Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys can be fabricated by a series of thermo-mechanical processing methods (e.g., hot rolling, forging and extrusion), which is able to serve in aeronautic, automobile, and marine industries because of its excellent physical properties. However, reaching the balance between high strength and favorable ductility to present its high performance is still in progress, during which temperature and strain rate are two very important external variables. More importantly, the core lies in sophisticated microstructure evolution paths involved in hot deformation, which consists of different microstructure mechanisms and behaviors and can be expressed as various mechanical responses. Therefore, a fundamental review of microstructure mechanisms and behaviors, microstructure evolution and relevant mechanical responses of Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys during high-temperature deformation is of great significance. In present paper, first, various experimental methods have been introduced. Second, general trends of mechanical properties changing with temperature and strain rate have been summarized. Third, major microstructure mechanisms and behaviors have been discussed. Then, a schematic illustration originating from dislocations' movement has been depicted, which succeeding microstructure evolution and mechanical responses (including superplasticity) have been reviewed accordingly. Oxide Dispersed Strengthened (ODS) ferritic stainless steels present well-known fine grains microstructures where dislocation movement is hindered by a dense precipitation of nano-oxides particles. Previous research, on the thermomechanical behavior at high temperature and strain rates, was focused on torsion tests (Karch in J Nucl Mater 459:53-61, 2014). Considering texture evolution and grain shape as indicators of the intragranular dislocation glide activity, it was shown that, for high temperature and strain rate, intragranular deformation was in competition with intergranular accommodation. The latter phenomenon was related to early damaging at grain boundaries. The occurrence of a transition phenomenon from an intragranular to an intergranular deformation mechanism, with increasing temperature, was recently confirmed by neutron diffraction spectroscopy (Stoica in Nature Commun 5:5178, 2014). In the present paper, hot extrusion (HE) tests are performed, avoiding damage due to the high stress triaxiality, and allowing further investigation of intragranular and intergranular plasticity at large strains. Three ferritic steels exhibiting various precipitation size and density were hot extruded. Microstructure evolution at different stages of deformation is investigated using the Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) technique. After extrusion at 1373 K (1100 °C), the microstructure of ODS steels consists of a mixture of small round shape grains and larger elongated grains containing low-angle grain boundaries. Texture measurements show the appearance of the α-fiber (<110>//extrusion direction) and an increase in its intensity during the extrusion process in the larger grains. The fragmentation of the large elongated grains by Continuous Dynamic Recrystallization (CDRX) partially occurs in ODS materials depending on precipitation reinforcement. For smaller grains, plastic deformation has no effect on crystallographic orientation and grain shape, indicating a grain boundary accommodation phenomenon as the major deformation mechanism. In this paper, rapid solidified MgZnY (at.%) alloy powders produced by an inert gas atomizer were consolidated using a severe plastic deformation technique of high pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature and 373 K. The behavior of powder consolidation, matrix microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties of the powders and compacts were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, microhardness, and tensile testing. As the HPT processing temperature increases, the powders are more plastically deformed due to decreased deformation resistance, grain boundaries are more in equilibrium, powder bonding is enhanced due to increased interparticle diffusion, hence, tensile ductility and strength increases. Magnesium alloy (AZ31) based metal matrix composite reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was fabricated using the technique of disintegrated melt deposition followed by hot extrusion. In this research paper, the microstructure, hardness, tensile properties, tensile fracture, high cycle fatigue characteristics, and final fracture behavior of CNTs-reinforced magnesium alloy composite (denoted as AZ31/1.0 vol.% CNT or AZ31/CNT) is presented, discussed, and compared with the unreinforced counterpart (AZ31). The elastic modulus, yield strength, tensile strength of the reinforced magnesium alloy was noticeably higher compared to the unreinforced counterpart. The ductility, quantified both by elongation-to-failure and reduction in cross-section area of the composite was higher than the monolithic counterpart. A comparison of the CNT-reinforced magnesium alloy with the unreinforced counterpart revealed a noticeable improvement in cyclic fatigue life at the load ratios tested. At all values of maximum stress, both the reinforced and unreinforced magnesium alloy was found to degrade the cyclic fatigue life at a lower ratio, i.e., under conditions of fully reversed loading. The viable mechanisms responsible for the enhanced cyclic fatigue life and tensile behavior of the composite are rationalized in light of macroscopic fracture mode and intrinsic microscopic mechanisms governing fracture. This paper presents a study of microscale plastic deformation at the crack tip and the effect of microstructure feature on the local deformation of aluminum specimen during fracture test. Three-point bending test of aluminum specimen was conducted inside a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging system. The crack tip deformation was measured in situ utilizing SEM imaging capabilities and the digital image correlation (DIC) full-field deformation measurement technique. The microstructure feature at the crack tip was examined to understand its effect on the local deformation fields. Microscale pattern that was suitable for the DIC technique was generated on the specimen surface using sputter coating through a copper mesh before the fracture test. A series of SEM images of the specimen surface were acquired using in situ backscattered electronic imaging (BEI) mode during the test. The DIC technique was then applied to these SEM images to calculate the full-field deformation around the crack tip. The grain orientation map at the same location was obtained from electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), which was superimposed on a DIC strain map to study the relationship between the microstructure feature and the evolution of plastic deformation at the crack tip. This approach enables to track the initiation and evolution of plastic deformation in grains adjacent to the crack tip. Furthermore, bifurcation of the crack due to intragranular and intergranular crack growth was observed. There was also localization of strain along a grain boundary ahead of and parallel to the crack after the maximum load was reached, which was a characteristic of Dugdale-Barenblatt strip-yield zone. Thus, it appears that there is a mixture of effects in the fracture process zone at the crack tip where the weaker aspects of the grain boundary controls the growth of the crack and the more ductile aspects of the grains themselves dissipate the energy and the corresponding strain level available for these processes through plastic work. The aim of this paper is to establish the correlation among sintering process, porosity, and important thermo-mechanical property of refractory concrete, i.e., creep. Creep deformation was investigated according to the standard laboratory procedure applied at three temperatures: 1200, 1300, and 1400 °C. Corundum and bauxite-based refractory concretes were investigated. The concretes are varying in chemical and mineralogical composition. Both loss of strength and degradation of material occur when refractory concrete is subjected to increased temperature and compressive static load. Measuring of thermo-mechanical properties can indicate and monitor the changes within microstructure. Variation of refractory concrete microstructure, as a consequence of sintering process, during exposure to constant compressive load and constant elevated temperature during certain time-intervals was investigated using scanning electron microscope and Image Pro Plus program for image analysis. This paper discusses the laser-irradiated microjoints between glass and polyimide for applications in neural implants. To facilitate bonding between them, a thin titanium film with a thickness of approximately 0.2 μm was deposited on glass wafers using the physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. Two sets of samples were fabricated where the bonds were created using diode and fiber lasers. The samples were subjected to tension using a microtester for bond strength measurements. The failure strengths of the bonds generated using fiber laser are quite consistent, while a wide variation of failure strengths are observed for the bonds generated with diode laser. Few untested samples were sectioned and the microstructures near the bond areas were studied using an optical microscope. The images revealed the presence of a sharp crack in the glass substrate near the bond generated with the diode laser. However, no such crack was observed in the samples made using fiber laser. To investigate the reasons behind such discrepancy in bond quality further, uncoupled three-dimensional finite element analyses (FEA) were conducted only for the samples created using diode laser. First, the transient heat diffusion-based FEA was conducted by using the laser power intensity distribution as a time dependent heat source. This model calculates the temperature distribution within the substrates as a function of time. Next, the structural model predicts the amount of residual stresses developed in the joint system as it is cooled down to room temperature. Auxetic materials are those which exhibit negative Poisson’s ratio, i.e. these solids expand transversely when stretched longitudinally. In recent years the concept of semi-auxetics has been examined for cellular solids based on combination of re-entrant and hexagonal microstructures. In this paper we identify a type of rotating unit that gives positive Poisson’s ratio so that a study can be made on rotating sub-structures that exhibit both positive and negative Poisson’s ratio characteristics. A second type of rotating geometry, whose Poisson’s ratio shifts from negative to positive as stretching increases, has also been identified. Based on kinematical studies we explore the relationship between the on-axis Poisson’s ratios in terms of novel lattice geometry and the magnitude of deformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A high fidelity assessment of accumulative damage of woven fabric composite structures subjected to aggressive loadings is strongly reliant on the accurate characterization of the inherent multi-scale microstructures and the underlying deformation phenomena. Damage in composite sandwich and joint structures is characterized by the coexistence of discrete (delamination) and continuum damage (matrix cracking and intralaminar damage). A purely fracture mechanics-based or a purely continuum damage mechanics-based tool alone cannot effectively characterize the interaction between the discrete and continuum damage and their compounding effect that leads to the final rupture. In this paper, a hybrid discrete and continuum damage model is developed and numerically implemented within the LS-DYNA environment via a user-defined material model. The continuum damage progression and its associated stiffness degradation are predicted based on the constituent stress/strain and their associated failure criteria while the discrete delamination damage is captured via a cohesive interface model. A multi-scale computational framework is established to bridge the response and failure predictions at constituent, ply, and laminated composite level. The calculated constituent stress and strain are used in a mechanism-driven failure criterion to predict the failure mode, failure sequence, and the synergistic interaction that leads to global stiffness degradation and the final rupture. The use of the cohesive interface model can capture the complicated delamination zone without posing the self-similar crack growth condition. The unified depiction of the continuum and discrete damage via the damage mechanics theory provides a rational way to study the coupling effects between the in-plane and the out-of-plane failure modes. The applicability and accuracy of the damage models used in the hybrid dynamic failure prediction tool are demonstrated via its application to a circular plate and a composite hat stiffener subjected to shock and low velocity impact loading. This paper presents research work on the characteristics and micro mechanism of strain whitening of a thermoplastic olefin material. Systematic tensile tests have been carried out to investigate the relation between strain whitening extent and external factors, including the deformation employed and the environmental temperature. A new optical method has been developed for the measurement of strain on polymer tensile samples. Applying this method relation between whitening level (grey level change) and strain has been studied. A new concept of ‘strain whitening sensitivity’ has been proposed and defined as the strain whitening induced by unit deformation or strain. Non-monotonic relation between whitening level and strain has been found. Strained and fractured samples were observed with A JEOL 5800 LV SEM for the micro mechanism investigation. The change of microstructure on the sample surface has been extensively observed and the combined effects of small ridges and micro-voids on the scattering efficiency of the strained surface were regarded as reasons for the non-monotonic relation between whitening level and strain. This paper provides evidences on the feasibility of using an in-situ deformation process to produce elongated structures of a polyaniline complex (PANI CX), embedded in the bulk of filament-like polymer composites, and longitudinally oriented along the composites' main axial direction. The polyaniline complex was thermally blended with polystyrene- polybutadiene-polystyrene (SBS) at different weight compositions, and the resultant blends were capillary extruded into filaments. The extrudates' microstructure was analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of the analysis revealed a phase- separated morphology in the extrudates, which consisted of elongated domains of PANI CX embedded in the bulk of the SBS. The elongated structures displayed a considerable degree of uniformity and continuity, and were preferentially oriented in the extrusion direction. The formation of these structures was ascribed to a combination of factors, the main ones including elongational and shearing flows occurring in the molten/softened blends during the processing, and the stresses transferred from the highly viscous matrix to the particles of the PANI complex filler.
