In this paper, the effect of deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) on the microstructure and properties of automotive 6063 aluminum alloy at different times was investigated with automotive 6063 aluminum alloy as the research object. The results show that under the conditions of deep cryogenic treatment, the lattice distortion occurs in the alloy matrix microstructure, and the resulting internal stress promotes the large proliferation of dislocations within the alloy and the increase of dislocation density; meanwhile, after the deep cryogenic treatment, the deformed grains are transformed into recrystallized and sub-crystals structural grains, the grains are refined, and the size of the grains is refined from the original 25.2 μm to 20.3 μm, with fine equiaxed crystals. Among them, the mechanical properties of the DCT36h specimen were the best, and its hardness, tensile strength, yield strength and elongation reached 142.44 HV, 328.32 MPa, 177.42 MPa, and 29.29%, which were 34.17%, 5.62%, 11.10%, and 32.77% higher than the original sample, respectively. We believe that the main mechanism for the increase in toughness is multiple reinforcement such as dislocation strengthening, grain refinement strengthening, precipitated phase strengthening and texture strengthening. In this paper, perfect interface model of Al/AlCu alloy and defect interface model of Al/AlCu alloy after cracks were introduced at different positions of the interface were established by using cohesive zone modeling method. Classical molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of Al/AlCu alloy interface model at a strain rate of 0.05 Å/ps and the temperature of 300 K. The simulation results show that perfect interface exhibits a uniform plastic deformation stage due to structural relaxation after yielding, while there is no structural relaxation during the deformation of defect interface and the tensile strength is much lower than that of perfect interface as well. In the process of deformation, stacking faults formed in perfect interface and cracks are generated and expanded in Al matrix, while there was no stacking faults forming along with the expansion and cracking at the position of introduced cracks in defect interface. Massive dislocation nucleation leads to the reduction in stress at the perfect and defect interfaces after yielding. The extension of Shockley partial dislocation and the nucleation of Stair-rod dislocation are the main mechanisms of interface deformation. Densities of Shockley partial dislocation and Stair-rod dislocation decrease with increasing strain before crack propagation. TiAl alloy becomes a promising high-temperature structural material due to excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperature. However, the inherent brittleness makes it difficult to be processed by traditional technologies. Therefore, an innovative twin-wire plasma arc additive manufacturing (TW-PAAM) process is developed to fabricate TiAl alloy. Substrate heating is indispensable during additively manufactured TiAl alloy, which can alleviate its crack tendency. In this paper, crack-free TiAl alloy samples are fabricated using TW-PAAM, and the effect of substrate temperature (560, 620 and 680 °C) on as-deposited TiAl alloy is investigated in detail. With the increase in substrate temperature, microstructural lamellar spacing and colony size exhibit the tendency of increase. Also, α2 phase content, recrystallization degree and high Schmid factor frequency present the decrease tendency. These variations of microstructure characteristics further lead to the decrease in both microhardness and tensile properties of the deposit. Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys can be fabricated by a series of thermo-mechanical processing methods (e.g., hot rolling, forging and extrusion), which is able to serve in aeronautic, automobile, and marine industries because of its excellent physical properties. However, reaching the balance between high strength and favorable ductility to present its high performance is still in progress, during which temperature and strain rate are two very important external variables. More importantly, the core lies in sophisticated microstructure evolution paths involved in hot deformation, which consists of different microstructure mechanisms and behaviors and can be expressed as various mechanical responses. Therefore, a fundamental review of microstructure mechanisms and behaviors, microstructure evolution and relevant mechanical responses of Al–Zn–Mg–Cu alloys during high-temperature deformation is of great significance. In present paper, first, various experimental methods have been introduced. Second, general trends of mechanical properties changing with temperature and strain rate have been summarized. Third, major microstructure mechanisms and behaviors have been discussed. Then, a schematic illustration originating from dislocations' movement has been depicted, which succeeding microstructure evolution and mechanical responses (including superplasticity) have been reviewed accordingly. This paper aims to unveil effects of α colony and α plate parameters on tensile properties and impact toughness of Ti-55531 alloy with multilevel lamellar microstructures. Microstructures with different α colony and α plate sizes were prepared using varied heat treatments and analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction, transmission electron microscopy. Relationships of microstructure and strength, plasticity and impact toughness were discussed. Results indicate that tensile strength increases, while plasticity and impact toughness of the alloy decline with decreasing effective sizes (width/length ratio) of α colony (dc) and α plate (dα) and increasing of volume fraction of α phase. Both dc and dα follow the Hall–Petch principle with strength, and dc was determined to be the critical controlling parameter of strength owing to higher interfacial strengthening effect induced by α colony. However, plasticity is primarily related to dα. Moreover, impact toughness for both dc and dα follows the linear relation, but the coefficient of dα is higher. Furthermore, impact toughness is more dependent on plasticity than strength. Larger α plates lead to more mechanical twins during impacting and result in higher plasticity and impact toughness. Therefore, the impact toughness should depend more on the size of α plates. In order to unveil the influence of α plate size on impact deformation and microcrack initiation behavior of Ti-55531 alloy, the microstructural deformation and crack nucleation characteristics in the impact crack nucleation region were detected by TEM in detail; then, the schematic illustration for microstructural deformation and crack nucleation characteristics was made according to experiment results. The stability of Al foams during processing is crucial to producing uniform Al foams. Once pores form during processing, no matter which conventional methods are used, the pores grow and/or merge into large ones, which could cause Al foams to “collapse”. Therefore, it has attracted great attention of researchers to enhance the stability of Al foams during processing for improved quality of Al foams. A novel approach to produce Al-alloy foams, “Rheofoaming”, is presented in this paper. A twin-screw rheomixer fitted with a gas inlet near the end cap is used in this work. The mechanism of this approach is firstly to increase the viscosity of semisolid slurry of Al alloy by adding sub-micron Al2O3 particles and then to mix N2 gas with the semisolid slurry using a twin-screw rheomixer, which can offer high shear rate and intensive turbulence. The gas pores in the semisolid slurry are stretched and broken into smaller ones in the rheomixer. Al foams are very stable during the processing due to small pore sizes and high viscosity of semisolid slurry. The microstructures, machinability and surface characteristics of Al–7Si and Al–7Si–2.5Cu cast alloys were studied after various melt treatments like grain refinement and modification. Results indicate that combined grain refined and modified Al–7Si–2.5Cu cast alloys have microstructures consisting of uniformly distributed α-Al grains, eutectic Al–silicon and fine CuAl2 particles in the interdendritic region. These alloys exhibited better machinability and surface characteristics in the cast condition compared with the same alloy subjected to only grain refinement or modification. Performances of the turning inserts (Un-coated, PVD and Polished CVD diamond coated) were evaluated in machining Al–7Si and Al–7Si–2.5Cu cast alloys under dry environment using a lathe. The Polished CVD diamond coated insert outperformed the Un-coated or PVD-coated cutting inserts which suffered from sizeable edge buildup leading to higher cutting force and poor surface finish. The Polished CVD diamond coated insert shows a very small steady wear without flaking of the diamond film during cutting. This paper attempts to investigate the influence of grain refinement, modification and combined action of both on the microstrutural changes in the Al–7Si and Al–7Si–2.5Cu cast alloys and their machinability and surface finish when different turning inserts used. The processing, structure and properties of deformed metals and alloys with a structural scale from the micrometer to the nanometer dimensions has been the subject of a recent viewpoint set []. The present paper will focus on deformed metals and alloys with a structural scale from 5 nm to 100 nm, concentrating on materials processed by high pressure torsion (HPT), surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) and sliding. A detailed microstructural characterization has been followed by an analysis of the relationship between structural features and processing parameters. In this analysis, some general approaches have been applied for example scaling of the evolution of the boundary spacing. A new semisolid metal processing technology, rheo-diecasting (RDC) has been developed for production of Mg-alloy components with high integrity. The RDC process innovatively combines the dispersive mixing power of the twin-screw mechanism for creation of high quality semisolid slurry and the high efficiency, low cost nature of the high pressure die casting (HPDC) process for component shaping. AZ91D Mg-alloy was used to optimise the RDC process and to establish its advantages over both the HPDC process and other existing semisolid processing techniques. In this paper we present the RDC process for processing Mg-alloys and the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties of RDC AZ91D alloy. The solidification behaviour of the Mg-alloys in the RDC process and the co-relationships between microstructure and mechanical properties of the RDC AZ91D alloy are discussed. It was found that the RDC process is capable of producing Mg-alloy samples with close-to-zero porosity and a fine, uniform microstructure throughout the entire sample irrespective of the section thickness. Compared with those obtained by other existing processing techniques, the RDC samples have substantially improved or equivalent mechanical properties, with the tensile elongation showing more than 100% improvement. Tin-rich organ pipes are often affected by localised deterioration in the form of grey pustules, pinholes, cracks and exfoliations at the surface. Two main types of decay of tin-base materials that might have a similar appearance, i.e. the surface of the object covered with dark grey pustules, are known. The first is the allotropic transformation of white metallic tin into grey tin, the so-called “tin-pest”. The second form of decay is due to corrosion in the form of localised oxidation of tin. The identification of the causes of deterioration is of main concern because, whereas oxidised material can be treated, an object that suffers “tin pest” cannot be reconstituted. In the present paper the results of investigations on ancient tin-rich organ pipes affected by localised degradation are presented. The study of the composition and the microstructure of the pipes has been coupled with the results of analyses on the corrosion products. It was shown that oxidation clearly has a significant role in the deterioration of tin pipes, but it was not possible to establish if the allotropic transformation took place or not, because of the low probability of detecting the residual grey tin. The thermal stability of two-phase (α + γ) lamellar microstructure in Ti-Al-Mo PST (polysynthetically twinned that has single colony) crystals, containing C or Si, was investigated. In addition, the variation of α-phase volume fraction in Ti-Al-Mo-(C,Si) systems was investigated at several temperatures. Ti-46Al-1.5Mo-0.2C and Ti-46Al-1.5Mo-1.0Si alloys did not recrystallized (‘stable’ in this paper) during heat treatments at various heating rates and temperatures. Moreover, the α-phase volume fractions of Ti-46Al-1.5Mo-0.2C and Ti-46Al-1.5Mo-1.0Si alloys which were stable compositions, changed less than those of Ti-47Al and Ti-46Al-1.5Mo alloys which were unstable compositions. The instability of the latter alloys was caused by their relatively higher variation of α-phase volume fraction during heating. Therefore, it is suggested that the variation of α-phase volume fraction is an important factor in controlling the thermal stability of lamellar microstructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
