Electrostatic interaction of the solvent with the solute and fluctuations of the solvent configurations may make excitation energies of the solute different from those in the gas phase. These effects may dominate photoinduced or chemical reaction dynamics in solution systems and can be observed as shifts or broadening of peaks in absorption spectra. In this work, the nitrogen K-edge X-ray absorption spectra were measured for pyridazine in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. The ultraviolet and X-ray absorption spectra of pyridazine in aqueous solution, as well as those in the gas phase, were then calculated with models based on the algebraic-diagrammatic construction through second order [ADC(2)] with the resolution-of-identity (RI) approximation and compared with the spectra obtained in experiments. For aqueous solution, explicit local solvation structures were extracted from an ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) trajectory of pyridazine in bulk water, and RI-ADC(2) was combined with the conductor-like screening model (COSMO). The experimental absorption spectra of pyridazine in aqueous solution were reproduced with good accuracy by theoretical treatment of an ensemble containing the explicit local solvation structures of pyridazine with relevant water molecules combined with the COSMO solvation model of water for long-range solvation.

Hydrogen abstraction is one of the crucial initial key steps in the combustion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. For an accurate theoretical prediction of heterogeneous combustion processes, larger systems need to be treated as compared to pure gas phase reactions. We address here the question on how transferable activation and reaction energies computed for small molecular models are to larger polyaromatics. The approximate transferability of energy contributions is a key assumption for multiscale modeling approaches. To identify efficient levels of accuracy, we start with accurate coupled-cluster and density functional theory (DFT) calculations for different sizes of polyaromatics. More approximate methods as the reactive force-field ReaxFF and the extended semi-empirical tight binding (xTB) methods are then benchmarked against these data sets in terms of reaction energies and equilibrium geometries. Furthermore, we analyze the role of bond-breaking and relaxation energies, vibrational contributions, and post-Hartree-Fock correlation corrections on the reaction, and for the activation energies, we analyze the validity of the Bell-Evans-Polanyi and Hammond principles. First, we find good transferability for this process and that the predictivity of small models at high theoretical levels is way superior than any approximate method can deliver. Second, ReaxFF can serve as a qualitative exploration method, whereas GFN2-xTB in combination with GFN1-xTB appears as a favorable tool to bridge between DFT and ReaxFF so that we propose a multimethod scheme with employing ReaxFF, GFN1/GFN2-xTB, DFT, and coupled cluster to cope effectively with such a complex reactive system.

We have computed barrier heights of 71.8 +/- 2.0 and 216.4 +/- 2.0 kJ mol(-1) for the reactions CH4 + CH3* --> CH3* + CH4 and CH4 + CH3* --> H* + C2H6, respectively, using explicitly correlated coupled cluster theory with singles and doubles combined with standard coupled cluster theory with up to connected quadruple excitations. Transition-state theory has been used to compute the respective reaction rate constants in the temperature interval of 250-1500 K. The computed rates for the reaction to ethane are orders of magnitude slower than those used in the mechanism of Norinaga and Deutschmann (Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 2007, 46, 3547.) for the modeling of the chemical vapor deposition of pyrolytic carbon.

We study the ground-state structures and singlet- and triplet-excited states of the nucleic acid bases by applying the coupled cluster model CC2 in combination with a resolution-of-the-identity approximation for electron interaction integrals. Both basis set effects and the influence of dynamic electron correlation on the molecular structures are elucidated; the latter by comparing CC2 with Hartree-Fock and Møller-Plesset perturbation theory to second order. Furthermore, we investigate basis set and electron correlation effects on the vertical excitation energies and compare our highest-level results with experiment and other theoretical approaches. It is shown that small basis sets are insufficient for obtaining accurate results for excited states of these molecules and that the CC2 approach to dynamic electron correlation is a reliable and efficient tool for electronic structure calculations on medium-sized molecules.

Excited-state reaction paths and the corresponding energy profiles of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazole (TIN-H) have been determined with the CC2 (simplified singles-and-doubles coupled-cluster) ab initio method. Hydrogen transfer along the intramolecular hydrogen bond, torsion of the aromatic rings and pyramidization of the central nitrogen atom are identified as the most relevant photochemical reaction coordinates. The keto-type planar S(1) state reached by barrierless intramolecular hydrogen transfer is found to be unstable with respect to torsion. The latter mode, together with a moderate pyramidization of the central nitrogen atom, provides barrierless access to a S(1)-S(0) conical intersection. Only the pi-type orbitals of the aromatic rings are involved in the open-shell structures. The S(1)-S(0) conical intersection, which occurs for perpendicular geometry of the aromatic rings, is a pure biradical. From the conical intersection, a barrierless reaction path steers the system back to the enol-type minimum of the S(0) potential-energy surface, thus closing the photocycle. This photophysical pathway accounts for the remarkable photostability of the molecule.

TDDFT and RI-CC2 calculations have been performed on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer in malonaldehyde, o-hydroxybenzaldehyde, salicylic acid, 7-hydroxy-1-indanone, and 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole. Vertical and adiabatic excitation energies have been computed for the npi and pipi states. Overall, we have found that both RI-CC2 and TDDFT methods are good candidates for the description of ESIPT potential energy surfaces. Proton transfer (PT) curves have been computed for both excited states. An essentially barrierless and very shallow energy profile has been found for the pi pi* state. For the n pi* state the keto minimum is more pronounced than for the pi pi* state and, depending on the case, energy barriers ranging from values <0.1 eV up to 0.5 eV were found. From the computed PT curves we conclude that extended crossing regions between the two excited states will occur.
