The solution from linear theory for the barotropic-to-baroclinic tidal energy conversion into vertical modes is validated with numerical simulations and analytical results. The main result is the translation of the traditional critical slope condition into a modewise condition on the topographic height only. Our findings are then used for estimates of the global M2 tidal conversion into the first 10 vertical modes in the open ocean (excluding the continental shelves and slopes). We observe a rapid increase with mode number of the fraction of the World Ocean where linear theory is invalid. In terms of conversion, which is highly variable in space, this corresponds to an even more rapid increase with mode number of the fraction of the converted energy that is strongly affected by nonlinear effects. Out of the 373.6 GW of the globally integrated conversion into modes 1–10, only 241.7 GW occur in locations where linear theory is valid. While it represents 95% for mode 1, this fraction rapidly drops with mode number to reach 27% for mode 10. Moreover, for the conversion into a single mode, we show that capping the linear solution at supercritical topography is inappropriate. Meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet can alter the continental shelf/slope circulation and cross-shelf freshwater fluxes and limit deep convection in adjacent basins through surface freshening. We explore the impacts on the West Greenland Current and eastern Labrador Sea with different vertical distributions of the meltwater forcing. In this study, we present the results from global coupled ocean/sea ice simulations, forced with atmospheric reanalysis, that are mesoscale eddy-active (∼2–3-km horizontal spacing) and eddy-permitting (∼6–7-km horizontal spacing) in the study region. We compare the West Greenland Current in mesoscale eddy-active and eddy-permitting without meltwater to highlight the role of small-scale features. The mesoscale eddy-active configuration is then used to assess the change in the eastern Labrador Sea when meltwater is added to the surface or vertically distributed to account for mixing within fjords. In both simulations with meltwater, the West Greenland and West Greenland Coastal Currents are faster than in the simulation with no meltwater; their mean surface speeds are the highest in the vertical distribution case. In the latter case, there is enhanced baroclinic conversion at the shelf break compared to the simulation with no meltwater. When meltwater is vertically distributed, there is an increase in baroclinic conversion at the shelf break associated with increased eddy kinetic energy. In addition, in the eastern Labrador Sea, the salinity is lower and the meltwater volume is greater when meltwater is vertically distributed. Therefore, the West Greenland Current is sensitive to how meltwater is added to the ocean with implications for the freshening of the Labrador Sea. Significance Statement: Our goal is to understand how the flux of freshwater across the West Greenland continental slope into the Labrador Sea is modified by meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet. We compare the simulations of the ocean that capture key dynamics along the West Greenland continental slope that have no meltwater, meltwater added to the ocean surface, and meltwater distributed vertically to represent the mixing within fjords. When meltwater is added, the currents along the continental slope are faster, with the greatest increase when meltwater is vertically distributed. In that case, there is enhanced freshening of the Labrador Sea because modified density gradients generate more eddies. The structure of the Antarctic Slope Current at the continental shelf is crucial in governing the poleward transport of warm water. Canyons on the continental slope may provide a pathway for warm water to cross the slope current and intrude onto the continental shelf underneath ice shelves, which can increase rates of ice shelf melting, leading to reduced buttressing of ice shelves, accelerating glacial flow and hence increased sea level rise. Observations and modeling studies of the Antarctic Slope Current and cross-shelf warm water intrusions are limited, particularly in the East Antarctica region. To explore this topic, an idealized configuration of the Antarctic Slope Current is developed, using an eddy-resolving isopycnal model that emulates the dynamics and topography of the East Antarctic sector. Warm water intrusions via canyons are found to occur in discrete episodes of large onshore flow induced by eddies, even in the absence of any temporal variability in external forcings, demonstrating the intrinsic nature of these intrusions to the slope current system. Canyon width is found to play a key role in modulating cross-shelf exchanges; warm water transport through narrower canyons is more irregular than transport through wider canyons. The intrinsically episodic cross-shelf transport is found to be driven by feedbacks between wind energy input and eddy generation in the Antarctic Slope Current. Improved understanding of the intrinsic variability of warm water intrusions can help guide future observational and modeling studies in the analysis of eddy impacts on Antarctic shelf circulation. Accurate parameterizations of eddy fluxes across prograde, buoyant shelf and slope currents are crucial to faithful predictions of the heat transfer and water mass transformations in high-latitude ocean environments in ocean climate models. In this work we evaluate several parameterization schemes of eddy buoyancy fluxes in predicting the mean state of prograde current systems using a set of coarse-resolution noneddying simulations, the solutions of which are compared against those of fine-resolution eddy-resolving simulations with nearly identical model configurations. It is found that coarse-resolution simulations employing the energetically constrained GEOMETRIC parameterization can accurately reconstruct the prograde mean flow state, provided that the suppression of eddy buoyancy diffusivity over the continental slope is accounted for. The prognostic subgrid-scale eddy energy budget in the GEOMETRIC parameterization scheme effectively captures the varying trend of the domain-wide eddy energy level in response to environmental changes, even though the energy budget is not specifically designed for a sloping-bottomed ocean. Local errors of the predicted eddy energy are present but do not compromise the predictive skill of the GEOMETRIC parameterization for prograde current systems. This work lays a foundation for improving the representation of prograde current systems in coarse-resolution ocean climate models. Significance Statement: The objective of this study is to evaluate different methods for predicting ocean volume transports caused by ocean mesoscale eddies across continental margins. This is important because these transports play a critical role in exchanges between coastal seas and open oceans, but cannot be resolved or well represented in ocean climate simulations. The scale-to-scale kinetic energy (KE) cascade induced by the nonlinear interaction among topography, the Kuroshio, and mesoscale eddies is systematically investigated in the coarse-graining framework based on simulated data from the well-validated Regional Ocean Model System. The KE transfer exhibits inhomogeneous spatial and temporal distributions and varies with length scale. During current–topography interaction, the KE transfers downscale across larger scales and reversely across smaller scales with an inherent separation scale of 150 km northeast of Taiwan, resulting in a significant positive net KE flux for mesoscale motions. The transfer around Suao Ridge is consistently downscaled with significant seasonal variation that is stronger in summer and weaker in winter. South of Suao Ridge, the transfer is one order of magnitude weaker and changes greatly with time. The cyclonic (anticyclonic) eddy weakens (enhances) KE transfer in most study areas. In particular, the cyclonic eddy reverses the transfer direction around Suao Ridge. The anticyclonic eddy triggers a significant bidirectional transfer south of Suao Ridge. Analyses show that the special arc-shaped topographic feature and northwestward Kuroshio intrusion current are responsible for the nature of bidirectional KE transfer northeast of Taiwan. The direction of mean current relative to the topography gradient determines the Rossby number magnitude and the KE transfer direction. The large-scale circulation determines the transfer intensity by changing the horizontal shear and barotropic instabilities. The KE transfer caused by nonlinear dynamics contributes significantly to the total anticyclonic eddy-induced net KE flux changes. In particular, the inverse KE cascade plays a key role in net KE flux changes in mesoscale motions east of Taiwan. Significance Statement: In this work, we clarify the scale-to-scale kinetic energy transfer east of Taiwan. Energy transfer varies in different subareas. It is bidirectional northeast of Taiwan, consistently downscale around Suao Ridge, and weak and variable south of Suao Ridge. These transfer characteristics are closely related to the direction of mean flow relative to the topography gradient. Mesoscale eddies can trigger bidirectional transfer and even reverse the transfer direction. The reverse cascade is as important as the forward cascade for the total mesoscale energy change. This study not only shows an example of KE cascade when strong currents pass through continental slope, sea ridge, and open ocean, but also is of great significance for studying the dynamical and ecological environment variation of marginal sea. Enhanced diapycnal mixing induced by the near-bottom breaking of internal waves is an essential component of the lower meridional overturning circulation. Despite its crucial role in the ocean circulation, tidally driven internal wave breaking is challenging to observe due to its inherently short spatial and temporal scales. We present detailed moored and shipboard observations that resolve the spatiotemporal variability of the tidal response over a small-scale bump embedded in the continental slope of Tasmania. Cross-shore tidal currents drive a nonlinear trapped response over the steep bottom around the bump. The observations are roughly consistent with two-dimensional high-mode tidal lee-wave theory. However, the alongshore tidal velocities are large, suggesting that the alongshore bathymetric variability modulates the tidal response driven by the cross-shore tidal flow. The semidiurnal tide and energy dissipation rate are correlated at subtidal time scales, but with complex temporal variability. Energy dissipation from a simple scattering model shows that the elevated near-bottom turbulence can be sustained by the impinging mode-1 internal tide, where the dissipation over the bump is O(1%) of the incident depth-integrated energy flux. Despite this small fraction, tidal dissipation is enhanced over the bump due to steep topography at a horizontal scale of O(1) km and may locally drive significant diapycnal mixing. Significance Statement: Near-bottom turbulent mixing is a key element of the global abyssal circulation. We present observations of the spatiotemporal variability of tidally driven turbulent processes over a small-scale topographic bump off Tasmania. The semidiurnal tide generates large-amplitude transient lee waves and hydraulic jumps that are unstable and dissipate the tidal energy. These processes are consistent with the scattering of the incident low-mode internal tide on the continental slope of Tasmania. Mesoscale eddy buoyancy fluxes across continental slopes profoundly modulate the boundary current dynamics and shelf–ocean exchanges but have yet to be appropriately parameterized via the Gent–McWilliams (GM) scheme in predictive ocean models. In this work, we test the prognostic performance of multiple GM variants in noneddying simulations of upwelling slope fronts that are commonly found along the subtropical continental margins. The tested GM variants range from a set of constant eddy buoyancy diffusivities to recently developed energetically constrained, bathymetry-aware diffusivities, whose implementation is augmented by an artificial neural network (ANN) serving to predict the mesoscale eddy energy based on the topographic and mean flow quantities online. In addition, an ANN is employed to parameterize the cross-slope eddy momentum flux (EMF) that maintains a barotropic flow field analogous to that in an eddy-resolving model. Our tests reveal that noneddying simulations employing the bathymetry-aware forms of the Rhines scale–based scheme and GEOMETRIC scheme can most accurately reproduce the heat contents and along-slope baroclinic transports as those in the eddy-resolving simulations. Further analyses reveal certain degrees of physical consistency in the ANN-inferred eddy energy, which tends to grow (decay) as isopycnal slopes are steepened (flattened), and in the parameterized EMF, which exhibits the correct strength of shaping the flow baroclinicity if a bathymetry-aware GM variant is jointly used. These findings provide a recipe of GM variants for use in noneddying simulations with continental slopes and highlight the potential of machine learning techniques to augment physics-based mesoscale eddy parameterization schemes. Significance Statement: This study evaluates the predictive skill of parameterization schemes of water mass transports induced by ocean mesoscale eddies across continental slopes. It is well known that strong low-mode internal tides generated in Luzon Strait propagate westward to impinge continental slopes in the northeastern South China Sea (SCS). The reflection and scattering of these internal tides including diurnal and semidiurnal components on the slopes are quantitatively investigated using two sets of mooring data and a linear internal tide model with realistic topography and stratification. Flux reflections computed from mooring data collected on the continental slopes are consistent with the linear model. Based on the results of the observations and simulations, a map of low-mode internal tide reflection and scattering coefficients along the continental margin in the northeastern SCS is revealed. On average, diurnal internal tides lose 38% of their energy to high modes (≥mode 4) that are assumed to dissipate on the slopes, transmit 28% onto the continental shelf, and reflect 31% back to the deep ocean. On the contrary, most of the semidiurnal energy (89%) transmits onto the continental shelf, and only 11% is scattered to high modes (7%) and reflected back to the deep ocean (4%). For diurnal internal tides, a large fraction of energy that is scattered to high modes and reflected back to the deep sea can be attributed to the critical–supercritical slopes, while the weak reflection for the semidiurnal energy is due to the subcritical slopes. These quantitative descriptions for evolutions of low-mode internal tides incident to the slopes provide an energy budget map on the continental slopes in the northeastern SCS. Observations from a Seaglider, two pressure-sensor-equipped inverted echo sounders (PIESs), and a thermistor chain (T-chain) mooring were used to determine the waveform and timing of internal solitary waves (ISWs) over the continental slope east of Dongsha Atoll. The Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) and Dubreil–Jacotin–Long (DJL) equations supplemented the data from repeated profiling by the glider at a fixed position (depth ∼1017 m) during 19–24 May 2019. The glider-recorded pressure perturbations were used to compute the rarely measured vertical velocity (w) with a static glider flight model. After removing the internal tide–caused vertical velocity, the w of the eight mode-1 ISWs ranged from −0.35 to 0.36 m s−1 with an uncertainty of ±0.005 m s−1 due to turbulent oscillations and measurement error. The horizontal velocity profiles, wave speeds, and amplitudes of the eight ISWs were further derived from the KdV and DJL equations using the glider-observed w and potential density profiles. The mean speed of the corresponding ISW from the PIES deployed at ∼2000 m depth to the T-chain moored at 500 m depth and the 19°C isotherm displacement computed from the T-chain were used to validate the waveform derived from KdV and DJL. The validation suggests that the DJL equation provides reasonably representative wave speed and amplitude for the eight ISWs compared to the KdV equation. Stand-alone glider data provide near-real-time hydrography and vertical velocities for mode-1 ISWs and are useful for characterizing the anatomy of ISWs and validating numerical simulations of these waves. Significance Statement: Internal solitary waves (ISWs), which vertically displace isotherms by approximately 100 m, considerably affect nutrient pumping, turbulent mixing, acoustic propagation, underwater navigation, bedform generation, and engineering structures in the ocean. A complete understanding of their anatomy and dynamics has many applications, such as predicting the timing and position of mode-1 ISWs and evaluating their environmental impacts. To improve our understanding of these waves and validate the two major theories based on the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) and Dubreil–Jacotin–Long (DJL) equations, the hydrography data collected from stand-alone, real-time profiling of an autonomous underwater vehicle (Seaglider) have proven to be useful in determining the waveform of these transbasin ISWs in deep water. The solutions to the DJL equation show good agreement with the properties of mode-1 ISWs obtained from the rare in situ data, whereas the solutions to the KdV equation underestimate these properties. Using observations and theoretical models, a substantial topographic modulation on the quasigeostrophic (QG) dynamics, which results in a primary surface mode distinct from the classic first baroclinic (BC1) mode with a flat bottom, is revealed in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). In contrast to open oceans, the surface-intensified modes decay downward more rapidly over the continental slope of the NSCS, with a mean e-folding scale of approximately 1/5 of water depth. The subinertial flow variability appears to be vertically incoherent, with planetary and topographic Rossby waves dominating in the upper and deep layers, respectively. With a larger deformation radius (Rd), the surface-mode Rossby waves propagate at a phase speed ~1.5 times of that of the BC1 mode. Moreover, the modal structures can be substantially modified by seasonal NSCS circulation, which is significantly enhanced over continental slopes. Analysis of the triad interactions further implies that the short waves tend to transfer energy to larger scales via the inverse cascade and only those with wavelengths larger than Rd ≈ 70 km in the NSCS can persist because of a slower unstable growth rate but a higher fraction of upscale energy transfer. The present theory excludes the bottom-trapped mode, which is closely associated with topographic Rossby waves and is observed to be significant in the abyssal NSCS. Hence, a complete normalmode basis for any QG state is required for a study that focuses on flow variability throughout the water column. Antarctic Bottom Water is primarily formed via overflows of dense shelf water (DSW) around the Antarctic continental margins. The dynamics of these overflows therefore influence the global abyssal stratification and circulation. Previous studies indicate that dense overflows can be unstable, energizing topographic Rossby waves (TRW) over the continental slope. However, it remains unclear how the wavelength and frequency of the TRWs are related to the properties of the overflowing DSW and other environmental conditions, and how the TRW properties influence the downslope transport of DSW. This study uses idealized high-resolution numerical simulations to investigate the dynamics of overflow-forced TRWs and the associated downslope transport of DSW. It is shown that the propagation of TRWs is constrained by the geostrophic along-slope flow speed of the DSW and by the dynamics of linear plane waves, allowing the wavelength and frequency of the waves to be predicted a priori. The rate of downslope DSW transport depends nonmonotonically on the slope steepness: steep slopes approximately suppress TRW formation, resulting in steady, frictionally dominated DSW descent. For slopes of intermediate steepness, the overflow becomes unstable and generates TRWs, accompanied by interfacial form stresses that drive DSW downslope relatively rapidly. For gentle slopes, the TRWs lead to the formation of coherent eddies that inhibit downslope DSW transport. These findings may explain the variable properties of TRWs observed in oceanic overflows, and they imply that the rate at which DSW descends to the abyssal ocean depends sensitively on the manifestation of TRWs and/or nonlinear eddies over the continental slope. Breaking internal tides contribute substantially to small-scale turbulent mixing in the ocean interior and hence to maintaining the large-scale overturning circulation. How much internal tide energy is available for ocean mixing can be estimated by using semianalytical methods based on linear theory. Until recently, a method resolving the horizontal direction of the internal waves generated by conversion of the barotropic tide was lacking. We here present the first global application of such a method to the first vertical mode of the principal lunar semidiurnal internal tide. We also show that the effect of supercritical slopes on the modally decomposed internal tides is different than previously suggested. To deal with this the continental shelf and the shelf slope are masked in the global computation. The global energy conversion obtained agrees roughly with the previous results by Falahat et al. if the mask is applied to their result, which decreases their energy conversion by half. Thus, around half of the energy conversion obtained by their linear calculations occurs at continental slopes and shelves, where linear theory tends to break down. The barotropic-to-baroclinic energy flux at subcritical slopes away from the continental margins is shown to vary substantially with direction depending on the shape and orientation of topographic obstacles and the direction of the local tidal currents. Taking this additional information into account in tidal mixing parameterizations could have important ramifications for vertical mixing and water mass properties in global numerical simulations. The sea surface expressions of Mediterranean Water eddies, known as "meddies," are observed in satellite data, and their main characteristics are measured. Satellite altimeter observations of surface expressions are detected over the meddies observed in situ using the MEDTRANS meddy dataset (1950–2013). In this study 209 observed meddy cores in the North Atlantic Ocean, selected over the period of the 22 years of sea surface height measurements with satellite altimetry (1993–2013), were analyzed. Results show relatively good agreement between the theoretical estimates of the meddy surface signals as reported by Bashmachnikov and Carton and the measured surface expressions. It was found that, on average, the theoretical results underestimate the measured sea surface elevations of the meddy surface expressions by a factor of 2. Although the variability of the measured expressions is reasonably well described by the combination of meddy core and the ocean background parameters of the theoretical expression, we cannot define a single individual parameter of the meddy core, which chiefly shapes the magnitude of the meddy surface signal. Interestingly, the overall distribution of characteristics of meddy surface expressions in the Atlantic shows that the sea level anomalies formed by meddies intensify westward, growing both in magnitude and radius. This opposes the expected theoretical decrease of meddy surface signals due to a known progressive decay of the meddy cores with distance from their generation region at the Iberian continental slope. This observed tendency is attributed to meddy interaction with the upper-ocean currents and other eddies (in particular in the region of the North Atlantic Current and Azores Current) that are not considered by the theory. The winter–summer transition in the southern South China Sea (SCS) western boundary current (WBC) is studied. Two categories have been identified. In case 1, the southern SCS WBC transition in the lower layer (below the thermocline) lags that in the upper layer (above the thermocline). In case 2, there is no transition lag at full depth. In both categories, the geostrophic balance dominates the transition. In case 1, the upper layer geostrophic balance is dominated by the sea surface height pressure gradient (SSHPG) and Coriolis forcing during southern SCS WBC transition. Therefore, there is no transition lag with depth in the upper layer. Below the thermocline layer, the competition between the SSHPG and the density pressure gradient (DPG) determines the transition. During the transition, the amplitudes of the SSHPG and DPG are basically equivalent. The SSHPG needs time to develop sufficiently larger than the DPG. Therefore, the transition in the deeper layer significantly lags that in the shallower layer. The reversal of the SSHPG is mainly attributed to the change in the basin-scale wind stress curl over the southern SCS. The change in the DPG is mainly associated with the cooling of the water along the western continental slope, which is induced by upwelling. In case 2, there is no cooling along the western continental slope, and then the amplitude of the DPG is always far smaller than that of the SSHPG. Responding to the change in the SSHPG, the southern SCS WBC transition behaves consistently at full depth. Significance Statement: We have a comprehensive understanding of the South China Sea (SCS) circulation patterns in winter and summer. However, their seasonal transitions remain unclear, and a better understanding of them is potentially helpful for improving ocean circulation modeling and prediction. This paper focuses on the winter–summer transition in the SCS western boundary current (WBC). Above the thermocline (∼100 m), the transition behaves consistently in the vertical direction and is controlled by the conversion of the sea surface height–induced pressure gradient. Below the thermocline, the transition in the deeper layer of the WBC significantly lags that in the shallower layer of the WBC, which is associated with the competition between the SSH-induced pressure gradient and the density-induced pressure gradient at the sea surface. Coastal trapped waves (CTWs) transport energy along coastlines and drive coastal currents and upwelling. CTW modes are nonorthogonal when frequency is treated as the eigenvalue, preventing the separation of modal energy fluxes and quantification of longshore topographic scattering. Here, CTW modes are shown to be orthogonal with respect to energy flux (but not energy) when the longshore wavenumber is the eigenvalue. The modal evolution equation is a simple harmonic oscillator forced by longshore bathymetric variability, where downstream distance is treated like time. The energy equation includes an expression for modal topographic scattering. The eigenvalue problem is carefully discretized to produce numerically orthogonal modes, allowing CTW amplitudes, energy fluxes, and generation to be precisely quantified in numerical simulations. First, a spatially uniform K1 longshore velocity is applied to a continental slope with a Gaussian bump in the coastline. Mode-1 CTW generation increases quadratically with the amplitude of the bump and is maximum when the bump's length of coastline matches the natural wavelength of the CTW mode, as predicted by theory. Next, a realistic K1 barotropic tide is applied to the Oregon coast. The forcing generates mode-1 and mode-2 CTWs with energy fluxes of 6 and 2 MW, respectively, which are much smaller than the 80 MW of M2 internal-tide generation in this region. CTWs also produce 1-cm sea surface displacements along the coast, potentially complicating the interpretation of future satellite altimetry. Warm deep water intrusion over the Antarctic continental shelves threatens the Antarctic ice sheet stability by enhancing the basal melting of ice shelves. In East Antarctica, the Antarctic Slope Current (ASC), along with the Antarctic Slope Front (ASF), acts as a potential vorticity barrier to prevent the warm modified Circumpolar Deep Water (mCDW) from ventilating the cold and fresh shelf. However, mCDW onshore transport is still observed within certain shelf regions, such as submarine troughs running perpendicular to the continental shelf. This study focuses on the dynamic mechanisms governing mCDW intrusion within a submarine trough over the fresh shelf regions, East Antarctica. Based on an idealized eddy-resolving coupled ocean–ice shelf model, two high-resolution process-oriented numerical experiments are conducted to reveal the mechanisms responsible for the mCDW onshore transport. Three dynamic mechanisms governing cross-slope mCDW intrusion are identified: 1) the bottom pressure torque, 2) the topography beta spiral, and 3) the topography Rossby waves. These three mechanisms simultaneously govern the mCDW intrusion together. The bottom pressure torque plays a leading role in driving the time-mean onshore flow whose vertical structure is determined by the topography beta spiral, while the topography Rossby waves contribute to the high-frequency oscillations in the onshore volume and heat transport. The simulated spatial distribution and seasonality of mCDW intrusion qualitatively coincide with the observed mCDW intrusion over fresh shelf regions, East Antarctica. The Antarctic Slope Current (ASC) circumnavigates the Antarctic continent following the continental slope and separating the waters on the continental shelf from the deeper offshore Southern Ocean. Water mass exchanges across the continental slope are critical for the global climate as they impact the global overturning circulation and the mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet via basal melting. Despite the ASC's global importance, little is known about its spatial and subannual variability, as direct measurements of the velocity field are sparse. Here, we describe the ASC in a global eddying ocean–sea ice model and reveal its large-scale spatial variability by characterizing the continental slope using three regimes: the surface-intensified ASC, the bottom-intensified ASC, and the reversed ASC. Each ASC regime corresponds to a distinct classification of the density field as previously introduced in the literature, suggesting that the velocity and density fields are governed by the same leading-order dynamics around the Antarctic continental slope. Only the surface-intensified ASC regime has a strong seasonality. However, large temporal variability at a range of other time scales occurs across all regimes, including frequent reversals of the current. We anticipate our description of the ASC's spatial and subannual variability will be helpful to guide future studies of the ASC aiming to advance our understanding of the region's response to a changing climate. The nominal spatial distribution of diapycnal mixing in the South China Sea (SCS) is obtained with Thorpe-scale analysis from 2004 to 2020. The inferred dissipation rate ε and diapycnal diffusivity Kz between 100 and 1500 m indicated that the strongest mixing occurred in the Luzon Strait and Dongsha Plateau regions, with ε ~ 3.0 × 10−8 W kg−1 (εmax = 5.3 × 10−6 W kg−1) and Kz ~ 3.5 × 10−4 m2 s−1 (Kzmax = 4.2 × 10−2 m2 s−1). The weakest mixing occurred in the thermocline of the central basin, with ε ~ 6.2 × 10−10 W kg−1 and Kz ~ 3.7 × 10−6 m2 s−1. The ε and Kz in the continental slope indicated that the mixing in the northern part [O(10−8) W kg−1 and O(10−4) m2 s−1, respectively] was comparatively stronger than that in the Xisha and Nansha regions [O(10−9) W kg−1 and O(10−5) m2 s−1, respectively]. The Kz in the continental slope region (200–2000 m) decayed at a closed rate from the ocean bottom to the main thermocline when the measured depth D was normalized by the ocean depth H as D/H, whether in the shallow or deep oceans. The diapycnal diffusivity was parameterized as Kz = 3.3 × 10−4[1 + (1 − D/H)/0.22]−2 − 6.0 × 10−6 m2 s−1. The vertically integrated energy dissipation was nominally 15.8 mW m−2 for all data and 25.6 mW m−2 for data at stations H < 2000 m. This was about one order of magnitude higher than that in the open oceans (3.0–3.3 mW m−2), which confirmed the active mixing state in the SCS. Significance Statement: Diapycnal mixing (mixing across surfaces of constant density) is a dominant process in the ocean. It can affect ocean circulation and climate change. The South China Sea (SCS) is known as a strongly mixed marginal sea, but little research has been done on the SCS as a whole, and relatively little attention has been given to its central and southern regions. This study aimed to explore the nominal spatial variability of mixing in the entire SCS using Thorpe-scale analysis. Our study showed that the diapycnal mixing was stronger in the continental slope than in the central basin and that it followed a decay model from the bottom up in the region of the continental slope.
