We discuss the damping of inflationary gravitational waves (GW) that re-enter the horizon before or during an epoch, where the energy budget of the universe is dominated by an unstable right handed neutrino (RHN), whose out of equilibrium decay releases entropy. Starting from the minimal Standard Model extension, motivated by the observed neutrino mass scale, with nothing more than 3 RHN for the Seesaw mechanism, we discuss the conditions for high scale leptogenesis assuming a thermal initial population of RHN. We further address the associated production of potentially light non-thermal dark matter and a potential component of dark radiation from the same RHN decay. One of our main findings is that the frequency, above which the damping of the tensor modes is potentially observable, is completely determined by successful leptogenesis and a Davidson-Ibarra type bound to be at around $0.1\;\text{Hz}$. To quantify the detection prospects of this GW background for various proposed interferometers such as AEDGE, BBO, DECIGO, Einstein Telescope or LISA we compute the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This allows us to investigate the viable parameter space of our model, spanned by the mass of the decaying RHN $M_1 \gtrsim 2.4\times 10^8\;\text{GeV} \cdot \sqrt{2\times 10^{-7}\;\text{eV}/\tilde{m}_1}$ (for leptogenesis) and the effective neutrino mass parameterizing its decay width $\tilde{m}_1< 2.9\times 10^{-7}\;\text{eV}$ (for RHN matter domination). Ultra-low mass primordial black holes (PBH), which may briefly dominate the energy density of the universe but completely evaporate before the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), can lead to interesting observable signatures. In our previous work, we studied the generation of a doubly peaked spectrum of induced stochastic gravitational wave background (ISGWB) for such a scenario and explored the possibility of probing a class of baryogenesis models wherein the emission of massive unstable particles from the PBH evaporation and their subsequent decay contributes to the matter-antimatter asymmetry. In this work, we extend the scope of our earlier work by including spinning PBHs and consider the emission of light relativistic dark sector particles, which contribute to the dark radiation (DR) and massive stable dark sector particles, thereby accounting for the dark matter (DM) component of the universe. The ISGWB can probe the non-thermal production of these heavy DM particles, which cannot be accessible in laboratory searches. For the case of DR, we find a novel complementarity between the measurements of $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$ from these emitted particles and the ISGWB from PBH domination. Our results indicate that the ISGWB has a weak dependence on the initial PBH spin. However, for gravitons as the DR particles, the initial PBH spin plays a significant role, and only above a critical value of the initial spin parameter $a_*$, which depends only on initial PBH mass, the graviton emission can be probed in the CMB-HD experiment. We study gravitational collapse for the Starobinsky $R^2$ model, a particular example of an $f(r)$ theory, in a spherically symmetric spacetime. We add a massless scalar field as matter content to the spacetime. We work in the Einstein frame, where an additional scalar field arises due to the conformal transformation. As in general relativity, depending on the initial data, we found that the gravity scalar field and the physical scalar field can collapse, forming a black hole, in which the final solution is the Schwarzschild metric. We found the threshold of black hole formation through a fine-tuning method and studied critical collapse near this regime., 15 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the possibility of the enhancement of parity-violation signal in bouncing cosmology. Specifically, we are interested in deciding which phase should generate the most significant parity-violation signals. We find that the dominant contribution comes from the bouncing phase, while the contraction phase has a smaller contribution. Therefore, bouncing cosmology can enhance the parity-violation signals during the bouncing phase. Moreover, since the bouncing phase has the highest energy scale in bouncing cosmology, we can also probe new physics at this scale by studying the parity-violation effect., Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures

In a QFT on de Sitter background, one can study correlators between fields pushed to the future and past horizons of a comoving observer. This is a neat probe of the physics in the observer's causal diamond (known as the static patch). We use this observable to give a generalization of the quasinormal spectrum in interacting theories, and to connect it to the spectral density that appears in the K\"all\'en-Lehmann expansion of dS correlators. We also introduce a finite-temperature effective field theory consisting of free bulk fields coupled to a boundary. In matching it to the low frequency expansion of correlators, we find positivity constraints on the EFT parameters following from unitarity., Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures

Two-field mimetic gravity was recently realized by looking at the singular limit of the conformal transformation between the auxiliary metric and the physical metric with two scalar fields involved. In this paper, we reanalyze the singular conformal limit and find a more general solution for the conformal factor A, which greatly broadens the form of two-field mimetic constraint and thus extends the two-field mimetic gravity. We find the general setup still mimics the roles of dark matter at the cosmological background level. Moreover, we extend the action by introducing extra possible term for phenomenological interests. Surprisingly, some special cases are found to be equivalent to general relativity, k-essence theory and Galileon theory. Finally, we further extend the theory by allowing the expression of mimetic constraint to be arbitrary without imposed condition, and show that the dark matter-like behavior is unaffected even in this extension., 17 pages, the version accepted by JHEP

We study the non-linear stability of fixed-point solutions to the $\alpha'$-exact equations from O$(d,d)$ invariant cosmology, with and without matter perturbations. Previous non-linear analysis in the literature is revisited, and its compatibility with known linear perturbation results is shown. Some formal aspects of cosmological perturbations in duality invariant cosmology are discussed, and we show the existence of time-reparameterization invariant variables for perturbations., Comment: 15 pages

We discuss the possibility of entanglement islands in cosmological spacetimes with a general perfect fluid with an equation of state $w$. We find that flat universes with time-symmetric slices where the Hubble parameter vanishes always have islands on that slice. We then move away from such slices, considering still universes with a general perfect fluid. Under the local thermal equilibrium assumption, the comoving entropy density $s_c$ is constant. As a result, the conditions for an island become an inequality between the energy density (or Hubble parameter) and the temperature at some time of normalization. The consequences are that islands can exist for practically all fluids that are not radiation, i.e. $w\neq 1/3$. We also discuss the ramifications of our results for universes with spatial curvature. Finally, we show that islands occur in the Simple Harmonic Universe model which has no classical singularity at the background level, in contrast to all previous examples where islands occurred only in space-times with singularities., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

We study quantum field theory on a de Sitter spacetime dS$_{d+1}$ background. Our main tool is the Hilbert space decomposition in irreducible unitary representations of its isometry group $SO(d+1,1)$. As the first application of the Hilbert space formalism, we recover the K\"allen-Lehmann spectral decomposition of the scalar bulk two-point function. In the process, we exhibit a relation between poles in the corresponding spectral densities and the boundary CFT data. Moreover, we derive an inversion formula for the spectral density through analytical continuation from the sphere and use it to find the spectral decompisiton for a few examples. Next, we study the conformal partial wave decomposition of the four-point functions of boundary operators. These correlation functions are very similar to the ones of standard conformal field theory, but have different positivity properties that follow from unitarity in de Sitter. We conclude by proposing a non-perturbative conformal bootstrap approach to the study of these late-time four-point functions, and we illustrate our proposal with a concrete example for QFT in dS$_2$., Comment: 54 pages + appendices, 3 figures; v2 corrections, fixed typos, added references, JHEP version

We derive soft theorems for theories in which time symmetries -- symmetries that involve the transformation of time, an example of which are Lorentz boosts -- are spontaneously broken. The soft theorems involve unequal-time correlation functions with the insertion of a soft Goldstone in the far past. Explicit checks are provided for several examples, including the effective theory of a relativistic superfluid and the effective field theory of inflation. We discuss how in certain cases these unequal-time identities capture information at the level of observables that cannot be seen purely in terms of equal-time correlators of the field alone. Key to the simplicity of supergravity alpha-attractor models of inflation are Volkov-Akulov fermions, often in the form of nilpotent superfields. Here we explore the possibility of using the double-copy to construct theories of Dirac-Born-Infeld-Volkov-Akulov (DBIVA) coupled to supergravity. A color-dual bootstrap admits scattering amplitudes involving pions and vectors through five-point tree-level order by order in mass-dimension, but requires the introduction of a tr(F^3) operator. Gauge theories with this operator were recently found to require a tower of higher-derivative operators to be compatible with the duality between color and kinematics. Adjoint-type double-copy construction at its most conservative seems to require the UV completion of DBVIA + pure Poincare supergravity scattering amplitudes to a family of theories involving DBVIA-like particles coupled to Weyl-Einstein supergravity. In this paper, we propose the aFL (axionic Festina Lente) bound, an extension of FL to axion-like particles arising from type II string theory. We find that the product of the instanton action and the axion decay constant is bounded from below by the vacuum energy. This is achieved indirectly, using dimensional reduction on Calabi-Yau threefolds, and translating the FL result for dipoles into a purely geometric bound. We discuss axionic black holes evolution, and aFL constraints on Euclidean wormholes, showing that the gravitational arguments leading to the FL bound for U(1) charged particles cannot be directly applied to axions. In this work, we investigate the existence of string theory solutions with a $d$-dimensional (quasi-) de Sitter spacetime, for $3 \leq d \leq 10$. Considering classical compactifications, we derive no-go theorems valid for general $d$. We use them to exclude (quasi-) de Sitter solutions for $d \geq 7$. In addition, such solutions are found unlikely to exist in $d=6,5$. For each no-go theorem, we further compute the $d$-dependent parameter $c$ of the swampland de Sitter conjecture, $M_p \frac{|\nabla V|}{V} \geq c$. Remarkably, the TCC bound $c \geq \frac{2}{\sqrt{(d-1)(d-2)}}$ is then perfectly satisfied for $d \geq 4$, with several saturation cases. However, we observe a violation of this bound in $d=3$. We revisit moduli stabilisation for type IIB flux compactifications that include a warped throat region corresponding to a warped deformed conifold, with an anti-D3-brane sitting at its tip. The warping induces a coupling between the conifold's deformation modulus and the bulk volume modulus in the K\"ahler potential. Previous works have studied the scalar potential assuming a strong warping such that this coupling term dominates, and found that the anti-D3-brane uplift may destabilise the conifold modulus and/or volume modulus, unless flux numbers within the throat are large, which makes tadpole cancellation a challenge. We explore the regime of parameter space corresponding to a weakly-but-still warped throat, such that the coupling between the conifold and volume moduli is subdominant. We thus discover a new metastable de Sitter solution within the four-dimensional effective field theory. Cosmological phase transitions in the primordial universe can produce anisotropic stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds (GWB), similar to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). For adiabatic perturbations, the fluctuations in GWB follow those in the CMB, but if primordial fluctuations carry an isocurvature component, this need no longer be true. It is shown that in non-minimal inflationary and reheating settings, primordial isocurvature can survive in GWB and exhibit significant non-Gaussianity (NG) in contrast to the CMB, while obeying current observational bounds. While probing such NG GWB is at best a marginal possibility at LISA, there is much greater scope at future proposed detectors such as DECIGO and BBO. It is even possible that the first observations of inflation-era NG could be made with gravitational wave detectors as opposed to the CMB or Large-Scale Structure surveys., Comment: 12+3 pages, 2 figures

Constant-rate inflation, including ultra-slow-roll as a special case, has been widely applied to the formation of primordial black holes with significant deviation from the standard slow-roll conditions at both the growing and decaying phases of the power spectrum. We derive analytic solutions for the curvature perturbations with respect to the late-time scaling dimensions (conformal weights) constrained by the dilatation symmetry of the de Sitter background and show that the continuity of conformal weights across different rolling phases is protected by the adiabatic condition of the inflaton perturbation. Our understanding of quantum correlators in cosmological spacetimes, including those that we can observe in cosmological surveys, has improved qualitatively in the past few years. Now we know many constraints that these objects must satisfy as consequences of general physical principles, such as symmetries, unitarity and locality. Using this new understanding, we derive the most general scalar four-point correlator, i.e., the trispectrum, to all orders in derivatives for manifestly local contact interactions. To obtain this result we use techniques from commutative algebra to write down all possible scalar four-particle amplitudes without assuming invariance under Lorentz boosts. We then input these amplitudes into a contact reconstruction formula that generates a contact cosmological correlator in de Sitter spacetime from a contact scalar or graviton amplitude. We also show how the same procedure can be used to derive higher-point contact cosmological correlators. Our results further extend the reach of the boostless cosmological bootstrap and build a new connection between flat and curved spacetime physics., 31 pages

We make a first principle study of gravitational pressure in cosmic thermodynamics. The pressure is directly derived from the unified first law, in fact the Einstein field equation in spherically symmetric spacetime. By using this pressure, we obtain the thermodynamics for the FRW universe, especially presenting the gravitational equation of state for the FRW spacetime itself, i.e. $P=P(R_A, T)$ for the first time. Furthermore, we study the Joule-Thomson expansion as an application of the thermodynamic equation of state to find the cooling-heating property of the FRW universe. We demonstrate that there is an inversion temperature for a FRW universe if its enthalpy ${\cal H}$ is negative. We study the formation and evolution of vortices in $U(1)$ dark photon dark matter and dark photon clouds that arise through black hole superradiance. We show how the production of both longitudinal mode and transverse mode dark photon dark matter can lead to the formation of vortices. After vortex formation, the energy stored in the dark photon dark matter will be transformed into a large number of vortex strings, eradicating the coherent dark photon dark matter field. In the case where a dark photon magnetic field is produced, bundles of vortex strings are formed in a superheated phase transition, and evolve towards a configuration consisting of many string loops that are uncorrelated on large scales, analogous to a melting phase transition in condensed matter. In the process, they dissipate via dark photon and gravitational wave emission, offering a target for experimental searches. Vortex strings were also recently shown to form in dark photon superradiance clouds around black holes, and we discuss the dynamics and observational consequences of this phenomenon with phenomenologically motivated parameters. In that case, the string loops ejected from the superradiance cloud, apart from producing gravitational waves, are also quantised magnetic flux lines and can be looked for with magnetometers. Assuming unitarity, locality, causality, and Lorentz invariance of the, otherwise unknown, UV completion, we derive a new set of constraints on the effective field theory coefficients for the most general, ghost-free Generalized Proca and Proca Nuevo massive vector models. For the Generalized Proca model, we include new interactions that had not been previously considered in the context of positivity bounds and find these additional terms lead to a widened parameter space for the previously considered interactions. We investigate the effect of the quadratic correction $\alpha R^2$ and non-minimal coupling $\xi \phi^2 R$ on a quintessence model with an exponential potential $V(\phi) = M^4\exp(-\lambda\phi)$ in the Palatini formulation of gravity. We use dynamical system techniques to analyze the attractor structure of the model and uncover the possible trajectories of the system. We find that the quadratic correction cannot play a role in the late time dynamics, except for unacceptably large values of the parameter $\alpha$; although it can play a role at early times. We find viable evolutions, from a matter-dominated phase to an accelerated expansion phase, with the dynamics driven by the non-minimal coupling. Gravitational production of massive particles due to cosmic expansion can be significant during the inflationary and reheating period of the Universe. If the particle also has non-gravitational interactions that do not significantly affect its production, numerous observational probes open up, including cosmological probes. In this work, we focus on the gravitational production of light vector bosons that couple feebly to the Standard Model (SM) particles. Due to the very feeble coupling, the light vector bosons never reach thermal equilibrium, and if the Hubble scale at the end of inflation is above $10^8$ GeV, the gravitational production can overwhelm the thermal production via the freeze-in mechanism by many orders of magnitude. As a result, much stronger constraints from the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) can be placed on the lifetime and mass of the vector bosons compared to the scenario where only thermal production is considered. As an example, we study the sub-GeV scale dark photons, which couple to the SM only through kinetic mixing, and derive constraints on the mass and kinetic mixing parameter of the dark photon from the photodisintegration effects on the light element abundances relevant at the end of the BBN when the cosmic age was around $10^4$ s., 26 pages + references, 8 figures, minor changes from previous version, matches published version in JHEP

The causal tail of stochastic gravitational waves can be used to probe the energy density in free streaming relativistic species as well as measure $g_\star(T)$ and beta functions $\beta(T)$ as a function of temperature. In the event of the discovery of loud stochastic gravitational waves, we demonstrate that LISA can measure the free streaming fraction of the universe down to the the $10^{-3}$ level, 100 times more sensitive than current constraints. Additionally, it would be sensitive to $\mathcal{O}(1)$ deviations of $g_\star$ and the QCD $\beta$ function from their Standard Model value at temperatures $\sim 10^5$ GeV. In this case, many motivated models such as split SUSY and other solutions to the Electroweak Hierarchy problem would be tested. Future detectors, such as DECIGO, would be 100 times more sensitive than LISA to these effects and be capable of testing other motivated scenarios such as WIMPs and axions. Gravity and general relativity are considered as an Effective Field Theory at low energies and macroscopic distances. The effective action of the conformal anomaly of light or massless quantum fields has significant effects on macroscopic scales, due to associated light cone singularities that are not captured by an expansion in local curvature invariants. A compact local form for the WZ effective action of the conformal anomaly and stress tensor is given, requiring the introduction of a new light scalar field, which it is argued should be included in the low energy effective action for gravity. The scalar conformalon couples to the conformal part of the spacetime metric and allows the effective value of the vacuum energy, described as a condensate of a 4-form abelian gauge field strength F=dA, to change in space and time. This is achieved by the identification of the torsion dependent part of the Chern-Simons 3-form of the Euler class with the gauge potential A, which enters the effective action of the conformal anomaly as a J.A interaction analogous to electromagnetism. The conserved 3-current J describes the worldtube of 2-surfaces that separate regions of differing vacuum energy. The resulting EFT thus replaces the fixed constant Lambda of classical gravity, and its apparently unnaturally large sensitivity to UV physics, with a dynamical condensate whose ground state value in empty flat space is Lambda = 0 identically. By allowing Lambda to vary rapidly near the 2-surface of a black hole horizon, the proposed EFT of dynamical vacuum energy provides an effective Lagrangian for gravitational condensate stars, as the final state of complete gravitational collapse consistent with quantum theory. Explorations of the violation of null energy condition (NEC) in cosmology could enrich our understanding of the very early universe and the related gravity theories. Although a fully stable NEC violation can be realized in the ``beyond Horndeski'' theory, it remains an open question whether a violation of the NEC is allowed by some fundamental properties of UV-complete theories or the consistency requirements of effective field theory (EFT). We investigate the tree-level perturbative unitarity for stable NEC violations in the contexts of both Galileon and ``beyond Horndeski'' genesis cosmology, in which the universe is asymptotically Minkowskian in the past. We find that the constraints of perturbative unitarity imply that we may need some unknown new physics below the cut-off scale of the EFT other than that represented by the ``beyond Horndeski'' operators., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures; updated to match the published version

We study the stability of the electroweak vacuum during and after the Starobinsky inflation, assuming the existence of the non-minimal Higgs coupling to the Ricci scalar. In the Starobinsky inflation, there exists $R^2$ term (with $R$ being the Ricci scalar), which modifies the evolution equation of the Higgs field. We consider the case that the non-minimal coupling is sizable so that the quantum fluctuation of the Higgs field is suppressed and that the Higgs amplitude is settled near the origin during the inflation. In such a case, the Higgs amplitude may be amplified in the preheating epoch after inflation because of the parametric resonance due to the non-minimal coupling. We perform a detailed analysis of the evolution of the Higgs field in the preheating epoch by a numerical lattice simulation and derive an upper bound on the non-minimal coupling constant $\xi$ in order to realize the electroweak vacuum in the present universe. We find that the upper bound on $\xi$ in the Starobinsky inflation model is more stringent than that in conventional inflation models without the $R^2$ term., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

Complex metrics are a double-edged sword: they allow one to replace singular spacetimes, such as those containing a big bang, with regular metrics, yet they can also describe unphysical solutions in which quantum transitions may be more probable than ordinary classical evolution. In the cosmological context, we investigate a criterion proposed by Witten (based on works of Kontsevich & Segal and of Louko & Sorkin) to decide whether a complex metric is allowable or not. Because of the freedom to deform complex metrics using Cauchy's theorem, deciding whether a metric is allowable in general requires solving a complicated optimisation problem. We describe a method that allows one to quickly determine the allowability of minisuperspace metrics. This enables us to study the off-shell structure of minisuperspace path integrals, which we investigate for various boundary conditions. Classical transitions always reside on the boundary of the domain of allowable metrics, and care must be taken in defining appropriate integration contours for the corresponding gravitational path integral. Perhaps more surprisingly, we find that proposed quantum (`tunnelling') transitions from a contracting to an expanding universe violate the allowability criterion and may thus be unphysical. No-boundary solutions, by contrast, are found to be allowable, and moreover we demonstrate that with an initial momentum condition an integration contour over allowable metrics may be explicitly described in arbitrary spacetime dimensions., Matches the published version. 38 pages, 14 figures

We study fermions derivatively coupled to axion-like or pseudoscalar fields, and show that the axial vector current of the fermions is not conserved in the limit where the fermion is massless. This apparent violation of the classical chiral symmetry is due to the background axion field. We compute the contributions to this anomalous Ward identity due to the pseudoscalar field alone, which arise in Minkowski space, as well as the effects due to an interaction with an external gravitational field. For the case of massless fermions, these interactions induce terms in the axion effective action that can be removed by the addition of local counterterms. We demonstrate that these counterterms are generated by the transformation of the path integral measure when transforming the theory from a form where the chiral symmetry is manifest to one where the symmetry is only apparent after using the classical equations of motion. We work perturbatively in Minkowski space and include the effects of interactions with a linearized gravitational field. Using the heat kernel method, we study the transformation properties of the path integral measure, and include the effects of non-linear gravity as well as interactions with gauge fields. Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes (PBHs) can facilitate the generation of matter-antimatter asymmetry. We focus on ultra-low mass PBHs that briefly dominate the universe and evaporate before the big bang nucleosynthesis. We propose a novel test of this scenario by detecting its characteristic doubly peaked gravitational wave (GW) spectrum in future GW observatories. Here the first order adiabatic perturbation from inflation and from the isocurvature perturbations due to PBH distribution, source tensor perturbations in second-order and lead to two peaks in the induced GW background. These resonant peaks are generated at the beginning of standard radiation domination in the presence of a prior PBH-dominated era. This unique GW spectral shape would provide a smoking gun signal of non-thermal baryogenesis from evaporating PBHs, which is otherwise impossible to test in laboratory experiments due to the very high energy scales involved or the feeble interaction of the dark sector with the visible sector., 26 pages, 4 figures, version accepted for publication in JHEP

We propose a new swampland conjecture stating that the limit of vanishing gravitino mass corresponds to the massless limit of an infinite tower of states and to the consequent breakdown of the effective field theory. We test our proposal in large classes of models coming from compactification of string theory to four dimensions, where we identify the Kaluza-Klein nature of the tower of states becoming light. We point out a general relation between the gravitino mass and abelian gauge coupling in models with extended supersymmetry, which can survive also in examples with minimal supersymmetry. This allows us to connect our conjecture to other well established swampland conjectures, such as the weak gravity conjecture or the absence of global symmetries in quantum gravity. We analyze gravitational particle production assisted by chemical potential. By utilizing the uniformly smoothed Stokes-line method and Borel summation, we gain insight into the fine-grained history of enhanced particle production. Analytic/semi-analytic formulae describing the production amount, time and width are obtained for both spin-1 and spin-1/2 particles in various FRW spacetimes. We investigate first order phase transitions in a holographic setting of five-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field, constructing phase diagrams of the dual field theory at finite temperature. We scan over the two-dimensional parameter space of a simple bottom-up model and map out important quantities for the phase transition: the region where first order phase transitions take place; the latent heat, the transition strength parameter $\alpha$, and the stiffness. We find that $\alpha$ is generically in the range 0.1 to 0.3, and is strongly correlated with the stiffness (the square of the sound speed in a barotropic fluid). Using the LISA Cosmology Working Group gravitational wave power spectrum model corrected for kinetic energy suppression at large $\alpha$ and non-conformal stiffness, we outline the observational prospects at the future space-based detectors LISA and TianQin. For inflation driven by the Higgs field coupled non-minimally to gravity, we study the cutoff energy scale above which perturbation theory breaks down. Employing the metric formulation, we first give an overview of known results and then provide a new way to calculate a lower bound on the cutoff. Our approach neither relies on a gauge choice nor does it require any calculation of amplitudes. Instead, it exploits the fact that the S-matrix is invariant under field redefinitions. In agreement with previous findings, we demonstrate that the cutoff is significantly higher during inflation than in vacuum, which ensures the robustness of semi-classical predictions. We apply the multiple point criticality principle to inflationary model building and study Coleman-Weinberg inflation when the scalar potential is quadratic in the logarithmic correction. We analyze also the impact of a non-minimal coupling to gravity under two possible gravity formulation: metric or Palatini. We investigate both the null energy condition (NEC) violating scenario and the $c_T$-diminishing scenario for generating enhanced power spectrum of primordial gravitational waves (GWs) during inflation, where $c_T$ is the propagating speed of primordial GWs. Both of these two scenarios can be realized stably with theories beyond Horndeski, hence can be uniformly implemented within the framework of the effective field theory. We calculate the power spectrum of primordial GWs by assuming that the inflationary Universe undergoes three phases, where the violation of NEC or the diminishment of $c_T$ occurs in the intermediate phase. A template of the spectrum is given for the NEC-violating scenario. The generic scale-invariant theory of an axion and a dilaton coupled to gravity in $d$-dimensions is generalized to a `universal' one-axion model with two dilatons that reproduces itself under consistent dimensional-reduction/truncation. Flat FLRW cosmologies are shown to correspond to trajectories of a three-dimensional autonomous dynamical system, which we analyse with a focus on accelerated cosmic expansion, deriving the precise swampland bounds that exclude eternal acceleration. We also show that for two sets of values of its three independent parameters, the model is a consistent truncation of maximal `massive' supergravity theories arising from string/M-theory; for these maximal-supergravity parameter values the FLRW cosmologies include some with a transient de Sitter-like phase, but not the recurring de Sitter-like phase or eternal cosmic acceleration that is possible for other parameter values., 35 pages, 5 figures

Gravitational interferometers and cosmological observations of the cosmic microwave background offer us the prospect to probe the laws of gravity in the primordial universe. To study and interpret these datasets we need to know the possible graviton non-Gaussianities. To this end, we derive the most general tree-level three-point functions (bispectra) for a massless graviton to all orders in derivatives, assuming scale invariance. Instead of working with explicit Lagrangians, we take a bootstrap approach and obtain our results using the recently derived constraints from unitarity, locality and the choice of vacuum. Since we make no assumptions about de Sitter boosts, our results capture the phenomenology of large classes of models such as the effective field theory of inflation and solid inflation. We present formulae for the infinite number of parity-even bispectra. Remarkably, for parity-odd bispectra, we show that unitarity allows for only a handful of possible shapes: three for graviton-graviton-graviton, three for scalar-graviton-graviton and one for scalar-scalar-graviton, which we bootstrap explicitly. Transforming canonical scalars to the Einstein frame can give a multi-field generalization of pole inflation (namely, a scalar with a divergent kinetic term) at vanishing field-dependent Planck mass. However, to obtain an attractor, the scalar potential must obey certain non-generic conditions. These are automatically satisfied in Quantum Field Theories with dimension-less couplings. The resulting models of pole inflation have special inflationary predictions determined by the full RG running of couplings. Boltzmann equation plays important roles in particle cosmology in studying the evolution of distribution functions (also called as occupation numbers) of various particles. For the case of the decay of a scalar condensation $\phi$ into a pair of scalar particles (called $\chi$), we point out that the system may not be well described by the Boltzmann equation when the occupation number of $\chi$ becomes large even in the so-called narrow resonance regime. We study the particle production including the possible enhancement due to a large occupation number of the final state particle, known as the stimulated emission or the parametric resonance. Based on the quantum field theory (QFT), we derive a set of equations which directly govern the evolution of the distribution function of $\chi$. Comparing the results of the QFT calculation and those from the Boltzmann equation, we find non-agreements in some cases. In particular, in the expanding Universe, the occupation number of $\chi$ based on the QFT may differ by many orders of magnitude from that from the Boltzmann equation. Two types of mimetic gravity models with higher derivatives of the mimetic field are analyzed in the Hamiltonian formalism. For the first type of mimetic gravity, the Ricci scalar only couples to the mimetic field and we demonstrate the number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) is three. Then in both Einstein frame and Jordan frame, we perform the Hamiltonian analysis for the extended mimetic gravity with higher derivatives directly coupled to the Ricci scalar. We show that different from previous studies working at the cosmological perturbation level, where only three propagating DOFs show up, this generalized mimetic model, in general, has four DOFs. To understand this discrepancy, we consider the unitary gauge and find out that the number of DOFs reduces to three. We conclude that the reason why this system looks peculiar is that the Dirac matrix of all secondary constraints becomes singular in the unitary gauge, resulting in extra secondary constraints and thus reducing the number of DOFs. Furthermore, we give a simple example of a dynamic system to illustrate how gauge choice can affect the number of secondary constraints as well as the DOFs when the rank of the Dirac matrix is gauge dependent., 24 pages, comments are welcome

We study M-theory compactified on twisted 7-tori with $G_2$-holonomy. The effective 4d supergravity has 7 chiral multiplets, each with a unit logarithmic K\"ahler potential. We propose octonion, Fano plane based superpotentials, codifying the error correcting Hamming (7,4) code. The corresponding 7-moduli models have Minkowski vacua with one flat direction. We also propose superpotentials based on octonions/error correcting codes for Minkowski vacua models with two flat directions. We update phenomenological $\alpha$-attractor models of inflation with $3\alpha=7,6,5,4,3,1$, based on inflation along these flat directions. Global cosmic strings are predicted in many motivated extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics, with close connections to axion dark matter physics. Recent studies suggest that, although subdominant relative to Goldstone emission, gravitational wave (GW) signals from global strings can be detectable with current and planned GW detectors such as LIGO, LISA, DECIGO/BBO, ET/CE and AEDGE/AION, as well as pulsar timing arrays such as PPTA, NANOGrav and SKA. This work is an extensive, updated study on GWs from a global cosmic string network, taking into account of the most recent developments related to the subject. The main analysis is based on the analytical Velocity-dependent One-Scale (VOS) model calibrated with recent simulation results, which provides a generic protocol for such calculations with details given. We also demonstrate how the GW signal can be influenced with variations to the baseline model: this includes considering the uncertainties of model parameters and the potential deviation from the conventional VOS model prediction (i.e. the scaling behavior) as suggested by some of the recent simulation results. Furthermore, we investigated in detail the effect of a non-standard cosmology (e.g. early matter domination or kination) or new particle species on the GW signals from global strings. We consider two nonlinear sigma models on de Sitter background which involve the same derivative interactions as quantum gravity but without the gauge issue. The first model contains only a single field, which can be reduced to a free theory by a local field redefinition; the second contains two fields and cannot be so reduced. Loop corrections in both models produce large temporal and spatial logarithms which cause perturbation theory to break down at late times and large distances. Many of these logarithms derive from the "tail" part of the propagator and can be summed using a variant of Starobinsky's stochastic formalism involving a curvature-dependent effective potential. The remaining logarithms derive from the ultraviolet and can be summed using a variant of the renormalization group based on a special class of curvature-dependent renormalizations. Matrix theory is a proposed non-perturbative definition of superstring theory in which space is emergent. We begin a study of cosmology in the context of matrix theory. Specifically, we show that matrix theory can lead to an emergent non-singular cosmology which, at late times, can be described by an expanding phase of Standard Big Bang cosmology. The horizon problem of Standard Big Bang cosmology is automatically solved. We show that thermal fluctuations in the emergent phase source an approximately scale-invariant spectrum of cosmological perturbations and a scale-invariant spectrum of gravitational waves. Hence, it appears that matrix theory can lead to a successful scenario for the origin of perturbations responsible for the currently observed structure in the universe while providing a consistent UV-complete description., 12 pages; comments welcome

We consider single graviton loop corrections to the effective field equation of a massless, minimally coupled scalar on de Sitter background in the simplest gauge. We find a large temporal logarithm in the approach to freeze-in at late times, but no correction to the feeze-in amplitude. We also find a large spatial logarithm (at large distances) in the scalar potential generated by a point source, which can be explained using the renormalization group with one of the higher derivative counterterms regarded as a curvature-dependent field strength renormalization. Cosmological particle production by a time-dependent scalar field is common in cosmology. We focus on the mechanism of asymmetry production when interaction explicitly violates symmetry and its motion is rapid enough to create particles by itself. Combining the exact WKB analysis and the Landau-Zener transition, we point out that perturbation before the non-perturbative analysis may drastically change the structure of the Stokes lines of the theory. The recently suggested Festina-Lente (FL) bound provides a lower bound on the masses of ${\rm U(1)}$ charged particles in terms of the positive vacuum energy. Since the charged particle masses in the Standard Model (SM) are generated by the Higgs mechanism, the FL bound provides a testbed of consistent Higgs potentials in the current dark energy-dominated universe as well as during inflation. We study the implications of the FL bound on the UV behavior of the Higgs potential for a miniscule vacuum energy, as in the current universe. We present a cosmological solution to the electroweak hierarchy problem. After discussing general features of cosmological approaches to naturalness, we extend the Standard Model with two light scalars very weakly coupled to the Higgs and present the mechanism, which we recently introduced in a companion paper to explain jointly the electroweak hierarchy and the strong-CP problem. In this work we show that this solution can be decoupled from the strong-CP problem and discuss its possible implementations and phenomenology. The mechanism works with any standard inflationary sector, it does not require weak-scale inflation or a large number of e-folds, and does not introduce ambiguities related to eternal inflation. The cutoff of the theory can be as large as the Planck scale, both for the Cosmological Constant and for the Higgs sector. Reproducing the observed dark matter relic density fixes the couplings of the two new scalars to the Standard Model, offering a target to future axion or fifth force searches. Depending on the specific interaction of the scalars with the Standard Model, the mechanism either yields rich phenomenology at colliders or provides a novel joint solution to the strong-CP problem. We present an explicit string realisation of a cosmological inflationary scenario we proposed recently within the framework of type IIB flux compactifications in the presence of three magnetised D7-brane stacks. Inflation takes place around a metastable de Sitter vacuum. The inflaton is identified with the volume modulus and has a potential with a very shallow minimum near the maximum. We propose a Euclidean preparation of an asymptotically AdS$_2$ spacetime that contains an inflating dS$_2$ bubble. The setup can be embedded in a four dimensional theory with a Minkowski vacuum and a false vacuum. AdS$_2$ times 2-sphere approximate the near horizon geometry of a $4d$ near-extremal RN wormhole. Likewise, in the false vacuum the near-horizon geometry of a near-extremal black hole is approximately dS$_2$ times 2-sphere. We interpret the Euclidean solution as describing the decay of an excitation inside the wormhole to a false vacuum bubble.
