Understanding factors that underpin the signs and magnitudes of electron spin-spin couplings in biradicaloids, especially those that are integrated into highly delocalized electronic structures, promises to inform the design of molecular spintronic systems. Using steady-state and variable temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, we examine spin dynamics in symmetric, strongly π-conjugated bis[(porphinato)copper] (bis[PCu]) systems and probe the roles played by atom-specific macrocycle spin density, porphyrin-to-porphyrin linkage topology, and orbital symmetry on the magnitudes of electronic spin-spin couplings over substantial Cu-Cu distances. These studies examine the following: (i) meso- to -meso -linked bis[PCu] systems having oligoyne spacers, (ii) meso- to -meso -bridged bis[PCu] arrays in which the PCu centers are separated by a single ethynyl unit or multiple 5,15-diethynyl(porphinato)zinc(II) units, and (iii) the corresponding β-to-β-bridged bis[PCu] structures. EPR data show that, for β-to-β-bridged systems and meso- to -meso -linked bis[PCu] structures having oligoyne spacers, a through σ-bond coupling mechanism controls the average exchange interaction ( J avg ] versus Cu-Cu σ-bond separation number of ∼0.115 per bond, half as large as for these other compositions, congruent with the importance of π-mediated spin-spin coupling. These disparities derive from effects that trace their origin to the nature of the macrocycle-macrocycle linkage topology and the relative energy of the Cu d J avg ] versus Cu-Cu σ-bond separation number of ∼0.115 per bond, half as large as for these other compositions, congruent with the importance of π-mediated spin-spin coupling. These disparities derive from effects that trace their origin to the nature of the macrocycle-macrocycle linkage topology and the relative energy of the Cu d x 2 - y 2 singly occupied molecular orbital within the frontier orbital manifold of these electronically delocalized structures. This work provides insight into approaches to tune the extent of spin exchange interactions and distance-dependent electronic spin-spin coupling magnitudes in rigid, highly conjugated biradicaloids.

The proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction between the bpz-based photoexcited (3)MLCT state of [Ru(II)(bpy)(2)(bpz)](2+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpz = 2,2'-bipyrazine) and a series of substituted hydroquinones (H(2)Q) has been studied by transient absorption (TA) and time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy at X-band. When the reaction is carried out in a CH(3)CN/H(2)O mixed solvent system with unsubstituted hydroquinone, the neutral semiquinone radical (4a) and its conjugate base, the semiquinone radical anion (4b), are both observed. Variation of the acid strength in the solvent mixture allows the acid/base dependence of the PCET reaction to be investigated. In solutions with very low acid concentrations, TREPR spectra exclusively derived from radical anion 4b are observed, while at very high acid concentrations, the spectrum is assigned to the protonated structure 4a. At intermediate acid concentrations, either a superposition of spectra is observed (slow exchange between 4a and 4b) or substantial broadening in the TREPR spectrum is observed (fast exchange between 4a and 4b). Variation of substituents on the H(2)Q ring substantially alter this acid/base dependence and provide a means to investigate electronic effects on both the ET and PT components of the PCET process. The TA results suggest a change in mechanism from PCET to direct ET quenching in strongly basic solutions and with electron withdrawing groups on the H(2)Q ring system. Changing the ligand on the Ru complex also alters the acid/base dependence of the TREPR spectra through a series of complex equilibria between protonated and deprotonated hydroquinone radicals and anions. The relative intensities of the signals from radical 4a versus 4b can be rationalized quantitatively in terms of these equilibria and the relevant pK(a) values. An observed equilibrium deuterium isotope effect supports the conclusion that the post-PCET HQ(•)/Q(•-) equilibrium is the most important in determining the 4a/4b ratio at early delay times.

X-band time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra of three flexible biradicals of varying chain length and structure were obtained in liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) solutions and compared to conventional solvents. For C16 acyl-alkyl biradical 1a, an average spin exchange interaction between the radical centers, J(avg), was obtained by spectral simulation using a simple model for spin-correlated radical pairs (SCRPs) and a small amount of T2 relaxation from a previously established J modulation mechanism. A large solvent effect on J(avg) was observed for the first time, varying by almost 1 order of magnitude from CO2 (J(avg) = -120 +/- 10 MHz) to heavy mineral oil (-11 +/- 3 MHz) for 1a. For C15 bis(alkyl) biradical 1b, spectra obtained under supercritical conditions are only slightly different from those detected in liquid CO2 but differ from spectra taken in benzene. For C10 acyl-alkyl biradical 2a, more emissive spin polarization due to S-T- mixing is observed in CO2 than in benzene. These results are discussed in terms of solvent properties such as dielectric constant, viscosity, and specific interactions. Both chain dynamics and changes to the equilibrium distribution of end-to-end distances can alter J(avg) and the observed ratio of S-T0 to S-T- mixing; however, faster chain dynamics is concluded to be the most likely cause of the observed effects in these systems.

We report the first experimental study of chemically induced electron spin polarization (CIDEP) processes in low magnetic fields for spin-correlated radical pairs (SCRPs) in micellar environments. Photoexcitation of (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) diphenylphosphine oxide (TMBDPO) leads to the radical pair comprised of acyl radical 1 and phosphonyl radical 2. The spin polarization, which is very strong in free solution even at zero field, was detected using L-band time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy with specially modified resonators. The mechanism of formation and decay of low field CIDEP in SCRPs is presented and discussed. The prominent difference between low and high field spectra in micelles is the absence of anti-phase structure for radical 2 with HFI a > B0. This feature is consistent with the proposed polarization mechanism and theoretical predictions.

Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to probe energy transfer from aromatic photoexcited triplet states to azo compounds in liquid solution. The observation of chemically induced dynamic electron spin polarization in the spectra gives precise information regarding the spin physics and mechanism of the energy transfer process. The substrate size is varied by altering the chain length of alkyl chains covalently attached to the azo compounds via ester or amide linkages. The solvent dependence of the energy transfer process is also investigated. The results are discussed in terms of Dexter and Förster mechanisms for energy transfer, the properties of the excited states, and the diffusive properties of the molecules in the solvents of interest. Decomposition rate studies and fluorescence measurements are also reported.

Photolysis of aqueous kynurenine (KN) solutions results in the formation of triplet kynurenine TKN. In low pH solutions, triplet formation occurs with almost 100% efficiency, while in neutral solutions the triplet quantum yield is PhiT = 0.018 +/- 0.004. The dissociation constant of TKN, which is attributed to deprotonation of the anilino group, has a pKa value of 4.7. Similar triplet absorption spectra were obtained under direct and acetone-sensitized photolysis. The large difference in quantum yields as a function of pH is attributed to excited-state properties of the first excited singlet state of KN. The rate constant quenching for TKN by oxygen is kq = 2 x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1).
