Reproductive activities can incur various costs to breeding individuals in birds. One cost is that reproduction decreases survival probabilities of attendant individuals, which may have a major effect on population demography. During brood rearing, adults of precocial species usually make extensive movements to lead their young to sites with adequate food resources and dense cover. However, few studies have evaluated the effects of brood movement on attendant precocial adults. In this study, we tracked female Chinese Grouse during brood-rearing periods using radiotelemetry at Lianhuashan Nature Reserve, Gansu, China, during 2010-2012, to evaluate the effects of brood rearing and movement distances on females’ survival probabilities using known fate models in program MARK. All 41 females attempted to breed, and 30 females successfully hatched at least one chick; 11 failed during the incubation period. Although females with broods moved more extensively than females without broods, movement distances did not influence survival probabilities of attendant females. Seven females with broods were killed by predators, resulting in a lower survival probability (0.958 ± 0.016 weekly survival and 0.679 ± 0.099 through the 9-weeks brood-rearing periods) than for females without broods, which all survived the brood-rearing periods. Our results agree with the prediction of life history theory, which assumes that cost must correlate with reproduction. The extensive movement patterns found in this study might reflect a lack of suitable brood-rearing habitat near nest sites, which might be detrimental to chick survival and influence the persistence of this population. The relative ratio of the two main leukocyte types, heterophils (H) and lymphocytes (L), is known to change proportionally to the concentrations of stress hormones in the circulating blood. Thus, analysis of leukocyte profiles serves as a reliable proxy of stress in vertebrates, as high H/L ratios indicate stronger stress response. Moult and migration are among the most energetically demanding and nutritionally stressful processes in the annual cycle of wild birds. Although most birds separate these two activities in time, a moult-migration overlap has been reported for several avian species. The aim of this study was to examine whether overlapping energy requirements of moult and migration produce an increased organismal stress in a shorebird species, the Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago). For this purpose, we assessed leukocyte profiles and nutritional condition in more than 350 moulting and non-moulting snipe during autumn migration through central Europe. We found negative correlations between H/L ratios and different measures of condition, including size-corrected body mass, fat load, and plasma concentrations of triglycerides and total protein. However, no evidence was found for the effect of moult status on H/L ratios. Our study indicates that while migration in a poor nutritional state can be associated with elevated stress response, the process of feather replacement may not constitute a serious stress for migrating Common Snipe. We suggest that these results may help to explain the occurrence of moult-migration overlap in the Common Snipe and possibly in other avian species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of measurements of naturally occurring stable isotopes of the light elements C, N, H, O, S in avian tissues and their associated foodwebs has grown tremendously during the last 30 years. Three primary applications of this approach have been (1) the delineation of diets or trophic relationships and sources of nutrients to individuals or populations, (2) the assessment of the relative contributions of endogenously and exogenously derived nutrients to reproduction in birds that travel to breed, and, more recently, (3) the assignment to origin of migratory individuals. This paper will briefly summarize the roots of these theme areas and highlight the benefits of an isotope perspective. However, the primary focus of this paper is on key assumptions, misunderstandings, information gaps and the path ahead. Specific recommendations for future research are outlined for all of these theme areas. Finally, a plea is made for more constructive criticism in the field of isotopic applications to animal ecological studies, especially those involving birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of an endurance flight on the haematocrit, the percentage of packed red blood cells per blood volume, were examined within the framework of six possible factors explaining possible changes in the haematocrit. Two approaches were adopted: (1) the haematocrit was studied in four species of passerine birds which landed on an Italian island after having crossed the Mediterranean Sea on their spring migration in a non-stop flight; (2) the haematocrit was evaluated in six individual red knots after a flight of 1, 2, 4 and 10 h in a wind tunnel and the data thus obtained compared with data on resting birds with or without food. In the four passerine species, the haematocrit decreased from 51% in fat birds to 48% in lean birds. In lean birds, the haematocrit dropped from 48% in birds with well-developed breast muscles to 36% in birds with emaciated breast muscles. In the red knots, the haematocrit was dependent on body mass in flying and resting birds. The haematocrit decreased from about 51% pre-flight to about 49% within 1 h of flight and remained at this level for up to 10 h of flight. Taking the results from the passerines and the red knots together, it seems that the haematocrit drops by a few percentage points within 1 h after the onset of flight, decreases very slowly with decreasing body mass and decreases more steeply in very lean birds having entered stage III of fasting. This indicates that dehydration is not an underlying factor in decreased haematocrit because if this were the case we would expect an increase with endurance flight. We found no effect of the presence of blood parasites on haematocrit. With the onset of flight, haemodilution may be adaptive, because it reduces blood viscosity and, thereby, energy expenditure by the heart, or it may be a sign of water conservation as an insurance against the risk of dehydration during long non-stop flights. During endurance flight, a reduction in the haematocrit may be adaptive, in that oxygen delivery capacity is adjusted to the decreased oxygen needs as body mass decreases. A decreasing haematocrit would also allow birds to reduce heart beat frequency and/or heart size, because blood viscosity decreases disproportionally with decreasing haematocrit. However, when energy stores are about to come to an end and birds increase protein breakdown, the haematocrit decreases even further, and birds probably become anaemic due to a reduced erythropoiesis. Populations of migratory birds are usually considered to be limited by conditions in breeding or wintering areas, but some might be limited by conditions encountered on migration. This could occur at stopover sites where competition for restricted food supplies can reduce subsequent survival or breeding success, or during the flights themselves, when adverse weather can occasionally kill large numbers of individuals. Competition for food could act in a density-dependent manner and help to regulate populations, whereas weather effects are more likely to act in a density-independent manner. The evidence for these views is explored in this paper. When preparing for migration, birds must normally obtain more food per day than usual, in order to accumulate the body reserves that fuel their flights. Birds often concentrate in large numbers at particular stopover sites, where food can become scarce, thus affecting migratory performance. Rates of weight gain, departure weights, and stopover durations often correlate with food supplies at stopover sites, sometimes influencing the subsequent survival and reproductive success of individuals, which can in turn affect subsequent breeding numbers. Many studies have provided evidence for interference and depletion competition at stopover sites, relatively few for migration conditions influencing the subsequent breeding or survival of individuals, and even fewer for effects on subsequent breeding numbers. Migrants in flight occasionally suffer substantial mortality in storms, especially over water, sometimes involving many thousands of birds at a time. Other mass mortalities have resulted from atypical ‘winter-like’ weather, occurring soon after the arrival of summer migrants in their breeding areas or just before their departure in autumn. Again, many thousands of birds at a time have been killed in such incidents, causing reductions of 30–90% in local breeding densities. In some bird species, migration-related events can at times have substantial effects on the year-to-year changes in breeding population levels. Nonetheless, the difficulties involved in investigating migrating birds at different points on their migration routes have so far limited the number of studies on the influence of events during migration periods on population levels.
