Search

A search for long-lived particles decaying into muon pairs is performed using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb−1. The data sets used in this search were collected with a dedicated dimuon trigger stream with low transverse momentum thresholds, recorded at high rate by retaining a reduced amount of information, in order to explore otherwise inaccessible phase space at low dimuon mass and nonzero displacement from the primary interaction vertex. No significant excess of events beyond the standard model expectation is found. Upper limits on branching fractions at 95% confidence level are set on a wide range of mass and lifetime hypotheses in beyond the standard model frameworks with the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of long-lived dark photons, or with a long-lived scalar resonance arising from a decay of a b hadron. The limits are the most stringent to date for substantial regions of the parameter space. The Higgs doublet can mediate a long-range interaction between multi-TeV particles coupled to the Weak interactions of the Standard Model, while its emission can lead to very rapid bound-state formation processes and bound-to-bound transitions. Using the rates calculated in a companion paper, here we compute the thermal decoupling of multi-TeV WIMP dark matter coupled to the Higgs, and show that the formation of metastable dark matter bound states via Higgs-doublet emission and their decay decrease the relic density very significantly. This in turn implies that WIMP dark matter may be much heavier than previously anticipated, or conversely that for a given mass, the dark matter couplings to the Higgs may be much lower than previously predicted, thereby altering the dark matter phenomenology. While we focus on a minimal singlet-doublet model in the coannihilation regime, our calculations can be extended to larger multiplets where the effects under consideration are expected to be even more significant. A search for dark matter particles is performed using events with a pair of W bosons and large missing transverse momentum. Candidate events are selected by requiring one or two leptons (ℓ = electrons or muons). The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. No significant excess over the expected standard model background is observed in the ℓνqq and 2ℓ2ν final states of the W+W− boson pair. Limits are set on dark matter production in the context of a simplified dark Higgs model, with a dark Higgs boson mass above the W+W− mass threshold. The dark matter phase space is probed in the mass range 100–300 GeV, extending the scope of previous searches. Current exclusion limits are improved in the range of dark Higgs masses from 160 to 250 GeV, for a dark matter mass of 200 GeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electron positron collisions are a very promising environment to search for new physics, and in particular for dark sector related observables. The most challenging experimental problem in detecting dark sector candidates is the very high associated Standard Model background. For this reason it is important to identify observables that are, at the same time, minimally suppressed in the dark sector and highly suppressed in the Standard Model. One example is the e+e− → 3(e+e−) process that can be mediated either by the production and subsequent decay of dark Higgs (h′), e+e− → A′h′ → 6e [1] or produced by the Standards Model process e+e− → 3(e+e−). In the following letter we study the relative contribution to observed e+e− → 3(e+e−) total cross section, coming from the h′ mediated and from the Standard Model processes in the contest of fixed target and low energy collider experiments, with particular attention to the PADME experiment at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. We explore a simple extension to the Standard Model containing two gauge singlets: a Dirac fermion and a real pseudoscalar. In some regions of the parameter space both singlets are stable without the necessity of additional symmetries, then becoming a possible two-component dark matter model. We study the relic abundance production via freeze-out, with the latter determined by annihilations, conversions and semi-annihilations. Experimental constraints from invisible Higgs decay, dark matter relic abundance and direct/indirect detection are studied. The Higgs invisible decay width may soon become a powerful tool to probe extensions of the Standard Model with dark matter candidates at the Large Hadron Collider. In this work, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak corrections to the 125 GeV Higgs decay width into two dark matter particles. The model is the next-to-minimal 2-Higgs-doublet model (N2HDM) in the dark doublet phase, that is, only one doublet and the singlet acquire vacuum expectation values. We show that the present measurement of the Higgs invisible branching ratio, BR(H → invisible < 0.11), does not lead to constraints on the parameter space of the model at leading order. This is due to the very precise measurements of the Higgs couplings but could change in the near future. Furthermore, if NLO corrections are required not to be unphysically large, no limits on the parameter space can be extracted from the NLO results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, we have witnessed two hints of physics beyond the standard model: a 3.3σ local excess ( M A 0 = 52 GeV) in the search for H0 → A0A0 → b b ¯ μ+μ− and a 4.2σ deviation from the SM prediction in the (g − 2)μ measurement. The first excess was found by the ATLAS collaboration using 139 fb−1 data at s = 13 TeV. The second deviation is a combination of the results from the Brookhaven E821 and the recently reported Fermilab E989 experiment. We attempt to explain these deviations in terms of a renormalizable simplified dark matter model. Inspired by the null signal result from dark matter (DM) direct detection, we interpret the possible new particle, A0, as a pseudoscalar mediator connecting DM and the standard model. We explore relativistic freeze-in production of scalar dark matter in gauged B − L model, where we focus on the production of dark matter from the decay and annihilation of Standard Model (SM) and B − L Higgs bosons. We consider the Bose-Einstein (BE) and Fermi-Dirac (FD) statistics, along with the thermal mass correction of the SM Higgs boson in our analysis. We show that in addition to the SM Higgs boson, the annihilation and decay of the B − L scalar can also contribute substantially to the dark matter relic density. Potential effects of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) and thermal mass correction in BE framework enhance the dark matter relic substantially as it freezes-in near EWSB temperature via scalar annihilation. However, such effects are not so prominent when the dark matter freezes-in at a later epoch than EWSB, dominantly by decay of scalars. Inelastic dark matter is an interesting scenario for light thermal dark matter which is fully consistent with all cosmological probes as well as direct and indirect dark matter detection. The required mass splitting between dark matter χ1 and its heavier twin χ2 is naturally induced by a dark Higgs field which also provides a simple mechanism to give mass to the dark photon A′ present in the setup. The corresponding dark Higgs boson h′ is naturally the lightest dark sector state and therefore decays into Standard Model particles via Higgs mixing. In this work we study signatures with displaced vertices and missing momentum at Belle II, arising from dark Higgs particles produced in association with dark matter. We find that Belle II can be very sensitive to this scenario, in particular if a displaced vertex trigger is available in the near future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We suggest a minimal model for GeV-scale Majorana Dark Matter (DM) coupled to the standard model lepton sector via a charged scalar singlet. We show that there is an anti-correlation between the spin-independent DM-Nucleus scattering cross section (σSI) and the DM relic density for parameters values allowed by various theoretical and experimental constraints. Moreover, we find that even when DM couplings are of order unity, σSI is below the current experimental bound but above the neutrino floor. Furthermore, we show that the considered model can be probed at high energy lepton colliders using e.g. the mono-Higgs production and same-sign charged Higgs pair production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct models with minimal field content that can simultaneously explain the muon g - 2 anomaly and give the correct dark matter relic abundance. These models fall into two general classes, whether or not the new fields couple to the Higgs. For the general structure of models without new Higgs couplings, we provide analytical expressions that only depend on the SU(2)L representation. These results allow to demonstrate that only few models in this class can simultaneously explain (g - 2)μ and account for the relic abundance. The experimental constraints and perturbativity considerations exclude all such models, apart from a few fine-tuned regions in the parameter space, with new states in the few 100 GeV range. In the models with new Higgs couplings, the new states can be parametrically heavier by a factor √1=yμ, with yμ the muon Yukawa coupling, resulting in masses for the new states in the TeV regime. A real singlet scalar, connected to the Standard Model sector through a portal with the Higgs boson, is one of the simplest and most popular models for dark matter (DM). However, the experimental advances in direct and indirect DM searches, together with the latest results from the LHC, have ruled out vast areas of the parameter space of this scenario; and are expected to probe it completely within the next years, ruling it out if no signal is found. Motivated by the simplicity of this model, in this article we address a minimal, renormalizable extension that could evade detection, consisting of the addition of an extra real singlet scalar field in the dark sector. We analyze the physical constraints on the model and show that the new annihilation and/or coannihilation channels involving the extra singlet allow to reproduce the correct DM relic abundance while avoiding the bounds from direct and indirect searches for any DM mass above 50 GeV. We also show that, in some interesting regions of the parameter space, the extra particle can be integrated-out, leaving a 'clever' effective theory (just involving the DM particle and the Higgs), that essentially reproduces the results. Freeze-in dark matter (DM) mediated by a light (≪ keV) weakly-coupled dark-photon is an important benchmark for the emerging low-mass direct detection program. Since this is one of the only predictive, detectable freeze-in models, we investigate how robustly such testability extends to other scenarios. For concreteness, we perform a detailed study of models in which DM couples to a light scalar mediator and acquires a freeze-in abundance through Higgs-mediator mixing. Unlike dark-photons, whose thermal properties weaken stellar cooling bounds, the scalar coupling to Standard Model (SM) particles is subject to strong astrophysical constraints, which severely limit the fraction of DM that can be produced via freeze-in. While it seems naively possible to compensate for this reduction by increasing the mediator-DM coupling, sufficiently large values eventually thermalize the dark sector with itself and yield efficient DM annihilation to mediators, which depletes the freeze-in population; only a small window of DM candidate masses near the ∼ GeV scale can accommodate the total observed abundance. Since many qualitatively similar issues arise for other light mediators, we find it generically difficult to realize a viable freeze-in scenario in which production arises only from renormalizable interactions with SM particles. We analyse new signals of Dark Matter (DM) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) where only one doublet acquires a Vacuum Expectation Value (VEV), preserving a parity Z2. The other two doublets are inert and do not develop a VEV, leading to a dark scalar sector controlled by Z2, with the lightest CP-even dark scalar H1 being the DM candidate. This leads to the loop induced decay of the next-to-lightest scalar, H2→H1ff¯f=u,d,c,s,b,e,μ,τ, mediated by both dark CP-odd and charged scalars. This is a smoking-gun signal of the 3HDM since it is not allowed in the 2HDM with one inert doublet and is expected to be important when H2 and H1 are close in mass. In practice, this signature can be observed in the cascade decay of the SM-like Higgs boson, h→H1H2→H1H1ff¯ into two DM particles and di-leptons/di-jets, where h is produced from either gluon-gluon Fusion (ggF) or Vector Boson Fusion (VBF). However, this signal competes with the tree-level channel qq¯→H1H1Z∗→H1H1ff¯. We devise some benchmarks, compliant with collider, DM and cosmological data, for which the interplay between these modes is discussed. In particular, we show that the resulting detector signature, , with invariant mass of ff¯ much smaller than mZ, can potentially be extracted already during Run 2 and 3. For example, the H2 → H1γ* and γ* → e+e− case will give a spectacular QED mono-shower signal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work we consider a minimal version of the scotogenic model capable of accounting for an electron electric dipole moment within experimental sensitivity reach in addition to providing a dark matter candidate and radiatively generating neutrino masses. The Standard Model is minimally extended by two sterile fermions and one inert scalar doublet, both having odd parity, while the Standard Model particles have an even parity, imposed by a ℤ2 symmetry. The neutrino Yukawa couplings provide additional sources of CP violation, and thus a possible impact on electric dipole moments of charged leptons. This model provides two possible dark matter candidates (one bosonic and one fermionic) and our results show that, independently of the ordering of the generated light neutrino spectrum, one can have sizeable electron electric dipole moment within ACME sensitivity reach in the case of fermionic dark matter candidate.
