Nikkei Telecom, providing business information via the Internet, released new search interface "navigation type article search" that introduced a new technology called automatic article classification process. Compared to full-text search, the new search significantly improves the relevance ratio of the search results, and makes the user to narrow down the search results while reflecting their intentions. The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) owns several term dictionaries. Among them are the "JST technological term thesaurus" for use in indexing controlled vocabularies and the "Large-scale scientific and technological dictionary", which contains synonyms and spelling variants. This article reviews the "JST thesaurus map" we developed to visualize dictionary data based on terms' relationship for finding the most effective search word. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the data compression technique for information retrieval from huge sets of texts and the pattern for extraction of information in the ordinal keyword search.

Ecology Express is an ASP (Application Service Provider) service, focused on delivering environment and energy related information. The year 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of the service. Majority of the customers are corporations, with its membership comprised approximately 400 companies and 2,000 individuals. Since the establishment of the service, various improvements have been made, such as completeness and immediacy of information and usability, by trial and error. As part of these efforts, the site was renewed dramatically for the third time in September 2008. In February 2009, the Yomiuri Shimbun launched "YOMIDAS REKISHIKAN (YOMIDASU history museum)", a database enabling users to search and browse the newspaper articles published over 135 years since its inauguration. The database is equipped with a search support system "YOMIDAS YOGO JISHO (YOMIDAS glossary)". This article reports on the structure of the glossary and article indexing using the glossary, improvement in search accuracy with the indexed keywords. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study we analyzed the efficacy of index terms of JSTPlus and JMEDPlus databases. Those databases are produced and provided by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Statistical analysis of user behavior showed that not many users were aware of indexes but got the benefit of indexes and thesaurus. From 52 theme searches, analysis of recall ratio and precision ratio showed that indexes raised retrieval precision. And by using indexes, users could retrieve the articles those were not able to be retrieved only from bibliographic data search. Appearance ratio of index terms in titles, abstracts and full texts showed that 40% of index terms and their synonyms didn't appear in full text. It showed that 40% of index terms were indexed by indexer's subject analysis of full text. These analyses meant efficacy of indexing by hands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Ichu-Shi Web" is the database that contains bibliographic citations and abstracts from more than 2,500 biomedical journals and other serial publications published in Japan. It was started in 2000. The number of citations is more than 300,000 per year and now exceeds 6.5 million. Trained indexers attach descriptors (controlled keywords) that are relevant to the subject contents of each article, based on the "Thesaurus for Medical and Health-Related Terms (lchu-Shi Thesaurus)". We have edited and published the thesaurus as a tool for indexing and searching since 1983. The 6th edition based on the US National Library of Medicines Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) 2005 has been published in January 2007. It contains 25,317 descriptors and more than 300,000 synonyms that are connected with each other (mapping) in the thesaurus management system. Using the system, indexers can easily find descriptors suitable to the article. Furthermore "Ichu-Shi Web" automatically performs descriptors search using a mapping feature, without referencing the thesaurus in advance. Here we described the current indexing rules of the Ichu-Shi Thesaurus and the indexing support function, a part of the total Ichu-Shi database processing system, which has been newly developed. The controlled index term given to the scientific and technological reference databases such as JSTPIus and JMEDPIus is performed based on the JST Scientific and Technological Thesaurus. The main point of the revision after an interval of nine years for this 2008 edition thesaurus is explained . As a special feature of this revision, linkage between Large-scale Scientific and Technological Dictionary and JST Thesaurus 2008 Edition is mentioned. In order to search this dictionary that collected a synonym and different notation words, JST Thesaurus Browser is used. By this linkage, since a far large number of synonyms can be referred to compared with the thesaurus independent number of synonyms, the approach to a controlled term becomes easy and increase in efficiency can be attained also in index work and retrieval. In the field of information retrieval, the improvement of recall and precision has been a problem since the dawn of information retrieval, and the experience of information professionals has been relied upon until recent times. JDreamII, which was released in April of 2006 has various search support functions. And in this article, the functions which particularly support recall improvement are introduced. Life Science Dictionary (LSD) is a versatile database of life science terms developed by our volunteer researchers (LSD project) since 1993. The most prominent feature of the LSD is that both English and Japanese terms are collected based on the frequency in the corpora of scientific documents, abstracts and textbooks. Here, we describe the current status of LSD services and its original database, together with the differences between English and Japanese terms uncovered through our recent development of life science ontology.
