Abstract

An investigation is conducted to find the reactions of aryl aldehydes with styrene derivatives, mediated by various boron Lewis acids. The products are dependent on the boron Lewis acids used and 1,3-dihalo-1,3-diarylpropanes are obtained in high yields with use of boron trihalides, while 3-chloro-1,3-diarylpropanols are obtained with use of phenylboron dichloride.

Abstract

A boron trihalide mediated alkyne-aldehyde coupling reaction has led to stereodefined 1,3,5-triaryl-1,5-dihalo-1,4-pentadienes. The reaction of B[Cl.sub.3] with alkynes has produced monovinylboron dichloride and the reaction temperature and mode of addition have dramatic effects on the stereochemistry of the diene products.
