The propagator which evolves the wave-function in non-relativistic quantum mechanics, can be expressed as a matrix element of a time evolution operator: i.e. GNR(x) = 〈x2|UNR(t)|x1〉 in terms of the orthonormal eigenkets |x〉 of the position operator. In quantum field theory, it is not possible to define a conceptually useful single-particle position operator or its eigenkets. It is also not possible to interpret the relativistic (Feynman) propagator GR(x) as evolving any kind of single-particle wave-functions. In spite of all these, it is indeed possible to express the propagator of a free spinless particle, in quantum field theory, as a matrix element 〈x2|UR(t)|x1〉 for a suitably defined time evolution operator and (non-orthonormal) kets |x〉 labeled by spatial coordinates. At mesoscopic scales, which are close but not too close to Planck scale, one can incorporate quantum gravitational corrections to the propagator by introducing a zero-point-length. It turns out that even this quantum-gravity-corrected propagator can be expressed as a matrix element 〈x2|UQG(t)|x1〉. I describe these results and explore several consequences. It turns out that the evolution operator UQG(t) becomes non-unitary for sub-Planckian time intervals while remaining unitary for time interval is larger than Planck time. We propose a Euclidean preparation of an asymptotically AdS2 spacetime that contains an inflating dS2 bubble. The setup can be embedded in a four dimensional theory with a Minkowski vacuum and a false vacuum. AdS2 approximates the near horizon geometry of a two-sided near-extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole, and the two sides can connect to the same Minkowski asymptotics to form a topologically nontrivial worm- hole geometry. Likewise, in the false vacuum the near-horizon geometry of near-extremal black holes is approximately dS2 times 2-sphere. We interpret the Euclidean solution as describing the decay of an excitation inside the wormhole to a false vacuum bubble. We perform a Feynman diagram calculation of the two-loop scattering amplitude for gravitationally interacting massive particles in the classical limit. Conveniently, we are able to sidestep the most taxing diagrams by exploiting the test-particle limit in which the system is fully characterized by a particle propagating in a Schwarzschild spacetime. We assume a general choice of graviton field basis and gauge fixing that contains as a subset the well-known deDonder gauge and its various cousins. As a highly nontrivial consistency check, all gauge parameters evaporate from the final answer. Moreover, our result exactly matches that of Bern et al. [39], here verified up to sixth post-Newtonian order while also reproducing the same unique velocity resummation at third post-Minkowksian order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct a model of quantum gravity in which dimension, topology and geometry of spacetime are dynamical. The microscopic degree of freedom is a real rectangular matrix whose rows label internal flavours, and columns label spatial sites. In the limit that the size of the matrix is large, the sites can collectively form a spatial manifold. The manifold is determined from the pattern of entanglement present across local Hilbert spaces associated with column vectors of the matrix. With no structure of manifold fixed in the background, the spacetime gauge symmetry is generalized to a group that includes diffeomorphism in arbitrary dimensions. The momentum and Hamiltonian that generate the generalized diffeomorphism obey a first-class constraint algebra at the quantum level. In the classical limit, the constraint algebra of the general relativity is reproduced as a special case. The first-class nature of the algebra allows one to express the projection of a quantum state of the matrix to a gauge invariant state as a path integration of dynamical variables that describe collective fluctuations of the matrix. The collective variables describe dynamics of emergent spacetime, where multi-fingered times arise as Lagrangian multipliers that enforce the gauge constraints. If the quantum state has a local structure of entanglement, a smooth spacetime with well-defined dimension, topology, signature and geometry emerges at the saddle-point, and the spin two mode that determines the geometry can be identified. We find a saddle-point solution that describes a series of (3 + 1)-dimensional de Sitter-like spacetimes with the Lorentzian signature bridged by Euclidean spaces in between. The phase transitions between spacetimes with different signatures are caused by Lifshitz transitions in which the pattern of entanglement is rearranged across the system. The symmetry group of the de Sitter spacetime, accommodates fields of various masses and spin among its unitary irreducible representations. These unitary representations are labeled by the spin and the weight contribution to the scaling dimension and depending on the mass and spin of the field the weight may take either purely real or purely imaginary values. In this work, we construct the late time boundary operators for a massive scalar field propagating in de Sitter spacetime, in arbitrary dimensions. We show that contrary to the case of Anti de Sitter, purely imaginery weights also correspond to unitary operators, as well as the ones with real weight, and identify the corresponding unitary representations. A Page curve for an evaporating black hole in asymptotically flat spacetime is computed by adapting the Quantum Ryu-Takayanagi (QRT) proposal to an analytically solvable semi-classical two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory. The Page time is found to be one third of the black hole lifetime, at leading order in semi-classical corrections. A Page curve is also obtained for a semi-classical eternal black hole, where energy loss due to Hawking evaporation is balanced by an incoming energy flux. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We compute fluctuations in the modular energy of the vacuum associated with a Rindler-wedge in AdS spacetime in the context of AdS/CFT. We discuss the possible effect of these energy fluctuations on the spacetime geometry, and on the traversal time of a light beam propagating from the boundary to the bulk and back. We initiate a study of subregion dualities, entropy, and redundant encoding of bulk points in holographic theories deformed by T T ¯ and its generalizations. This includes both cut off versions of Anti de Sitter spacetime, as well as the generalization to bulk de Sitter spacetime, for which we introduce two additional examples capturing different patches of the bulk and incorporating the second branch of the square root dressed energy formula. We provide new calculations of entanglement entropy (EE) for more general divisions of the system than the symmetric ones previously available. We find precise agreement between the gravity side and deformed-CFT side results to all orders in the deformation parameter at large central charge. An analysis of the fate of strong subadditivity for relatively boosted regions indicates nonlocality reminiscent of string theory. We introduce the structure of operator algebras in these systems. The causal and entanglement wedges generalize to appropriate deformed theories but exhibit qualitatively new behaviors, e.g. the causal wedge may exceed the entanglement wedge. This leads to subtleties which we express in terms of the Hamiltonian and modular Hamiltonian evolution. Finally, we exhibit redundant encoding of bulk points, including the cosmological case. We consider quantum quench in large-N singlet sector quantum mechanics of a single hermitian matrix in the double scaling limit. The time dependent parameter is the self-coupling of the matrix. We find exact classical solutions of the collective field theory of the eigenvalue density with abrupt and smooth quench profiles which asymptote to constant couplings at early and late times, and with the system initially in its ground state. With adiabatic initial conditions we find that adiabaticity is always broken regardless of the quench speed. In a class of quench profiles the saddle point solution for the collective field diverges at a finite time, and a further time evolution becomes ambiguous. However the underlying matrix model expressed in terms of fermions predict a smooth time evolution across this point. By studying fluctuations around the saddle point solution we interpret the emergent space-times. They generically have spacelike boundaries where the couplings of the fluctuations diverge and the semi-classical description fails. We reexamine a family of models with a 3+1-dimensional de Sitter spacetime obtained in the standard tree-level low-energy limit of string theory with a non-trivial anisotropic axion-dilaton background. While such limiting approximations are encouraging but incomplete, our analysis reveals a host of novel features, and shows these models to relate standard and well understood supersymmetric string theory solutions. Finally, we conjecture that this de Sitter spacetime naturally arises by including more of the stringy degrees of freedom, such as a recently advanced variant of the non-commutative phase-space formalism, as well as the analytic continuation of a complex two-dimensional Fano variety arising as a small resolution in a Calabi-Yau 5-fold. We explore holographic entanglement entropy for Minkowski spacetime in three and four dimensions. Under some general assumptions on the putative holographic dual, the entanglement entropy associated to a special class of subregions can be computed using an analog of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. We refine the existing prescription in three dimensions and propose a generalization to four dimensions. Under reasonable assumptions on the holographic stress tensor, we show that the first law of entanglement is equivalent to the gravitational equations of motion in the bulk, linearized around Minkowski spacetime. The Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) requires Euclidean signature. The conformal factor of the metric then has a wrong-sign kinetic term, which has a profound effect on its RG properties. Generically for the conformal sector, complete flows exist only in the reverse direction (i.e. from the infrared to the ultraviolet). The Gaussian fixed point supports infinite sequences of composite eigenoperators of increasing infrared relevancy (increasingly negative mass dimension), which are orthonormal and complete for bare interactions that are square integrable under the appropriate measure. These eigenoperators are non-perturbative in ħ and evanescent. For R4 spacetime, each renormalized physical operator exists but only has support at vanishing field amplitude. In the generic case of infinitely many non-vanishing couplings, if a complete RG flow exists, it is characterised in the infrared by a scale Λp > 0, beyond which the field amplitude is exponentially suppressed. On other spacetimes, of length scale L, the flow ceases to exist once a certain universal measure of inhomogeneity exceeds O(1) + 2πL2Λ2p. Importantly for cosmology, the minimum size of the universe is thus tied to the degree of inhomogeneity, with spacetimes of vanishing size being required to be almost homogeneous. We initiate a study of this exotic quantum field theory at the interacting level, and discuss what the full theory of quantum gravity should look like, one which must thus be perturbatively renormalizable in Newton's constant but non-perturbative in ħ. The linearized equations of "New Massive Gravity" propagate a parity doublet of massive spin-2 modes in 3D Minkowski spacetime, but a different non-linear extension is made possible by "third-way" consistency. There is a "Chern-Simons-like" action, as for other 3D massive gravity models, but the new theory is "exotic": its action is parity odd. This "Exotic Massive Gravity" is the next-to-simplest case in an infinite sequence of third-way consistent 3D gravity theories, the simplest being the "Minimal Massive Gravity" alternative to "Topologically Massive Gravity". The physical relevance of the thermodynamic volumes of AdS black holes to the gravity duals of quantum complexity was recently argued by Couch et al. In this paper, by generalizing the Wald-Iyer formalism, we derive a geometric expression for the thermodynamic volume and relate its product with the thermodynamic pressure to the non-derivative part of the gravitational action evaluated on the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. We propose that this action provides an alternative gravity dual of the quantum complexity of the boundary theory. We refer this to "complexity=action 2.0" (CA-2) duality. It is significantly different from the original "complexity=action" (CA) duality as well as the "complexity=volume 2.0" (CV-2) duality proposed by Couch et al. The latter postulates that the complexity is dual to the spacetime volume of the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. To distinguish our new conjecture from the various dualities in literature, we study a number of black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilation theories. We find that for all these black holes, the CA duality generally does not respect the Lloyd bound whereas the CV-2 duality always does. For the CA-2 duality, although in many cases it is consistent with the Lloyd bound, we also find a counter example for which it violates the bound as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider partial supersymmetry breaking in N = 2 supergravity coupled to a single vector and a single hypermultiplet. This breaking pattern is in principle possible if the quaternion-Kähler space of the hypermultiplet admits (at least) one pair of commuting isometries. For this class of manifolds, explicit metrics exist and we analyse a generic electro-magnetic (dyonic) gauging of the isometries. An example of partial breaking in Minkowski spacetime has been found long ago by Ferrara, Girardello and Porrati, using the gauging of two translation isometries on SO(4, 1)/SO(4). We demonstrate that no other example of partial breaking of N = 2 supergravity in Minkowski spacetime exists. We also examine partial-breaking vacua in anti-de Sitter spacetime that are much less constrained and exist generically even for electric gaugings. Caron-Huot has recently given an interesting formula that determines OPE data in a conformal field theory in terms of a weighted integral of the four-point function over a Lorentzian region of cross-ratio space. We give a new derivation of this formula based on Wick rotation in spacetime rather than cross-ratio space. The derivation is simple in two dimensions but more involved in higher dimensions. We also derive a Lorentzian inversion formula in one dimension that sheds light on previous observations about the chaos regime in the SYK model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We show that a notion of one-particle state and the corresponding vacuum state exists in general curved backgrounds for spin 12 fields. A curved spacetime can be equipped with a coordinate system in which the metric component g--=0. We separate the component of the left-handed massless Dirac field which is annihilated by the null vector ∂- and compute the corresponding Feynman propagator. We find that the propagating modes are localized on two dimensional subspaces and the Feynman propagator is similar to the Feynman propagator of chiral fermions in two dimensional Minkowski spacetime. Therefore, it can be interpreted in terms of one-particle states and the corresponding vacuum state similarly to the second quantization in Minkowski spacetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider in any dimension the supersymmetric Z2 truncations of the maximal supergravity theories. In each dimension and for each truncation we determine all the sets of 1/2-BPS space-filling branes, i.e. branes whose world-volume invades the whole of space-time, that preserve the supersymmetry of the truncated theory and the representations of the symmetry of such theory to which they belong. We show that in any dimension below eight these sets always contain exotic branes, that are objects that do not have a ten-dimensional origin. We repeat the same analysis for half-maximal theories and for the quarter-maximal theories in four and three dimensions. We then discuss all the possible gaugings of these theories as described in terms of the embedding tensor. In general, the truncation acts on the quadratic constraints of the embedding tensor in such a way that some representations survive the truncation although they are not required by the supersymmetry of the truncated theory. We show that for any theory, among these representations, the highest-dimensional ones are precisely those of the 1/2-BPS space-filling branes that preserve the same supersymmetry of the truncated theory, and we interpret this result as the fact that these quadratic constraints after the truncation become tadpole conditions for such branes. We study (massive) spin-2 fluctuations around warped AdS6 solutions with 16 supersymmetries in type IIB supergravity. We identify two classes of fluctuations which are universally present for all solutions of this form. The holographically dual operators have scaling dimensions Δ = 5+3l and Δ = 6+3l, where the integer l encodes the R-symmetry charge. They are identified as descendant states in respective BPS multiplets (the current multiplet for Δ = 5). We also compute the normalization of the energy-momentum tensor two-point function and show that it is related to the S5 partition function of the dual 5d SCFTs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It was recently observed that Kerr-AdS metrics with negative mass can describe smooth spacetimes that have a region within which naked closed time-like curves can arise, bounded by a velocity of light surface. Such spacetimes are sometimes known as time machines. In this paper we study the BPS limit of these metrics, and find that the mass and angular momenta become discretised. The completeness of the spacetime also requires that the asymptotic time coordinate be periodic, with precisely the same period as that which arises naturally for the global AdS, viewed as a hyperboliod in one extra dimension, in which the time machine spacetime is immersed. For the case of equal angular momenta in odd dimensions, we construct the Killing spinors explicitly, and show they are consistent with the global structure. Thus in examples where the solutions can be embedded in gauged supergravity, they will be supersymmetric. We also compare the global structure of the BPS AdS3 time machine with the BTZ black hole, and show that the global structure allows two different supersymmetric limits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, it is found that when an external magnetic field parallel to the boundary is applied, Weyl anomaly gives rises to a new anomalous current transport in the vicinity of the boundary. At the leading order of closeness from the boundary, the current is determined universally by the central charge of the theory. In this paper, we give a holographic proof for the existence and universality for this transport phenomena. We show that the current is independent of boundary conditions in four dimensions while it depends on boundary conditions in other dimensions. We also study the backreaction of the bulk Maxwell fields on the AdS spacetime and obtain the holographic Weyl anomaly for 5d BCFTs in presence of the background field strength. We study the evolution of holographic subregion complexity under a thermal quench in this paper. From the subregion CV proposal in the AdS/CFT correspondence, the subregion complexity in the CFT is holographically captured by the volume of the codimension-one surface enclosed by the codimension-two extremal entanglement surface and the boundary subregion. Under a thermal quench, the dual gravitational configuration is described by a Vaidya-AdS spacetime. In this case wefind that the holographic subregion complexity always increases at early time, and after reaching a maximum it decreases and gets to saturation. Moreover we notice that when the size of the strip is large enough and the quench is fast enough, in AdSd+1(d ≥ 3) spacetime the evolution of the complexity is discontinuous and there is a sudden drop due to the transition of the extremal entanglement surface. We discuss the effects of the quench speed, the strip size, the black hole mass and the spacetime dimension on the evolution of the subregion complexity in detail numerically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a new world-line Lagrangian model of the D=4 massless relativistic particle with continuous spin and develop its twistorial formulation. The description uses two Penrose twistors subjected to four first class constraints. After the first quantization of the world-line twistorial model, the wave function is defined by an unconstrained function on the two-dimensional complex affine plane. We find the twistor transform that determines the space-time field of the continuous spin particle through the corresponding twistor one, which plays the role of a prepotential. It is shown that this space-time field is an exact solution of the space-time constraints defining the irreducible massless representation of the Poincaré group with continuous spin. Any 4d theory possessing $$ \mathcal{N}=1 $$ supersymmetry admits a so called $$ \mathcal{S} $$ -multiplet, containing the conserved energy-momentum tensor and supercurrent. When a defect is introduced into such a theory, the $$ \mathcal{S} $$ -multiplet receives contributions localised on the defect, which indicate the breaking of some translation symmetry and consequently also some supersymmetries. We call this the defect multiplet. We classify such terms corresponding to half-BPS defects which can be either three-dimensional, preserving 3d $$ \mathcal{N}=1 $$ , or two-dimensional, preserving $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(0,2\right) $$ . We realize the weak momentum relaxation in Rindler fluid, which lives on the time-like cutoff surface in an accelerating frame of flat spacetime. The translational invariance is broken by massless scalar fields with weak strength. Both of the Ward identity and the momentum relaxation rate of Rindler fluid are obtained, with higher order correction in terms of the strength of momentum relaxation. The Rindler fluid with momentum relaxation could also be approached through the near horizon limit of cutoff AdS fluid with momentum relaxation, which lives on a finite time-like cutoff surface in Anti-de Sitter(AdS) spacetime, and further could be connected with the holographic conformal fluid living on AdS boundary at infinity. Thus, in the holographic Wilson renormalization group flow of the fluid/gravity correspondence with momentum relaxation, the Rindler fluid can be considered as the Infrared Radiation(IR) fixed point, and the holographic conformal fluid plays the role of the ultraviolet(UV) fixed point. We show that there exists a class of charged BTZ-like black hole solutions in Lifshitz spacetime with a hyperscaling violating factor. The charged BTZ black hole is characterized by a charge-dependent logarithmic term in the metric function. As concrete examples, we give five such charged BTZ-like black hole solutions and the standard charged BTZ metric can be regarded as a special instance of them. In order to check the recent proposed universal relations between diffusivity and the butterfly velocity, we first compute the diffusion constants of the standard charged BTZ black holes and then extend our calculation to arbitrary dimension d, exponents z and θ. Remarkably, the case d = θ and z = 2 is a very special in that the charge diffusion D is a constant and the energy diffusion D might be ill-defined, but v τ diverges. We construct a hierarchy of integrable systems whose Poisson structure corresponds to the BMS algebra, and then discuss its description in terms of the Riemannian geometry of locally flat spacetimes in three dimensions. The analysis is performed in terms of two-dimensional gauge fields for $$ isl\left(2,\mathrm{\mathbb{R}}\right) $$, being isomorphic to the Poincaré algebra in 3D. Although the algebra is not semisimple, the formulation can still be carried out à la Drinfeld-Sokolov because it admits a nondegenerate invariant bilinear metric. The hierarchy turns out to be bi-Hamiltonian, labeled by a nonnegative integer k, and defined through a suitable generalization of the Gelfand-Dikii polynomials. The symmetries of the hierarchy are explicitly found. For k ≥ 1, the corresponding conserved charges span an infinite-dimensional Abelian algebra without central extensions, so that they are in involution; while in the case of k = 0, they generate the BMS algebra. In the special case of k = 1, by virtue of a suitable field redefinition and time scaling, the field equations are shown to be equivalent to the ones of a specific type of the Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV systems. For k ≥ 1, the hierarchy also includes the so-called perturbed KdV equations as a particular case. A wide class of analytic solutions is also explicitly constructed for a generic value of k. Remarkably, the dynamics can be fully geometrized so as to describe the evolution of spacelike surfaces embedded in locally flat spacetimes. Indeed, General Relativity in 3D can be endowed with a suitable set of boundary conditions, so that the Einstein equations precisely reduce to the ones of the hierarchy aforementioned. The symmetries of the integrable systems then arise as diffeomorphisms that preserve the asymptotic form of the spacetime metric, and therefore, they become Noetherian. The nonsingular bounce models usually suffer from the ghost or gradient instabilities, as has been proved recently. In this paper, we propose a covariant effective theory for stable nonsingular bounce, which has the quadratic order of the second order derivative of the field ϕ but the background set only by P ( ϕ, X). We develop an effective field theory for dissipative fluids which governs the dynamics of long-lived gapless modes associated with conserved quantities. The resulting theory gives a path integral formulation of fluctuating hydrodynamics which systematically incorporates nonlinear interactions of noises. The dynamical variables are mappings between a 'fluid spacetime' and the physical spacetime and an essential aspect of our formulation is to identify the appropriate symmetries in the fluid spacetime. The theory applies to nonlinear disturbances around a general density matrix. For a thermal density matrix, we require an additional Z symmetry, to which we refer as the local KMS condition. This leads to the standard constraints of hydrodynamics, as well as a nonlinear generalization of the Onsager relations. It also leads to an emergent supersymmetry in the classical statistical regime, and a higher derivative deformation of supersymmetry in the full quantum regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The asymptotically flat structure of $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(2,0\right) $$ supergravity in three spacetime dimensions is explored. The asymptotic symmetries are found to be spanned by an extension of the super-BMS algebra, endowed with two independent affine û(1) currents of electric and magnetic type. These currents are associated to U(1) fields being even and odd under parity, respectively. Remarkably, although the U(1) fields do not generate a backreaction on the metric, they provide nontrivial Sugawara-like contributions to the BMS generators, and hence to the energy and the angular momentum. Consequently, the entropy of flat cosmological spacetimes endowed with U(1) fields acquires a nontrivial dependence on the zero modes of the û(1) charges. If the spin structure is odd, the ground state corresponds to Minkowski spacetime, and although the anticommutator of the canonical supercharges is linear in the energy and in the electric-like û(1) charge, the energy becomes bounded from below by the energy of the ground state shifted by the square of the electric-like û(1) charge. If the spin structure is even, the same bound for the energy generically holds, unless the absolute value of the electric-like charge is less than minus the mass of Minkowski spacetime in vacuum, so that the energy has to be nonnegative. The explicit form of the global and asymptotic Killing spinors is found for a wide class of configurations that fulfills our boundary conditions, and they exist precisely when the corresponding bounds are saturated. It is also shown that the spectra with periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions for the fermionic fields are related by spectral flow, in a similar way as it occurs for the $$ \mathcal{N}=2 $$ super-Virasoro algebra. We construct solutions to the Einstein equations for asymptotically locally Anti-de Sitter spacetimes with four, five, and six dimensional Reissner-Nordström boundary metrics. These spacetimes are gravitational duals to 'jammed' CFTs on those backgrounds at infinite N and strong coupling. For these spacetimes, we calculate the boundary stress tensor as well as compute entanglement entropies for ball shaped regions as functions of the boundary black hole temperature T . From this, we see how the CFT prevents heat flow from the black hole to the vacuum at spatial infinity. We also compute entanglement entropies for a three dimensional boundary black hole using the AdS C-metric. We compare our results to previous work done in similar spacetimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We revisit the 1/2-BPS D-branes on the AdS×S background. Based only on the classification of 1/2-BPS D-branes obtained by the covariant open string description, we consider various purely static configurations of D-branes without any worldvolume flux on the AdS×S background. Under the covariant κ symmetry fixing condition, we investigate which part the spacetime supersymmetries is preserved on the D-brane worldvolume and obtain the associated worldvolume supersymmetry transformation rules to leading order in the worldvolume fluctuating fields. It is shown that, for purely static configurations without any worldvolume flux, only the AdS type D-branes, in which the AdS radial direction is one of worldvolume coordinates, are 1/2-BPS. The geometry of twisted null geodesic congruences in gravitational plane wave spacetimes is explored, with special focus on homogeneous plane waves. The rôle of twist in the relation of the Rosen coordinates adapted to a null congruence with the fundamental Brinkmann coordinates is explained and a generalised form of the Rosen metric describing a gravitational plane wave is derived. The Killing vectors and isometry algebra of homogeneous plane waves (HPWs) are described in both Brinkmann and twisted Rosen form and used to demonstrate the coset space structure of HPWs. The van Vleck-Morette determinant for twisted congruences is evaluated in both Brinkmann and Rosen descriptions. The twisted null congruences of the Ozsváth-Schücking, 'anti-Mach' plane wave are investigated in detail. These developments provide the necessary geometric toolkit for future investigations of the rôle of twist in loop effects in quantum field theory in curved spacetime, where gravitational plane waves arise generically as Penrose limits; in string theory, where they are important as string backgrounds; and potentially in the detection of gravitational waves in astronomy. The holographic complexity is UV divergent. As a finite complexity, we propose a 'regularized complexity' by employing a similar method to the holographic renor-malization. We add codimension-two boundary counterterms which do not contain any boundary stress tensor information. It means that we subtract only non-dynamic back-ground and all the dynamic information of holographic complexity is contained in the regularized part. After showing the general counterterms for both CA and CV conjectures in holographic spacetime dimension 5 and less, we give concrete examples: the BTZ black holes and the four and five dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black holes. We propose how to obtain the counterterms in higher spacetime dimensions and show explicit formulas only for some special cases with enough symmetries. We show that, in all metric theories of gravity with a general covariant action, gravity couples to the gravitational energy-momentum tensor in the same way it couples to the matter energy-momentum tensor order by order in the weak field approximation around flat spacetime. We present a formula for the information metric on ℝ × S for a scalar primary operator of integral dimension $$ \Delta\ \left(>\frac{d+1}{2}\right) $$ . This formula is checked for various space-time dimensions d and Δ in the field theory side. We check the formula in the gravity side using the holographic setup. We clarify the regularization and renormalization involved in these computations. We also show that the quantum information metric of an exactly marginal operator agrees with the leading order of the interface free energy of the conformal Janus on Euclidean S , which is checked for d = 2 , 3. We consider two-dimensional chiral, first-order conformal field theories governing maps from the Riemann sphere to the projective light cone inside Minkowski space - the natural setting for describing conformal field theories in two fewer dimensions. These theories have a SL(2) algebra of local bosonic constraints which can be supplemented by additional fermionic constraints depending on the matter content of the theory. By computing the BRST charge associated with gauge fixing these constraints, we find anomalies which vanish for specific target space dimensions. These critical dimensions coincide precisely with those for which (biadjoint) cubic scalar theory, gauge theory and gravity are classically conformally invariant. Furthermore, the BRST cohomology of each theory contains vertex operators for the full conformal multiplets of single field insertions in each of these space-time CFTs. In five-dimensional minimal supergravity, there are spherical black holes with nontrivial topology outside the horizon which have the same conserved charges at infinity as the BMPV solution. We show that some of these black holes have greater entropy than the BMPV solution. These spacetimes are all asymptotically flat, stationary, and supersymmetric. We also show that there is a limit in which the black hole shrinks to zero size and the solution becomes a nonsingular 'bubbling' geometry. Entanglement appears to be a fundamental building block of quantum gravity leading to new principles underlying the nature of quantum space-time. One such principle is the ER-EPR duality. While supported by our present intuition, a proof is far from obvious. In this article I present a first step towards such a proof, originating in what is known to algebraic topologists as the Mayer-Vietoris theorem. The main result of this work is the re-interpretation of the various morphisms arising when the Mayer-Vietoris theorem is used to assemble a torus-like topology from more basic subspaces on the torus in terms of quantum information theory resulting in a quantum entangler gate (Hadamard and c-NOT). We explicitly show how the field dependent 2-cocycle that arises in the current algebra of 4 dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes can be used as a central extension to turn the BMS4 Lie algebra, or more precisely, the BMS4 action Lie algebroid, into a genuine Lie algebroid with field dependent structure functions. Both a BRST formulation, where the extension appears as a ghost number 2 cocyle, and a formulation in terms of vertex operator algebras are introduced. Exotic compact objects, horizonless spacetimes with reflective properties, have intriguingly been suggested by some quantum-gravity models as alternatives to classical black-hole spacetimes. A remarkable feature of spinning horizonless compact objects with reflective boundary conditions is the existence of a discrete set of critical surface radii, { r ( ā; n)}, which can support spatially regular static ( marginally-stable) scalar field configurations (here ā≡ J/ M is the dimensionless angular momentum of the exotic compact object). Interestingly, the outermost critical radius r ≡ max{ r ( ā; n)} marks the boundary between stable and unstable exotic compact objects: spinning objects whose reflecting surfaces are situated in the region r > r ( ā) are stable, whereas spinning objects whose reflecting surfaces are situated in the region r < r ( ā) are superradiantly unstable to scalar perturbation modes. In the present paper we use analytical techniques in order to explore the physical properties of the critical (marginally-stable) spinning exotic compact objects. In particular, we derive a remarkably compact analytical formula for the discrete spectrum { r ( ā)} of critical radii which characterize the marginally-stable exotic compact objects. We study the class of vacuum (Ricci flat) six-dimensional spacetimes admitting a non-degenerate multiple Weyl aligned null direction ℓ, thus being of Weyl type II or more special. Subject to an additional assumption on the asymptotic fall-off of the Weyl tensor, we prove that these spacetimes can be completely classified in terms of the two eigenvalues of the (asymptotic) twist matrix of ℓ and of a discrete parameter U = ±1 /2 , 0. All solutions turn out to be Kerr-Schild spacetimes of type D and reduce to a family of 'generalized' Myers-Perry metrics (which include limits and analytic continuations of the original Myers-Perry black hole metric, such as certain NUT spacetimes). We investigate time-dependent spherically symmetric solutions of the four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-axion-dilaton system, with the dilaton coupling that occurs in low-energy effective heterotic string theory. A class of dilaton-electrovacuum radiating solutions with a trivial axion, previously found by Güven and Yörük, is re-derived in a simpler manner and its causal structure is clarified. It is shown that such dynamical spacetimes featuring apparent horizons do not possess a regular light-like past null infinity or future null infinity, depending on whether they are radiating or accreting. These solutions are then extended in two ways. First we consider a Vaidya-like generalisation, which introduces a null dust source. Such spacetimes are used to test the status of cosmic censorship in the context of low-energy string theory. We prove that - within this family of solutions - regular black holes cannot evolve into naked singularities by accreting null dust, unless standard energy conditions are violated. Secondly, we employ S-duality to derive new time-dependent dyon solutions with a nontrivial axion turned on. Although they share the same causal structure as their Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton counterparts, these solutions possess both electric and magnetic charges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We determine the generating functions of 1/4 BPS dyons in a class of 4d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 string vacua arising as CHL orbifolds of K3 × T , a classification of which has been recently completed. We show that all such generating functions obey some simple physical consistency conditions that are very often sufficient to fix them uniquely. The main constraint we impose is the absence of unphysical walls of marginal stability: discontinuities of 1/4 BPS degeneracies can only occur when 1/4 BPS dyons decay into pairs of 1/2 BPS states. Formally, these generating functions in spacetime can be described as multiplicative lifts of certain supersymmetric indices (twining genera) on the worldsheet of the corresponding nonlinear sigma model on K3. As a consequence, our procedure also leads to an explicit derivation of almost all of these twining genera. We generalise Starobinsky's model of inflation to space-times with D > 4 dimensions, where D − 4 dimensions are compactified on a suitable manifold. The D-dimensional action features Einstein-Hilbert gravity, a higher-order curvature term, a cosmological constant, and potential contributions from fluxes in the compact dimensions. The existence of a stable flat direction in the four-dimensional EFT implies that the power of space-time curvature, n, and the rank of the compact space fluxes, p, are constrained via n = p = D/2. Whenever these constraints are satisfied, a consistent single-field inflation model can be built into this setup, where the inflaton field is the same as in the four-dimensional Starobinsky model. We derive the characters of all unitary irreducible representations of the ( d+1)-dimensional de Sitter spacetime isometry algebra $$ \mathfrak{so}\left(1,\kern0.5em d+1\right) $$ , and propose a dictionary between those representations and massive or (partially) massless fields on de Sitter spacetime. We propose a way of taking the flat limit of representations in (anti-) de Sitter spaces in terms of these characters, and conjecture the spectrum resulting from taking the flat limit of mixed-symmetry fields in de Sitter spacetime. Recently we have shown [1] how to formulate a thermodynamic first law for a single (charged) accelerated black hole in AdS space by fixing the conical deficit angles present in the spacetime. Here we show how to generalise this result, formulating thermodynamics for black holes with varying conical deficits. We derive a new potential for the varying tension defects: the thermodynamic length, both for accelerating and static black holes. We discuss possible physical processes in which the tension of a string ending on a black hole might vary, and also map out the thermodynamic phase space of accelerating black holes and explore their critical phenomena. We employ the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism to study the renormalization group flow of gravity minimally coupled to an arbitrary number of scalar, vector, and Dirac fields. The decomposition of the gravitational degrees of freedom into a lapse function, shift vector, and spatial metric equips spacetime with a preferred (Euclidean) 'time'- direction. In this work, we provide a detailed derivation of the renormalization group flow of Newton's constant and the cosmological constant on a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. Adding matter fields, it is shown that their contribution to the flow is the same as in the covariant formulation and can be captured by two parameters d d . We classify the resulting fixed point structure as a function of these parameters finding that the existence of non-Gaussian renormalization group fixed points is rather generic. In particular the matter content of the standard model and its most common extensions gives rise to one non-Gaussian fixed point with real critical exponents suitable for Asymptotic Safety. We investigate the origins and implications of the duality between topological insulators and topological superconductors in three and four spacetime dimensions. In the latter, the duality transformation can be made at the level of the path integral in the standard way, while in three dimensions, it takes the form of 'self-duality in odd dimensions'. In this sense, it is closely related to the particle-vortex duality of planar systems. In particular, we use this to elaborate on Son's conjecture that a three dimensional Dirac fermion that can be thought of as the surface mode of a four dimensional topological insulator is dual to a composite fermion. It is shown that black hole spacetimes in classical Einstein gravity are characterized by, in addition to their ADM mass M, momentum $$ \overrightarrow{P} $$ , angular momentum $$ \overrightarrow{J} $$ and boost charge $$ \overrightarrow{K} $$ , an infinite head of supertranslation hair. The distinct black holes are distinguished by classical superrotation charges measured at infinity. Solutions with super-translation hair are diffeomorphic to the Schwarzschild spacetime, but the diffeomorphisms are part of the BMS subgroup and act nontrivially on the physical phase space. It is shown that a black hole can be supertranslated by throwing in an asymmetric shock wave. A leading-order Bondi-gauge expression is derived for the linearized horizon supertranslation charge and shown to generate, via the Dirac bracket, supertranslations on the linearized phase space of gravitational excitations of the horizon.
