaviour. Method: This cross‐cultural study reports on attitudes of 240 nursing students towards suicide in Turkey and 82 nursing students in the UK. A reliable and valid 24 item “Attitudes towards Suicide Scale” and “Social Reactions to Suicidal Persons Scale” were used to measure attitudes. Results: The UK nursing students were found to display more accepting attitudes to suicide, and scored higher on acceptability of suicide, seeing suicide as a solution and open reporting and discussion of suicide subscales than their Turkish counterparts. Turkish nursing students scored higher on punishment after death and hiding suicidal behaviour subscales than the UK students. Turkish nursing students scored significantly higher on deterring subscale of reactions to a suicidal peer scale than the UK nursing students. Implications for practice: It is vital for nurse students to develop positive acceptance of suicide through education, reflection and clinical supervision to be more therapeutic towards suicidal patients. Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject?: There is only limited information on how the COVID‐19 pandemic has affected people diagnosed with mental health disorders, especially people admitted to psychiatric wards.We surveyed the views of inpatients at Qatar's only psychiatric hospital regarding how the pandemic had affected their mental health and social changes they had experienced during the pandemic. What the paper adds to existing knowledge?: Nearly half (43%) of those who completed the survey reported that the pandemic had led to a deterioration in their mental health.Those who reported deterioration in their mental health during the pandemic were significantly more likely to have experienced negative social changes during the pandemic. Introduction: The impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on people under the care of mental health services has received relatively little attention in the scientific literature. Aim: To assess psychiatric inpatients' views regarding their mental health and experience of social change during the pandemic. Method: Cross‐sectional survey of consecutive patients admitted to Qatar's only psychiatric hospital between mid‐June and mid‐October 2020. Results: Data were analysed for 114/284 (40%) patients admitted during the study period. 8 (7%) reported a history of COVID‐19. 43% reported that the pandemic had led to deterioration in their mental health, 11% to an improvement and 39% that there had been no attributable change. Those reporting worsened mental health, attributable to the pandemic, were significantly more likely to report having experienced four negative social changes during the pandemic, namely reduced ability to discuss emotions/feelings with family members, decreased time spent exercising, decreased time spent relaxing and increased stress from the home. Consequently, mental health professionals must be aware of the impact of trauma and of how they can avoid retraumatizing service‐users. Care delivered with this awareness is known as trauma‐informed care (TIC).There is little research on attitudes towards TIC. To date, only one study explored these attitudes among MHNs exclusively. Additionally, a richer understanding of TIC attitudes using methods like in‐depth interviews is needed. It is unclear whether knowledge of TIC results in more favourable attitudes. Aim: To examine nurses' TIC attitudes at a psychiatric hospital. Method: A mixed‐method design was used. One hundred and thirty‐six MHNs completed the Attitudes Related to Trauma‐Informed Care scale. Data were analysed using inferential statistics. A focus group interview among ten MHNs ensued. Thematic analysis was used. Results: MHNs demonstrated favourable TIC attitudes. Ambivalent attitudes for the subscale "Causes" were identified. MHNs employed for less than 5 years at the hospital and those in acute settings displayed more favourable attitudes on some subscales. Three themes "Awareness," "Unhealthy boundaries" and "Inhibition" emerged from qualitative analysis. Discussion: Challenges uncovered in the provision of TIC include the unacknowledged impact of trauma on challenging behaviour among MHNS, the influence of blurred professional boundaries with long‐term clients on the cycle of perpetuated trauma identified by previous research and MHNs work‐related traumas. Implications for practice: Identified challenges to TIC integration among MHNs can facilitate the implementation of TIC in hospitals. Method: Two focus groups were held with fifteen students who had experienced C‐PAL in four in‐patient wards. Findings: Students' overall experience of piloting C‐PAL was positive. Aim: We aimed to describe and explain long‐term psychiatric inpatients' participation in relation to planning and initiation of, as well as decisions and feedback on their PRN medication treatment. Methods: We retrieved data from patients' (n = 67) nursing documentation in a Finnish forensic psychiatric hospital in 2018. Data were analysed using statistical methods. Results: All patients were prescribed PRN, and they initiated half of the 8,626 PRN events identified, in a 1‐year period. Non‐pharmacological strategies were rarely (6%) documented, and most of them were initiated by staff (76%). Feedback on PRN was usually from a nurse's viewpoint (71%). Nurses' feedback was positive (80%) more often than patients' (50%). Discussion: Patient participation needs to be recognized throughout the PRN process. Future research could continue to explore patient participation in planning and evaluating their PRN medication. Implications for practice: Patients participate in PRN by requesting medication. Abstract: Introduction: People with mental illness are up to three times more likely to smoke and experience greater challenges and less success when trying to quit and therefore have higher risk of smoking‐related morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of evidence on successful interventions to reduce the smoking rates in people living with serve mental illness. A meta‐synthesis was undertaken to summarize the data from multiple studies to inform the development of future smoking cessation intervention studies. Methods: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase and CINAHL were searched in March 2017. A total of 965 titles and abstracts were screened for inclusion with 29 papers reviewed in full and 15 studies that met inclusion criteria. Included studies were assessed for quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool. Key data across studies were examined and compared, and a thematic analysis was conducted. Results: Analysis and synthesis developed five analytical themes: environmental and social context, living with a mental health illness, health awareness, financial awareness and provision of smoking cessation support. Themes generated the interpretive construct: “Whose role is it anyway?” which highlights tensions between staff perspectives on their role and responsibilities to providing smoking cessation support and support service users would like to receive. Relevance to mental health nursing: Routine smoking cessation training for mental health professionals and research on innovative smoking cessation interventions to support people living with mental illness are needed. The Cochrane tobacco group has not found sufficient direct evidence of existing evidence‐based interventions that have beneficial effect on smoking in people living with mental illness. Scales of met and unmet R/S care needs (range 0‒14) were regressed on the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI), Service Engagement Scale and Medication Adherence Report Scale. Ancova analyses were performed for the fourteen R/S care needs separately. Results: In the Christian clinic, met R/S care needs were associated with a higher WAI score (p =.001) and unmet R/S care needs, with a lower WAI score (p =.000). For the Secular clinic, the same trends were observed, but insignificant. Items with the strongest associations were conversations about religious distress with a nurse (p =.000) and a similar outlook on life with practitioner (p =.001) or nurse (p =.005). What is known on the subject?Distress screening amongst FGs is emphasized in worldwide studies, but existing general tools were found time‐consuming and sometimes inconvenient when using them amongst FGs of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia.The DT, a single‐item scale, was widely used to detect distress amongst FGs of cancer patients, showing good reliability, validity and discrimination power.The 21‐item Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS21) can identify distress in the general population and serve as a criterion to determine an optimal cut‐off score of the DT. What does the paper add to existing knowledge?: The DT presented good reliability, validity and discriminatory power amongst FGs of adults diagnosed with schizophrenia. A cut‐off score of six maximized sensitivity (77%) and specificity (76%). Over half of the FGs of adults diagnosed with schizophrenia reached this cut‐off score and experienced significant distress. Distress was higher in FGs of male patients, when FGs were parents, and for FGs whose educational background was primary school or below. Data analysis exposed a number of concepts and themes including collegiality and presence. These two concepts were seen to be so closely connected that the term collegiate presence was constructed. This paper explores the notion of collegiate presence and examines factors that affect this phenomenon between what are homogenous (nurses) but disparate cultural groups (emergency department nurses and mental health triage nurses) in a health-care organization. Findings indicate that culturally disparate groups are challenged to develop functional and collaborative working relationships without a deep understanding of, and appreciation for, each other's culture. Method: A national survey of registered mental health nurses was carried out using an online questionnaire which was disseminated by Research and Development departments. Results: A total of 504 questionnaires were returned, 245 of which had full data and further analysed. The mean score for the sample was 14.4 and only 21 participants attained a mark of >80%. Implications for Practice: Two out of three of our hypotheses (that length of experience and clinical banding are directly related to knowledge of antipsychotic medication side effects) were supported. Our study found many nurses have a suboptimal working knowledge of antipsychotic medication side effects which has the potential to compromise care. UK health policy has used the terms 'frailty' and 'complexity' synonymously but there is no common definition for either. Understanding these concepts is important if demand for health care created by the increasing number of older people in society is to be managed effectively. This paper explores some findings from a study into how mental health nurses who work with older people construct and operationalize the concept of 'age-related complexity'. Constructivist grounded theory was used. Audio-taped interviews were undertaken with 13 registered nurses and were analysed using a constant comparative method. This paper addresses the relationship between frailty and complexity, which was identified as a theme within the category 'dynamic complexity'. The findings suggest that nurses understand important differences between the two concepts. Frailty is exclusively used to describe physical states while complexity is a more encompassing term that has resonance and relevance in mental health services. Aim/question: We adapted two stigma‐related instruments in a sample of nursing students and examined change in scores after participation in an eight‐week preclinical psychiatry curriculum. Our goal was to identify stigma‐malleable opportunities that would inform refinements in future iterations of a preclinical psychiatry curriculum in nursing. Method: We made minor adaptations to the attitudes to psychiatry (ATP‐30) and the attitudes to mental illness (AMI) instruments. We invited first‐year nursing students to complete assessments at two time points: before and after completion of an eight‐week core course in preclinical psychiatry. Results: Seventy‐one students completed the assessment at both time points. ATP‐30 and three of its eight subscale scores improved by course's endpoint. By contrast, AMI scores did not change. Compared with medical student published norms, nursing students in our sample had higher (less stigmatized) average scores. Discussion: The ATP‐30 and the AMI can be easily adapted to a nursing student population and may prove useful in tracking specific anti‐stigma educational interventions. However, caregivers of children with disabilities (CCWDs) are underrepresented in empirical investigations and may have an increased risk of experiencing IPV and its consequences. Method: The present study estimated the prevalence of IPV victimization and examined the association between IPV and depression in a sample of CCWDs living in Nairobi, Kenya. Results: Nearly half (49.8%) of the participants experienced some form of IPV and more than half (51.8%) were at risk of depression. Participants reporting psychological and physical violence were 1.76 and 4.81 times more likely to be at risk for depression, respectively. Those experiencing a combination of physical and psychological violence were 4.85 times more likely to be at risk for depression. Discussion: Both men and women CCWDs are at an increased risk for IPV and depression. Social–cultural factors are also important in the prediction of depression risk and should be taken into account when working with CCWDs. Aim: The current study aimed to reduce this gap by exploring burnout, the perceived effectiveness of clinical supervision and ward environment. Method: In 2014, nursing staff working in a medium secure forensic psychiatric unit in the United Kingdom (N = 137) provided demographic information and completed the measures assessing: Burnout, clinical supervision and the ward environment. Results: Approximately 10% of nursing staff could be classed as "burnt‐out". The main predictors of burnout were age and ward environment. Clinical supervision had minimal association with burnout. Discussion: The current study sheds doubt on clinical supervision as a potential intervention for burnout and results appear comparable to research within other settings. The implications of the ward environment, supervision and burnout are discussed herein. Aim: This study aimed to explore the experiences and meanings of recovery for Swazi women living with schizophrenia. Methodology: Interpretive phenomenological analysis was used. Fifteen women were recruited from Swaziland National Psychiatric Hospital out‐patients' department, and face‐to‐face interviews were conducted. Introduction: Developing person‐centred recovery‐oriented care is a challenge in mental health systems, particularly psychiatric hospitals. Aim: To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices developed following recovery‐oriented training of nurses and other staff; to identify the benefits and challenges involved in the implementation of recovery‐oriented intervention in psychiatric wards. Method: A mixed‐methods study compared recovery knowledge, attitudes and practices of 37 mental health ward staff trained in recovery‐oriented intervention, against 35 staff not trained. Fifteen staff were interviewed about their experiences, and protocols were qualitatively analysed. Results: The quantitative outcomes partially confirmed positive changes in attitudes and some practices. Qualitative interviews complemented these findings, revealing greater use of a person‐centred approach and support for patient autonomy. However, we did not find differences between groups in quantitative outcomes pertaining to personal goals or providing individually tailored services. Discussion: This study validates the implementation of recovery training and practices in psychiatric settings, and identifies the challenges involved. We discuss psychiatric nurse conflicts in implementation in acute wards. Implications for practice: Our findings support the need for broader staff training in recovery‐oriented interventions. Aim: We explored the association between type and severity of aggressive behaviour as experienced by nursing staff and staff's burnout symptoms. In addition, the moderating roles of personality characteristics and emotional intelligence (EI) were studied. Moreover, the usefulness of ambulatory skin conductance assessments in detecting arousal related to burnout symptoms was studied. Method: A total of 114 forensic nursing staff members filled out questionnaires and wore an ambulatory device. Results: Experiencing physical aggression was positively associated with staff's burnout symptoms. Stress management skills, a subscale of EI, but not personality, moderated this relationship. Skin conductance was not associated with burnout symptoms. Remarkably, the association between aggression and burnout symptoms was highest for staff reporting a higher number of stress management skills. Discussion: Longitudinal research is necessary to establish causality between client aggression and staff burnout symptoms. In addition, further research is necessary on the validity of the aggression measure used in the current study. Implication for practice: Nursing staff who experience physical aggression frequently should receive social support for this, and staff who report high stress management skills should be monitored more carefully after having been confronted with aggression. Aim/question: To develop an in‐depth explanatory model about inappropriate prescribing of antipsychotics in dementia within care homes. Methods: Twenty‐eight participants from eight different professional groups with a role in shaping treatment decisions in dementia care were recruited and interviewed. The audio‐recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed using constructivist grounded theory. Results: When patients with dementia present with behavioural and psychological symptoms, the prescribing of antipsychotics allows the multitude of work in a care home to be managed; the effectiveness of antipsychotics is more perceptible than their side‐effects. This perceived usefulness strengthens beliefs that these medications ought to be prescribed again in future situations, generating a self‐fulfilling prophecy. Discussion: Our findings may partly explain why the launch of the national dementia strategy in England has been found not to have reduced antipsychotic prescribing in care homes. Implications for practice: Positive perceptions based on past experiences with antipsychotics should be challenged through future interventions that tackle inappropriate prescribing, for example using behaviour change techniques to better highlight adverse consequences of prescribing. Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Nursing students in the United States and China have reported inadequate preparedness for practice in mental health nursing. It is important to investigate nursing students’ mental health literacy levels for a better understanding of their practice readiness in mental health field upon completion of their education. Aim: This study was aimed at developing an understanding of American and Chinese nursing students’ mental health literacy regarding the effectiveness of specific interventions for managing depression and schizophrenia. Method: The “Australian National Mental Health Literacy Survey” was completed by a group of 310 nursing students including 152 Americans and 158 Chinese between April 2016 and April 2017 to compare students’ rated intervention options on two provided vignettes. Results: The two student groups reached consensus on many intervention options. However, the Chinese students showed more preference to occasional alcohol consumption and specialized therapies and the US students held less skepticism towards traditional practices as treatment options for depression and schizophrenia. Discussion and implications for practice: The findings support professional and psychosocial interventions in caring for patients with mental disorders. Results The results indicate that the participants described 'difficulty in forming a relationship, understanding the client, and estab lishing cooperation' among the primary reasons of difficulties. Discussion The findings of this study imply that the level of education, expertise, psychotherapy treatment and clinical supervision of MHWs all affect perceived difficulties and attitudes towards people with PD. They were also not familiar with utilizing research findings in improving their care of patients., Abstract Forensic nursing is a global and relatively young profession that combines nursing care and juridical processes. There are, however, significant differences in the qualifications of forensic nurses internationally. The aim of the study was to describe the professional competence profile of practising forensic nurses in Finland and to explore the effects of a 1-year further education programme on that competence profile. The data were collected in 2011-2012 using the Nurse Competence Scale comprising seven competence categories, and analysed using the software package SPSS version 19.0 ( SPSS, Inc., Armonk, NY, USA). The participants were 19 forensic nurses and their 15 head nurses. The assessed overall scores from both informant groups indicated a high level of competence across the seven categories. The nurses felt that the overall competence level had increased during the education programme. The increase seen by the head nurses was smaller. The less frequent competence items included utilization of research and involvement of family in care. It can be stated that the 1-year further education programme was effective in developing the nurses' competence profile and, in particular, affected their professional self-confidence. Accessible summary Heavy episodic drinking among adolescents is a growing concern in Korea., This paper presents risk factors for decision making about heavy episodic drinking among grades 7-12 students based on 2009 Korean national data., We expect these results to be useful in detecting susceptible groups for high-risk drinking., Abstract The main objective of this study was to identify the risk factors and develop a decision tree model of heavy episodic drinking (HED) among adolescents. Data were obtained from a representative nationwide Korean population. Nine variables (such as last 30 days smoking, school grade, sex, depression, school achievement, level of stress, region, and economic status) were found as risk factors of HED. On the highest level of the tree root, major classification rule was played by dividing based on the last 30 days smoking and school grades. These findings should be helpful for school and mental healthcare providers to detect Korean adolescents with high possibility of HED, which will aid in planning of healthcare interventions for at-risk adolescents. Females partnered with male-to-female transsexual persons reported reforming their sexual relations with their partners. They reported maintaining a heterosexual identity, yet reconceptualizing their relationships and sexuality to be situation-dependent. For example, language such as 'situational lesbian' was reported. The study findings also demonstrate that female sexuality within these relationships can range from cessation of sexual relations to a continuation of relations without disruption., Healthcare providers need to be aware of fluidity and diversity among sexuality and relationships, and allow for expression of an expansive range of relationships and/or sexual activity., Abstract This paper reports on a study examining sexuality in females who remain partnered with male-to-female transsexual persons. Participants' self-view and sexual fluidity following their partners' transition from man to woman is examined. Sixteen females participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews. An inductive process of data analysis was conducted, using the constant comparative method, an iterative process by which data are compared within and across subjects. Data were collected until thematic saturation was achieved. Four themes related to sexuality emerged: (1) questioning of sexual orientation; (2) sexual orientation categorization; (3) relational fluidity without sexual relations; and (4) relational fluidity with sexual relations. Participants maintained a heterosexual identity, yet modified their self-view to include an identity that reflected their reformed relationship. The majority of the respondents reported sexual lives that were active or evolving. Others remained in relationships that no longer included sexual activity. The study findings highlight the potential fluidity within the sexual and relational lives of females, and can enhance healthcare providers' preparedness and efficacy with diverse populations.
