The development of self-healing polymeric materials was inspired by biological systems wherein damage initiates an autonomic healing response and can automatically repair the internal cracks/ damages without the need for external intervention. This is a new and fascinating field of research that has the potential to improve service life of the materials. These have attracted the attention of many scientists/researchers due to their wide range of applications. The self-healing materials have been broadly classified in to two categories: (1) extrinsic self-healing materials, wherein, the repairing agent is pre-embedded in to the resin matrix and no human involvement is needed to start the healing process, and (2) intrinsic self-healing materials, which do not have an embedded healing agent and an external-stimuli is essential to initiate the healing process. The current review article summarizes a state-of-art in terms of self-healing ability of the polymeric materials. It also provides comprehensive comparison of healing efficiencies, advantages and challenges for the future development, and potential applications of such materials in numerous fields, such as aerospace, coatings and paints, electronics energy, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
