A 23Na solid-state NMR (SSNMR) study of two sodium lariat ether complexes, in which a sodium cation interacts with an indolyl group that models the side chain of tryptophan is described. It is seen that the observed shielded isotropic chemical shifts are associated with the presence of cation-[pi] interaction.

Research is done on the large known chemical shift (CS) range for boron and the large number of (super 11B) NMR studies of glasses, no boron CS tensors were characterized to date. In conclusion, the combination of experimental and theoretical results provides the orientation of the CS and electric field gradient tensors in the molecular framework.

Research is done on the dipolar-chemical shift (CS) method, which has been applied to examine the carboxyl-methylene carbon isolated spin pair in phenylacetic-(super 13)C(sub 2) acid and potassium hydrogen bisphenylacetate-(super 13)C(sub 2). Phenylacetic-(super 13)C(sub 2) acid is proposed as a setup sample for rotational resonance and other homonuclear dipolar recoupling experiments.

Be(acac)2 was studied in the solid state using a 9Be NMR method.

Solid-state potassium-39 NMR spectra of two potassium complexes of crown-ether-based organic ligands are used for analyzing the [super 39]K quandrupolar and chemical shift tensors. The results have highlighted the potential of ultrahigh-field potassium-39 solid-state NMR spectroscopy and the anisotropy of the potassium chemical shift (CS) tensor, when organic and diatomic systems are considered.

The motion of hexamethylborazine, I, in the solid state is investigated and the NMR interactions of fundamental interest using various multinuclear magnetic resonance techniques as well as the ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. High-level ab initio and density functional theory calculations provide values of the boron electric field gradient (EFG) tensor and the boron and nitrogen magnetic shielding tensors for a rigid molecule of I.

Oxygen-17-enriched triphenylphosphine oxide and three of its halogen-bonded cocrystals featuring 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene and 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene as halogen bond donors have been characterized by 31 P and 17 O single-crystal NMR spectroscopy. Single-crystal NMR allows for the measurement of not only the magnitudes of various NMR interaction tensors, but also their orientations relative to the crystal lattice and therefore relative to the halogen bonds themselves. 31 P chemical shift tensors, 17 O chemical shift tensors, 17 O quadrupolar coupling tensors, and 31 P- 17 O indirect nuclear spin-spin ( J ) coupling tensors are reported here for P═O···I halogen bonds. The angular deviations in the directions of the pseudo-unique components of the 31 P chemical shift tensors, the 17 O chemical shift tensors, and the 17 O quadrupolar coupling tensors from the direction of the oxygen-iodine halogen bond correlate with the deviations in linearity of the P═O···I halogen bond. There is also a clear decrease in anisotropy and an increase in asymmetry of the J ( 31 P, 17 O) coupling tensors attributable to the formation of iodine-oxygen halogen bonds. The small but quantifiable changes in the tensors are consistent with the weak nature of these halogen bonds relative to the P═O motif. Overall, this work establishes single-crystal NMR as a novel probe of halogen bonds in solids. Analysis of the results has provided insights into the correlations between the magnitude and orientation of various NMR interaction tensors and the local geometry of the halogen bond. Gauge-including projector-augmented wave computations corroborate the experimental findings.

Pnictogen (or pnicogen) bonding is an attractive interaction between the electrophilic region of group 15 elements (N, P, As, Sb, Bi) and a nucleophile. This interaction for which unique applications in catalysis have recently been uncovered continues to gain popularity. Here, we investigate a series of pnictogen-bonded cocrystals based on SbF 3 and SbCl 3 , prepared via mechanochemical ball milling, with 121/123 Sb ( I = 5 / 2 and 7 / 2 , respectively) nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy. Observed NQR frequency shifts upon cocrystallization are on the order of 0.1 to 10 MHz and are clearly diagnostic of the formation of pnictogen bonds to antimony. Further evidence for pnictogen bonding is obtained by complementary 13 C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR experiments. DFT calculations of NMR parameters as well as natural localized molecular orbital analyses support the experimental findings and elucidate the electronic origins of the experimental NQR frequency shifts. This work provides insights into the changes in the antimony quadrupolar coupling constant upon pnictogen bonding: strikingly, the decreases noted here parallel those known for hydrogen bonds, but contrast with the increases reported for halogen bonds. The utility of the observed antimony nuclear quadrupolar coupling constants in constraining structural models of cocrystals for which diffraction-based structures are unavailable, i.e., a rudimentary implementation of NQR crystallography, is established. Overall, this work offers a new approach to understand emerging classes of electrophilic interactions and to contextualize them in the broader landscape of established chemical bonding paradigms.

We report on the (25)Mg solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) characterization of a series of magnesium complexes featuring Mg(2+) ions in organic coordination environments. Six compounds have been synthesized with benzoate and salicylate ligands, which are typically used as linkers in metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The use of ultrahigh-field solid-state NMR has revealed a relatively large range of values for the (25)Mg quadrupolar coupling constant, CQ((25)Mg), in these compounds. In contrast to some previously studied inorganic Mg(2+) complexes, the values of CQ((25)Mg) in organic Mg(2+) complexes are well rationalized by the degree of octahedral strain of the "MgO6" coordination polyhedra. (13)C and (25)Mg isotropic chemical shifts were also found to be sensitive to the binding mode of the carboxylate ligands. The experimental findings are corroborated by gauge-including projector-augmented-wave (GIPAW) density functional theory (DFT) computations, and these have allowed for an interpretation of the experimentally observed trend in the CQ((25)Mg) values and for the visualization of the EFG tensor principal components with respect to the molecular structure. These new insights may prove to be valuable for the understanding and interpretation of (25)Mg NMR data for Mg(2+) ions in organic binding environments such as those found in MOFs and protein-divalent metal binding sites.

Central-transition (127)I solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectra are presented for several anhydrous group 2 metal iodides (MgI(2), CaI(2), SrI(2), and BaI(2)), hydrates (BaI(2)·2H(2)O and SrI(2)·6H(2)O), and CdI(2) (4H polytype). Variable offset cumulative spectrum data acquisition coupled with echo pulse sequences and an 'ultrahigh' applied field of 21.1 T were usually suitable to acquire high-quality spectra. Spectral analysis revealed iodine-127 nuclear quadrupole coupling constants (C(Q)((127)I)) ranging in magnitude from 43.5 (CaI(2)) to 214 MHz (one site in SrI(2)). For very large C(Q), analytical second-order perturbation theory could not be used to reliably extract chemical shifts and a treatment which includes quadrupolar effects exactly was required (Bain, A. D. Mol. Phys. 2003, 101, 3163). Differences between second-order and exact modeling allowed us to observe 'higher-order' quadrupole-induced effects for the first time. This finding will have implications for the interpretation of SSNMR spectra of quadrupolar nuclei with large quadrupole moments. In favorable situations (i.e., C(Q)((127)I) < 120 MHz), measurements were also performed at 11.75 T which when combined with the 21.1 T data allowed us to measure iodine chemical shift (CS) tensor spans in the range from 60 (BaI(2)·2H(2)O) to 300 ppm (one site in BaI(2)). These measurements represent the first complete characterizations (i.e., electric field gradient and CS tensors as well as their relative orientation) of noncubic iodide sites using (127)I SSNMR. In select cases, the SSNMR data are supported with (127)I NQR measurements. We also summarize a variety of trends in the halogen SSNMR parameters for group 2 metal halides. Gauge-including projector-augmented wave DFT computations are employed to complement the experimental observations, to predict potential structures for the two hydrates, and to highlight the sensitivity of C(Q)((127)I) to minute structural changes, which has potential applications in NMR crystallography.
