Cerro Machín, a volcano located in the northern segment of the Andes, is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Colombia with an explosive record that involves at least five plinian events. Prior studies focused on the last dome-building eruption have suggested the presence of a water-rich mid-crustal magma reservoir. However, no direct volatile measurements have been published and little work has been completed on the explosive products of the volcano. Here, we study the largest known eruption of Cerro Machín volcano which occurred 3600 years BP producing dacitic pyroclastic fall deposits that can be traced up to 40 km from the vent. Lapilli pumice clasts have a mineral assemblage of plagioclase, amphibole, quartz, and biotite phenocrysts, with accessory olivine, Fe–Ti oxides, and apatite. The occurrence of Fo89–92 olivine rimmed by high Mg# amphibole and the established high-water contents in the magma imply the presence of magma near or at water saturation at pressures > ~ 500 MPa. Measurements of up to 10.7 wt % H2O in melt inclusions hosted in plagioclase and quartz in the 3600 years BP eruption products support the idea that Cerro Machín is a remarkably water-rich volcanic system. Moreover, this is supported by measurements of ~103 to 161 ppm H2O in plagioclase phenocrysts. The application of two parameterizations of water partitioning between plagioclase and silicate melt allows us to use our water in plagioclase measurements to estimate equilibrium melt water contents of 5 ± 1 wt % to 11 ± 2 wt % H2O, which are in good agreement with the water contents we measured in melt inclusions. Results of amphibole geobarometry are consistent with a magma reservoir stored in the mid-to-lower crust at a modal pressure of 700 ± 250 MPa, corresponding to a depth of ~25 km. Minor crystallization in the shallow crust is also recorded by amphibole barometry and calculated entrapment pressures in melt inclusions. Amphibole is present as unzoned and zoned crystals. Two populations of unzoned amphibole crystals are present, the most abundant indicate crystallization conditions of 853 ± 26°C (1 se; standard error), and the less abundant crystallized at an average temperature of 944 ± 24°C (1 se). Approximately 18% of the amphibole crystals are normally or reversely zoned, providing evidence for a minor recharge event that could have been the trigger mechanism for the explosive eruption. Plagioclase crystals also show normal and reverse zoning. The moderate Ni concentrations (<1600 μg/g) in the high-Fo olivine xenocrysts suggest that Cerro Machín primary magmas are generated by inefficient interaction of mantle peridotite with a high-silica melt produced by slab melting of basaltic material. Some sediment input is also suggested by the high Pb/Th (>2.2) and Th/La (0.3–0.4) ratios. Whole rock chemistry reveals heavy rare earth element (HREE) depletion and Sr enrichment that likely formed during the crystallization of garnet and amphibole in the upper part of the mantle or lower portion of the crust, promoting the formation of water-rich dacitic magma that was then injected into the middle-to-lower crust. Textural and compositional differences in the crystal cargo that erupted during dome-building and plinian events support the idea that large volumes of magma recharge lead to effusive eruptions, while only small recharge events are needed to trigger plinian eruptions at Cerro Machín. The processes leading to the building of the continental crust through magmatic underplating are fundamentally unknown, mainly because of the rare accessibility to deep level sections of the continental crust. The Italian Alps expose the Permian Mafic Complex, an 8-km-thick gabbronorite–diorite batholith that intruded the lower continental crust during the post-Variscan transtensional tectonics. We present here a petrological and geochemical study of a concentric dunite–pyroxenite–gabbronorite association, called Monte Mazzucco sequence, enclosed at deep levels of the Mafic Complex, thereby allowing us to provide new insights into the magmatic processes driven by emplacement of mantle melts in deep crustal continental areas. The studied sequence includes a ~ 60-m-thick dunite lens, in which olivine (82 mol % forsterite) is associated with accessory Cr-spinel including blebs and lamellae made up of magnetite. The dunite lens is permeated by mm- to cm-scale thick magmatic veins, which range in composition from hornblende lherzolite to olivine hornblendite and hornblende websterite. The lens is mantled by a m-scale ring consisting of amphibole-bearing (≤1 vol %) websterite, and the websterite ring is in turn enclosed by amphibole-free gabbronorites. Both magmatic veins within the dunites and mantling websterites typically include an oxide association of Al-spinel and magnetite. Remarkably, the hornblende websterite veins and the mantling websterites are typically plagioclase-free and include clinopyroxene and amphibole with chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns characterized by negative Eu anomaly. The mantling websterites display a subtle, gradual outward decrease of Mg# for orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and accessory olivine, coupled with an increase of the negative Eu anomaly in clinopyroxene and amphibole. The enclosing gabbronorites are amphibole-free and have a chemically evolved signature. We propose a petrogenetic scenario including two major events of melt–dunite interaction. The first resulted from focused reactive melt infiltration and formed the magmatic veins within dunites. The hornblende lherzolite and the olivine hornblendite veins were produced by focused reactive melt migration through dunite grain boundaries, involving dissolution of olivine and recrystallization of Cr-spinel into Al-spinel and magnetite, whereas the hornblende websterite veins crystallized from melts penetrating through narrow fractures and recording earlier plagioclase fractionation. Most likely, the infiltrating melts were overall derived from an evolving H2O-rich magma emplaced below the dunite body. The second event of melt–dunite reactive interaction developed the websterite ring around dunites. We envision that the outermost domain of the dunite body was replaced by websterites in response to reaction with an invading H2O-poor melt, which had previously undergone plagioclase fractionation. The dunite replacement occurred under dynamic conditions, which promoted the reaction progress, thereby leading to total or almost total dissolution of precursor olivine, and started to form the lens shape of the Monte Mazzucco ultramafic association. The Canadian segment of the Cascade Volcanic Arc (i.e. the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt) comprises more than 100 eruptive centres, spanning the entire Quaternary period (Pleistocene to Holocene in age), and with deposits ranging in composition from alkaline basalt to rhyolite. At least one of the volcanoes is currently active; Mount Meager / Q̓welq̓welústen erupted explosively 2360 years BP and has ongoing fumarolic activity. Long-term forecasting of eruption frequency and style depends on reconstruction of the history and timescales of magmatic processes preceding previous volcanic eruptions. Utilising diffusion chronometry, we investigate the Mount Meager Volcanic Complex focusing on Holocene olivine-phyric basalts (Lillooet Glacier basalts) exposed by the retreat of the Lillooet Glacier. We identify two distinct olivine populations in samples of quenched, glassy basalt lavas that record different magmatic processes and histories. Glomerocrysts of Fo83 olivine phenocrysts, entrained and transported by a hot mafic input, form Population 1. These exhibit resorption and normally zoned outermost rim compositions of Fo76–78; a third of them also show interior reverse compositional zoning. A second population of skeletal microphenocrysts have the same composition as the phenocryst rims (i.e. Fo76–78) and are in equilibrium with the adjacent matrix glass. We estimate the pre-eruptive temperature- f O2 conditions in a shallow reservoir (100 MPa; ~3 km) for a melt with H2O content of 0.5 to 1 wt % as ~1097°C to 1106°C (± 30°C), and NNO + 0.5 (±1.1), respectively. Using these input parameters, we report Fe-Mg diffusion chronometry results for 234 normally zoned profiles from 81 olivine phenocrysts. Diffusion modelling of compositional profiles in oriented crystals indicates pre-eruptive magmatic residence times of 1 to 3 months. Rejuvenated volcanism is a worldwide phenomenon occurring on many oceanic islands in all of the major ocean basins. This plume-related volcanism follows the main edifice-building stage after a hiatus of variable duration (e.g. 0.6–2 Myrs in Hawai'i). The Honolulu Volcanics (HV), the classic case of rejuvenated volcanism, involved monogenetic eruptions from at least 48 vent areas. Previous studies inferred these vents were aligned along 3 to 11 rifts oriented orthogonal to the propagation direction of the Hawaiian plume. HV basalts are known for having high MgO contents (>10 wt %) and upper mantle xenoliths. Thus, HV magmas are assumed to be relatively primitive and to have ascended rapidly (<1 day) through the crust. However, new analyses of olivine cores in basalts from 24 HV vents are mostly too low in forsterite content (74–86 mol %) to be in equilibrium with mantle melts. Olivine and clinopyroxene in HV basalts commonly show reverse zoning indicating magma mixing prior to eruption. These results are inconsistent with the rapid ascent of HV magmas directly from their mantle source. Many of the HV magmas underwent storage (probably in the lower crust or uppermost mantle), crystal fractionation and magma mixing prior to eruption. New 40Ar/39Ar dates were determined for 11 HV lavas to evaluate their eruptive history. These ages, 80 to 685 ka, combined with our previous and other 40Ar/39Ar ages for HV lavas reveal long gaps (>50 kyr) between some eruptions. Our comprehensive, whole-rock major and trace element database (63 XRF analyses, 57 ICPMS analyses) of basalts from 37 vents show remarkable compositional diversity with no obvious spatial pattern or temporal trends. The two most recent eruptive sequences have the greatest diversity (basanite and melilitite compositions). HV basanites show systematic trace element trends that may reflect mixing of multiple source components. The nephelinites and melilitites require a complex source history that may have involved residual accessory minerals during mantle melting and a metasomatic component that was not carbonatitic. The new ages and geochemical data show eruptions along most of the previously proposed rift systems were unrelated (except for the Koko Rift). Therefore, geodynamic models that relate HV volcanism to these rift systems are invalid. Lava volumes for two HV eruptions were estimated at 0.11 and 0.23 km3 using surface mapping and water well data. Similar size, recent monogenetic eruptions in Auckland, New Zealand, were inferred to have lasted several months. Thus, if another HV eruption were to occur, which is possible given the long hiatus between eruptions, it would be extremely disruptive for the nearly 1 million residents of Honolulu. None of the existing geodynamic models fully explain the age duration, volumes and the locations of Hawai'i's rejuvenated volcanism. Thus, the cause of this secondary volcanism remains enigmatic. Upper Cretaceous–Miocene alkaline SiO2-undersaturated volcanic rocks in the southern Central European Volcanic Province (CEVP) comprise two distinct rock series: (i) Upper Cretaceous–Eocene (~73–47 Ma) olivine nephelinites, basanitic nephelinites, and nepheline basanites have moderate to high MgO (8–16 wt. %), CaO, Ni, Co, Cr, Nb, and Ba, coupled with low F and SiO2 concentrations. These rocks contain abundant clinopyroxene and variable amounts of olivine macrocrysts as well as nepheline, K-dominated F-poor mica, and hydroxyapatite. Evolved and less common apatite-rich (phonolitic) haüynites/noseanites and haüyne nephelinites (~68–62 Ma) represent differentiated counterparts within this older group, showing higher alkali, Al2O3, P2O5, Nb, Zn, REE, and SO3 concentrations at low MgO (4–6 wt. %), CaO, Ni, Co, and Cr contents. (ii) Oligocene–Miocene (~27–9 Ma) olivine melilitites and melilite-bearing olivine nephelinites are characterized by even higher MgO (10–22 wt. %), CaO, Ni, Co, Cr, Nb, Ba, and high F contents at lower SiO2 concentrations, as reflected by the presence of abundant olivine macrocrysts, melilite, perovskite, Cr-rich spinel, F- and Ba-rich mica, and fluorapatite in addition to clinopyroxene and nepheline. Distinct mineral assemblages, crystallization trends, and various xenocrysts indicate different melt sources, a varying extent of enrichment, retention, and loss of volatiles (including timing of H2O and CO2 saturation), and limited wall rock interaction for the two rock groups. Partly resorbed, Fo-depleted olivine cores in the younger rocks and green-core pyroxenes in the older ones suggest early magma mixing. The nephelinitic–basanitic magmas derived from up to 6% partial melting of amphibole-bearing garnet/spinel lherzolite at or just above the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary. This source was metasomatized involving hydrous melts or fluids. On the other hand, the melilite-bearing rocks probably originated in the upper asthenosphere by less than 3.5% partial melting of amphibole ± phlogopite-bearing garnet wehrlite, previously generated by subduction-related metasomatism with high CaO/MgO and CO2/(CO2 + H2O) ratios. Infiltration and storage of the metasomatic agents occurred in the former lower lithosphere, following continuous recycling of oceanic crust, comprising the release of Ca, CO2, H2O, further volatiles, and incompatible elements. Both volcanic episodes coincide with topographic uplift, erosion, rifting, and reactivation of lithosphere-scale faults, probably related to phases of strong mechanical coupling between Alpine orogen and European foreland. The first period overlapped with an era of prolonged N-directed intraplate compressional stress due to the Adriatic-Eurasian collision, provoking large-scale deformation, isostatic compensation, erosion, and consequent lithosphere thinning in the future CEVP. The second period is associated with the Oligocene–Miocene main stage of the European Cenozoic Rift System. Onset of volcanism was accompanied by a change in deformation in the Upper Rhine Graben from (W)NW extension to (E)NE extension and transtension by a complex interplay of evasive movements responding to shortening in Alps and Jura. Magma compositions, barely magmatic graben structures, volcanic activity outside rifts, and extensive exhumation suggest that in response to rifting, passive asthenospheric doming also contributed to magmatism by causing strong lithosphere–asthenosphere interaction and providing heat. The subducting Pacific slab stagnates in the mantle transition zone and creates a big mantle wedge (BMW) system in East Asia. A similar BMW structure may have already existed since the Early Cretaceous (>120 Ma), but how such a structure evolved from Early Cretaceous to the present day remains unclear. We address this issue by comparing compositions and source heterogeneity of the 106–58 Ma basalts from Liaodong Peninsula and its adjacent areas (LPAA) in eastern China, with those formed in the modern BMW setting. The LPAA basalts display oceanic island basalts–like trace element patterns. Elemental and isotopic compositions of these basalts and their olivine phenocrysts point to peridotite and two recycled components in their source. One recycled component is altered lower oceanic crust given the low δ18Oolivine (2.8–5.2‰) of the ~99 Ma Liaoyuan alkali basalts. The second component consists of altered upper oceanic crust and pelagic sediments indicated by high δ18Oolivine (>6.0‰), represented by the ~58 Ma Luanshishanzi alkali basalts. The depleted mantle-like isotopes of these two components suggest derivation from a young HIMU source with characteristics of the Izanagi plate (e.g. Indian Ocean-type Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes), which may have resided in the mantle transition zone at that time. Our results reveal strong similarities between chemical and source characteristics of the mantle sampled by the 106–58 Ma LPAA basalts and those derived from the modern BMW. This implies that the BMW structure has been present since the Early Cretaceous, probably having lasted more than 120 Myr, and modulating the chemical properties of the upper mantle and influencing a variety of geological processes. We investigate ten of the most recent tephra-fall deposits emplaced between ≤21 and 2 ka from the Pacheco stage of Misti volcano, Peru, to elucidate magma dynamics and explosive eruption triggers related to magma storage, recharge, and remobilization. Whole-rock, glass, and mineral textures and compositions indicate the presence of broadly felsic, intermediate, and mafic magmas in a chemically and thermally stratified magma storage system (Zones 1–3) that interact to differing extents prior to eruption. Intermediate magmas are defined by plagioclase + amphibole + two-pyroxenes + Fe-Ti oxides and phase equilibria indicate they formed at ~300 to 600 MPa and ~950°C to 1000°C. Intermediate magmas dominate the Pacheco stage and either erupted alone as hybridized magmas or mingled with minor volumes of cool felsic magmas (~800°C) in which only plagioclase + Fe-Ti oxides are stable. Felsic magmas do not exclusively comprise any tephra-fall deposit emplaced during the Pacheco stage but were remobilized by recharge and mixing with intermediate magmas in order to erupt. Furthermore, felsic-hosted amphibole cognate to the intermediate magmas are reacted despite the felsic magmas being water saturated, which suggests they are staged above the amphibole stability limit (≤200 MPa). The cryptic presence of mafic magmas is indicated by high-An plagioclase cores (An74–88), rare anhedral olivine (Fo77–80), and possibly high Mg# augite and amphibole (up to Mg# 84 and 77, respectively). The dearth of basalt to basaltic andesite melts recorded in erupted glasses and exclusivity of high-An plagioclase to crystal cores signals mafic magmas are staged deeper in the crust than the intermediate magmas. Periodic interactions between these magmas tracked via glass compositions and crystal exchange reveal an alternation between the production of mingled magmas and their eruption shortly after a recharge event, followed by a period of homogenization and eruption of hybridized magmas. As such, we identify magma recharge as a key mechanism by which half of the explosive eruptions were triggered in the Pacheco stage. A >100°C increase in Misti's fumarole temperatures from 1967 to 2018 coincident with changes in fumarolic gas compositions is consistent with degassing of a mafic recharge magma, signaling that Misti could produce similar explosive eruptions in the future. Textural, mineralogical and mineral compositional observations in a suite of Neoproterozoic aillikite and calcite kimberlite dykes from southern West Greenland point to consistent variations in melt major element compositions amongst these silica-undersaturated magma types. The aillikites have notably higher bulk SiO2/CO2, H2O/CO2 and K2O compared to calcite kimberlite. Bulk rock arrays, together with field and petrographic observations, emphasize that flow sorting of olivine and other crystalline phases during magma emplacement is important in controlling the compositions of individual samples from these ultramafic dykes. Flow sorting together with variable overall proportions of entrained lithospheric mantle material result in scatter on element–element plots, which makes the interpretation of regional scale major and trace element geochemical datasets difficult. We argue that a significant proportion of the regional Ni–MgO variation in the ultramafic dyke suite of SW Greenland is due to variation in the proportion of an entrained refractory lithospheric mantle component. Therefore, ratios of elements to MgO can be used as proxies for melt compositions. Ratios of SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, FeO and K2O over MgO are systematically higher, and CO2/MgO lower, in aillikites compared to calcite kimberlites. The trace element patterns of the calcite kimberlite and aillikite dykes show strong similarities in incompatible element concentrations, resulting in overlapping ratios for the highly to moderately incompatible elements. However, differences in Zr-Hf concentrations between rock types imply differences in mantle source mineralogy. Guided by our observations, we present mixing models that demonstrate that partial flux-melting of phlogopite–ilmenite metasomes within the cratonic mantle lithosphere is capable of produce the geochemical characteristics of aillikites and mela-aillikites in West Greenland. Reaction experiments have confirmed that phlogopite websterite can be formed by the interaction of peridotite with hydrous alkaline- or silica-rich melts. Phlogopite websterites commonly occur as xenoliths in orogenic and intraplate volcanism but do not receive much attention. We have experimentally investigated the melting behaviour of a phlogopite websterite at 1.5 GPa (1050–1300 °C), 3.0 GPa (1100–1500 °C), and 4.5 GPa (1200–1500 °C) to contribute to understanding the sources of ultrapotassic rocks that occur in different settings. The solidus temperature of the investigated phlogopite websterite rises with increasing pressure, bracketed between 1050 and 1100 °C at 1.5 GPa, 1100 and 1150 °C at 3.0 GPa, and between 1200 and 1250 °C at 4.5 GPa. At 1.5 GPa, phlogopite websterite melts incongruently to form olivine and melt, whereas orthopyroxene, garnet, and melt are formed at 3.0 and 4.5 GPa. The transition of orthopyroxene from reactant to product with increasing pressure results in changes in the SiO2 content of melts. The experimental melts reach a maximum K2O content when phlogopite is consumed completely at temperatures ~150 °C above the solidus. The melting reactions are similar to those of phlogopite lherzolite, but the low Al2O3 starting materials result in lower Al2O3 in the melt than in melts of phlogopite lherzolite. Comparison with natural ultrapotassic rock compositions reveals that the sources of ultrapotassic rocks in convergent settings may be dominated by phlogopite websterite, phlogopite lherzolite, and phlogopite harzburgite. Sources of ultrapotassic rocks in intraplate settings are more likely to include phlogopite clinopyroxenite ± CO2 and K-richterite. In all melting experiments on phlogopite-bearing rocks, K2O from phlogopite passes into the melt, and hence the highest K2O contents in ultrapotassic rocks must be an indication of the minimum stoichiometric coefficient of phlogopite in the melting reaction. In cases where phlogopite websterite or phlogopite lherzolite is identified as the source, the minimum modal percentage of phlogopite in the source can be inferred from the highest K2O content. When applied to the Milk River minettes and New South Wales leucitites, the estimated modal proportion of phlogopite in the sources is greater than 20 wt %. Phlogopite can survive the subduction process and melt later in the post-collisional environment, whereas thermal perturbations are necessary to trigger the melting of phlogopite-bearing assemblages at the base of the lithosphere in intraplate settings. Mantle rocks usually contain rare earth elements (REEs) in very low concentrations. Here, we document an occurrence of monazite associated with REE-rich apatites in a carbonate-bearing wehrlite xenolith from central Vietnam. The xenolith displays an equigranular matrix of rounded olivine grains while texturally primary orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel are notably absent. Scattered within the olivine matrix, two types of domains are present: domain-I contains blocky clinopyroxene grains within a matrix of quenched silicate melt and is associated with a second generation of olivine, small euhedral spinel, and rare grains of carbonates. Domain-II contains irregularly shaped patches of carbonate associated with silicate glass, secondary olivine, spinel, and clinopyroxene. Monazite and apatite occur only in domain-I: very small rounded to elongate monazite I grains are included in primary olivine, partly crosscut by fine glass veinlets, monazite II as large grains up to 300 × 200 μm in size and monazite III as small euhedral and needle-like crystals in silicate glass pools. Apatite I forms lath-shaped to rounded crystals up to 200 × 50 μm in size, whereas apatite II is present within silicate melt pools where it forms euhedral needle-like to equant grains. Monazites show compositional variation mainly with respect to ∑REE2O3 (63–69 wt %) and ThO2 (1.1–5.3 wt %) and only minor variations in P2O5 (29–32 wt %), SiO2 (<0.05–0.4 wt %), and CaO (0.2–0.4 wt %). Apatites are characterized by strongly variable and high REE2O3 and SiO2 contents (4–27 wt % ∑REE2O3, 0.6–6.8 wt % SiO2) as well as with significant Na2O (0.3–1.5 wt %), FeO (0.1–1.8 wt %), MgO (0.2–0.6 wt %) and SrO (0.2–0.9 wt %) contents. F and Cl contents are in the range 1.9–3.0 wt % and 0.2–0.8 wt %, respectively. The textures observed in this wehrlite xenolith are thought to be the result of an interaction of depleted (harzburgitic) mantle with cogenetic silicate and carbonatite melts formed by fractionation-driven immiscibility within a parental SiO2 undersaturated melt characterized by high P, CO2, and REE contents. The immiscibility occurred in the shallow subcontinental lithosphere at T of 700–800 °C and a depth of ~30 km and the melt–rock interaction occurred in two successive and most likely nearly simultaneous events: an initial stage of metasomatism was triggered by the P-REE-CO2-rich agent with low aH2O resulting in the co-precipitation of carbonates as patches and along micro-veins and of phosphates in a peridotitic assemblage. A second stage is characterized by pervasive infiltration of an alkali-rich basaltic melt into the carbonate + phosphate-bearing assemblage. Based on 232Th and 208Pb contents of monazite, a young age of ~2 Ma can be calculated for the timing of the monazite-forming metasomatic imprint. Based on 39Ar-40Ar extrusion ages of the xenolith-hosting alkali basalts of 2.6–5.4 Ma, this indicates that both carbonatite and basaltic melt infiltration must have occurred no more than a few hundred thousand years before extraction of the xenolith to the surface. We investigated the state of the arc background mantle (i.e. mantle wedge without slab component) by means of olivine CaO and its Cr-spinel inclusions in a series of high-Mg# volcanic rocks from the Quaternary Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Olivine CaO was paired with the Cr# [molar Cr/(Cr + Al) *100] of Cr-spinel inclusions, and 337 olivine+Cr-spinel pairs were obtained from 33 calc-alkaline, high-K and OIB-type arc front volcanic rocks, and three monogenetic rear-arc basalts that lack subduction signatures. Olivine+Cr-spinels display coherent elemental and He–O isotopic systematics that contrast with the compositional diversity of the bulk rocks. All arc front olivines have low CaO (0.135 ± 0.029 wt %) relative to rear-arc olivines which have the higher CaO (0.248 ± 0.028 wt %) of olivines from mid-ocean ridge basalts. Olivine 3He/4He–δ18O isotope systematics confirm that the olivine+Cr-spinels are not, or negligibly, affected by crustal basement contamination, and thus preserve compositional characteristics of primary arc magmas. Variations in melt H2O contents in the arc front series and the decoupling of olivine CaO and Ni are inconsistent with controls on the olivine CaO by melt water and/or secondary mantle pyroxenites. Instead, we propose that low olivine CaO reflects the typical low melt CaO of high-Mg# arc magmas erupting through thick crust. We interpret the inverse correlation of olivine CaO and Cr-spinel Cr# over a broad range of Cr# (~10–70) as co-variations of CaO, Al and Cr of their (near) primary host melts, which derived from a mantle that has been variably depleted by slab-flux driven serial melt extraction. Our results obviate the need for advecting depleted residual mantle from rear- and back-arc region, but do not upset the larger underlying global variations of melt CaO high-Mg# arc magmas worldwide, despite leading to considerable regional variations of melt CaO at the arc front of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Carbonatites, carbon-rich magmatic rocks, are thought to form by low-degree partial melting of a relatively carbon-poor mantle followed by protracted differentiation and immiscibility. However, the nature of parental magmas and the characteristics of the early stages of differentiation that shape the subsequent crystal and liquid lines of descent remain poorly constrained. To provide new constraints, deep crustal cumulative xenoliths from Oldoinyo Lengai (East African Rift), the only active volcano erupting carbonatite magmas, were studied. We use major and volatile elements in primitive olivine-hosted melt inclusions, as well as major and trace elements in crystals, to reconstruct the conditions of formation and evolution of cumulates (pressure, temperature, composition). Xenoliths are composed of olivine, diopside, phlogopite, amphibole and accessory minerals. One remarkable feature is the presence of diopside and phlogopite oikocrysts enclosing roundish olivine chadacrysts. Melt inclusions do not have vapor bubble and have major element compositions resembling olivine nephelinite (7–10 wt % MgO after corrections for post-entrapment crystallization). The absence of vapor bubbles implies that the concentrations of volatile components (i.e. CO2, H2O, S) were not compromised by well-known post-entrapment volatile loss into the vapor bubble. Based on the melt inclusion study by SIMS, the volatile concentrations in olivine nephelinite magmas (early stage of differentiation) at Oldoinyo Lengai were 20–130 ppm S, 390–4500 ppm F, 50–540 ppm Cl, up to 6074 ppm CO2 and up to 1.5 wt % H2O. According to the calculated CO2-H2O saturation pressures and geophysical data, xenoliths from Embalulu Oltatwa document a mushy reservoir in the lower crust. Primitive olivine nephelinite melt inclusions have higher H2O contents than olivine nephelinite lavas from other further South volcanoes from the North Tanzanian Divergence (0.2–0.5 wt % H2O), suggesting that the lithospheric mantle source beneath the Oldoinyo Lengai is more hydrated than the mantle beneath the rest of North Tanzanian Divergence. We present a model in which resorption features observed in olivine chadacrysts, together with the LREE enrichments in olivine grains, are the consequences of reactive porous flows in a deep crustal mushy reservoir. We provide constraints on the major, trace and volatile element composition of the parental magmas of carbonatite series and demonstrate with Rhyolite-MELTS models that phonolites and related natrocarbonatites from Oldoinyo Lengai can be produced by protracted differentiation of olivine nephelinite melts. We report new experimental data from ultrabasic basanite and ultrabasic tephrite as starting material compositions in the 1350°C to 1000°C temperature range. Crystallization experiments under low- to high-pressure (0.5–2.0 GPa) were carried out under reduced conditions (≈CCO buffer), while one-atmosphere, anhydrous, experiments were performed ranging from reduced to oxidized conditions (−2 ≤ ∆QFM ≤ +2). The results highlight the ƒO2 role on the silica saturation of the alkali liquids differentiated from these primary ultrabasic magmas, on the mineral assemblage, and its composition. The liquid lines of descent (LLDs) from basanite are sodic and strongly SiO2 undersaturated, whereas from tephrite, the LLDs are sodic-potassic/potassic for both weakly SiO2-undersaturated and SiO2-saturated compositions, being more silica saturated under oxidized conditions. At the lowest temperature experiments, the percentage of liquid remaining is significantly higher in the basanite-derived products (ca. 35 wt.%) than in tephrite, indicating that the equivalent magmas are more prone to produce larger quantities of evolved melts. The best obtained Fe–Mg olivine/melt and clinopyroxene/melt exchange coefficients for these alkali compositions considering the new and available data are |${K_D}_{Fe^{2+}- Mg}^{Ol- Alkali\ melt}=0.285\pm 0.014$| and |${K_D}_{Fe^{2+}- Mg}^{Cpx- Alkali\ melt}=0.245\pm 0.008$|⁠ , slightly lower than those observed in tholeiitic melts. Clinopyroxene compositions are Ti–Al-rich and Si-poor as compared with common clinopyroxenes in subalkali systems. We suggest that Ti should be allocated in the tetrahedral sites substituting for Si and that its contents are inversely correlated with pressure. Our results allow a simple new barometer based on clinopyroxene-only compositions, as follows: $$ P\left(\pm 0.16\ GPa,1\sigma \right)=16.028\left(\pm 1.042\right) Na-6.715\left(\pm 0.727\right)\frac{Ti}{Ti+ Al(t)}+0.494\left(\pm 0.441\right) Si+0.144\left(\pm 0.079\right) $$ where Na, Ti, Al(t), and Si are molar proportions relative to 6O. This formulation accounts for the jadeite (NaAlSi2O6) component, herein computed from the Na contents, corrected for the Ti-diopside (CaMgTi2O6) component in clinopyroxene and also considers the evolutionary trend from Mg-augite to ferroan diopside. It applies to alkali ultrabasic to intermediate compositions in the examined P–T–ƒO2 range, resulting in more accurate estimates than the available calibrations. The MgO-in-melt thermometer was optimized for the studied compositions at one-atmosphere pressure and anhydrous conditions, as follows: $$ T\ \left(\pm 5{}^{\circ}C,1\sigma \right)=27.35\left(\pm 0.65\right)\ \big({MgO}^{liq}\big)+984\left(\pm 4\right) $$ which provides much more reliable liquidus temperatures for these alkali systems. The application of the olivine–spinel aluminum exchange thermometer to natural samples is limited by the restricted experimental data set on which it was calibrated. Here, we present a new data set of 46 high-temperature crystallization experiments and 21 reanalyzed published experiments, which we used to extend the calibration to higher and lower temperatures. The final calibration data set spans a range of conditions relevant to crustal and upper mantle processes: 1174–1606°C, 0.1–1350 MPa, QFM − 2.5 to QFM + 7.2 (oxygen fugacity, f O2, reported in log units relative to the quartz–fayalite–magnetite buffer, QFM), and 0–7.4 wt % H2Omelt. We propose three new models. The first is thermodynamically self-consistent, based on spinel Fe, Mg, Al, and Cr compositions and Al exchange between olivine and spinel. The second and third are empirical models that consider fewer elemental exchanges: the second uses only Al exchange and spinel compositions, whereas the third considers olivine–spinel Al and Cr exchange. All models include the modest effect of pressure on olivine-spinel equilibrium chemistry, whereas f O2 and water content have negligible effects. In general, as fewer elements are considered in the olivine–spinel exchange, the fit to experimental data worsens. Conversely, the associated decrease in model complexity improves their robustness against systematic errors when applied to natural crystal pairs: the thermodynamic model may underestimate crystallization temperatures in natural samples due to spinel subsolidus re-equilibration, whereas the empirical models (independent of Fe and Mg in spinel) are less sensitive to re-equilibration but yield temperatures with larger uncertainties. We applied a statistical test to select the most appropriate model for application to natural samples. When applied to lavas from mid-ocean ridges, Iceland, Skye, Emeishan, Etendeka, and Tortugal, our new temperature estimates are 30–100°C lower than previously proposed. The 2060 ± 2 Ma Phalaborwa Complex is a pipe-like, ultramafic to carbonatite intrusion formed from multiple magma pulses. The complex is made up of a main pipe consisting of clinopyroxenites, ultramafic pegmatoids, carbonatites and foskorite (olivine-apatite-magnetite-calcite assemblage), surrounded by many smaller syenite plugs. The range in mineral δ18O values for all rock types and minerals analysed in the Phalaborwa Complex is 2.24 to 18.3‰. However, 24 analyses of the most abundant and robust mineral, diopside, all have δ18O values between 6.5 and 8.1‰. The δ18O values of baddeleyite, olivine, diopside, magnetite, apatite and aegirine are thought to be magmatic. Most mineral pairs have differences in δ18O values that are consistent with magmatic equilibrium at high temperatures down to closure temperature. Alkali feldspar and phlogopite have more variable δ18O values, and both minerals may have undergone subsolidus O exchange. The δD values for petrographically fresh Phalaborwa Complex phlogopite range from −79 to −48‰ with a mean of −64 ± 9‰ (1σ, n  = 19). The phlogopite δD values are consistent with subduction-related magmatic water. Despite petrographic evidence for fluid–rock interaction in the carbonatite–foskorite rocks, the carbonatite δ13C and δ18O range (δ18O, 8.13 to 12.00‰; δ13C, −3.19 to −5.60‰) overlaps with the unaltered, primary igneous carbonatite field. Magma δ18O values estimated from silicate and oxide minerals are mostly higher than normal mantle magmas (pyroxenites, ~7.6‰; foskorite, 7.2‰). The δ18O value of syenite magma estimated from aegirine is 7.8 ± 0.9‰ (1σ, n  = 8), in equilibrium with whole-rock syenite δ18O values (8.7 ± 0.4‰, 1σ, n  = 5). Local basement rocks have average bulk δ18O values of 8.6‰, and realistic proportions of assimilation by a mantle-derived magma (δ18O, 5.7‰) could not have produced the δ18O values in the pyroxenites or foskorites. Instead, it is proposed that the high-δ18O values of Phalaborwa Complex magmas reflect that of the mantle source. High δ18O values are also a feature of the Rustenburg Layered Suite of the Bushveld Complex (2060 to 2055 Ma), which may have had a similar high-δ18O mantle source. In recent studies of crustal growth using global zircon Hf–O isotopic datasets, high-δ18O zircons are typically attributed to intra-crustal reworking during which very little juvenile mantle-derived magmas were added to the crust. Although arc magmas may originate from a high-δ18O mantle wedge, it has been difficult to decipher the contribution of high-δ18O mantle to zircon-saturated felsic magma due to superimposed intra-crustal processes. We address this issue by combining the data from high-δ18O zircon-bearing ultramafic cumulates and coeval lavas from a Cretaceous magmatic arc in southern Tibet. The cumulates mainly consist of different proportions of cumulus olivine and intercumulus amphibole. Amphibole analyses show a transition from increasing to decreasing Zr with increasing SiO2 (50–74 wt.%) contents in the intercumulus melts, indicating zircon saturation in late-stage interstitial melts. The εNd(t) values (2.4 ± 1.4) of the apatite grains crystallized before and after zircon remain almost constant. Interstitial zircons have δ18O (6.1–7.2‰) values similar to the earliest crystallized olivine (δ18O = 6.3–7.1‰) in the cumulates. The coeval lavas may represent the intercumulus melts extracted from amphibole-rich cumulates at different depths. Both the lavas and cumulates were ultimately derived from high-δ18O arc mantle modified by small amounts (<12%) of subducted sediments, and crystallized zircon during intra-crustal magma evolution without involving crustal contamination or melting. These high-δ18O zircons therefore are not products of crustal reworking, but record crustal growth during their crystallization (110 ± 2 Ma). Our study shows that the combination of zircon and olivine oxygen isotopes for ultramafic to felsic rocks is more effective than zircon data alone in evaluating the role of crustal growth vs. reworking in an arc system. We investigated the early stages of olivine crystal growth via in situ seeded experiments in a single plagioclase-hosted melt inclusion, using a heating stage microscope. Each experiment was subjected to a cooling ramp of 7800°C/h followed by an isothermal dwell at 19°C, 38°C, 57°C, 77°C, 96°C or 129°C of undercooling. The seeds (6–16 μm in diameter Ø) grew into large crystals (Ø 80–169 μm) in 3 to 30 min through the symmetrical development of tabular, skeletal, and dendritic overgrowths as the undercooling of the system increased. Time-resolved image processing and incremental measurements of the overgrowth thicknesses indicate up to three stages of crystal growth: an acceleration stage, a linear (constant growth rate) stage, and a deceleration stage. At the isotherm, the growth velocities reach a stable maximum that in all experiments corresponds to the period of linear growth. The highest linear values are measured at the |$\left\{101\right\}$| interfaces, from 2.1 × 10−8 m/s at 19°C of undercooling to 4.8 × 10−7 m/s at 129°C of undercooling. Crystal growth is slower at other interfaces, in the ranges 1.9–7.6 × 10−8 m/s and 4.5 × 10−9 – 7.6 × 10−8 m/s for the |$\left\{100\right\}$| and |$\left\{001\right\}$| forms, respectively. Growth in the |$<010>$| dimension appears limited to less than 2.4 × 10−8 m/s at 129°C of undercooling. We constrain the uncertainty on these growth velocities, which includes the environmental conditions (± 8.6°C on the nominal undercooling) and the measurements of crystal lengths (underestimated by <16% at most fast interfaces). A systematic and comprehensive review of 19 pre-existing datasets indicates that our linear growth velocities are faster than most growth rates determined at comparable undercoolings. Growth rates determined as half crystal lengths divided by total time are intrinsically low estimates of the true maximum, linear growth velocities, because the total time includes periods of slower or non-growth, and measured crystal dimensions are subject to projection foreshortening or truncation. These errors can lead to values that are several times to several orders of magnitude lower than the true maximum growth rates. This study completes and refines previously published data on the crystallization kinetics of olivine, highlighting the sensitivity of growth rates to specific environmental conditions and measurement methods. Fractional crystallization of Fe–Ti oxides can induce detectable Mg isotopic changes during late-stage basalt differentiation. Because chromite and olivine are early crystallizing phases during basaltic melt differentiation, the effect of chromite crystallization on the fractionation of Mg isotopes during early-stage basalt differentiation is still poorly understood. Here, we examine the possibility of chromite induced Mg isotope fractionation with a Mg isotopic study of chromite–olivine pairs in dunites and chromitites collected from major types of basaltic intrusive rock suites formed by fractional crystallization in different tectonic settings. The chromite δ26Mg (= [(26Mg/24Mg)sample / (26Mg/24Mg)DSM3–1] × 1000) values range from −0.19‰ to 0.30‰ in the Luobusa ophiolite, −0.09‰ to 0.78‰ in the Kızıldağ ophiolite, −0.04 to 0.42‰ in the Gaositai Alaskan-type complex, similar to those previously reported from the Stillwater layered intrusion (−0.05 to 0.84‰; Bai et al., 2021). They are significantly higher than those of coexisting olivine (δ26Mg = −0.48 to −0.10‰). The Δ26MgChr-Ol (= δ26MgChr − δ26MgOl) values in the rock suites investigated here fall largely between equilibrium fractionation lines of spinel–olivine pairs and magnesioferrite–olivine pairs, indicating equilibrium Mg isotopic fractionation. Furthermore, the Δ26MgChr-Ol values increase with decreasing Cr content of chromite in the dunites and chromitites, showing that high 26Mg has a greater affinity to Al-rich chromite than Cr-rich chromite. Fractional crystallization of such isotopically high chromite is expected to progressively lower the Mg isotope values of the in the remaining magma. Furthermore, continental basaltic magmas typically experience early crystallization of olivine and Al-rich chromite. Their δ26Mg values correlate positively with MgO (FeO, Cr,) and CaO/Al2O3 ratios and negatively with total alkali contents (Na2O + K2O). This indicates that detectable Mg isotopic fractionation occurred in intra-continental basalt magmas, probably by fractional crystallization of olivine and chromite. The observed low-δ26Mg intra-continental basalts can be accurately modeled by olivine + chromite fractionation with fractionation factors (Δ26MgChr-Melt) of 0.20‰, 0.60‰, and 1.18‰ as observed in the chromitites investigated during this study. Therefore, the early-stage basaltic melt differentiation involving separation of olivine and chromite may induce resolvable Mg isotopic fractionation, and the δ26Mg values of continental basalts should be used with caution in petrogenetic studies. Siliceous slab-derived partial melts infiltrate the sub-arc mantle and cause rock-melt reactions, which govern the formation of diverse primary arc magmas and lithological heterogeneities. The effect of bulk water content, composition of reactants, and nature of melt infiltration (porous versus channelized) on the rock-melt reactions at sub-arc conditions have been investigated by previous studies. However, the effect of multiple episodes of rock-melt reactions in such scenarios has not been investigated before. Here, we explore mantle wedge modifications through serial additions of hydrous-silicic slab partial melts and whether such a process may ultimately explain the origin of high-Mg# andesites found in arcs worldwide. A series of piston-cylinder experiments simulate a serial addition of silicic slab melts in up to three stages (I through III) at 3 GPa and 800–1050°C, using rock-melt proportions of 75–25 and 50–50. A synthetic KLB-1 and a natural rhyolite (JR-1) represented the mantle and the slab components, respectively. Right from the first rock-melt interaction, the peridotite mantle transforms into olivine-free mica-rich pyroxenites ± amphibole ± quartz/coesite in equilibrium with rhyolitic-hydrous melts (72–80 wt% SiO2 and 40–90 Mg#). The formation of olivine-free pyroxenite seems to be controlled by complex functions of T , P , rock-melt ratio, wedge composition, and silica activity of the slab-melt. Remarkably, the pyroxenites approach a melt-buffered state with progressive stages of rock-melt reactions, where those rhyolitic melts inherit and preserve the major (alkalis, Fe, Mg, Ca) and trace element slab-signature. Our results demonstrate that lithological heterogeneities such as pyroxenites formed as products of rock-melt reactions in the sub-arc mantle may function as melt 'enablers,' implying that they may act as pathways that enable the infiltrating melt to retain their slab signature without undergoing modification. Moreover, the density contrast between the products of rock-melt reaction (melts and residues) and the average mantle wedge (~150 to 400 kg/m3) may help forming instabilities and diapiric rise of the slab components into the mantle wedge. However, the fate of the primitive slab-melts seems to be associated with the length of the pathway of mantle interaction which explains the evident wide magma spectrum as well as their degree of slab garnet-signature dilution. This work and the existence of high-Mg# Mexican-trondhjemites indicates that almost pristine slab-melts can make their way up to crustal levels and contribute to the arc magma diversity. The origin of lamprophyres associated with large igneous provinces (LIPs) remains controversial, particularly whether they are derived by direct melting of mantle plumes, or from previously metasomatized domains in thermally perturbed subcontinental lithosphere. Here, we report the petrological and geochemical characteristics of a recently identified suite of alkaline lamprophyres (sannaites) that represent the final pulse of magmatism in the Permian Tarim LIP in NW China. The sannaites display porphyritic texture with phenocrysts of olivine, clinopyroxene, hornblende, phlogopite, and titanomagnetite in a groundmass of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, nepheline, hornblende, biotite, and titanomagnetite with minor pyrite and apatite. Carbonate ocelli and almost pure albite in the groundmass are interpreted to have crystallized from immiscible carbonate and hydrous fluids, respectively, produced by late-stage magmatic segregation. The rocks show low to moderate SiO2 (37.7–49.3 wt.%) and MgO (2.74–9.91 wt.%), together with high Fe2O3T (up to 22.7 wt.%) and alkali contents (up to 9.02 wt.% Na2O + K2O). They are characterized by high incompatible element abundances, especially a marked enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements (Rb and Ba) and light rare-earth elements (e.g. La and Ce) relative to P and high-field-strength elements (e.g. Ti). They show a relatively restricted range of δ66Zn values between 0.22‰ and 0.46‰ with an average of 0.37 ± 0.04‰ (2SE, n  = 10), which is marginally heavier than that of MORBs (0.27 ± 0.05‰). Their (87Sr/86Sr)t values range from 0.7035 to 0.7061, εNd(t) from −0.97 to +5.62, and δ26Mg from −0.36‰ to −0.17‰ (n  = 8), the latter being consistent with those of global MORBs. Based on the correlation between Zn isotopes and TiO2–FeO concentrations, we infer that the heavy Zn isotopes in some of the sannaites resulted from fractional crystallization of Fe–Ti oxide minerals. The whole rock geochemical features of these rocks (negative K anomalies and enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements) and rhyolite–MELTS simulations suggest that the primary magmas of the sannaites were derived from an amphibole-bearing enriched lithospheric mantle source. Metasomatism and related formation of amphibole-bearing metasomatized mantle may be linked to sublithospheric melts/fluids derived from the Tarim plume in the earlier stages of plume activity, rather than slab-derived fluids or carbonate melts as suggested in previous studies for other alkaline mantle-derived magmas. Partial melting may have been triggered by the thermal input from the Tarim plume during a later stage. This study suggests that exotic, alkali-rich magmas can be produced during the multi-stage evolution of large mantle plumes, involving complex cycles of lithospheric mantle metasomatism and later melting of previously enriched domains. Crystal clusters are common in both extrusive and plutonic rocks, but the mechanisms by which they form are not well-constrained. Following a consideration of the physics of nucleation, we outline the expected microstructural characteristics of clusters formed by heterogeneous nucleation and those formed by synneusis, together with the ways they might evolve during subsequent grain growth and textural equilibration. By combining analysis of the microstructures in experimental chromite-basalt charges with a detailed microstructural analysis of the UG2 chromitite of the Bushveld layered intrusion using EBSD, we argue that the UG2 chromitite formed by settling and accumulation of single grains and clusters comprising randomly oriented grains produced by the aggregation of previously isolated chromite crystals. Although there is no evidence of epitaxy, at least some of the lowermost chromite grains of the main UG2 chromitite may have nucleated heterogeneously on the silicate grains forming the floor, with subsequent accumulation and sintering of individual grains or clusters. The reduced thickness of chromitites on the steep and overhanging parts of the floor is thus due to the relative difficulty of sticking more grains to the existing layer in these orientations. The absence of any fining-upwards of grains in either the main UG2 chromitite or the associated stringer can be accounted for if both layers were formed by the settling and accumulation of clusters as well as single grains. Comparison with examples of clustered chromite grains in extrusive rocks suggests that aggregation by synneusis is a widespread magmatic process. The 'chicken-wire' texture formed by clustered chromite grains commonly found in olivine-rich cumulates is argued to also be formed by gravitational settling, with the possible exception of clusters of chromite grains in relatively thin seams argued to be the result of metasomatism, which may instead have formed by impingement during in situ growth. Disentangling the physico-chemical evolution of the melts that give rise to kimberlites during their genesis, ascent through the sub-cratonic lithosphere and emplacement in the crust is challenging. This is because the extensive entrainment and assimilation of, and reaction with, mantle-derived material makes kimberlites mixtures of xenocrystic, magmatic components and alteration minerals, rarely preserving evidence of their original melt composition. Here, a detailed textural and compositional study of coherent and volcaniclastic kimberlite units from the Udachnaya–East pipe (Siberian craton) was performed to reconstruct the pressure–temperature–oxygen fugacity-compositional (P – T – f O2–X) path of kimberlite melts during their ascent through the sub-cratonic lithosphere. Routine and high-precision electron microprobe analyses of olivine, phlogopite and Fe–Ti oxides enabled to discriminate the mantle-derived cargo from the magmatic components, and thus make inferences on the liquid line of descent (LLD) of proto-kimberlite to kimberlite melts. Most of the olivine cores in Udachnaya–East kimberlite are xenocrystic and record conditions of last equilibration in the Siberian sub-cratonic lithospheric mantle at T–P ranging from 812–1227°C at 3.1–5.4 GPa, to 871–1170°C at 4.6–7.0 GPa, depending on the chosen model geotherm (35 mW/m2 vs 40 mW/m2). Based on their Ni, Cr, Mn, Al and P vs Mg/Fe systematics, olivine core populations were associated to the sheared, granular garnet-bearing or spinel-bearing cratonic peridotites. The occurrence of olivine Internal Zones (I) having the same composition as Fe-rich cores, as well as rare mantle-derived xenocrystic cores of phlogopite, bear witness of mantle metasomatism preceding kimberlite ascent. The assimilation of mantle material by initially H2O- and P-rich proto-kimberlitic melts is recorded by the cotectic formation of magmatic olivine Internal Zones (II) and phlogopite Internal Zones around resorbed xenocrystic cores. The LLD then evolved by inducing cotectic precipitation of olivine, phlogopite rims and Cr-spinel at P of 1.5–3.0 GPa, T of 1120–1250°C and f O2 from −2.8 to −1.6 ΔFMQ. Ilmenite–magnetite pairs in the groundmass record the later conditions of crystallization that occurred at P of ~1.0 GPa, T from 1133°C down to 1000°C and f O2 of +0.3 to +0.9 ΔFMQ. These results confirm the progressive oxidation of the melt that finally led to the formation of calcite, apatite and Mg-rich olivine and phlogopite rinds. The F-enrichment of phlogopite rinds reflects a late decrease of the H2O/CO2 activity of the melt that evolved toward alkali-carbonated composition. Our results showed that the crystal cargo of kimberlites can be used to track all processes acting in between the melt-rock reactions in the mantle and the emplacement in the crust. The formation of post-collisional mantle-derived rocks in the Tibetan Plateau has been linked to the deep geodynamic processes that cause surface uplift. Co-existing silica-oversaturated to silica-undersaturated mantle-derived rocks have been identified in the northern Qiangtang Terrane (NQT). However, the origins of silica-undersaturated magmas are controversial, and the mechanisms responsible for variable silica activity in the mantle-derived rocks are unclear. Here, we present 40Ar/39Ar chronology, mineral chemistry, and whole-rock geochemical data for the Bamaoqiongzong (BMQZ) volcanic rocks of the NQT. The BMQZ volcanic rocks consist of olivine leucitites, trachybasalts, and phonolites and were erupted at ca. 29 Ma. All samples are unsaturated in silica and characterized by enrichment in light rare earth elements and large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in high-field-strength elements, and the presence of negative Nb–Ta–Ti anomalies and positive Pb anomalies. All samples show limited variation in (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.7079–0.7085) and εNd(t) values (−6.9 to −5.3). The geochemical compositions of the BMQZ volcanic rocks indicate that they were produced by partial melting of carbonated phlogopite–lherzolite within the lithospheric mantle. The formation of the olivine leucitites-trachybasalts-phonolites suite was controlled by fractional crystallization and magma mixing in a magmatic plumbing system. This plumbing system included several independent reservoirs and conduits within the crust. The enriched mantle sources of the BMQZ volcanic rocks were formed by the addition of carbonate-rich melts released from the southward-subducted Songpan–Ganzi Terrane after the Late Cretaceous. Our new results, together with published data, reveal systematic variations in geochemical compositions between silica-undersaturated and silica-oversaturated rocks in the NQT, which are ascribed to variations in the nature of the subducted continental materials added during intracontinental subduction. Carbonate-rich melts that were formed by the breakdown of carbonate minerals helped to generate the mantle sources of silica-undersaturated rocks, whereas silicate melts produced by the partial melting of sediment diapirs contributed to the generation of the silica-oversaturated rocks. On the basis of published numerical modelling of continental subduction and crustal deformation records in the NQT, we suggest that intracontinental subduction and lithospheric thinning together contributed to the generation of post-collisional mantle-derived rocks in the Tibetan Plateau. Complex multiphase reaction rims that form during garnet breakdown are known as kelyphite coronae and are common amongst exhumed mantle xenoliths. It has long been established that a reaction of garnet and olivine produces kelyphite corona consisting of spinel and pyroxenes, and that preservation of high-pressure garnet cores requires sufficiently rapid uplift of material through the spinel lherzolite stability field from depths of at least 60 km. We present new high-pressure, high-temperature experiments of garnet breakdown in the spinel–lherzolite stability field demonstrating that a series of cascading reactions can reproduce the multilayer, multiphase kelyphites seen in nature. In all experiments where breakdown occurred, a melt appears to have moderated the reactions towards equilibrium; we believe this to be the first experimental confirmation of the importance of such melts in garnet breakdown reactions. In our experiments at least three distinct zones of concentric kelyphite growth can occur at a single pressure, temperature condition; we suggest, therefore, that such kelyphites seen in natural samples do not have to be caused by a multistage uplift path as is often assumed. Kelyphitic coronae surrounding garnet have previously been used to estimate uplift rates; however, the lack of kinetic data for relevant exhumation reactions has limited their use for PTt pathway estimations and the understanding of emplacement mechanisms. In order to constrain accurate PTt pathways we use reaction rim thickness as a proxy for reaction progress and present preliminary results for the kinetics of garnet breakdown. Constraints on mantle heterogeneity are important for understanding geochemical differentiation and recycling in Earth's interior. Alkali basalts are of particular interest in this context due to the clear signatures of recycled components that they yield. Previous studies have focused more on oceanic basalts than on continental mafic rocks because the chemical and isotopic characteristics of the latter are often modified by crustal contamination; however, high-forsterite olivine crystals and olivine-hosted melt inclusions may record the compositions of primitive melts before extensive crustal contamination, providing valuable insights into mantle heterogeneity. Here we report the results of high-precision major-, minor-, and trace-element and Pb isotope analyses of olivine phenocrysts and melt inclusions from the Sailipu potassic alkali basalts from southern Tibet, which constrain the mantle source of continental potassic alkali basalts. The minor- and trace-element compositions of the olivine phenocrysts (e.g. Ni and Ca contents and 100 × Mn/Fe, 10 000 × Zn/Fe, and Ni/Co ratios) suggest that the primary magmas were derived from a phlogopite-bearing pyroxenite source in which peridotite residues were also present. The low- and high-Li contents of the olivine phenocrysts suggest the recycling of continental crustal material in their mantle source. Comparing the major-element compositions (e.g. SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, MnO, CaO, and Na2O contents), FCMS and FCKANTMS parameters, and pseudo-ternary projections of the primary Sailipu magmas with experimental data suggests that the primary magmas were partial melts of olivine-poor or carbonated olivine-poor lithologies with a small amount of peridotite residue. The negative Nb and Ta and positive Pb anomalies seen in primitive mantle-normalized trace-element patterns and the extremely low Nb/U ratios of the melt inclusions suggest that recycling of continental crust was the main process involved in enriching the mantle source of the Sailipu magmas. The heterogeneous Pb isotopic compositions of the melt inclusions (208Pb/206Pb = 2.089 – 2.158; 207Pb/206Pb = 0.851 – 0.858) are consistent with the presence of peridotite residue in this source. The Doldrums Megatransform System (~7–8°N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge) shows a complex architecture including four intra-transform ridge segments bounded by five active transform faults. Lower crustal rocks are exposed along the Doldrums and Vernadsky transform walls that bound the northernmost intra-transform ridge segment. The recovered gabbros are characterized by variably evolved chemical compositions, ranging from olivine gabbros to gabbronorites and oxide gabbros, and lack the most primitive gabbroic endmembers (troctolites, dunites). Notably, the numerous recovered gabbronorites show up to 20 vol. % of coarse-grained orthopyroxene. Although covariations in mineral and bulk-rock chemical compositions of the olivine and oxide gabbros define trends of crystallization from a common parental melt, the gabbronorites show elevated light over heavy rare earth elements (LREE/HREE) ratios in both bulk-rock and mineral compositions. These features are not consistent with a petrological evolution driven solely by fractional crystallization, which cannot produce the preferential enrichments in highly incompatible elements documented in the orthopyroxene-bearing lithologies. We suggest that gabbronorites crystallized from evolved melts percolating and partly assimilating a pre-existing olivine gabbro matrix. Saturation in orthopyroxene and selective enrichments in LREE relative to M-HREE are both triggered by an increase in assimilated crystal mass, which ranges from negligible in the oxide-gabbros to abundant in the gabbronorites. This melt–rock reaction process has been related to lateral melt migration beneath ridge-transform intersections, where variably evolved melts injected from the peripheral parts of the melting region towards the transform zone may interact with a gabbroic crystal mush to form abundant oxide-bearing gabbronoritic associations. Kimberlites carry a dense cargo of olivine. Although normally referred to as macrocrysts, much of this olivine is present as multigrain xenoliths of dunite. Because of their well-rounded outlines, we refer to these objects as 'nodules' and apply the term to both multigranular and monogranular varieties. Although compositions within each nodule are very uniform, the entire population displays an enormous variation in Fo content (100*Mg/(Mg + Fe), cation proportions), from close to Fo95 to about Fo82. The change is continuous, and there is no indication of separate Fo-rich and Fo-poor populations. Likewise, the sizes, internal textures and habits of Fo-rich and Fo-poor olivines are indistinguishable. Fo-poor nodules have compositions like those of olivines of the megacryst suite, and they share similar sizes and internal structures. We propose that the dunite nodules in kimberlites and olivines of the megacryst suite have a common origin. In our interpretation, almost all olivines in kimberlites, except for the marginal rims and rinds, are fragments of dunite that was produced during interaction between mantle peridotite and CO2-rich fluid. Analogues of this process can be found in ophiolites where dunite is the product of reaction between basaltic magma and peridotite. In situ reactive crystallization eliminated pyroxene, leaving only olivine with Fo contents ranging from higher to lower Fo than in the host peridotite. Olivines are the dominant phase of kimberlites and the majority of grains display distinct compositional zoning with xenocrystic cores surrounded by magmatic rims. Previous work has documented large variations in both core and rim major and minor element compositions in kimberlites globally, which has been related to variable entrainment and assimilation of sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) material. However, there is limited knowledge of trace element variations in olivine from kimberlites and it is unclear whether mantle assimilation has any effect on the trace element composition of kimberlite melts. To fill this gap, we present a global survey of olivine trace element compositions, along with previously reported major and minor element compositions, for samples representing the full spectrum of olivine compositional variations in kimberlites, including samples from the following: Lac de Gras, Canada (Grizzly, Koala); Kimberley, South Africa (Bultfontein, De Beers, Kimberley Big Hole, Wesselton); Kaalvallei, South Africa (New Robinson, Samada); and Alto Paranaiba, Brazil (Limpeza-18, Tres Ranchos-04). Trace element concentrations of olivine cores can discriminate between those derived from the disaggregation of peridotitic material and those related to the megacryst suite. The megacrystic olivine cores exhibit a negative correlation between Al and Mn, which is absent in peridotite-derived cores, and are characterised by high concentrations of temperature-dependent elements (e.g. Al, Na, V) as well as Zn, Ti, and Mn. Following pre-screening of cores for megacrystic and spinel peridotite-derived grains, we applied the Al-in-olivine thermometer to assess the P–T equilibration conditions of cores in equilibrium with garnet and estimate the sampling depth of kimberlite magmas in the lithospheric mantle. Our results are consistent with predominant entrainment of deep lithosphere xenocrysts in highly diamondiferous compared with diamond-poor kimberlites. Temperature-dependent elements display a gradational increase with depth due to higher T with Ca, Cu and, to a lesser extent, Zn and Ti being higher and Mg# being lower towards the base of the SCLM, which is consistent with melt modification of the lower lithosphere. The Zn, Ti, Co, Mn, Li, Al, Cr, Na, and V concentrations of magmatic olivine rims display systematic variations that have a negative correlation with Mg# (whereas Cr is positively correlated). Lac de Gras olivine feature Mg-rich rims (Mg# >90) and low concentrations of these trace elements, whereas the Fe-rich olivine rims (Mg# ~85) of the Kaalvallei kimberlites have higher concentrations of these elements, with the Kimberley and Alto Paranaiba kimberlites being intermediate. Direct correlations between average Ti, Zn, Co and Li compositions of olivine cores and rims suggests that the olivine rim (i.e. proxy for primitive melt) variations are related to variable assimilation of metasomatised SCLM and can be effectively used to track the composition of the lithospheric column that is traversed by kimberlite magmas. These observations further imply an intimate link between early proto-kimberlite melt, leading to formation of megacrystic olivine at the base of the SCLM, and the composition of kimberlite melts which entrain and assimilate these products. Newly discovered meta-troctolite enclaves in Early Paleozoic Huanggang diorite within dominantly meta-volcaniclastic greenschist to amphibolite facies Erlangping unit in central China extends the known extent of granulite-facies metamorphism in the Tongbai Orogen. Evidence for this granulite facies event is preserved in coronitic and symplectitic textures developed in the meta-troctolites enclaves. The primary assemblage comprises olivine and plagioclase with minor orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, spinel and amphibole. The late magmatic stage comprising an orthopyroxene (Opx1) corona around olivine and clinopyroxene corona around spinel formed by reaction of cumulus and intercumulus phases with trapped melt at around 1040–1060°C near the solidus. During troctolite cooling, metamorphic solid-state replacement of primary olivine and plagioclase produced orthopyroxene (Opx1)/clinopyroxene (Cpx1) + vermicular spinel (Sp1) symplectite, followed by an inclusion-free amphibole (Amp1) layer surrounded by amphibole + spinel symplectite (Amp2 + Sp2). Microstructural, pseudosection and mineral isopleth analysis coupled with prominent compositional zoning in the Opx1 corona and chrome-rich spinel (Cr-Sp) suggests that the symplectites formed by diffusion-controlled solid-state replacement at the interface of reactant minerals, probably during cooling to granulite-facies conditions of ~820–880°C and 6.7–7.0 kbar. U–Pb dates of rare metamorphic zircon, as indicated by growth zonation and identification of metamorphic minerals enclosed in grains by Raman probe, are ca. 450 Ma. The reaction textures record the transition from late magmatic to granulite-facies metamorphism with the heat supplied by magma upwelling at the base of Erlangping arc triggered by extension of Erlangping back-arc. A series of 18 ultramafic mantle xenoliths from the Orapa and Letlhakane mines containing both garnet and spinel were investigated petrographically and by means of classical and multi-equilibrium geothermobarometry in order to understand their P–T evolution and infer tectonic processes consistent with that evolution, assuming that samples from the shallow subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM), may have remained cool enough to preserve memory of its formation. Samples broadly classify into peridotites, mainly harzburgites, and pyroxenites, mainly (olivine-) websterites with less than 15 vol% olivine. The websterites all show thin garnet coronas around xenomorphic spinel clusters and often coarse garnet and very fine spinel exsolving from pyroxenes. Classical geothermobarometry results vary consistently between the 40 mW/m2 geotherm at high pressures and the 50 mW/m2 geotherm at lower pressures but partly fail the reliability test indicating some degree of disequilibrium, particularly, as may be expected, toward lower P and T. Eleven samples were analyzed in detail for mineral modes, and pseudosections were calculated for the four compositionally most extreme samples. All four samples show systematic divergence of the mode and composition isopleths indicating overall chemical disequilibrium, but partial isopleth convergence in two distinct P–T regions that were interpreted as the main equilibration stage and a stage of late 'freeze-in' of a few composition isopleths at lower temperature and higher pressure. Specifically, the P–T changes between stage 1 and stage 2 were from 900°C and 13 kbar to 750°C and 23 kbar for a websterite and from 850°C and 24 kbar to 730°C and 33 kbar for a harzburgite. For an olivine-orthopyroxenite and -clinopyroxenite the change was from 910°C, 17 kbar and 770°C, 17 kbar for stage 1, respectively, to less well-constrained conditions for stage 2 of 650°C, 36 kbar and 630°C, 20 kbar, respectively. This interpretation of a protracted or stepwise freeze-in along a P–T path holds even after considering thermodynamic, analytical and, as far as possible, geological uncertainties. The result is consistent with a 'subcretion' or 'buoyant subduction' model for the formation of the SCLM, specifically with the down-drag of an already subcreted lithospheric platelet by a subsequently arriving platelet. Elucidating the origin, composition and physical properties of primary kimberlite melts is crucial to our understanding of their source, petrogenesis, ascent mechanisms and ultimately the origin of diamonds. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of olivine, which is one of the most abundant minerals in kimberlites with xenocrystic, metamorphic (mantle) and magmatic origins. Olivine is one of the earliest minerals to crystallise in kimberlite magmas, and the presence of ubiquitous zoning (e.g. cores, internal zones, transitional zones, rims, rinds, outmost rinds) and different generations (i.e. primary, pseudosecondary and secondary) of crystal/melt/fluid inclusions in euhedral olivine grains has been shown to provide fundamental insights into the composition and evolution of kimberlite melts. In this contribution, we review and evaluate the following: (1) the widely accepted notion that kimberlite olivine has two distinct origins—xenocrystic and magmatic. We present detailed electron microprobeX-ray element maps of well-preserved and zoned euhedral olivine microcrysts from the Koala and Mark (Lac de Gras, Canada) and Udachnaya-East (Siberia, Russia) kimberlites to show that the cores of olivine occasionally adopt euhedral shapes, which is commonly defined by the distribution of Ni. We present a scenario in which mantle olivine was recrystallised by the early (or proto-) kimberlite melt/fluid infiltrating through the lithospheric mantle to form euhedral 'pyrocrysts' (i.e. olivine that formed via re-crystallisation in the mantle in the presence of a melt), which in turn become cores for the subsequent crystallisation of magmatic olivine during kimberlite magma ascent and emplacement. (2) The evolution of ideas using different geochemical, petrological, experimental and melt inclusion approaches to constrain the composition of the primary/parental kimberlite melt. Based on our assessment of available data, in particular using melt inclusions, we propose that kimberlites originated from melts that were initially Si-poor, and Na-K-F-Cl-P-S-bearing and Ca-Mg-carbonate-rich. With this model composition for the primary/parental kimberlite melt considered, we emphasise the implications for the evolution of olivine and its role in the kimberlite petrogenesis. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive model outlining the key stages involved in the petrogenesis of kimberlites, ranging from the generation of the proto kimberlite melt in the mantle, its interaction with mantle silicates during ascent, the role of liquid immiscibility in driving magma differentiation and CO2 degassing and its emplacement and modification in the crust. The chemical characteristics of magmatic Ni–Cu sulfide deposits in orogenic settings differ from those in cratons as they are characterized by extensive alteration, presence of hydrous minerals and typical normal mantle sulfur isotopes. How these characteristics are related to the mode of formation of the Ni–Cu sulfide deposits is still unknown. Here, we present petrological and mineralogical investigations of the Hongqiling Ni–Cu sulfide deposit, a typical representative of such numerous deposits in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Observations at various scales of field outcrops, hand specimens, thin sections and microscopes reveal that alterations are selectively exposed in silicate minerals, particularly olivine and pyroxenes that are close to ore bodies and sulfides. Such selective alteration is also related to sulfide type and abundance, and ore texture in the rocks/ores. It is worth noting that alteration of olivine and pyroxenes becomes weak when hydrous minerals (hornblende and phlogopite) are present. Profile analyses demonstrate that the olivine grains enclosed in or in contact with sulfides have compositional zonation with Fe, Mn, Sc and Zn concentrations higher when closer to the contacts with sulfides relative to the cores and contacts with other silicates, while those grains in sulfide-barren rocks show relatively homogeneous compositions. Similarly, the hornblende grains in contact with sulfide show distinct compositional variations. Sulfides in the rocks and ores are all free of alteration and have mantle-like sulfur isotopic compositions (pyrrhotite δ34S = −1.53 to 0.38‰; pentlandite δ34S = −1.28 to 0.25‰; chalcopyrite δ34S = −1.77 to 0.24‰). These features suggest that the selective alterations occurring in early crystallized phases were induced by sulfide melt intrusion and crystallization, instead of late-stage processes as previously thought. The sulfide melts segregated at the early stage of the magma evolution were presumably hydrous and buoyant in the silicate magma and therefore were transported upward and penetrated into silicate grains. The hydrous fluids were independent of the subducted material and metamorphic origin, and contained no significant crustal component in the late Triassic. Finally, when the sulfides crystallized, fluids would be released from the sulfide melts to hydrate surrounding mineral phases and rocks, because sulfides theoretically don't accommodate hydrous components. The fluids also enhanced compositional exchanges between sulfides and silicates and accounted for the crystallization of hydrous minerals. From this perspective, fluids play a critical role in sulfide melt transportation and silicate compositional alteration, and selective alteration can be considered as a significant indicator of mineralization and exploration in mafic-ultramafic intrusions. In the Lac de Gras (LDG) kimberlite field, Northwest Territories, Canada, coherent kimberlites (CKs) occur as tabular dykes, pipe-shaped diatremes, and irregular bodies without well-defined geometries. Combining the morphology of CK bodies with the occurrence of fragmented olivine microcrysts allows distinction of four CK types at LDG: (1) dykes with no broken olivine; (2) CK without well-defined but probable sheet geometry and no broken olivine; (3) pipe-filling CK (pfCK) with abundant broken olivine and (4) pfCK with no broken olivine. These features suggest an intrusive origin for type 1 and, probably, type 2 CK; a high-energy extrusive emplacement for CK type 3 and a low-energy intrusive or extrusive emplacement for the CK type 4. Here, we compare petrographic and whole-rock, olivine and spinel compositional data for high-energy extrusive pfCK, low-energy pfCK and intrusive CK units to understand the factors controlling their variable emplacement styles. Extrusive CK contain more abundant groundmass phlogopite and monticellite, lower carbonate/silicate mineral abundance ratios and significantly lower dolomite and pleonaste-spinel abundances compared to intrusive CK. This indicates greater CO2 loss and higher H2O/CO2 in the melt phase for the extrusive CK during emplacement. Lower incompatible element concentrations in the extrusive CKs and different chromite Ti# and olivine rim Mg# indicate derivation from distinct primitive melt compositions. The extrusive CK feature higher ɛNdi and marginally higher ɛHfi compositions than the intrusive CK, pointing to derivation from distinct sources. These findings strongly imply that distinct primary melt compositions were largely responsible for the differences in emplacement styles of CK at LDG. Low-energy pfCKs have similar olivine rim Mg#, chromite Ti# and, hence, primitive melt compositions to the high-energy extrusive CK samples. Their marginally different emplacement styles may depend on local factors, such as changing stress regimes, or slightly different volatile concentrations. Both types of pfCK might reflect the waning stages of volcanic sequences resulting from the eruption of a segregated magma column that started with pipe excavation and the explosive emplacement of gas-rich magma (volcaniclastic kimberlite), followed by the less energetic emplacement of melt-rich magma (pfCK). This hypothesis underscores different primary melt compositions for dyke vs pipe-forming (and filling) kimberlites and hence a fundamental primary melt control on the explosivity of kimberlites. Magma differentiation in arc settings has usually been attributed to an interplay of processes (fractional crystallization, assimilation, and magma mixing). Homogeneous fractional crystallization has been widely used to model the magmatic evolution of volcanic systems in arc settings due to its simplicity, even though boundary layer fractionation (BLF) has been proposed as a preponderant process of differentiation in hydrous magmatic systems. Both models produce distinct compositional paths and the application of the wrong model yields erroneous estimates of parameters like pressure–temperature-H2O conditions and primary melt compositions. Melt inclusion (MI) populations corrected for post-entrapment processes have the potential to help discriminate between these two types of fractional crystallization, as their compositions are not affected by crystal accumulation and should capture the magmatic evolution as crystallization occurs. In this study, olivine-hosted MIs are used to assess the differentiation trends of basic arc magmas in northern Japan. Differentiation trends from five arc volcanic systems in northern Japan show that BLF is ubiquitous. Homogeneous fractionation models are unable to explain the liquid lines of descent of minor elements, like TiO2 and P2O5. To reproduce these differentiation trends, the presence of accessory phases like titanomagnetite or apatite are required, which in many cases are not equilibrated by the melt or need to be fractionated in amounts that are incompatible with homogeneous fractionation. The prevalence of BLF in all studied arc magmas of northern Japan indicates that solidification fronts are key environments in the crustal evolution of some hydrous subduction zone magmas. Olivine is an important mineral in mafic–ultramafic rocks and records various crustal and mantle processes in basaltic magma. Generally, phosphorus (P) is immobile in olivine and its zoning tends to record magmatic processes. In contrast, lithium (Li) is one of the most mobile elements in olivine and tends to be re-distributed by postcumulus to hydrothermal processes. This study reports coupled Li-P oscillatory and sector zoning in cumulus olivine (Fo > 80 mol%) from magmatic Ni-Cu deposits in northwest China. The close to 1:1 relationship between Li + Na cation and P cation in olivine suggests P substitutes for slowly diffusing Si at the tetrahedral site and Li (Na) substitutes for Mg at the octahedral metal site. The preservation of such coupled Li-P zoning suggests that the charge-balanced–controlled substitution of Li+P5+ for Mg2+Si4+, producing a member of the Li(Fe)PO4 structure, may cause sluggish Li diffusion in olivine. The Li-P zoning is uncorrelated to other elements (Fe, Mg, Cr, Al, Ca, Ti, V, Ni, Zn, Mn, Co, and Sc). The Ca abundances in cumulus olivine are significantly depleted relative to those in volcanic olivine and modeled for olivine using the rhyolite–MELTS program, whereas the Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Ni, and Co contents show no signs of depletion. The Cr and Al contents in high Fo olivine are lower than those in volcanic olivine with a similar Fo value. The depletions in Ca, Cr, and Al (both divalent and trivalent cations) have been attributed to post-crystallization re-equilibration processes. We suggest that the selective Ca-Cr depletion in olivine resulted from re-equilibration between olivine and clinopyroxene–orthopyroxene–spinel–melts at the postcumulus stage, whereas the Al content variation in olivine is likely controlled by olivine–spinel (pyroxene) re-equilibration. Olivine fractionation modeling results reveal that Co content in both olivine and sulfides changes slightly during evolution, whereas the olivine Ni/Co ratio decreases dramatically from 30 (at Fo90) to 4 (Fo80). These are consistent with the variation of Ni and Co contents in olivine from sulfide-barren rocks but cannot explain the strong positive Ni-Co correlation observed in olivine from the sulfide-bearing rocks. The considerable increase in the Ni/Co ratio in olivine coexisting with the high Ni tenor sulfide compared with the slight increase of the Ni/Co ratio in olivine coexisting with moderate-low Ni tenor sulfide strongly suggests that the Ni and Co contents and Ni/Co ratio in olivine from the mineralized rocks were the results of olivine–sulfide interaction. The olivine Fe/Zn and Mn/Zn ratios show little difference between sulfide-barren and sulfide-rich rocks, but these ratios decrease considerably with the decreasing Fo values. Overall, the study suggests that elements (Ca, Cr, Al, Mg, Fe, Ni, Co, Zn, etc.) diffuse faster than P have been re-distributed in cumulus olivine by re-equilibration processes, modifying the elemental content and inter-element ratios in olivine. Petrographic and chemical analysis of scoria samples collected during the 1959 Kīlauea summit eruption illustrates the progress of thermal and chemical homogenization of the melts, and the gradual growth and/or re-equilibration of olivine phenocrysts, over the course of the eruption. Glass compositions show that thermal equilibration was largely complete within the span of the eruption, whereas chemical homogenization was a work in progress. The olivine phenocryst population, known to contain conspicuous antecrystic components, is also hybrid within the euhedral population. The bulk of the olivine reached the level of the erupting magma on November 18–19, 1959. Zoning patterns in olivine phenocrysts show that initially unzoned grains developed normal zoning by the end of the eruption. Reverse zoning in relatively Fe-rich olivine phenocrysts (interpreted as cognate to the stored magma) was progressively eliminated from November 21 to December 19, 1959, by diffusive re-equilibration between crystals and melt. Toward the end of the eruption, the only olivine composition in direct contact with the melt was Fo84–86, with the original rim compositional heterogeneity gone in 4–5 weeks' time. Activity in December 1959 differed from that in November, as high fountaining events were more closely spaced and almost all samples were picritic, with bulk MgO ≥16·5 wt%. Three different levels were in play during the 1959 eruption: a deep source for high-MgO melts and forsteritic (Fo87–89) olivines, an intermediate source for the bulk of the stored magma, and a shallower source for the most differentiated magma. This model is consistent with geophysical, petrological and chemical observations. Comparison of the 1959 eruption with results from older explosive deposits suggests that stored and recharge melts and olivine from the deeper parts of Kīlauea's plumbing are similar in composition to those observed or inferred in the 1959 eruption, so they behave similarly during extrusive and explosive periods alike. Olivine (Fo75-91) with spinel inclusions (Cr# 10–61) in basaltic lavas/tephras from the off-rift Snæfellsnes Volcanic Zone in Iceland record the chemistry, temperature and oxygen fugacity of fractionating magmas. After a detailed assessment of equilibrium conditions, crystallization temperatures and oxygen fugacity can be calculated from the composition of homogeneous Cr-spinel and Al-chromite inclusions in olivine phenocrysts. Geologically meaningful results can occasionally be obtained when homogenous spinel is enclosed in mildly zoned olivine and K DMg-Fe [(Mg/Fe)olivine/(Mg/Fe2+)spinel] is within the range for homogenous spinel in homogeneous olivine (3.5–4.3 for our samples). Spinel in normal zoned Fo84.7–90.9 olivine records the primitive stages of magma fractionation and has crystallized from clinopyroxene-free primitive melts, probably at Moho depth and/or below. Discrepancies between Tol-liq (Mg-Fe2+ diffusion sensitive) and TAL (diffusion insensitive) suggest that some primitive olivines experienced magma mixing, completely overprinting their Fo content. Consequentially, Tol-liq in primitive olivines occasionally records residence rather than crystallization conditions. Temperature (1187–1317°C) gradually decreases across normal zoned Fo84.7–90.9 olivine and controls f O2 (Δlog f O2 (QFM) −0.6 ± 0.2). Recharge-related primitive Fo83.8–86.8 mantles of reverse zoned olivine contain the most primitive Cr-spinel linked to crustal magma storage zones. These spinels are mostly antecrysts with high Cr# (41.1–47.9) similar to spinel in normal zoned olivines that were captured by olivine and equilibrated in terms of Mg-Fe2+. A rare olivine macrocryst crystallized alongside clinopyroxene (wehrlite) and includes abundant homogeneous Al-rich Cr-spinels. These are unique because they appear to record closed-system fractional crystallization rather than magma mixing and because they show that Cr-poor, Al-rich spinel crystallized alongside clinopyroxene. The macrocryst olivine–spinel pairs record lower crustal crystal mush conditions with f O2 around the QFM buffer and Tol-liq of ∼1200°C, similar to recharge-related mantles of reverse zoned olivine. More evolved compositions occur in the cores of reverse zoned olivine (Fo75-85) that contain Cr-spinel, Fe-spinel and Al-magnetite. Contrary to spinel in more primitive olivine, these compositions are diverse and follow increasing 100Fe3+/(Cr+Al+Fe3+) of 12.3 to 54.8 and TiO2 (3.3 to 14.7 wt %) at decreasing Mg# (57.4 to 24.1) and Cr# (30.4 to 9.9) and rapidly increasing oxygen fugacities (Δlog f O2 (QFM) +0.2 to +2.0) over only a limited temperature decrease (Tol-liq: 1190 to 1145°C). These compositions span the 'spinel gap' and are extremely rare globally. Their preservation is probably related to high-temperature crystallization followed by rapid cooling. These compositions occur at two of the four investigated volcanic centres (Búðahraun and Berserkjahraun) and indicate a strong influence of crustal magmatic processes on crystal composition and f O2, which is absent in the other two locations (Ólafsvíkurenni and Nykurhraun). Spinel and olivine compositions support the tectonically controlled decompression melting of a fertile peridotitic source at elevated mantle temperatures relative to MORB and more reducing conditions than other off-rift magmatism in Iceland. Cores recovered by International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 345 to the Hess Deep Rift (HDR) include lower crustal cumulates from the East Pacific Rise (EPR) and primitive basalts from the Cocos–Nazca Rift (CNR). This study presents major and trace element compositions of channel samples—the continuous strips of rock removed during core splitting—from this expedition. Consistently high Eu/Eu* anomalies (1·37–5·22) and strong correlations among major element oxides in samples of cumulates indicate that rock composition at the meter scale is controlled by the accumulation and segregation of plagioclase and olivine. However, constant Mg# (82·22 ± 0·66) among 13 samples through a ∼50 m interval suggests that this cumulus was host to percolating, replenishing melt(s). Modeling finds this rock composition to be in equilibrium with melts having Mg# = 58–61. This is identical to the mean value of EPR lavas (57·7 ± 6·2) and suggests that melt buffering by permeable crystal mush is a common and important process in controlling mid-ocean ridge basalt compositions at fast-spreading ocean centers. Analyses of the cumulates provide the most comprehensive composition of in situ , fast-spreading lower oceanic crust currently available. These are compiled with analyses of gabbros, dikes, and lavas from across the HDR to calculate the bulk composition of fast-spreading oceanic crust produced at the equatorial EPR. This bulk composition is strikingly similar to the composition of the primitive basalts from the CNR, and these compositions have nearly identical modeled fractional crystallization histories. Lower abundances of incompatible elements in the primitive basalt suggest that CNR magmatism is the result of the resumption of decompression melting in mantle that previously produced EPR crust. However, higher abundances of chalcophile elements in the CNR basalt point to a diversity of mantle melts that is not evident in calculations of the composition of bulk oceanic crust. Magnetite stability in ultramafic systems undergoing subduction plays a major role in controlling redox states of the fluids liberated upon dehydration reactions, as well as of residual rocks. Despite their relevance for the evaluation of the redox conditions, the systematics and geochemistry of oxide minerals have remained poorly constrained in subducted ultramafic rocks. Here, we present a detailed petrological and geochemical study of magnetite in hydrous ultramafic rocks from Cerro del Almirez (Spain). Our results indicate that prograde to peak magnetite, ilmenite–hematite solid solution minerals, and sulfides coexist in both antigorite-serpentinite and chlorite-harzburgite at c. 670 °C and 1·6 GPa, displaying successive crystallization stages, each characterized by specific mineral compositions. In antigorite-serpentinite, magnetite inherited from seafloor hydration and recrystallized during subduction has moderate Cr (Cr2O3 < 10 wt%) and low Al and V concentrations. In chlorite-harzburgite, polygonal magnetite is in textural equilibrium with olivine, orthopyroxene, chlorite, pentlandite, and ilmenite–hematite solid solution minerals. The Cr2O3 contents of this magnetite are up to 19 wt%, higher than any magnetite data obtained for antigorite-serpentinite, along with higher Al and V, derived from antigorite breakdown, and lower Mn concentrations. This polygonal magnetite displays conspicuous core to rim zoning as recognized on elemental maps. Cr–V–Al–Fe3+ mass-balance calculations, assuming conservative behavior of total Fe3+ and Al, were employed to model magnetite compositions and modes in the partially dehydrated product chlorite-harzburgite starting from antigorite-serpentinite, as well as in the serpentinite protolith starting from the chlorite-harzburgite. The model results disagree with measured Cr and V compositions in magnetite from antigorite-serpentinites and chlorite-harzburgites. This indicates that these two rock types had different initial bulk compositions and thus cannot be directly compared. Our mass-balance analysis also reveals that new magnetite formation is required across the antigorite-breakdown reaction to account for the mass conservation of fluid-immobile elements such as Cr–V–Al–Fe3+. Complete recrystallization and formation of new magnetite in equilibrium with peak olivine (Mg# 89–91), chlorite (Mg# ∼95), orthopyroxene (Mg# 90–91), and pentlandite buffer the released fluid to redox conditions of ∼1 log unit above the quartz–fayalite–magnetite buffer. This is consistent with the observation that the Fe–Ti solid solution minerals (hemo-ilmenite and ilmeno-hematite) crystallized as homogeneous phases and exsolved upon exhumation and cooling. We conclude that antigorite-dehydration reaction fluids carry only a moderate redox budget and therefore may not be the only reason why the magmas are comparatively oxidized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Quaternary Tarosero volcano is situated in the East African Rift of northern Tanzania and mainly consists of trachyte lavas and some trachytic tuffs. In addition, there are minor occurrences of extrusive basalts, andesites and latites, as well as peralkaline trachytes, olivine trachytes and phonolites. Some of the peralkaline phonolites contain interstitial eudialyte, making Tarosero one of the few known occurrences for extrusive agpaitic rocks. This study investigates the genetic relationships between the various rock types and focuses on the peculiar formation conditions of the extrusive agpaitic rocks using a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, mineral chemistry, petrography, thermodynamic calculations, and major and trace element modelling. The Tarosero rocks formed at redox conditions around or below the fayalite–magnetite–quartz buffer (FMQ). During multi-level magmatic fractionation at depths between ∼40 km and the shallow crust, temperature decreased from >1100 °C at near-liquidus conditions in the basalts to ∼700 °C in the peralkaline residue. Fractional crystallization models and trace element characteristics do not indicate a simple genetic relationship between the trachytes and the other rock types at Tarosero. However, the genetic relationships between the primitive basalts and the intermediate latites can be explained by high-pressure fractional crystallization of olivine + clinopyroxene + magnetite + plagioclase + apatite. Further fractionation of these mineral phases in addition to amphibole and minor ilmenite led to the evolution towards the peralkaline trachytes and phonolites. The eudialyte-bearing varieties of the peralkaline phonolites required additional low-pressure fractionation of alkali feldspar and minor magnetite, amphibole and apatite. In contrast to the peralkaline trachytes and phonolites, the peralkaline olivine trachytes contain olivine instead of amphibole, thus indicating a magma evolution at even lower pressure conditions. They can be modelled as a derivation from the latites by fractional crystallization of plagioclase, clinopyroxene, magnetite and olivine. In general, agpaitic magmas evolve under closed-system conditions, which impede the escape of volatile phases. In the case of the extrusive agpaitic rocks at Tarosero, the early exsolution of fluids and halogens was prevented by a low water activity. This resulted in high concentrations of rare earth elements (REE) and other high field strength elements (HFSE) and the formation of eudialyte in the most evolved peralkaline phonolites. Within the peralkaline rock suite, the peralkaline olivine trachytes contain the lowest HFSE and REE concentrations, consistent with mineralogical evidence for formation at a relatively high water activity. The lack of amphibole fractionation, which can act as a water buffer of the melt, as well as the evolution at relatively low-pressure conditions caused the early exsolution of fluids and loss of water-soluble elements. Melt inclusions represent a unique tool to reconstruct the composition and chemical evolution of silicate melts in magmatic systems. Laser-ablation inductively-coupled-plasma mass-spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is the most commonly used microanalytical technique to analyse crystallized melt inclusions without prior re-homogenization. Well-preserved melt inclusions can be quantified by subtracting the contribution of co-ablated host with a carefully selected internal standard. However, post-entrapment compositional re-equilibration commonly renders this task difficult, to the same degree as it would affect any quantification after prior re-homogenization. In this study, we first examine well-preserved, crystallized melt inclusions hosted in olivine, plagioclase, apatite, clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene from porphyry dikes and volcanic rocks to test various quantification strategies and evaluate the associated uncertainties, and then we use these strategies to quantify coarsely crystallized melt inclusions from gabbroic rocks at Marble Canyon (USA) and Laiyuan (China) that experienced severe post-entrapment modifications due to relatively slow cooling rates. The results demonstrate that even for well-preserved melt inclusions hosted in chemically complex minerals the uncertainty related to inclusion–host deconvolution can be rather high (up to 30‒50% for host-incompatible trace elements significantly above their limits of detection), though other uncertainties inherent to LA-ICP-MS analysis are relatively small (typically ≤5‒10%). The deconvolution-related uncertainty can be minimized to ca. 10% by (1) choosing whole rocks that are fresh and representative of magmatic liquids, (2) choosing the smallest possible spot size to ablate the melt inclusions, and (3) choosing a host endmember that is compositionally as similar as possible to the one ablated together with the inclusion. Results of coarsely crystallized melt inclusions from gabbroic rocks suggest that the range of elements affected by post-entrapment re-equilibration varies from intrusion to intrusion. Olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Marble Canyon appear to have diffusively lost Fe, Ti and Ca, whereas those from Laiyuan lost Fe, Na, Al, Ca, Ti and Y and gained V. However, the relative abundances of K, P, Rb, Sr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Cs, Ba, Ce, Ta, Pb, Th, U and ±Cu appear unchanged. Plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions from Marble Canyon are relatively well-preserved, whereas those from Laiyuan lost significant amounts of Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Rb and Co. Apatite-hosted melt inclusions seem well preserved with regard to most elements except for Cu. These results suggest that despite the post-entrapment modification of certain element concentrations and the associated difficulties in melt inclusion quantification, information on the approximate abundances of other elements that are invaluable for petrogenetic and metallogenic studies can still be retrieved from melt inclusions in gabbroic rocks using the LA-ICP-MS technique. Replacive symplectites (vermicular intergrowths of two or more minerals) are an important feature of layered igneous intrusions, recording evidence of late-stage reactions between interstitial liquid and crystals. They are common throughout the Layered Series of the 564 Ma Sept Iles layered intrusion in Quebec, Canada, and fall into three types: oxy-symplectites, 'Type I' symplectites, and 'Type II' symplectites. Oxy-symplectites are comprised of magnetite and orthopyroxene, nucleate on olivine primocrysts, and form via the reaction Olivine + O2 → Orthopyroxene + Magnetite; Type I symplectites (of which there are 3 distinct categories) are comprised of anorthitic plagioclase with pyroxene, amphibole, or olivine vermicules, grow from primocryst oxide grains, and replace primocryst plagioclase; and Type II symplectites (of which there are 2 distinct categories) are comprised of anorthitic plagioclase with orthopyroxene ± amphibole vermicules, grow from primocryst olivine grains, and replace primocryst plagioclase. Rare symplectites composed of biotite and plagioclase are also present. Symplectite growth occurred at 700–1030°C with pressure constraints of 1–2 kbar. We propose that Type I symplectites, and some Type II symplectites, formed from the interaction of primocrysts with residual Fe-rich liquid as a consequence of differential loss of an immiscible Si-rich liquid conjugate from the crystal mush. However, redistribution and concentration of hydrous fluids in incompletely solidified rock, or an increase in water activity of the interstitial melt, may be more plausible processes responsible for the formation of replacive symplectites comprising abundant hydrous mineral assemblages. Olivine is the most abundant phase in kimberlites and is stable throughout most of the crystallization sequence, thus providing an extensive record of kimberlite petrogenesis. To better constrain the composition, evolution, and source of kimberlites we present a detailed petrographic and geochemical study of olivine from multiple dyke, sill, and root zone kimberlites in the Kimberley cluster (South Africa). Olivine grains in these kimberlites are zoned, with a central core, a rim overgrowth, and occasionally an external rind. Additional 'internal' and 'transitional' zones may occur between the core and rim, and some samples of root zone kimberlites contain a late generation of high-Mg olivine in cross-cutting veins. Olivine records widespread pre-ascent (proto-)kimberlite metasomatism in the mantle including the following features: (1) relatively Fe-rich (Mg# <89) olivine cores interpreted to derive from the disaggregation of kimberlite-related megacrysts (20 % of cores); (2) Mg–Ca-rich olivine cores (Mg# >89; >0·05 wt% CaO) suggested to be sourced from neoblasts in sheared peridotites (25 % of cores); (3) transitional zones between cores and rims probably formed by partial re-equilibration of xenocrysts (now cores) with a previous pulse of kimberlite melt (i.e. compositionally heterogeneous xenocrysts); (4) olivine from the Wesselton water tunnel sills, internal zones (I), and low-Mg# rims, which crystallized from a kimberlite melt that underwent olivine fractionation and stalled within the shallow lithospheric mantle. Magmatic crystallization begins with internal olivine zones (II), which are common but not ubiquitous in the Kimberley olivine. These zones are euhedral, contain rare inclusions of chromite, and have a higher Mg# (90·0 ± 0·5), NiO, and Cr2O3 contents, but are depleted in CaO compared with the rims. Internal olivine zones (II) are interpreted to crystallize from a primitive kimberlite melt during its ascent and transport of olivine toward the surface. Their compositions suggest assimilation of peridotitic material (particularly orthopyroxene) and potentially sulfides prior to or during crystallization. Comparison of internal zones (II) with liquidus olivine from other mantle-derived carbonate-bearing magmas (i.e. orangeites, ultramafic lamprophyres, melilitites) shows that low (100×) Mn/Fe (∼1·2), very low Ca/Fe (∼0·6), and moderate Ni/Mg ratios (∼1·1) appear to be the hallmarks of olivine in melts derived from carbonate-bearing garnet-peridotite sources. Olivine rims display features indicative of magmatic crystallization, which are typical of olivine rims in kimberlites worldwide; that is, primary inclusions of chromite, Mg-ilmenite and rutile, homogeneous Mg# (88·8 ± 0·3), decreasing Ni and Cr, and increasing Ca and Mn. Rinds and high-Mg olivine are characterized by extreme Mg–Ca–Mn enrichment and Ni depletion, and textural relationships indicate that these zones represent replacement of pre-existing olivine, with some new crystallization of rinds. These zones probably precipitated from evolved, oxidized, and relatively low-temperature kimberlite fluids after crustal emplacement. In summary, this study demonstrates the utility of combined petrography and olivine geochemistry to trace the evolution of kimberlite magmatic systems from early metasomatism of the lithospheric mantle by (proto-)kimberlite melts, to crystallization at different depths en route to surface, and finally late-stage deuteric or hydrothermal fluid alteration after crustal emplacement. The island of Pantelleria, located in the Sicily Channel Rift Zone (Italy), has been the site of violent peralkaline silicic magmatism alternating with minor effusive to low-intensity Strombolian eruptions of basaltic composition. The basaltic rock suites exposed on the island were sampled to investigate the plumbing system dynamics through the study of chemical stratigraphy and temporal records of olivine crystals. Our petrographic and geochemical observations, together with the compositional variability of olivine, suggest different evolutionary histories for basaltic magmas erupted over two major periods divided by the ∼45 ka Green Tuff (GT) eruption. Core-to-rim compositional traverses across olivine crystals document different types of zoning. We recognized olivine zones affected by Fo oscillations at very fine scales in the inner cores, rims and/or in intermediate portions of crystals and used them to reconstruct the residence and passage of crystals through different magmatic environments, with P–T –ƒO2 and compositional characteristics constrained by thermodynamic modeling. The sequence of magmatic environments evidenced by olivine zoning indicate that the pre-GT volcanic period was dominated by injection at shallow crustal levels (∼300–200 MPa) of primitive melts, initially moving from a deep storage zone at the crust-mantle boundary. Supply of this magma significantly decreased after the GT eruption, while the dynamics of magma transfer within the upper portion of the plumbing system were greatly enhanced. The diffusive relaxation of olivine zoning provided the timing of storage and migration of a crystal through different environments. For magmas feeding the ancient (>45 ka) basaltic activity we retrieved transfer histories that are much longer (up to ∼3 years) if compared with those calculated for the post-GT basalts (1–9 months). The compositional and temporal dataset presented in this study supports the idea that the GT eruption and the subsequent collapse of the volcanic edifice could have caused major changes to the internal structural setting of Pantelleria, creating more favorable conditions for the migration of magmas in the upper portions of the plumbing system. The 1800 Ma monzonitic to syenitic Raftsund intrusion is the largest intrusive body of the Lofoten–Vesterålen anorthosite–mangerite–charnockite–granite (AMCG) suite. It is composed of three units that can be differentiated based on their textures. This study focuses on the most voluminous, predominantly equigranular, unit consisting of a pigeonite–augite syenite and a fayalite–augite monzonite. The pigeonite–augite syenite is associated with centimeter-scale to hundred-meter scale occurrences of Fe–Ti–P-rich rocks that display sharp to gradational contacts with the surrounding syenite. Iron–Ti–P-rich rocks consist of augite, Fe-rich olivine ± partly inverted pigeonite, apatite, ilmenite, titanomagnetite and sparse pyrrhotite, hornblende and biotite. Partly resorbed ternary feldspar crystals are common toward the contact with the syenite. Microtextures, such as symplectites, encountered at the contact between the syenite and the Fe–Ti–P-rich rocks indicate local disequilibrium between the two rock types. The Fe–Ti–P-rich rocks show large compositional variations but overall are enriched in Ca, Zn, Sc and rare earth elements in addition to Fe, Ti and P compared with the host syenite. Field evidence, whole-rock compositions and textural relationships all suggest that that silicate–liquid immiscibility was involved in the genesis of the Fe–Ti–P-rich rocks. These are interpreted to represent Fe-rich unmixed melts, whereas the syenite is inferred to originate from the crystallization of conjugate Si-rich immiscible melt. The existence of an Fe-rich melt is further supported by the high trace element content of augite from the Fe–Ti–P-rich rocks, showing that they grew from a melt enriched in elements such as Sc and Ti. The fayalite–augite monzonite also displays textural and chemical evidence of silicate liquid immiscibility resulting in unusually variable Zr contents (few hundred ppm to more than 3000 ppm) and the presence of abundant zircon and allanite restricted to millimeter- to centimeter-scale Fe-rich mineral clusters. The most Fe-rich and Si-poor rocks are interpreted to represent the larger proportion of the Fe-rich melt. Liquid immiscibility can be identified at various scales in the pigeonite–augite syenite, from millimeter-size clusters to large-scale bodies, up to hundreds of meters in size, indicating various degrees of separation and coalescence of the Fe-rich melt in the intrusion. The immiscible liquids in the fayalite–augite monzonite consist of an emulsion, with small millimeter- to centimeter-scale droplets of Fe-rich melt, whereas in the pigeonite–augite syenite, Fe-rich melt pockets were able to coalesce and form larger pods. The difference between the two units either results from earlier onset of immiscibility in the pigeonite–augite syenite or reflects a difference in the degree of polymerization of the melt at the time of unmixing. This study emphasizes the importance of silicate–liquid immiscibility in the evolution of intermediate to felsic alkalic ferroan systems and provides a series of arguments that can be used to identify the process in such systems. The generation of Miocene–Pliocene post-collisional magmatic rocks in northern Tibet was coeval with surface uplift, meaning that understanding the petrogenesis of these rocks should provide clues to the mechanism of uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. However, the nature of the source(s) of Miocene–Pliocene post-collisional rocks is unresolved, especially for potassic–ultrapotassic rocks. This study focuses on 16 Ma olivine leucitites in the Hoh Xil Basin of northern Tibet, which display the lowest SiO2 (43·4–48·8 wt%) contents of all Miocene–Pliocene magmatic rocks in northern Tibet and have high MgO (4·85–8·57 wt%) contents and high K2O/Na2O (>1) ratios. Whole-rock geochemical compositions suggest that the olivine leucitites did not undergo significant fractional crystallization or crustal assimilation. All samples are enriched in large ion lithophile elements relative to high field strength elements, and they exhibit uniform whole-rock Sr–Nd isotope [(87Sr/86Sr)i = 0·7071–0·7077 and ε Nd(t) = −3·1 to −3·9] and olivine O isotope (5·8–6·6 ‰, mean of 6·2 ± 0·2 ‰, n = 21) compositions. We propose that the olivine leucitites were derived by low-degree partial melting of phlogopite-lherzolite in garnet-facies lithospheric mantle. Given the tectonic evolution of the Hoh Xil Basin and adjacent areas, we suggest that southward subduction of Asian (Qaidam block) lithosphere after India–Asia collision transferred potassium and other incompatible elements into the lithospheric mantle, forming the K-enriched mantle source of the Miocene–Pliocene potassic–ultrapotassic rocks. Removal of lower lithospheric mantle subsequently induced voluminous Miocene–Pliocene magmatism and generated >1 km surface uplift in the Hoh Xil Basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the feedback between antigorite dehydration reactions and fluid extraction mechanisms through the analysis of field-scale structures and microtextures formed by antigorite dehydration reactions producing olivine and talc in the Bergell intrusion contact aureole at Alpe Zocca (Malenco Unit, Northern Italy). The reactions, which resulted in the replacement of serpentinites by metaperidotites, occurred under quasi-static conditions. The main reaction front, which defines the equilibrium isograd, is an ∼150 m wide zone composed of variably reacted rocks with an irregular distribution at scales ranging from a few centimeters to a few meters. Veins composed of the prograde mineral assemblage occur downstream (<100 m) of this front. They are often surrounded by centimeter- to decimeter-scale dehydration reaction zones that propagate into the serpentinite wall-rock. Olivine in the metaperidotites and partially reacted serpentinites has a crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) correlated with the antigorite CPO, with [010]Ol axes parallel to [001]Atg. This CPO is accompanied by a shape-preferred orientation (SPO) that marks the foliation in both rock types. Olivine crystals in Ol–Tlc dehydration veins also have SPO and CPO that define a jackstraw texture within the plane of the vein. They are elongated parallel to [001] within the vein plane and have their [010]Ol axes normal to the vein. We interpret the olivine–talc assemblage in the veins as resulting from dehydration reactions at lower temperature than the equilibrium conditions owing to fluid extraction from the wall-rock into the veins. The jackstraw texture indicates fast kinetics, with the crystal orientation controlled by anisotropic growth under a fluid pressure gradient. We interpret the foliated metaperidotites as formed at near equilibrium conditions, with pervasive fluid extraction from the metaperidotite by viscous metamorphic compaction. Olivine CPO in these rocks may result from topotaxy, oriented growth in the presence of an anisotropic (foliation-controlled) fluid flow, and/or solid reorientation of the anisometric olivine crystals accommodated by the deformation of the weaker talc (± chlorite) matrix during compaction. The c.3·3 Ga Commondale komatiites located south of the Barberton greenstone belt in the Kaapvaal Craton are different from other komatiites, possessing compositional and textural features unique to this occurrence. Unlike almost all other known komatiite occurrences, they are not associated with komatiitic basalts or basalts. The komatiite flows are 0·5–25 m thick and are made up of a marginal zone of spinifex-textured and fine-grained aphyric rocks (low-Mg group) and an inner zone of olivine cumulates (high-Mg group), arranged in such a way to give highly symmetrical compositional profiles for many flows. Olivine is the dominant phase in all rocks, but orthopyroxene occurs as spinifex and elongate laths in the marginal zone. Clinopyroxene and plagioclase are entirely absent. The olivine cumulates formed from Mg-rich magma (36·1% MgO, 6·8% FeO) which caused inflation of the thicker flows. The maximum observed olivine composition in cores (Fo 96·6) is the highest recorded for any komatiite worldwide. The high-Mg magma would have erupted at a temperature close to 1670°C, the highest inferred temperature for an anhydrous terrestrial lava. The marginal zone is enriched in incompatible elements compared with the inner zone and formed by fractionation of the parental melt. However, all rock-types in the marginal zone are depleted in FeO (some as low as 3·5%) which could not have been derived by any primary magmatic process. The marginal zone rocks were modified by assimilation and/or alteration by seawater (or brine) components causing migration of iron and strong enrichment of sodium (up to 1·6 wt % Na2O) and chlorine (up to 2400 ppm). Zirconium has an identical distribution to sodium, with both elements greatly enriched above what would result from fractional crystallization, and may result from speciation of these elements at high temperature followed by post-crystallization alteration. Rare earth elements, Y and Nb have contents commensurate with fractionation of the primitive parental magma. Dendritic-textured olivine-rich rocks with orthopyroxene spinifex spatially and compositionally transitional between the marginal zone and the olivine cumulates resulted from interaction of the high temperature parental magma in the centre of the flows with the fractionated melt at the flow margins. A further manifestation of this association is the development of highly regular fine-scale (5–15 cm) layering (up to 45 layers) of alternating olivine cumulate and spinifex near the base of thick flows. This is overlain by olivine cumulates in which the melt/crystal-mush became arranged into a 3-dimensional network controlled by re-distribution of the trapped melt manifest by a spectacular knobbly texture in outcrop. Over 200 flow units are recognized and detailed chemical and mineralogical studies were carried out on drill cores intersecting 375 m of stratigraphy. The parental magma was highly depleted (in ppm Nb 0·017, Zr 1·18, total REE 1·7 and Gd/YbN=0·3, La/YbN=0·038) and although generally regarded to fall into the rare category of Al-enriched komatiites (AEKs), it is considered that these lavas are a unique class of their own of ultra-depleted komatiites. Relative to other AEKs the Commondale komatiites are both enriched in Al as well as being markedly depleted in Ti (390 ppm), giving rise to the extremely high Al2O3/TiO2 (81). The high temperature and low viscosity of the magma resulted in emplacement processes previously unrecognized in komatiites. The primary melt was derived by melting of mantle peridotite in equilibrium with olivine and orthopyroxene. The initial source was depleted in incompatible elements by small degrees of melting (3–4%) followed by high degrees of partial melting (70%) of the subsequent refractory source at 5 GPa (∼150 km). The 2·08 Ma, ∼2500 km3 Huckleberry Ridge Tuff (HRT) eruption, Yellowstone, generated two fall deposits and three ignimbrite members (A, B, C), accompanying a ∼95 x 65 km caldera collapse. Field data imply that the pre-A fall deposits took weeks to be erupted, then breaks of weeks to months occurred between members A and B, and years to decades between B and C. We present compositional and isotopic data from single silicic clasts (pumice or fiamme) in the three ignimbrite members, plus new data from co-eruptive mafic components to reconstruct the nature and evacuation history of the HRT crustal magmatic complex. Geochemical data, building on field characteristics, are used to group nine silicic clast types into seven compositional suites (A1-A3; B1; C1-C3) within their respective members A, B and C. Isotopic data are then added to define four magmatic systems that were tapped simultaneously and/or sequentially during the eruption. Systems 1 and 2 fed the initial fall deposits and then vented throughout member A, accompanied by trace amounts of mafic magma. In member A, volumetrically dominant system 1 is represented by a rhyolite suite (A1: 73·0–77·7 wt % SiO2, 450–1680 ppm Ba) plus a distinct low-silica rhyolite suite (A2: 69·2–71·6 wt % SiO2, >2500 ppm Ba). System 2 yielded only a low-Ba, high-silica rhyolite suite (A3: 76·7–77·4 wt % SiO2, ≤250 ppm Ba). Glass compositions in pumices from systems 1 and 2 show clustering, indicative of the same multiple melt-dominant bodies identified in the initial fall deposits and earliest ignimbrite. Member B samples define suite B1 (70·7–77·4 wt % SiO2, 540–3040 ppm Ba) derived from magmatic system 1 (but not 2) that had undergone mixing and reorganisation during the A: B time break, accompanying mafic magma inputs. Mafic scoriae erupted in upper member B cover similar compositions to the member A clasts, but extend over a much broader compositional range. Member C clast compositions reflect major changes during the B: C time break, including rejuvenation of magmatic system 2 (last seen in member A) as suite C3 (75·3–77·2 wt % SiO2, 100–410 ppm Ba), plus the appearance of two new suites with strong crustal signatures. Suite C2 is another rhyolite (74·7–77·6 wt % SiO2, with Ba decreasing with silica from 2840 to 470 ppm) that defines magmatic system 3. Suite C2 also shows clustered glass compositions, suggesting that multiple melt-dominant bodies were a repetitive feature of the HRT magmatic complex. Suite C1, in contrast, is dacite to rhyolite (65·6–75·0 wt % SiO2, with Ba increasing with silica from 750 to 1710 ppm) that defines magmatic system 4. Compositions from magmatic systems 1 and 2 dominantly reflect fractional crystallization, but include partial melting of cumulates related to earlier intrusions of the same mafic magmas as those syn-eruptively vented. Country rock assimilation was limited to minor amounts of a more radiogenic (with respect to Sr) evolved contaminant. In contrast, systems 3 and 4 show similar strongly crustal isotopic compositions (despite their differences in elemental composition) consistent with assimilation of Archean rocks via partial melts derived from cumulates associated with contrasting mafic lineages. System 3 links to the same HRT mafic compositions co-erupted in members A and B. In contrast, system 4 links to olivine tholeiite compositions erupted in the Yellowstone area before, sparsely during, and following the HRT itself. All four magmatic systems were housed beneath the HRT caldera area. Systems 1 and 2 were hosted in Archean crust that had been modified by Cretaceous/Eocene magmatism, whereas systems 3 and 4 were hosted within crust that retained Archean isotopic characteristics.
