Microplastic particles are persistent micropollutants that provide a substrate for the growth of bacterial biofilms, posing a threat to the environment. This study explores the changes in commercially available food containers made of conventional (polypropylene PP, polyethylene terephthalate PET), innovative biodegradable (Mater-Bi) and natural (wood and cellulose) materials, when introduced in the surface waters of Lake Maggiore for 43 days. Spectral changes revealed by FT-IR spectroscopy in PET and Mater-Bi, and changes in thermal properties of all human-made material tested indicated a degradation process occurred during environmental exposure. Despite similar bacterial richness, biofilms on PET, PP, and Mater-Bi differed from natural material biofilms and the planktonic community. Human-made material communities showed a higher proportion of potential pathogens, with PET and PP also exhibiting increased abundances of antibiotic resistance genes. Overall, these findings stress the need for dedicated strategies to curb the spread of human-made polymers in freshwaters, including innovative materials that, due to their biodegradable properties, might be perceived less hazardous for the environment. More single-use plastics are accumulating in the environment, and likewise biodegradable plastics (BPs), which are being vigorously promoted, cannot escape the fate. Currently, studies on the actual degradation of BPs in open-air and freshwaters are underrepresented despite they are potentially headmost leakage and contamination sites for disposable BPs. Herein, we compared the degradation behavior of six BP materials and non-degradable polypropylene (PP) plastics over a 1-year in situ suspension in the high-humidity air, a eutrophic river, and an oligotrophic lake. Moreover, a 3-months laboratory incubation was performed to detect the release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from BPs. In both air and freshwaters, poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) degraded significantly while PP and polylactic acid (PLA) showed no signs of degradation. The average degradation rates of three poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT)-based films varied: 100% in river, 55% in lake, and 10% in air. In addition to PLA, surface chemical groups, hydrophilicity, and thermal stability of BPs changed, and microplastics were found on their surfaces. Correspondingly, BPs with faster degradation rates released relatively higher amounts of DOC. Environmental microbial and chemical characteristics may contribute to differences in BP degradation besides polymer specificity. Nanoplastics are emerging environmental contaminants, but their presence in environmental and potable water remains largely understudied due to the absence of quantitative analytical methods. In this study, we developed and validated a pretreatment method that combines hydrogen peroxide digestion and Amicon® Stirred Cell ultrafiltration (at 100 kDa, approximately 10 nm) with subsequent detection by pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Pyr-GC/MS). This method allows for the simultaneous identification and quantification of nine selected nanoplastic types, including poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polyethylene (PE), polycarbonate (PC), polypropylene (PP), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), polyvinylchloride (PVC), nylon 6, and nylon 66, in environmental and potable water samples based on polymer-specific mass concentration. Limits of quantification ranged from 0.01 to 0.44 µg/L, demonstrating the method's ability to quantitatively detect nanoplastics in environmental and potable water samples. Most of the selected nanoplastics were detected at concentrations of between 0.04 and 1.17 µg/L, except for PC, which was consistently below the limit of detection (<0.44 µg/L). The prevalent polymer components in the samples were PE (0.10 – 1.17 µg/L), PET (0.06 – 0.91 µg/L), PP (0.04 – 0.79 µg/L), and PS (0.06 – 0.53 µg/L) nanoplastics. The presented analytical method offers an accurate means to identify, quantify, and monitor nanoplastics in complex environmental and potable water samples. The concerns on the carriers of microplastics (MPs) on co-existing pollutants in aquatic environments are sharply rising in recent years. However, little is known about their interactions on the colonization of microbiota, especially for the spread of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influences on the propagation of ARGs in sediments by the co-exposure of different MPs and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results showed that the presence of MPs significantly enhanced the contents of total organic carbon, while having no effects on the removal of SMX in sediments. Exposure to SMX and MPs obviously activated the microbial carbon utilization capacities based on the BIOLOG method. The propagation of ARGs in sediments was activated by SMX, which was further promoted by the presence of polylactic acid (PLA) MPs, but significantly lowered by the co-exposed polyethylene (PE) MPs. This apparent difference may be attributed to the distinct influence on the antibiotic efflux pumps of two MPs. Moreover, the propagation of ARGs may be also dominated by microbial carbon metabolism in sediments, especially through regulating the carbon sources of carboxylic acids, carbohydrates, and amino acids. The idea that it is a risk to promote biodegradable mulch films on a large scale is becoming established at academic level based on a series of articles similar in approach and conclusions. However, a critical analysis shows that the results do not justify the alarmist tones. The negative effects of hand-cut pieces of virgin material added in pots at concentrations up to 714 times the application doses are ascribed to the "accumulation" and "contamination" of "residues" and "debris" of biodegradable plastics. Yet, no accumulation and no contamination of biodegradable microplastics has actually been shown. No Predicted Environmental Concentration was established, thus the use of the term risk is inappropriate. The hypothesis of transient phytotoxicity of organic matter under decomposition i.e., an artificial outcome of the experimental scheme used, was not considered. A scrupulous approach to terminology is very important for the quality of communication and for the development of innovations. Scientific communication is a delicate process in which and to avoid hyperbole, there must be strict logical and lexical consistency between results and conclusions. Guidelines on the communication of the results of studies on biodegradable mulch must be developed to avoid the spread of unjustified concerns. Biodegradable plastics (BPs) are more prone to generate harmful microplastics (MPs) in a short time, which have always been ignored. Oxygenated functional group formation is considered to be a key indicator for assessing microplastic formation, while it is difficult to characterize at a very early stage. The micromechanical properties of the aging plastic during the formation of the MPs are highly influenced by the evolution of oxygen-containing functional groups, however, their relationship has rarely been revealed. Herein, we compared changes in the physicochemical properties of BPs and non-degradable plastic bags during aging in artificial seawater, soil, and air. The results showed that the oxidation of plastics in the air was the most significant, with the most prominent oxidation in BPs. The accumulation of carbonyl groups leads to a significant increase in the micromechanical properties and surface brittleness of the plastic, further exacerbating the formation of MPs. It was also verified by the FTIR, 2D-COS, AFM, and Raman spectroscopy analyses. Furthermore, the increased adhesion and roughness caused by oxygen-containing functional groups suggest that the environmental risks of BPs cannot be ignored. Our findings suggest that the testing of micromechanical properties can predicate the formation of the MPs at an early stage. Microplastics are recognized as an emerging critical issue for the environment. Here an innovative chemical approach for the treatment of microplastics is proposed, based on an oxidative process that does not require any direct energy source (irradiation or heat). Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) was selected as target commodity polymer, due to its widespread use, chemical inertness and inefficient recycling. This route is based on a hybrid material coupling titanium oxide with a bio-waste, rosin, mainly constituted by abietic acid, through a simple sol-gel synthesis procedure. The ligand-to-metal charge transfer complexes formed between rosin and Ti4+ allow the generation of reactive oxygen species without UV irradiation for its activation. In agreement with theorical calculations, superoxide radical ions are stabilized at ambient conditions on the surface of the hybrid TiO 2. Consequently, an impressive degradation of LLDPE is observed after 1 month exposure in a batch configuration under indirect daylight, as evidenced by the products revealed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and by chemical and structural modifications of the polymer surface. In a context of waste exploitation, this innovative and sustainable approach represents a promising cost-effective strategy for the oxidative degradation of microplastics, without producing any toxic by-products. The presence of microplastics (MPs) in large quantities in the aqueous environment significantly affects the degradation process of water pollution. Still, the interaction between MPs and pollutants during photocatalytic degradation has not been studied. Here, a soluble BiOCl-OH semiconductor-organic framework (BOCH-SOF) was prepared from xylitol, and the polystyrene (PS) MPs' effect on the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) was investigated. It was found that the appropriate number of PS can promote TC degradation and also change degradation products and pathways. At the same time, the presence of TC can effectively enhance PS aging and reduce the molecular weight of PS. This indicates that BOCH-SOF produces a synergistic effect in treating the combined pollution of TC and PS. Through free radical analysis and density functional theory calculations, it was proposed that PS and TC can complement each other. A certain concentration and size of PS can promote the conversion of Bi(III) to Bi and enhance charge separation and radical generation; the TC can change the interfacial charge distribution and free radical depletion, extend the light absorption in the system, and the PS and TC work together to ultimately achieve the synergistic degradation of the TC and the aging PS. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the mechanism of the effect of MPs on the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics, which is significant in controlling the combined pollution of MPs and associated pollutants in the water environment. The widespread use of plastic materials, owing to their several advantageous properties, has resulted in a considerable increase in plastic consumption. Consequently, the production of primary and secondary microplastics has also increased. To identify, categorize, and quantify microplastics, several analytical methods, such as thermal analysis and spectroscopic methods, have been developed. They generally offer little insight into the size and shape of microplastics, require time-consuming sample preparation and classification, and are susceptible to background interference. Herein, we created a macroscale hyperspectral Raman method to quickly quantify and characterize large volumes of plastics. Using this approach, we successfully obtained Raman spectra of five different types of microplastics scattered over an area of 12.4 mm × 12.4 mm within just 550 s and perfectly classified these microplastics using a machine learning method. Additionally, we demonstrated that our system is effective for obtaining Raman spectra, even when the microplastics are suspended in aquatic environments or bound to metal-mesh nets. These results highlight the considerable potential of our proposed method for real-world applications. Plastic pollution, particularly microplastics, poses a significant environmental challenge. This study aimed to address the urgent need for sustainable solutions to manage plastic waste. The degradation of polyethylene microplastics (PEMPs) and nylon 6,6 microplastics (NMPs) were investigated using bacterial culture isolates, isolated from a municipal landfill site and identified through 16 S rDNA as well as metagenomics techniques.The study demonstrated for the first time along with degradation mechanism. The isolates identified as Achromobacter xylosoxidans and mixed culture species in dominance of Pulmonis sp. were used to degrade PEMPs and NMPs. Achromobacter xylosoxidans reduced microplastic's dry weight by 26.7% (PEMPs) and 21.3% (NMPs) in 40 days, while the mixed culture achieved weight reductions of 19.3% (PEMPs) and 20% (NMPs). The release of enzymes, laccase and peroxidases revealed C-C bond cleavage and reduced polymer chain length. The thermal studies (TGA and DSC) revealed changes in the thermal stability and transition characteristics of microplastics. The structural alterations on PEMPs and NMPs were recorded by FTIR analysis. Byproducts such as alkanes, esters, aromatic compounds and carboxylic acids released were identified by GC-MS. These results suggest the effectiveness of bacterial isolates in degrading PEMPs and NMPs, with potential for sustainable plastic waste management solutions. Over recent years, biodegradable polymers have been proposed to reduce environmental impacts of plastics for specific applications. The production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) by using diverse carbon sources provides further benefits for the sustainable development of biodegradable plastics. Here, we present the first study evaluating the impact of physical, chemical and biological factors driving the biodegradability of various tailor-made PHAs in the marine environment. Our multidisciplinary approach demonstrated that the chemical structure of the polymer (i.e. the side chain size for short- vs. medium-chain PHA) which was intrinsically correlated to the physico-chemical properties, together with the specificity of the biofilm growing on plastic films (i.e., the associated 'plastisphere') were the main drivers of the PHA biodegradation in the marine environment. Microplastic (MP) pollution has become a major global concern due to the widespread use and discharge of plastics into the environment. However, very few studies have assessed the potential variations in the toxicity of MPs according to their shape and size. Therefore, our study sought to identify the biotoxic effects of spherical, fiber-shaped, and fragment-shaped polyethylene terephthalate MPs of different sizes at different concentrations on the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. The survival rate after exposure to small-sized MPs was lower than that observed for the larger type MPs. Bioaccumulation of MPs was different depending on the exposure periods and MP shapes. Interestingly, the fiber-shaped MPs underwent morphological modifications in the mussel body upon uptake. MP exposure also increased the global DNA methylation levels (i.e., an epigenetic signature), expression of the microbiota immunity-related toll-like receptor gene, and alteration of the gut microbial composition in the mussel. These findings indicated that MPs of different shapes and sizes at different concentrations can alter the bioaccumulation sensitivity of mussels according to the exposure periods, and the balance of gut immunity and epigenetic process. Furthermore, our results demonstrated that MPs of different shapes, particularly fiber types, can undergo morphological modification in mussel tissues, thus posing a hazardous threat. To address the challenging issues of waste plastic pollution and petroleum shortage, we report herein a pulse pressurized catalytic pyrolysis process where polyethylene is continuously converted into aromatics using HZSM-5 catalyst incorporated with hydrated SiO 2. Pressurization improves the activity of single-pulse pyrolysis of polyethylene by 14.42%. In contrast to the linear decrease of BTEXS relative yield with a K value of − 0.23 under non-pressurized conditions, pressurization results in a notable stability in the latter stage, characterized by a K value of only − 0.063. Comprehensive catalyst characterization demonstrates that pressurization promotes the release of water from hydrated SiO 2 , enabling HZSM-5 to effectively undergo dealumination and obtain suitable acidity and pore structure, and ultimately enhancing the resistance to carbon deposition. In summary, pressurization improves both pyrolysis activity and catalysis stability, offering a promising strategy for the high-value utilization of waste plastics. Environmental microplastics (MPs) constitute various sizes, polymers, and shape components. In estuaries, such differences are related to the reliability of assessing the seaward fate of MPs, aggregation hotspots, and ecological risks. This study sets the MP particle mass gradient using the shape factor and size probability density function to categorically estimate the MP load in the surface layer of the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE), which is the largest contributor of plastics to the sea. During the high plastic input period in July, the optimized estimated MP load through the surface layer of the YRE was 9766 kg/month, which was overestimated by 821 kg/month based on the empirical average particle mass. While tracking MP transport classified by shape and polymer type, the resuspension of MPs that accumulate in the intertidal zone cannot be neglected. The average relative error of the simulation was as low as 19.6% after including the abovementioned factors. Finally, the simulation results of the sensitive regions were extracted to assess the new MP risk index, which considers shape, abundance, and polymer type. By introducing these essential tools, this study helps to understand the fate of riverine MPs entering estuaries, where valuable opportunities for removing MPs exist before they spread to the oceans. Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous pollutants that significantly threaten organisms and ecosystems. Constructed wetlands (CWs), a nature-based treatment technology, can effectively remove MPs from wastewater. However, the responses of CWs when exposed to MPs remain unclear. In this study, lab-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) were installed for receiving polystyrene (PS) MPs at concentrations of 100 μg/L and 1000 μg/L. The results showed that exposure to PS-MPs has no effects on COD and TP removal in VFCWs, but TN removal decreased by 3.69–5.37 %. Further investigation revealed that PS-MPs significantly impacted microbial communities and metabolic functions. The abundances of predominant nitrifiers (Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas) and denitrifiers (Nakamurella , Bradyrhizobium , and Bacillus) in VFCWs were significantly reduced, aligning with the responses of key enzymes. The presence of PS-MPs also decreased nitrogen removal by plant uptake, leading to decreased plant biomass and chlorophyll by 39.32–48.75 % and 5.92–32.19 %, respectively. Notably, > 90 % removal rates were observed for PS-MPs within VFCWs. In addition to PS-MPs interception by VFCWs substrate, the increase of released benzenes indicated that the PS-MPs biodegradation occurred. Such insights are vital for developing sustainable solutions to mitigate MPs' adverse effects on ecosystems. Microplastics (MPs) have attracted global concern and are at the forefront of current research on environmental pollution, whereas, little is known about the degradation of ingested MPs in the gastrointestinal environment and repetitive exposure-associated risk of egested MPs to organisms. The present study revealed that polyamide (PA) and polystyrene (PS) MPs exhibited remarkably differential biodegradations in the gastric and intestinal fluids of a model fish (Siniperca chuatsi). Significant disintegration of the skeleton structure, size reduction (from 27.62 to 9.17 µm), benzene ring scission, and subsequent biogenic corona coating and surface oxidation occurred during in vitro digestion, thus increasing the hydrophilicity and agglomeration of PS. Conversely, PA MPs exhibited high resistance to enzymolysis with slight surface erosions and protein adsorption. Relative to the pristine form, the bioaccumulation of digested PS elevated and the musculoskeletal deformity and mortality of juvenile zebrafish were obviously enhanced, but these changes were unobservable for PA. Lipopolysaccharide-triggered inflammation and apoptosis via Toll-like receptor signaling pathways and reduction of extracellular matrix secretions driven by oxidative stress contributed to the aggravated inhibitory effects of digested PS on larval development. These findings emphasize the necessity of concerning the biota digestion in MP risk assessments in natural waters. Because of the excellent properties, plastics have been widely used in the past decades and caused serious environmental issues. As an excellent substitute for conventional plastics, the biodegradable plastics have attracted increasing attention. However, biodegradable plastics may produce more micro/nanoplastics in the short time compared with conventional plastics, and cause more serious ecological risks. In this study, the short-term toxicity of nanoplastics released from biodegradable and conventional plastics on Streptomyces coelicolor M145 was investigated. After 30 days of degradation, the biodegradable microplastics, polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) released more secondary nanoplastics than conventional microplastics, polystyrene (PS). After exposure, PLA and PHA nanoplastics showed significant toxicity to M145. The survival rate of M145 cells was 16.1% after treatment with PLA nanoplastics for 7 days (PLA-7). The toxicity of PHA was lower than that of PLA. This might have been due to the agglomeration of PHA nanoplastics in the solution. Compared with the controls, the PS secondary nanoplastics showed no significant toxicity to M145. After the treatment, the production of antibiotics, actinorhodin (ACT) and undecylprodigiosin (RED), significantly increased. The yields of ACT and RED reached their maximum values after treatment with PLA-7, which were 4.2-fold and 2.1-fold higher than those of the controls, respectively. The addition of biodegradable nanoplastics significantly increased the expression of these key pathway-specific regulatory genes, leading to increased antibiotic production. This study provides toxicological insights into the impacts of conventional and biodegradable microplastics on S. coelicolor. The degradation of organic pollutants and the adsorption of organic pollutants onto microplastics (MPs) in the environment have recently been intensively studied, but the effects of biocurrents, which are widespread in various soil environments, on the environmental behavior of MPs and antibiotic pollutants have not been reported. In this study, it was found that polylactic acid (PLA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs accelerated the mineralization of humic substances in microbial electrochemical systems (MESs). After tetracycline (TC) was introduced into the MESs, the internal resistance of the soil MESs decreased. Additionally, the presence of MPs enhanced the charge output of the soil MESs by 40% (PLA+TC) and 18% (PVC+TC) compared with a control group without MPs (424 C). The loss in MP mass decreased after TC was added, suggesting a promotion of TC degradation rather than MP degradation for charge output. MPs altered the distribution of the highest occupied molecular orbitals and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of TC molecules and reduced the energy barrier for the TC hydrolysis reaction. The microbial community of the plastisphere exhibited a greater ability to degrade xenobiotics than the soil microbial community, indicating that MPs were hotspots for TC degradation. This study provides the first glimpse into the influence of MPs on the degradation of TC in MESs, laying a theoretical and methodological foundation for the systematic evaluation of the potential risks of environmental pollutants in the future. Microplastics (MPs) pose a significant environmental concern, particularly for terrestrial fauna. In this study, earthworms were used as a model organism to investigate the ecotoxicological effects of short-term exposure to virgin MPs on changes in metabolome and gut microbiota. High-throughput untargeted metabolomics showed significant internal reactions in the earthworms' metabolic processes due to MPs exposure, even when no visible stress signs, such as changes in growth or mortality rates, were present. Earthworms exposed to different concentrations of polyethylene (PE) MP exhibited significant disruption in 39 and 199 molecular features related to energy and lipid metabolism, anti-inflammatory, cell signaling, and membrane integrity. The activities of enzymes and transport proteins in earthworms were dysregulated when exposed to PE. Changes in the gut microbiota's community structure and complexity were observed in response to PE MPs exposure. Despite the relative stability in alpha-diversity and relative abundance, shifts in beta-diversity and network analysis in the PE-exposed group were indicative of an adaptive response to MPs. Earthworms exhibited resilience or adaptation in response to MPs exposure, potentially maintaining their functionality. The release of additives from microplastics is known to harm organisms. In the environment, microplastics are exposed to weathering processes which are suspected to influence additive leaching kinetics, the extent and mechanism of which remain poorly understood. We examined the impact of weathering on stabiliser additive leaching kinetics using environmentally relevant accelerated weathering and leaching procedures. Nine binary polymer-additive formulations were specifically prepared, weathered, analysed, and evaluated for their leaching characteristics. Cumulative additive release (Ce) varied widely between formulations, ranging from 0.009 to 1162 µg/g. Values of Ce generally increased by polymer type in the order polyethylene terephthalate < polyamide 6 < polyethylene. The change in leaching kinetics after accelerated weathering was incongruous across the nine formulations, with a significant change in Ce only observed for three out of nine formulations. Physicochemical characterisation of the microplastics demonstrated that additive blooming was the primary mechanism influencing the leaching response to weathering. These findings highlight the dependency of additive fate on the polymer type, additive chemistry, and the extent of weathering exposure. This has significant implications for risk assessment and mitigation, where the general assumption that polymer weathering increases additive leaching may be too simplistic. Expanded polystyrene (EPS), also known as Styrofoam, is a widespread global pollutant, and its lightweight floating property increases its chances of weathering by abrasion and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, resulting in microplastics. Herein, we investigated the effects of particle size ((1 µm versus 10 µm), UV irradiation (pristine versus UV oxidation), and origin (secondary versus primary) on the toxicity of Styrofoam microplastics. The target cells used in this study were selected based on human exposure-relevant cell lines: differentiated THP-1 cells for macrophages, Caco-2 for enterocytes, HepG2 for hepatocytes, and A549 for alveolar epithelial cells. In the differentiated THP-1 cells, the levels of cytotoxicity and inflammatory cytokines showed size- (1 µm > 10 µm), UV oxidation- (UV > pristine), and origin- (secondary > primary) dependency. Furthermore, the intrinsic oxidative potential of the test particles was positively correlated with cellular oxidative levels and toxicity endpoints, suggesting that the toxicity of Styrofoam microplastics also follows the oxidative stress paradigm. Additionally, all microplastics induced the activation of the pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and the release of interleukin-1β (IL-1β). These results imply that weathering process can aggravate the toxicity of Styrofoam microplastics due to the increased oxidative potential and decreased particle size. Nanoplastics and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) are ubiquitous emerging contaminants that are transferred among organisms through food chain in the ecosystem. This study evaluated the trophic transfer of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) and DEHP in a food chain including Chlorella pyrenoidosa , Daphnia magna and Micropterus salmoides (algae-crustacean-fish) and lipid metabolism at a higher trophic level in fish. Our results showed that the PSNPs and DEHP accumulated in C. pyrenoidosa or D. magna were transferred to the M. salmoides , of which the DEHP were not biomagnified, while the PSNPs were trophically amplified by the food chain. It is suggested that more PSNPs might be accumulated by higher level consumers in a longer food chain. Additionally, the trophic transfer of PSNPs and DEHP resulted in antioxidant response and histopathological damage in M. salmoides. Moreover, the lipid biochemical parameters and lipid metabolism related genes (fasn , hsl , cpt1a , atgl , apob , fabp1 , lpl , cetp) of M. salmoides were significantly affected, which indicated disturbance of lipid metabolism. Establishing concentration of microplastics (MPs), designated as C MP , in aqueous, semi-solid and solid samples originating from unscientifically created landfills/dumpsites (UCLDs) and engineered landfills (ELFs) is of utmost importance to assess their impact on the geoenvironment. However, the accuracy of C MP will be guided by the extraction efficiency of MPs from these samples. The extraction of MPs from semi-solid and solid samples of UCLDs/ELFs would be cumbersome, mainly due to their trapping in solid aggregates (including organic matter). Such aggregates need to be dispersed to release the MPs, which can be achieved through the assistance of ultrasonication (US) in the presence of an appropriate dispersing agent. However, mere dispersion of solid aggregates during the US might not result in the complete release of MPs adhered (AMPs) to MPs native (NMPs) to these samples. This is because MPs would adhere to the surface of the adjacent ones due to various physical-mechanical-thermal-chemical processes that prevail in landfills. Hence, guidelines for US-assisted extraction of MPs should be developed by considering an approach that would ensure (i) cleaning of NMPs' surface and (ii) release of AMPs without damaging the former. This necessitates understanding the influence of US parameters such as energy applied (E us), time (t us) and direct/indirect exposure of NMPs from landfills that would control C MP. In this context, the influence of above mentioned US parameters on the (i) surface cleaning of polyethylene NMPs and (ii) release of AMPs and their concentrations (C AMP) was investigated. It was observed that E us equal to 500 kJ/L during the indirect method of US would result in surface cleaning of NMPs and complete release of AMPs without damaging the farmer's structure. The present work acts as a precursor study to establish the guidelines for the US-assisted extraction of MPs in environmental samples. Antibiotics and microplastics (MPs) are two emerging pollutants in agroecosystems, however the effects of co-exposure to antibiotics and MPs remain unclear. The toxicity of florfenicol (FF) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on rice seedlings was investigated. FF and PS-MPs caused colloidal agglomeration, which changed the environmental behavior of FF. FF inhibited rice growth and altered antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase) activities, leading to membrane lipid peroxidation; impaired photosynthetic systems, decreased photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b, and carotene), chlorophyll precursors (Proto IX, Mg-Proto IX, and Pchlide), photosynthetic and respiratory rates. The key photosynthesis related genes (Psa A, Psa B, Psb A, Psb B, Psb C, and Psb D) were significantly down-regulated. The ultrastructure of mesophyll cells was destroyed with chloroplast swelling, membrane surface blurring, irregular thylakoid lamellar structure, and number of peroxisomes increased. PS-MPs mitigated FF toxicity, and the IBR index values showed that 10 mg∙L−1 PS-MPs were more effective. Metabolomic analysis revealed that the abundance of metabolites and metabolic pathways were altered by FF, was greater than the combined "MPs-FF" contamination. The metabolism of amino acids, sugars, and organic acids were severely interfered. Among these, 15 metabolic pathways were significantly altered, with the most significant effects on phenylalanine metabolism and the citric acid cycle (p < 0.05). Microplastics (MPs) and marine lipophilic phycotoxins (MLPs) are two classes of emerging contaminants. Together, they may exacerbate the negative impacts on nearshore marine ecosystems. Herein, the loading of 14 representative MLPs, closely related to toxin-producing algae, on MPs and their relations with colorful MPs have been explored for the first time based on both field and lab data. The objectives of our study are to explore the roles of multiple factors (waterborne MLPs and MP characteristics) in the loading of MLPs by MPs with the applications of various statistical means, and to further explore the role of the color of MP in the loading of specific MLPs through lab simulation experiments. Our results demonstrated that MPs color determined the loading of some specific MLPs on MPs and green MPs can load much more than other colorful fractions (p < 0.05). These interesting phenomena illustrated that the color effects on the loading processes of MLPs on MPs are a dynamic process, and it can be well explained by the shading effect of MP color, which may affect the growth and metabolism of the attached toxic-producing algae on MPs and hence the production of specific MLPs. Furthermore, loading of MLPs on MPs can be considered as the comprehensive physicochemical and biological processes. The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in sediments could pose risks to benthic organisms and their progeny. Here, we examined effects on traditional apical endpoints along with changes to whole body metabolite profiles induced by irregular shaped polyethylene MPs (1–45 µm) at environmentally relevant concentrations (125, 250, 500 and 1000 MPs/kg sediment) in Chironomus tepperi using a two-generation exposure regime. Survival and emergence of C. tepperi were negatively affected in the parental generation at the two highest concentrations, whereas endpoints associated with growth were only impacted at 1000 MPs/kg sediment. Metabolites associated with several amino acid and energy metabolism pathways were present at lower abundances at the highest exposure concentration suggesting an overall impact on bioenergetics which relates to the inhibition of food acquisition or nutrient assimilation caused by ingestion of MPs, rather than a traditional receptor-mediated toxicity response. In contrast, no significant effects on apical endpoints were observed in the continuous exposure of first filial generation, and lactic acid was the only metabolite that differed significantly between groups. Larvae in unexposed conditions showed no differences in survival or metabolite profiles suggesting that effects in the parental generation do not carry over to the next filial generation. The findings provide evidence on the underlying impacts of MP ingestion and potential adaption to MP exposure of C. tepperi. An in-depth understanding of urban road-deposited MPs is important for the accurate prediction of the risk posed by MPs in different exposure scenarios. This study provides new insights into the intrinsic/extrinsic factors in terms of the variability of concentration and species in urban road-deposited MPs. The study results confirmed that a considerable abundance of road-deposited MPs can be identified with the average concentration ranging from 0.33 to 3.64 g m-2. Land use types and sediment particle size are the important factors that contribute to MPs abundance. The majority of detected MPs including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are mainly derived from anthropogenic activities in commercial and residential land uses while rubber MP particles in urban road surfaces are mainly derived from tyre wear. The significant correlation (p < 0.05) between MPs and fine dust particles (< 150 µm) indicated the high affinity of small dust particles for MPs. The risk scores from MPs varied greatly from 10 to 11,000 among the study sites, which indicated the significant spatial variation of potential environmental risks posed by road-deposited MPs. The hotspots of risks posed by MPs were in areas with a high fraction of industrial, commercial and residential land uses. Specifically, the highest risk from MPs was found in mixed industrial and residential areas. Synthetic plastic is used throughout daily life and industry, threatening organisms with microplastic pollution. Polystyrene is a major plastic polymer and also widely found sources of plastic wastes and microplastics. Here, we report that Enterobacter hormaechei LG3 (CP118279.1), a facultative anaerobic bacterial strain isolated from the gut of Tenebrio molitor larvae (mealworms) can oxidize and depolymerize polystyrene under anaerobic conditions. LG3 performed biodegradation while forming a biofilm on the plastic surface. PS biodegradation was characterized by analyses of surface oxidation, change in morphology and molecular weights, and production of biodegraded derivative. The biodegradation performance by LG3 was compared with PS biodegradation by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SCGB1 under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. In addition, through nanopore sequencing technology, we identified degradative enzymes, including thiol peroxidase (tpx), alkyl hydroperoxide reductase C (ahpC) and bacterioferritin comigratory protein (bcp). Along with the upregulation of degradative enzymes for biodegradation, changes in lipid A and biofilm-associated proteins were also observed after the cells were incubated with polystyrene microplastics. Our results provide evidence for anaerobic biodegradation by polystyrene-degrading bacteria and show alterations in gene expression patterns after polystyrene microplastics treatment in the opportunistic pathogen Enterobacter hormaechei. This study investigates the toxicity of methanolic extracts obtained from compostable plastics (BPs) and conventional plastics (both virgin and recycled). Additionally, it explores the potential influence of plastic photodegradation and composting on toxic responses using a battery of in vitro assays conducted in PLHC-1 cells. The extracts of BPs, but not those of conventional plastics, induced a significant decrease in cell viability (<70%) in PLHC-1 cells after 24 h of exposure. Toxicity was enhanced by either photodegradation or composting of BPs. Extracts of conventional plastics, and particularly those of recycled plastics, induced 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity and micronucleus formation in exposed cells, indicating the presence of significant amounts of CYP1A inducers and genotoxic compounds in the extracts, which was enhanced by photodegradation. These findings highlight the importance of investigating the effects of degradation mechanisms such as sunlight and composting on the toxicity of BPs. • Biodegradation of mixtures of waste plastic comprising of weathered PE & PS films has been accomplished successfully. • Significant weight loss was observed. • Waste plastics harbor distinct microbial communities (composition and functional profile) compared to planktonic counterpart. This work sheds light on the physicochemical changes of naturally weathered polymer surfaces along with changes of polymer buoyancy due to biofilm formation and degradation processes. To support the degradation hypothesis, a microcosm experiment was conducted where a mixture of naturally weathered plastic pieces was incubated with an indigenous pelagic community. A series of analyses were employed in order to describe the alteration of the physicochemical characteristics of the polymer (FTIR, SEC and GPC, sinking velocity) as well as the biofilm community (NGS). At the end of phase II, the fraction of double bonds in the surface of microbially treated PE films increased while changes were also observed in the profile of the PS films. The molecular weight of PE pieces increased with incubation time reaching the molecular weight of the virgin pieces (230,000 g mol−1) at month 5 but the buoyancy displayed no difference throughout the experimental period. The number-average molecular weight of PS pieces decreased (33% and 27% in INDG and BIOG treatment respectively), implying chain scission; accelerated (by more than 30%) sinking velocities compared to the initial weathered pieces were also measured for PS films with biofilm on their surface. The orders Rhodobacterales, Oceanospirillales and Burkholderiales dominated the distinct platisphere communities and the genera Bacillus and Pseudonocardia discriminate these assemblages from the planktonic counterpart. The functional analysis predicts overrepresentation of adhesive cells carrying xenobiotic and hydrocarbon degradation genes. Taking these into account, we can suggest that tailored marine consortia have the ability to thrive in the presence of mixtures of plastics and participate in their degradation. Plastic waste is considered a major threat for terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems. Ingestion of primary or secondary microparticles resulting from plastic degradation can lead to their trophic transfer raising serious health concerns. In this study, the effect of amine and carboxy functionalized polystyrene microparticles on the physiology of daphnids was investigated with a combination of phenotypic and metabolic endpoints. Carboxy functionalized microparticles showed higher toxicity in acute exposures compared to their amine counterparts. Accumulation of both microparticles in animal gut was confirmed by stereo-microscopy as well as fluorescent microscopy which showed no presence of particles in the rest of the animal. Fluorescence based quantification of microparticles extracted from animal lysates validated their concentration-dependent uptake. Additionally, exposure of daphnids to amine and carboxy functionalized microparticles resulted in increased activities of key enzymes related to metabolism and detoxification. Finally, significant metabolic perturbations were discovered following exposure to microplastics. These findings suggest that polystyrene microparticles can hinder organism performance of the freshwater species and highlight the importance of seeking for holistic and physiological endpoints for pollution assessment. Nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs) could act as potential carriers for pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and alter the bioavailability in the aquatic environment. The effects of NPs and MPs of polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) on the availability of five PPCPs including carbamazepine, bisphenol A, estrone, triclocarban and 4-tert-octylphenol were investigated by negligible depletion solid- phase microextraction (nd-SPME). The freely dissolved concentrations of PPCPs decreased with the increasing concentrations of NPs/MPs. The overall order of the sorption coefficients (log K NP / log K MP) of PPCPs was as follows: 100 nm PS > 50 nm PS > 1 µm PS > 100 µm PS > 100 µm PE. Sorption of PPCPs by NPs was generally 1–2 orders of magnitude stronger than to MPs. The log K NP / log K MP values (3.16–5.21) increased with the log K OW (2.45–5.28) of PPCPs, however, linear correlation was only observed between log K MP and log K OW. The particle size, specific surface area, aggregation state as well as hydrophobicity played an important role in the sorption. Coexistence of fulic acid (FA) with NPs inhibited the sorption due to the fouling of FA on NPs. This study suggests that sorption of PPCPs to MPs/NPs could reduce bioavailability of PPCPs in the aquatic environment. The production of plastic is still increasing globally, which has led to an increasing number of plastic particles in the environment. Nanoplastics (NPs) can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and induce neurotoxicity, but in-depth mechanism and effective protection strategies are lacking. Here, C57BL/6 J mice were treated with 60 μg polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs, 80 nm) by intragastric administration for 42 days to establish NPs exposure model. We found that 80 nm PS-NPs could reach and cause neuronal damage in the hippocampus, and alter the expression of neuroplasticity-related molecules (5-HT, AChE, GABA, BDNF and CREB), and even affect the learning and memory ability of mice. Mechanistically, combined with the results of hippocampus transcriptome, gut microbiota 16 s ribosomal RNA and plasma metabolomics, we found that the gut-brain axis mediated circadian rhythm related pathways were involved in the neurotoxicity of NPs, especially Camk2g, Adcyap1 and Per1 may be the key genes. Both melatonin and probiotic can significantly reduce intestinal injury and restore the expression of circadian rhythm-related genes and neuroplasticity molecules, and the intervention effect of melatonin is more effective. Collectively, the results strongly suggest the gut-brain axis mediated hippocampal circadian rhythm changes involved in the neurotoxicity of PS-NPs. Pharmaceuticals and microplastics constitute potential hazards in aquatic systems, but their combined effects and underlying toxicity mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, a simultaneous characterization of bioaccumulation, associated metabolomic alterations and potential recovery mechanisms was performed. Specifically, a bioassay on Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) was carried out with polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPLs, 1 mg/L) and citalopram or bezafibrate (500 ng/L). Single and co-exposure scenarios lasted 21 days, followed by a 7-day depuration period to assess their potential recovery. Plastic aging occurs in all environmental media and affects their environmental behavior and toxicity. In this study, non-thermal plasma was applied to simulate the aging process of plastics, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET-film) being used as a model. The surface morphology, mass defects, toxicity of aged PET-film and the generation of airborne fine particles were comprehensively characterized. The surface of PET films began to become rough and then gradually became uneven, generating pores, protrusions and cracks. The toxicity of aged PET films was assessed in Caenorhabditis elegans which significantly reduced head thrashing, body bending and brood size. A single particle aerosol mass spectrometry instrument was used to characterize the size distribution and chemical composition of airborne fine particles in real-time. Few particles were observed during the first 90 min, while the generation of particles accelerated significantly after aging time beyond 90 min. For two pieces of PET film with surface area of 5 cm2, during the 180 min, at least 15113 ± 153 fine particles were generated, having a unimodal size distribution with a peak of 0.4 µm. The main components of these particles included metals, inorganic non-metals, and organic components. The results provide useful information on plastic aging and are beneficial in assessing the potential environmental risks. This study aimed to investigate the combined decomposition of polystyrene (PS) microplastics using three bacterial cultures: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia , Bacillus velezensis , and Acinetobacter radioresistens. The ability of all three strains to grow on medium containing PS (Mn 90,000 Da, Mw 241,200 Da) microplastics as the sole carbon source was examined. After 60 days of A. radioresistens treatment, the maximum weight loss of the PS microplastics was found to be 16.7 ± 0.6% (half-life 251.1 d). After 60 days of treatment with S. maltophilia and B. velezensis , the maximum weight loss of PS microplastics was 43.5 ± 0.8% (half-life 74.9 d). After 60 days of treatment with S. maltophilia , B. velezensis , and A. radioresistens , the weight loss of the PS microplastics was 17.0 ± 0.2% (half-life 224.2 d). The S. maltophilia and B. velezensis treatment showed a more significant degradation effect after 60 days. This result was attributed to interspecific assistance and interspecific competition. Biodegradation of PS microplastics was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle, high-temperature gel chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. This study is the first to explore the degradation ability of different bacterial combinations on PS microplastics, providing a reference for future research on the biodegradation technology of mixed bacteria. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) represent an interface between microbial cells and aquatic environment, where nanoplastics acquire coatings to alter their fate and toxicity. However, little is known about molecular interactions governing modification of nanoplastics at biological interfaces. Molecular dynamics simulations combining experiments were conducted to investigate assembly of EPS and its regulatory roles in the aggregation of differently charged nanoplastics and interactions with bacterial membrane. Driven by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions, EPS formed micelle-like supramolecular structures with hydrophobic core and amphiphilic exterior. Different components, depending on their hydrophobicity and charge, were found to promote or suppress EPS assembly. Neutral and hydrophobic nanoplastics showed unbiased adsorption of EPS species, while cationic and anionic nanoplastics were distinct and attracted specific molecules of opposite charges. Compared with isolated EPS, assembled EPS concealed hydrophobic groups to be less adsorbed by nanoplastics. Aggregation of nanoplastics was alleviated by EPS due to electrostatic repulsion plus steric hindrance. ESP suppressed binding of cationic nanoplastics to the bacterial membrane through reducing the surface charge. Neutral and anionic nanoplastics showed weak membrane association, but their binding interactions were promoted by EPS. The study on micro/nanoplastic pollution should embrace complexity. Here, we aim to develop an aquatic environmental system-based comprehensive assessment approach of micro/nanoplastic impacts (ACAM) to evaluate the effects of micro/nanoplastics on aquatic ecosystems from the global environmental change (GEC) and systematic perspective. A case study for freshwater systems in Saskatchewan, Canada was conducted to evaluate the comprehensive effects of multiple GEC factors (polystyrene-nanoplastics (PS-NPs), N, P, salinity, dissolved organic matter (DOM), pH, hardness) on Asterococcus superbus based on ten ecologically relevant endpoints. It is found that at the cellular level, PS-NPs and N had an antagonistic interaction on microalgal growth in the Saskatchewan freshwater ecosystem; at the molecular level, the PS-NP-induced changes in lipid composition in microalgae were regulated by P, DOM, and pH. The significance ranking of factor effects suggested that instead of PS-NPs pollution, the fluctuations in pH level, DOM and N concentrations should be paid attention to first in Saskatchewan. Under the combined impact of PS-NPs and other GEC factors, microalgae at station 14 (Qu'Appelle River near highway 56) might have the minimum growth rate with [−0.048, 0.094] d-1 in Saskatchewan. Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants. Landfills store up to 42% of worldwide plastic waste and serve as an important source of MPs. However, the study of MPs distribution and the plastic biodegradation potential in landfills is limited. In this study, the distribution of abundance, size, morphology and polymer type of MPs and plastics biodegradation species in refuse samples along landfill depths were extensively investigated within a large-scale landfill in Shenzhen, China. In addition, plastics biodegradation enzymes were evaluated in seven Chinese large-scale landfills leachate. MPs distribution pattern was investigated in all refuse samples. The abundance of MPs in refuse samples varied between 81 and 133 items/g. The size of MPs in all samples varied between 0.03 and 5 mm, and the average sizes were 1.2 mm ± 0.1 mm. The main morphology and polymer type were fragments and cellophane, respectively. Landfill depth was significantly negatively correlated with the relative abundance of MPs size 1–5 mm (p < 0.05) and was positively correlated with the relative abundance of MPs size < 0.2 mm (p < 0.05), suggesting that plastics were broken down during municipal solid waste decomposition. The multiple regression on matrices analysis further showed the landfill depths and plastic morphology significantly impact the MPs distribution. The strains, Lysinibacillus massiliensis (with relative abundance of 1.8%) for low-density polyethylene and polystyrene biodegradation, and Pseudomonas stutzeri (0.1%) for low density polythene and polypropylene biodegradation, were detected on the plastic surface with high relative abundance. Remediating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))-contaminated soils using green synthesized nano-iron (g-nZVI), which merits high reactivity, low cost, and environmental friendliness, has attracted significant attention. However, the broad existence of nano plastics (NPs) could adsorb Cr(VI) and subsequently influence in situ remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil by g-nZVI. To clarify this issue and improve the remediation efficiency, we investigated the co-transport between Cr(VI) and g-nZVI coexisting with sulfonyl-amino-modified nano plastics (SANPs) in water-saturated sand media in the presence of oxyanions (i.e., phosphate and sulfate) at environmentally relevant conditions. This study found that SANPs inhibited the Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III) (i.e., Cr 2 O 3) by g-nZVI, attributed to nZVI-SANPs hetero-aggregates and Cr(VI) adsorption on SANPs. Notably, "nZVI-[SANPs•••Cr(III)]" agglomerate happened via complexation of [–NH 3 •••Cr(III)] between Cr(III) from Cr(VI) reduced by g-nZVI and amino group on SANPs. Further, the co-presence of phosphate (stronger adsorption on SANPs than g-nZVI) remarkably suppressed Cr(VI) reduction. Then, it promoted the co-transport of Cr(VI) with nZVI-SANPs hetero-aggregates, which could potentially threaten underground water. Fundamentally, sulfate would instead concentrate on SANPs, hardly impacting the reactions between Cr(VI) and g-nZVI. The currently established tools and materials for elimination of the emerging contaminants from environmental and food matrices, particularly micro- and nano-scale plastics, have been largely limited by complicated preparation/operation, high cost, and poor degradability. Here we show that, crosslinking naturally occurring corn starch and gelatin produces ultralight porous sponge upon freeze-drying that can be readily enzymatically decomposed to glucose; The sponge affords capture of micro- and nano-scale plastics into its pores by simple pressing in an efficiency up to 90% while preserving excellent mechanical strength. Heterogeneous diffusion was found to play a dominant role in the adsorption of microplastics by the starch-gelatin sponge. Investigations into the performance of the sponge in complex matrices including tap water, sea water, soil surfactant, and take-out dish soup, further reveal a considerably high removal efficiency (60%∼70%) for the microplastics in the real samples. It is also suggested tiny plastics in different sizes be removable using the sponge with controlled pore size. With combined merits of sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and simple operation without the need for professional background for this approach, industrial and even household removal of tiny plastic contaminants from environmental and food samples are within reach. Functional face masks that can effectively remove particulate matter and pathogens are critical to addressing the urgent health needs arising from industrial air pollution and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, most commercial masks are manufactured by tedious and complicated network-forming procedures (e.g., meltblowing and electrospinning). In addition, the materials used (e.g., polypropylene) have significant limitations such as a lack of pathogen inactivation and degradability, which can cause secondary infection and serious environmental concerns if discarded. Here, we present a facile and straightforward method for creating biodegradable and self-disinfecting masks based on collagen fiber networks. These masks not only provide superior protection against a wide range of hazardous substances in polluted air, but also address environmental concerns associated with waste disposal. Importantly, collagen fiber networks with naturally existing hierarchical microporous structures can be easily modified by tannic acid to improve its mechanical characteristics and enable the in situ production of silver nanoparticles. The resulting masks exhibit excellent antibacterial (>99.99%, 15 min) and antiviral (>99.999%, 15 min) capabilities, as well as high PM 2.5 removal efficiency (>99.9%, 30 s). We further demonstrate the integration of the mask into a wireless platform for respiratory monitoring. Therefore, the smart mask has enormous promise for combating air pollution and contagious viruses, managing personal health, and alleviating waste issues caused by commercial masks. Nanoplastics are ubiquitous in marine environments, understanding to what extent nanoplastics accumulate in bivalves and the adverse effects derived from their retention is imperative for evaluating the detrimental effects in the benthic ecosystem. Here, using palladium-doped polystyrene nanoplastics (139.5 nm, 43.8 mV), we quantitatively determined nanoplastic accumulation in Ruditapes philippinarum and investigated its toxic effects by combining physiological damage assessments with a toxicokinetic model and 16 S rRNA sequencing. After a 14 days exposure, significant nanoplastic accumulation was observed, up to 17.2 and 137.9 mg·kg−1 for the environmentally realistic (0.02 mg·L−1) and ecologically (2 mg·L−1) relevant groups, respectively. Ecologically relevant nanoplastic concentrations evidently attenuated the total antioxidant capacity and stimulated excessive reactive oxygen species, which elicited lipid peroxidation, apoptosis, and pathological damage. The modeled uptake (k 1) and elimination (k 2) rate constants (from physiologically based pharmacokinetic model) were significantly negatively correlated with short-term toxicity. Although no obvious toxic effects were found, environmentally realistic exposures notably altered the intestinal microbial community structure. This work increases our understanding of how the accumulation of nanoplastics influences their toxic effects in terms of the toxicokinetics and gut microbiota, providing further evidence of their potential environmental risks. The characteristics and fates of microplastics (MPs) and humic acid (HA) in the environment are significantly influenced by their interactions. Thus, the influence of the MP–HA interaction on their dynamic characteristics was explored. Upon MP–HA interaction, the number of hydrogen bonds established in the HA domains decreased significantly, and the water molecules bridging the hydrogen bonds shifted to the exterior regions of the MP–HA aggregates. The distribution intensity of Ca2+ located at ∼0.21 nm around HA deceased, indicating that the coordination of Ca2+ with the carboxyl on HA was impaired in the presence of MPs. Additionally, the Ca2+–HA electrostatic interaction was suppressed because of the steric hindrance of the MPs. However, the MP–HA interaction improved the distribution of water molecules and metal cations around the MPs. The diffusion coefficient of HA decreased from 0.34 × 10−5 cm2/s to 0.20–0.28 × 10−5 cm2/s in the presence of MPs, implying that the diffusion of HA was retarded. The diffusion coefficients of polyethylene and polystyrene increased from 0.29 × 10−5 cm2/s and 0.18 × 10−5 cm2/s to 0.32 × 10−5 cm2/s and 0.22 × 10−5 cm2/s, respectively, indicating that the interaction with HA accelerated the migration of polyethylene and polystyrene. This study focused on the biodegradation of LDPE films using a novel isolate of Bacillus obtained from soil samples collected from a 20-year-old plastic waste dump. The aim was to evaluate the biodegradability of LDPE films treated with this bacterial isolate. The results indicated a 43% weight loss of LDPE films within 120 days of treatment. The biodegradability of LDPE films was confirmed through various testing methods, including BATH, FDA, CO 2 evolution tests, and changes in total cell growth count, protein content, viability, pH of the medium, and release of microplastics. The bacterial enzymes, including laccases, lipases, and proteases, were also identified. SEM analysis revealed biofilm formation and surface changes in treated LDPE films, while EDAX analysis showed a reduction in carbon elements. AFM analysis demonstrated differences in roughness compared to the control. Furthermore, wettability increased and tensile strength decreased, confirming the biodegradation of the isolate. FTIR spectral analysis showed changes in skeletal vibrations, such as stretches and bends, in the linear structure of polyethylene. FTIR imaging and GC-MS analysis also confirmed the biodegradation of LDPE films by the novel isolate identified as Bacillus cereus strain NJD1. The impacts of microplastics (MPs) prevalent in soil on the transport of pollutants were urged to be addressed, which has important implications for ecological risk assessment. Therefore, we investigated the influence of virgin/photo-aged biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and non-biodegradable black polyethylene (BPE) mulching films MPs on arsenic (As) transport behaviors in agricultural soil. Results showed that both virgin PLA (VPLA) and aged PLA (APLA) enhanced the adsorption of As(Ⅲ) (9.5%, 13.3%) and As(Ⅴ) (22.0%, 6.8%) due to the formation of abundant H-bonds. Conversely, virgin BPE (VBPE) reduced the adsorption of As(Ⅲ) (11.0%) and As(Ⅴ) (7.4%) in soil owing to the "dilution effect", while aged BPE (ABPE) improved arsenic adsorption amount to the level of pure soil due to newly generated O-containing functional groups being feasible to form H-bonds with arsenic. Site energy distribution analysis indicated that the dominant adsorption mechanism of arsenic, chemisorption, was not impacted by MPs. The occurrence of biodegradable VPLA/APLA MPs rather than non-biodegradable VBPE/ABPE MPs resulted in an increased risk of soil accumulating As(Ⅲ) (moderate) and As(Ⅴ) (considerable). Biodegradable plastics have emerged as a potential solution to the mounting plastic pollution crisis. However, current methods for evaluating the degradation of these plastics are limited in detecting structural changes rapidly and accurately, particularly for PBAT, which contains worrying benzene rings. Inspired by the fact that the aggregation of conjugated groups can endow polymers with intrinsic fluorescence, this work found that PBAT emits a bright blue-green fluoresces under UV irradiation. More importantly, we pioneered a degradation evaluation approach to track the degradation process of PBAT via fluorescence. A blue shift of fluorescence wavelength as the thickness and molecular weight of PBAT film decreased during degradation in an alkali solution was observed. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity of the degradation solution increased gradually as the degradation progressed, and was found to be exponentially correlated with the concentration of benzene ring-containing degradation products following filtration with the correlation coefficient is up to 0.999. This study proposes a promising new strategy for monitoring the degradation process with visualization and high sensitivity. Microplastics (MPs) have become widespread in the modern world posing a hidden threat to the global environment. However, growing accumulation and devastating impact of MPs on human health and the environment have received least attention. In the current investigation, for the first time MPs have been identified which are released from the daily usable materials like polythene bags (PB) and paper cups (PC) in response to hot and cold water exposure at different time intervals. The impact of these MPs has been assessed on the major antioxidant enzyme, bovine liver catalase (BLC). The binding of MPs caused conformational changes in BLC by decreasing the α-helical content, which results in reduction of the enzymatic activity. Kinetics study revealed nearly ∼1.4-fold compromised catalytic efficiency of catalase in response to MPs. Nevertheless, hepatic catalase activity was also significantly decreased in presence of MPs. Further, materials like glass, porcelain, stainless steel, and high-grade plastics are discovered as greener alternatives to PB and PC. Biodegradable plastics has aroused increasing concern due to the negative environmental impact of plastic waste, however, the impact of biodegradable plastics mixed into kitchen waste (KW) on composting remains poorly understood, especially focusing on bacterial communities in the unique "plastisphere". Here, KW composting for 120 days with adding poly lactic acid / poly butylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PLA/PBAT) plastics were conducted to reveal the dynamics of bacterial composition, succession, and assembly process in different ecological niches (compost and plastisphere). Results showed that the existence of PLA/PBAT plastics in composting would not significantly affect the safety and maturation of composts. After composting, 80% PLA/PBAT were degraded and there were prominent divergences of bacterial compositions between plastisphere, composts with PLA/PBAT and control. Co-occurrence network suggested that PLA/PBAT plastisphere exhibited higher network complexity and cohesion than that in compost, and PLA/PBAT increased bacterial module hubs, network hubs, and connectors in composting compared to control, but might enrich pathogens. Phylogenetic bin-based null model analysis indicated that stochastic processes obviously shaped the communities on PLA/PBAT plastisphere, but compare to control, PLA/PBAT plastics enhanced the contribution of deterministic processes on composting bacterial community assembly. These findings deeply understood the assembly patterns and diversity of plastisphere and composting processes, laying down a foundation on applying biodegradable plastics under the classification of domestic garbage.
