Improving the mechanical polishing of engineering surfaces in terms of the wetting and droplet evaporation theories is important for increasing the efficiency of modern equipment. Depending on the function of engineering surfaces, the mechanical polishing allows changing the wetting, as well as the liquid droplet evaporation rates and modes. However, the prediction of the processes occurring at the liquid/gas/solid contact line becomes more complicated after modification of metal surfaces, as well as under changing the environmental conditions. This work focuses on the study of wetting and evaporation of liquid droplets from polished aluminum alloy surfaces at constant and cyclically varying pressure. Wetting and droplet evaporation are key processes in equipment of the thermal power industry, in particular, operating at constant and cyclically varying high pressure: water-water steam generators, water vapor separators, droplet catchers, etc. Therefore, we investigated droplet wetting and evaporation modes after mechanical processes of surfaces, including polishing by tumbling, satin finishing, grinding and polishing by disks and pastes. We determined the condition when polishing of aluminum alloy surfaces by these methods does not affect the wettability by liquid droplets. Moreover, we established the effect of constant and cyclically varying high pressure on the droplet evaporation rate and evaporation modes. The pressure was found not to affect the characteristics of water droplet evaporation under conditions of periodically varied pressure in the chamber from the atmospheric (0.1 MPa) to high (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 MPa) values. Nanomembrane is an independent structure with a thickness of 1–100 nm and with much large lateral dimensions. Due to the unique properties of nanomembranes, research on the category of structures is valuable. Furthermore, nanomembranes have received a lot of attention from scientists because those types of structures can be used in various bioengineering branches. However, biocompatibility and toxicity of nanomembranes are not fully understood yet. In terms of mechanical engineering, nanomembranes must have mechanical strength, surface treatment to ensure the required structure. Mechanical properties can be affected through the material, fabrication method, porosity. For the application of nanomembranes in bioengineering, it is important to develop research to improve the biocompatibility and mechanical strength of nanomembranes. In this paper, according to the recent achievements, classification of materials, fabrication methods, and porosity are reviewed and summarized. Applications of nanomaterials in tissue engineering (bone and skin) as well as in drug delivery systems are also presented. The aim of the paper is to highlight the role of synthetic nanomembranes in the context of nanotechnologies and provide applications of functionalized nanomembranes in bioengineering. Knowledge of the fracture and fatigue behaviour of metallic alloys at extreme environmental temperature conditions is required to assess the safety of structural components operating in particular fields: aero-spatial, off-shore structures, power plants superconductors, polar Antarctic facilities, etc. Among the structural metallic alloys for civil, mechanical engineering and plant applications, steel S275 J2 is widely used, whereas aluminium alloys such as Al7075 T6 are significant especially for aero-spatial and polar Antarctic applications. In this paper, the main experimental mechanical characteristics of such metallic materials at room temperature as well as at low temperatures are examined. Three temperatures are considered: 293 K (+20 °C, room temperature RT), 243 K (−30 °C) and 193 K (−80 °C). The corresponding values of fracture toughness and endurance limit available in the literature are reported herein. Further, experimental tests have been performed to determine the unavailable mechanical properties. Then, the values of such fracture and fatigue parameters at various temperatures are critically discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An optimised structure is one which uses the smallest quantity of the best material to perform its function, with adequate safety factor or margin for error. Structural optimisation occurs not only in mechanical engineering, but also in nature: plants with hollow stems or stalks gain a height advantage, and are thus more efficient, by approaching the optimum shape. Here we consider the optimisation of orthotropic tubes, typifying, in a mechanical sense, stalk and stem. The stiffness and strength of orthotropic tubes of initially circular section are reviewed, and diagrams are proposed which allow the optimum section shape to be selected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The room temperature high cycle fatigue behaviour of stir cast AA 6061-SiCp composites, with varying reinforcement percentage, is studied. The specimens were tested under fully reversed cyclic deformation in the peak aged condition. Composite with 20% reinforcement exhibit superior fatigue strength over other composites (with 10,15 and 25% reinforcement). The experimental results are correlated with scanning electron micrographs of the failed specimens. Two distinct morphologies namely, crack initiation/ propagation and fast fracture region, were present. Mode-I type cracking was found to have dominated the crack initiation. The final fracture mode was found to be ductile with nucleation, growth and coalescence of cracks in the matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A number of studies have indicated that imperfections in cellular solids can have a very large influence on their mechanical behavior. Waviness in cell walls can drastically reduce elastic stiffnesses, and various irregularities can reduce the effective strengths by large factors. These imperfections have in many instances been studied in isolation, i.e., only a singe type of imperfection was studied at a time. The goal of the present paper is to shed light on how different kinds of imperfections interact. There is a potential risk that when multiple kinds of imperfections are present, the mechanical properties of the cellular solid are worse than what would be predicted from each one in isolation. The present study is focused on linear elastic properties, although many of the conclusions apply also for other properties. The method employed is based on statistical averages and Taylor expansion arguments. Such techniques have in previous papers been applied to a single imperfection type. The conclusion from the present analysis is that, up to the third order in “small” parameters describing the severity of the imperfections, there is no interaction between a number of different types of imperfections.
