In this paper, the crystal structure, microstructure, thermoelectric properties and figure of merit (zT) of highly pure higher manganese silicide (HMS) alloys are reported and discussed without the bias generally introduced by impurities in published results. The alloys were produced by both solid-state reaction diffusion assisted by spark plasma sintering and conventional arc melting in order to evaluate the effect of the process on the microstructure and on the resulting properties of HMS. The effect of Ge addition is also explored. Properties diagram for thermoelectric materials is displayed to assess the performance of un-doped and Ge-doped HMS alloys in comparison with the state of the art. Electrical conductivity and zT at 500 °C of the HMS alloys studied here exceed published properties achieved with similar alloys, providing new process options for reliable, affordable and efficient thermoelectric applications. Emerging lower cost titanium metal powder produced via an electrolytic method has been fully consolidated using spark plasma sintering (SPS) generating microstructures comparable to those observed in Ti-6Al-4V PM product. This is the first time powder from an alternative titanium extraction method has been processed via SPS and it is benchmarked with commercial alloys (CP-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr). The effect of powder feedstock size, morphology, and alloy chemistry on the consolidated density and microstructure is presented. Through a design of experiments (DoE) type approach the effect of SPS processing conditions on these alloy powders, including maximum sintering temperature, pressure, heating rate, and dwell time were investigated. The SPS process is found to be largely insensitive to feedstock size and morphology, although very large or highly porous powder particles are more difficult to fully consolidate. The maximum sintering temperature and pressure have the largest contribution to achieving full consolidation, with higher pressures and temperatures increasing the final density. Increasing heating rate increases the final grain size, despite less time being spent at the higher temperature and it is thought this is due to bypassing the traditional first phase of sintering. This paper shows that SPS is a viable step for a low-cost manufacturing route, for example to produce preform billets to be finished with a one-step forging operation, especially when combined with the possibility of lower cost powder. In the long-term, SPS will allow a significant reduction in the processing cost, contributing to an increased usage of titanium powder feedstock for a range of applications. This is reinforced by the successful large scale production of a 5 kg SPS Ti-6-4 billet, demonstrating the potential industrial scalability of the process, particularly for the aerospace industry. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of Sr- and Mn-doped ions on the sintering behaviors, microstructure and mechanical properties of the bioceramics processed by single- and two-step microwave sintering (MWSSS and MWTSS). Nano-sized calcium hydroxyapatite powders doped with Sr and Mn ions, obtained by modified precipitation synthesis, were isostatically pressed at 400 MPa and processed by MWSSS and MWTSS at different temperatures. In all cases during the sintering, the doped HAP powders turned into biphasic mixtures of HAP and TCP, but the amount of TCP was certainly lower in the case of MWTSS. It was shown that the doped ions significantly affected: density, microstructure, grain size, porosity, hardness, and fracture toughness of the processed bioceramics. Two-step microwave sintering was successfully applied for the processing of HAP/TCP bioceramics doped with strontium and manganese ions. Both two-step microwave sintered doped bioceramics had similar and high hardness values, but the strontium-substituted bioceramic material certainly had higher fracture toughness (1.54 MPam), with an average grain size of 195 nm. Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that the two-step microwave sintered strontium-doped bioceramics could be suitable materials in the bone regenerative field. The aim of this paper is to establish the correlation among sintering process, porosity, and important thermo-mechanical property of refractory concrete, i.e., creep. Creep deformation was investigated according to the standard laboratory procedure applied at three temperatures: 1200, 1300, and 1400 °C. Corundum and bauxite-based refractory concretes were investigated. The concretes are varying in chemical and mineralogical composition. Both loss of strength and degradation of material occur when refractory concrete is subjected to increased temperature and compressive static load. Measuring of thermo-mechanical properties can indicate and monitor the changes within microstructure. Variation of refractory concrete microstructure, as a consequence of sintering process, during exposure to constant compressive load and constant elevated temperature during certain time-intervals was investigated using scanning electron microscope and Image Pro Plus program for image analysis. This paper deals with the effects of preparation methods on the texture development and densification in textured SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBT) ceramics. The specimens were prepared by the oriented consolidation of anisotropic particles (OCAP), templated grain growth (TGG) and reactive templated grain growth (RTGG) methods. The specimens with extensive texture were obtained by all methods except for TGG with small template and large matrix particles. The origin of extensive texture development was the growth of aligned platelike particles. A characteristic of microstructure was the formation of colonies, in which platelike grains contacted face-to-face. The size of colonies was dependent on the preparation method, and determined the size of pores between colonies, which had a large effect on the sintered density. The OCAP and RTGG methods gave the green compacts composed of only platelike particles and large colonies and pores formed during sintering. The TGG method gave the green compacts composed of platelike and equiaxed particles and prevented the formation of large colonies and pores during sintering. Thus, the dense, highly-textured SBT ceramics were obtained by the TGG method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review paper is focussed on the characterization of the microstructural development during liquid phase sintering and post-densification crystallisation heat treatment of ceramic materials based on the Si3N4 or SiC structures. Grain shape and size distributions, assessed by quantitative microscopy in combination with stereological methods, and fine scale microstructures, investigated by electron diffraction and high resolution imaging and microanalysis in the TEM, are discussed and related to the fabrication process and the overall composition of the ceramic material. It is demonstrated that combined high resolution analytical and spatial information from chemically and structurally distinct fine scale features, such as grain boundary films of residual glass, is obtained by electron spectroscopic imaging and subsequent computation of elemental distribution images. These images reveal that residual glassy grain boundary films are rich in oxygen and cations originating from the metal oxide/nitride additives, consistent with fine probe EDX analysis in the FEGTEM. Elemental analysis with high spatial resolution has also shown that grain growth into pockets of residual liquid/glass is associated with diffusion profiles in the glass in front of the growing grain. High resolution imaging in the TEM and elemental maps computed from electron energy filtered images show that the intergranular film thickness, in general, varies within a particular silicon nitride or sialon microstructure. Furthermore, grain boundaries, apparently free from residual glass may co-exist with glass-containing grain boundaries in some silicon nitride microstructures. In addition to the choice and weight fraction of sintering additives, factors such as the ionic radius of the cations originating from the additives, the local nano-scale chemistry and the relative grain orientation have an effect on the volume fraction and morphology of the intergranular microstructure.
