Context and results : In this paper, the crystal structure, electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of SrVO3 have been systematically studied by first-principles calculation. The results show that the calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values of X-ray diffraction. The density of states is described in detail in this paper. By analyzing the crystal structure and electronic properties of SrVO3, the magnetic properties of SrVO3 are obtained from the one unpaired electrons of V and the exchange interaction between two V ions. At the same time, a detailed analysis of the optical properties of SrVO3 was conducted, and it was found that it is transparent in the visible light range. Finally, the mechanical properties of SrVO3 are calculated, which can provide some references for future research. Computational method: In this paper, a first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT) is reported for PBE-GGA analysis using the plane wave-pseudo potential method in a quantum concentrate packet, U value of 7 eV to V-d and a U value of 2 eV to O-p, Grimme correction by DFT-D method. The k points in the Brillouin region are set to 4 × 4 × 4. The energy convergence criterion for self-consistent field calculation is set at 5.0 × 10−6 eV/atom, and the cutoff energy is 1170 eV. Context: The electronic properties and optical properties of Cr-doped monolayer WS2 under uniaxial compressive deformation have been investigated based on density functional theory. In terms of electronic structure properties, both intrinsic and doped system bandgaps decrease with the increase of compression deformation, and the values of the bandgap under the same compression deformation after Cr doping are reduced compared with the corresponding intrinsic states. When the compressive deformation reaches 10%, both the intrinsic and doped system band gaps are close to zero. New electronic states and impurity energy levels appear in the WS2 system when doped with Cr atoms. For the optical properties, the calculation and analysis of the dielectric function under each deformation regime of monolayer WS2 show that the compression deformation affects the dielectric function, and when the compression deformation is 10%, the un-doped and Cr-doped regimes show a decrease in ε1(ω) compared to the compression deformation of 8%. For each deformation system, the peak reflections occur in the ultraviolet region. Near the position where the second peak of the absorption spectrum appears, it can be seen that the ability of each system to absorb light gradually decreases with the increase of the amount of deformation and appears to be red-shifted to varying degrees. Methods: This study follows the initial principles of the density functional theory framework and is based on the CASTEP module of Materials-Studio software GGA and PBE generalizations are used to perform computations such as geometry optimization of the model. We have calculated the energy band structure of monolayer WS2 with intrinsic and compressive deformations of 2% and 4% using PBE and HSE06, respectively. The band gap values calculated using PBE are 1.802 eV, 1.663 eV, and 1.353 eV, respectively, and the band gap values calculated with HSE06 are 2.267 eV, 2.034 eV, 1.751 eV. The results show that the bandgap values calculated by HSE06 are significantly higher than those calculated by PBE, but the bandgap variations calculated by the two methods have the same trend, and the shape characteristics of the energy band structure are also the same. However, it is worth noting that the computation time required for the HSE06 calculation is much longer than that of the PBE, which is far beyond the capability of our computer hardware, and the purpose of this paper is to investigate the change rule of the effect of deformation on the bandgap value, so to save the computational resources, the next calculations are all calculated using the PBE. The Monkhorst–Pack special K-point sampling method is used in the calculations. The cutoff energy for the plane wave expansion is 400 eV, and the K-point grid is assumed to be 5 × 5 × 1. Following geometric optimization, the iterative precision converges to a value of less than 0.03 eV/Å for all atomic forces and at least 1 × 10−5 eV/atom for the total energy of each atom. The vacuum layer's thickness was selected at 20 Å to mitigate the impact of the interlayer contact force. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: The monoclinic L-histidine crystal is critical for protein structure and function and is also found in the myelin of brain nerve cells. This study numerically examines its structural, electronic, and optical properties. Our findings indicate that the L-histidine crystal has an insulating band gap of approximately 4.38 eV. Additionally, electron and hole effective masses range between 3.92 m 0 –15.33 m 0 and 4.16 m 0 –7.53 m 0 , respectively. Furthermore, our investigation suggests that the L-histidine crystal is an excellent UV collector due to its strong optical absorption activity for photon energies exceeding 3.5 eV. Methods: To investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of L-histidine crystals, we used the Biovia Materials Studio software to conduct Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations as implemented in the CASTEP code. Our DFT calculations were performed using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) as parameterized by the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange-correlation functional, with an additional dispersion energy correction (PBE + TS) based on the model proposed by Tkatchenko and Scheffler to describe van der Waals interactions. The structural, electronic, optical, and vibrational properties of B3N3H6 have been calculated by means of the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the local density approximation (LDA). The calculated structural parameters of B3N3H6 are in good agreement with experimental data. The obtained band structure of B3N3H6 shows that it has an indirect band gap with 5.007 eV, indicating that it presents insulation characteristic. The total and partial density of states (DOS) of B3N3H6 are given, which tell us the states of the orbital occupation. With the band structure and density of states, we have analyzed the optical properties including the complex dielectric function, refractive index, absorption, conductivity, loss function, and reflectivity. By the contrast, it is found that optical anisotropy is observed in the (001) direction and (100) direction. Moreover, the vibrational properties have been obtained and analyzed, showing that B3N3H6 is dynamically stable due to that there is no imaginary frequency. The frequencies associating with the vibrations are given, which show that B3N3H6 has a low mechanical modulus and thermal conductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of Li-corannulene-(NH) and Li-corannulene-(NO) ( n = 1, 2, 5) compounds have been theoretically designed and investigated using density functional theory. In this work, two models are systematically investigated to explore the important factors for enhancing the static first hyperpolarizability by introducing the substitution group. It is revealed that energy gaps (E) between highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of all compounds are in the range of 4.149-4.934 eV. Different DFT methods are adopted to calculate polarizabilities and the first hyperpolarizabilities of Li-corannulene-(NH) and Li-corannulene-(NO) ( n = 1, 2, 5) compounds. It is revealed that polarizability values of the systems increase with increasing number of NH/NO substitution group. Moreover, it is found that the first hyperpolarizabilities of Li-corannulene-(NO) are larger than those of Li-corannulene-(NH), which can be attributed to the lower transition energies. In contrast to the NH substitution group, NO substitution group can be more powerful in increasing the first hyperpolarizability of Li-doped corannulene. A study of the electronic and optical properties of the hydrogen-terminated GaAs nanocrystals GaAsH and GaAsH is presented. In this study, their dielectric functions, refractive indices, and absorption coefficients were calculated using density functional theory (DFT). The influence of a uniform external electric field on the optical properties of the nanocrystals was also explored. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) for each nanocrystal were studied in the absence and the presence of the uniform external electric field. Our results indicate that the HOMO-LUMO gap decreases with increasing electric field strength. The calculated density of states revealed that the main reason for this shrinking gap is an increase in the delocalization of the gallium π-orbitals under the influence of an increasing external electric field. The permanent dipole moment and the polarizability of the nanocrystals under the induced electric field increased with increasing nanocrystal radius. The induced electric field caused a noticeable redshift in the absorption peaks. The electric field also increased the absorption intensity, particularly when the field strength was >0.25 V/Å. Two important classes of organic molecules, perylene diimide (PDI) and pyrene derivatives have been found to possess relatively excellent photophysical and photochemical properties and especially high two-photon absorption cross sections ( δ). Herein, one-photon absorption (OPA) and two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of some novel PDI and pyrene derivatives were comparatively investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) and Zerner's intermediate neglect of differential overlap (ZINDO) methods. The calculated results indicate that with respect to PDI derivatives, the maximum TPA cross-sections for pyrene compounds increase obviously, the maximum peaks of OPA and TPA spectra are blue-shifted, the Δ E (energy gaps between the highest occupied orbital and the lowest unoccupied orbital) increase. The different π-conjugated bridges (fluorene and pyrene) and terminal groups have slight effect on the OPA properties. Nevertheless, the molecules bearing 1,6-disubstituted pyrene as the π-conjugated bridge display the largest δ in both series of compounds 3 and 4. Moreover, the δ values of molecules with benzothiazole-substituted terminal groups are larger than those of the molecules with diphenylamine, which is attributed to benzothiazole groups stabilizing the planarity of the branch parts, extending the conjugated length and increasing the π-electron delocalized extent. Furthermore, the molecular size has marked effect on OPA and TPA properties. It is worthy to mention that cruciform 8 displays the largest δ among all the studied molecules in the range of 600-1100 nm. This research could provide a better understanding for the origin of the linear and nonlinear optical properties, and it would be helpful to gain more information about designing two-photon absorption materials with large δ. Discovery of novel materials with excellent second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is a very attractive topic in chemistry and materials science. Recently, much more attention has been paid to chiral compounds due to their inherent asymmetric structure and intramolecular charge transfer. Currently, the density functional theory (DFT) has become a powerful methodology to rationalize experimental observations and to design new materials with desirable properties. In this work, on the basis of the reported chiral peropyrene, we designed another five compounds consisting of donor or acceptor moieties and the donor/acceptor combinations. We systematically studied their geometrical/electronic structures and electronic transition/second-order NLO properties. The measured UV–Vis/CD spectra of compound 1 are almost reproduced by our calculations, enabling us to assign its electronic transition property and absolute configuration. For these compounds, the different substituents have great effect on their photophysical properties (i.e., band gap, absorption wavelength, and NLO response). The charge transfer synergy provides some useful information for further performance improvement. Interestingly, compound 6 shows a remarkably large first hyperpolarizability value of 18.14 × 10−30 esu.
