Neutron capture cross sections are one of the fundamental nuclear data in the study of the s (slow) process of nucleosynthesis. More interestingly, the competition between the capture and the decay rates in some unstable nuclei determines the local isotopic abundance pattern. Since decay rates are often sensible to temperature and electron density, the study of the nuclear properties of these nuclei can provide valuable constraints to the physical magnitudes of the nucleosynthesis stellar environment. Here we report on the capture cross section measurement of two thallium isotopes, 204Tl and 205Tl performed by the time-of-flight technique at the n TOF facility at CERN. At some particular stellar s-process environments, the decay of both nuclei is strongly enhanced, and determines decisively the abundance of two s-only isotopes of lead, 204Pb and 205Pb. The latter, as a long-lived radioactive nucleus, has potential use as a chronometer of the last s-process events that contributed to final solar isotopic abundances.

A method for absolute calibration of proportional counters for pulsed fast neutrons is presented. The method is based on the use of an isotopic standard source and development of a model for counting detected events from area of a signal compounded by single piled up neutron pulses. Effects of detection counting statistics and electrical background noise are also considered. The method is applied in detectors used for D-D neutron yield measurements in low emission plasma focus devices.

A Mach-Zehnder interferometer using a pulsed Nd-YAG laser (600mJ, 532nm, 8ns) was implemented to measure the electron density and the dimensions of the pinch column in two sub-kJ compact plasma focus devices operating at hundred joules (PF-400J) and tens of joules (PF-50J).

The presence of metallic deposition and oxides at the surface of insulators used in plasma focus discharges is expected to have a significant effect in the conditioning process that leads to neutrons and hard x-rays emissions. In this work, the atomic concentrations of the main elements present in these insulators are studied by energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analysis. Preliminary results are presented. Surface oxidation was observed after the conditioning process. A significant concentration of metallic deposition from the anode is observed after a working cycle of a thousand shots.

The silver counter neutron detector is revisited. The detector characterization methodology based on the use of an isotopic source is revised. The effect of the moderator geometry on the counting efficiency of the detector is experimentally studied. Preliminary results are presented.
