Abstract

The article focuses on establishing a cross-correlations between different neurons spiking in sparsely firing neural populations like those found in layer 2/3 of sensory cortex through research experiments on rat whisker barrel cortex that showed low levels of spike count correlation in both spontaneous and sensory-evoked states. It concludes that there is a role for inhibition to shape correlations of neural variability.
