We consider an optimal control problem with tracking-type cost functional constrained by the Cattaneo equation, which is a well-known model for delayed heat transfer. In particular, we are interested the asymptotic behaviour of the optimal control problems for a vanishing delay time $\tau \rightarrow 0$. First, we show the convergence of solutions of the Cattaneo equation to the ones of the heat equation. Assuming the same right-hand side and compatible initial conditions for the equations, we prove a linear convergence rate. Moreover, we show linear convergence of the optimal states and optimal controls for the Cattaneo equation towards the ones for the heat equation. We present numerical results for both, the forward and the optimal control problem confirming these linear convergence rates.

We consider a stochastic differential game in the context of forward-backward stochastic differential equations, where one player implements an impulse control while the opponent controls the system continuously. Utilizing the notion of "backward semigroups" we first prove the dynamic programming principle (DPP) for a truncated version of the problem in a straightforward manner. Relying on a uniform convergence argument then enables us to show the DPP for the general setting. In particular, this avoids technical constraints imposed in previous works dealing with the same problem. Moreover, our approach allows us to consider impulse costs that depend on the present value of the state process in addition to unbounded coefficients. Using the dynamic programming principle we deduce that the upper and lower value functions are both solutions (in viscosity sense) to the same Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs obstacle problem. By showing uniqueness of solutions to this partial differential inequality we conclude that the game has a value.

Following a restriction argument in the Euclidean space, we derive a geometric invariant formula for a possible viscosity operator for an incompressible fluid flow on an ellipsoid embedded in $\mathbb R^3$. The Peaceman-Rachford alternating direction implicit (ADI) scheme for linear time-dependent Maxwell equations is analyzed on a heterogeneous cuboid. Due to discontinuities of the material parameters, the solution of the Maxwell equations is less than $H^2$-regular in space. For the ADI scheme, we prove a rigorous time-discrete error bound with a convergence rate that is half an order lower than the classical one. Our statement imposes only assumptions on the initial data and the material parameters, but not on the solution. To establish this result, we analyze the regularity of the Maxwell equations in detail in an appropriate functional analytical framework. The theoretical findings are complemented by a numerical experiment indicating that the proven convergence rate is indeed observable and optimal.

For a smooth bounded domain $\Omega$ and $p \geq q \geq 2$, we establish quantified versions of the classical Friedrichs inequality $\|\nabla u\|_p^p - \lambda_1 \|u\|_q^p \geq 0$, $u \in W_0^{1,p}(\Omega)$, where $\lambda_1$ is a generalized least frequency. We apply one of the obtained quantifications to show that the resonant equation $-\Delta_p u = \lambda_1 \|u\|_q^{p-q} |u|^{q-2} u + f$ coupled with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions possesses a weak solution provided $f$ is orthogonal to the minimizer of $\lambda_1$., Comment: 25 pages
