Abstract

The arguments against bioethics offered by Anne Maclean in her book 'The Elimination of Morality' are flawed. Maclean has defined ethics as a matter of maintaining the right attitudes and has equated the entire tradition of bioethics with a small aspect of it, namely consequentialist ethics. However, consequentialist ethics plays but a minor role in contemporary bioethics. Maclean fails to acknowledge the importance of providing reasons to justify moral action. Her claim that the entire enterprise of bioethics is futile cannot be sustained.

Abstract

The Quality Adjusted Life-Year (QALY) scale, and other similar methods that link quality of life to life expectancy, use it for determining specific allocations of health care finances. Although the defenders of QALY claim the equality of all beings, they implicitly attach different values to all lives. QALY also needs a large and comprehensive data collection. Problems related to such large data collections are highlighted.
