Environmental pollution caused by plastic waste has become global problem that needs to be considered urgently. In the pursuit of a circular plastic economy, biodegradation provides an attractive strategy for managing plastic wastes, whereas effective plastic-degrading microbes and enzymes are required. In this study, we report that Blastobotrys sp. G-9 isolated from discarded plastic in landfills is capable of depolymerizing polyurethanes (PU) and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). Strain G-9 degrades up to 60% of PU foam after 21 days of incubation at 28 ℃ by breaking down carbonyl groups via secretory hydrolase as confirmed by structural characterization of plastics and degradation products identification. Within the supernatant of strain G-9, we identify a novel cutinase BaCut1, belonging to the esterase family, that can reproduce the same effect. BaCut1 demonstrates efficient degradation toward commercial polyester plastics PU foam (0.5 mg enzyme/25 mg plastic) and agricultural film PBAT (0.5 mg enzyme/10 mg plastic) with 50% and 18% weight loss at 37 ℃ for 48 h, respectively. BaCut1 hydrolyzes PU into adipic acid as a major end-product with 42.9% recovery via ester bond cleavage, and visible biodegradation is also identified from PBAT, which is a beneficial feature for future recycling economy. Molecular docking, along with products distribution, elucidates a special substrate-binding modes of BaCut1 with plastic substrate analogue. Microplastics and nanoplastics are ubiquitous in rivers and undergo environmental aging. However, the molecular mechanisms of plastic aging and the in-depth effects of aging on ecological functions remain unclear in waters. The synergies of microplastics and nanoplastics (polystyrene as an example) with natural organic small molecules (e.g., natural hyaluronic acid and vitamin C related to biological tissue decomposition) are the key to producing radicals (•OH and •C). The radicals promote the formation of bubbles on plastic surfaces and generate derivatives of plastics such as monomer and dimer styrene. Nanoplastics are easier to age than microplastics. Pristine plastics inhibit the microbial Shannon diversity index and evenness, but the opposite results are observed for aging plastics. Pristine plastics curb pectin decomposition (an indicator of plant-originated refractory carbon), but aging plastics promote pectin decomposition. Microplastics and nanoplastics undergoing aging processes enhance the carbon biogeochemical cycle. For example, the increased carbohydrate active enzyme diversity, especially the related glycoside hydrolase and functional species Pseudomonas and Clostridium , contributes to refractory carbon decomposition. The escalating accumulation of plastic waste in ecosystems poses a significant health concern to soil environment, yet the environmental effects of plastics remains largely unexplored. Biodegradable plastics could offer a viable alternative to conventional persistent plastics, but our understanding of their potential benefits or detrimental effects on the decomposition of plant debris by soil biomass is limited. In this study, we conducted a year-long field experiment to examine the environmental response and impact on plant debris decomposition in the presence of varying quantities of persistent versus biodegradable plastics. Our findings indicate that the decomposition rate decreased by 2.8–4.9% for persistent plastics, while it increased by 1.3–4.2% for biodegradable plastics. Persistent plastics primarily induced adverse effects, including a reduction in soil nutrients, microbial diversity, bioturbation, enzyme activity, easily decomposable carbon, and microbial biomass carbon in plant debris. In contrast, biodegradable plastics resulted in beneficial effects such as an increase in enzyme activity, microbial biomass carbon, and easily decomposable carbon. We also observed that the decomposition rate of plant residues and nutrient release are closely associated with changes in the organic carbon chemical structure induced by different plastic film fragments. A significant shift in alkoxy carbon content facilitated the release of nutrients and soluble carbon, while modifications in carboxyl and aromatic carbon content hindered their release. Overall, our study reveals over one year that biodegradable plastics primarily induce positive effects on the decomposition of soil organic matter. Plastic pollution, particularly microplastics, poses a significant environmental challenge. This study aimed to address the urgent need for sustainable solutions to manage plastic waste. The degradation of polyethylene microplastics (PEMPs) and nylon 6,6 microplastics (NMPs) were investigated using bacterial culture isolates, isolated from a municipal landfill site and identified through 16 S rDNA as well as metagenomics techniques.The study demonstrated for the first time along with degradation mechanism. The isolates identified as Achromobacter xylosoxidans and mixed culture species in dominance of Pulmonis sp. were used to degrade PEMPs and NMPs. Achromobacter xylosoxidans reduced microplastic's dry weight by 26.7% (PEMPs) and 21.3% (NMPs) in 40 days, while the mixed culture achieved weight reductions of 19.3% (PEMPs) and 20% (NMPs). The release of enzymes, laccase and peroxidases revealed C-C bond cleavage and reduced polymer chain length. The thermal studies (TGA and DSC) revealed changes in the thermal stability and transition characteristics of microplastics. The structural alterations on PEMPs and NMPs were recorded by FTIR analysis. Byproducts such as alkanes, esters, aromatic compounds and carboxylic acids released were identified by GC-MS. These results suggest the effectiveness of bacterial isolates in degrading PEMPs and NMPs, with potential for sustainable plastic waste management solutions. To address the challenging issues of waste plastic pollution and petroleum shortage, we report herein a pulse pressurized catalytic pyrolysis process where polyethylene is continuously converted into aromatics using HZSM-5 catalyst incorporated with hydrated SiO 2. Pressurization improves the activity of single-pulse pyrolysis of polyethylene by 14.42%. In contrast to the linear decrease of BTEXS relative yield with a K value of − 0.23 under non-pressurized conditions, pressurization results in a notable stability in the latter stage, characterized by a K value of only − 0.063. Comprehensive catalyst characterization demonstrates that pressurization promotes the release of water from hydrated SiO 2 , enabling HZSM-5 to effectively undergo dealumination and obtain suitable acidity and pore structure, and ultimately enhancing the resistance to carbon deposition. In summary, pressurization improves both pyrolysis activity and catalysis stability, offering a promising strategy for the high-value utilization of waste plastics. • Biodegradation of mixtures of waste plastic comprising of weathered PE & PS films has been accomplished successfully. • Significant weight loss was observed. • Waste plastics harbor distinct microbial communities (composition and functional profile) compared to planktonic counterpart. This work sheds light on the physicochemical changes of naturally weathered polymer surfaces along with changes of polymer buoyancy due to biofilm formation and degradation processes. To support the degradation hypothesis, a microcosm experiment was conducted where a mixture of naturally weathered plastic pieces was incubated with an indigenous pelagic community. A series of analyses were employed in order to describe the alteration of the physicochemical characteristics of the polymer (FTIR, SEC and GPC, sinking velocity) as well as the biofilm community (NGS). At the end of phase II, the fraction of double bonds in the surface of microbially treated PE films increased while changes were also observed in the profile of the PS films. The molecular weight of PE pieces increased with incubation time reaching the molecular weight of the virgin pieces (230,000 g mol−1) at month 5 but the buoyancy displayed no difference throughout the experimental period. The number-average molecular weight of PS pieces decreased (33% and 27% in INDG and BIOG treatment respectively), implying chain scission; accelerated (by more than 30%) sinking velocities compared to the initial weathered pieces were also measured for PS films with biofilm on their surface. The orders Rhodobacterales, Oceanospirillales and Burkholderiales dominated the distinct platisphere communities and the genera Bacillus and Pseudonocardia discriminate these assemblages from the planktonic counterpart. The functional analysis predicts overrepresentation of adhesive cells carrying xenobiotic and hydrocarbon degradation genes. Taking these into account, we can suggest that tailored marine consortia have the ability to thrive in the presence of mixtures of plastics and participate in their degradation. Plastic waste is considered a major threat for terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems. Ingestion of primary or secondary microparticles resulting from plastic degradation can lead to their trophic transfer raising serious health concerns. In this study, the effect of amine and carboxy functionalized polystyrene microparticles on the physiology of daphnids was investigated with a combination of phenotypic and metabolic endpoints. Carboxy functionalized microparticles showed higher toxicity in acute exposures compared to their amine counterparts. Accumulation of both microparticles in animal gut was confirmed by stereo-microscopy as well as fluorescent microscopy which showed no presence of particles in the rest of the animal. Fluorescence based quantification of microparticles extracted from animal lysates validated their concentration-dependent uptake. Additionally, exposure of daphnids to amine and carboxy functionalized microparticles resulted in increased activities of key enzymes related to metabolism and detoxification. Finally, significant metabolic perturbations were discovered following exposure to microplastics. These findings suggest that polystyrene microparticles can hinder organism performance of the freshwater species and highlight the importance of seeking for holistic and physiological endpoints for pollution assessment. This study focused on the biodegradation of LDPE films using a novel isolate of Bacillus obtained from soil samples collected from a 20-year-old plastic waste dump. The aim was to evaluate the biodegradability of LDPE films treated with this bacterial isolate. The results indicated a 43% weight loss of LDPE films within 120 days of treatment. The biodegradability of LDPE films was confirmed through various testing methods, including BATH, FDA, CO 2 evolution tests, and changes in total cell growth count, protein content, viability, pH of the medium, and release of microplastics. The bacterial enzymes, including laccases, lipases, and proteases, were also identified. SEM analysis revealed biofilm formation and surface changes in treated LDPE films, while EDAX analysis showed a reduction in carbon elements. AFM analysis demonstrated differences in roughness compared to the control. Furthermore, wettability increased and tensile strength decreased, confirming the biodegradation of the isolate. FTIR spectral analysis showed changes in skeletal vibrations, such as stretches and bends, in the linear structure of polyethylene. FTIR imaging and GC-MS analysis also confirmed the biodegradation of LDPE films by the novel isolate identified as Bacillus cereus strain NJD1. Biodegradable plastics has aroused increasing concern due to the negative environmental impact of plastic waste, however, the impact of biodegradable plastics mixed into kitchen waste (KW) on composting remains poorly understood, especially focusing on bacterial communities in the unique "plastisphere". Here, KW composting for 120 days with adding poly lactic acid / poly butylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PLA/PBAT) plastics were conducted to reveal the dynamics of bacterial composition, succession, and assembly process in different ecological niches (compost and plastisphere). Results showed that the existence of PLA/PBAT plastics in composting would not significantly affect the safety and maturation of composts. After composting, 80% PLA/PBAT were degraded and there were prominent divergences of bacterial compositions between plastisphere, composts with PLA/PBAT and control. Co-occurrence network suggested that PLA/PBAT plastisphere exhibited higher network complexity and cohesion than that in compost, and PLA/PBAT increased bacterial module hubs, network hubs, and connectors in composting compared to control, but might enrich pathogens. Phylogenetic bin-based null model analysis indicated that stochastic processes obviously shaped the communities on PLA/PBAT plastisphere, but compare to control, PLA/PBAT plastics enhanced the contribution of deterministic processes on composting bacterial community assembly. These findings deeply understood the assembly patterns and diversity of plastisphere and composting processes, laying down a foundation on applying biodegradable plastics under the classification of domestic garbage. Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most common synthetic polymers, and PE waste pollution has been an environmental and health concern for decades. Biodegradation is the most eco-friendly and effective approach for plastic waste management. Recently, an emphasis has been placed on novel symbiotic yeasts isolated from termite guts as promising microbiomes for multiple biotechnological applications. This study might be the first to explore the potential of a constructed tri-culture yeast consortium, designated as DYC, isolated from termites for the degradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The yeast consortium DYC stands for the molecularly identified species Sterigmatomyces halophilus, Meyerozyma guilliermondii, and Meyerozyma caribbica. The LDPE-DYC consortium showed a high growth rate on UV-sterilized LDPE as a sole carbon source, resulting in a reduction in tensile strength (TS) of 63.4% and a net LDPE mass reduction of 33.2% compared to the individual yeasts. All yeasts, individually and in consortium, showed a high production rate for LDPE-degrading enzymes. The hypothetical LDPE biodegradation pathway that was proposed revealed the formation of several metabolites, including alkanes, aldehydes, ethanol, and fatty acids. Freshwater ecosystems are subjected to plastic extensive pollution because they are the direct link between plastic wastes and marine ecosystems. The aim of this study was to assess the impacts of different sizes of polyethylene plastics (micro: µPs and macroplastics: PBs) on freshwater decomposers of plant litter. We exposed leaf associated microbial assemblages to µPs (0.5 or 1.5 g L-1) and discs of PBs as follows: green plastic bags (PB-G) alone or in mixtures with transparent plastic bags (PB-Mix). Then, we conducted a feeding preference experiment with the invertebrate shredder Limnephilus sp. to assess their capacity to distinguish leaf discs from PB discs of the same size (12 mm). Leaf decomposition, activities of fungal enzymes and sporulation were inhibited by µPs and PB-Mix, and shifts in fungal community composition were observed. The invertebrate shredders preferred to feed on leaves treated with µPs avoiding those exposed to PB-G/PB-Mix. Our results demonstrated that plastics can have a direct effect on stream-dwelling microbial decomposers and an indirect effect on higher trophic levels (shredders), highlighting that trophic transfer is a route of plastic exposure. The plastic properties (size, concentration, colour) appear to influence plastic toxicity to microbes and shredders, indicating the importance of considering physicochemical properties when assessing their risks to freshwater ecosystems. The omnipresent accumulation and non-degradable nature of plastics in the environment are posing an ever-increasing ecological threat. In this study, a total of 97 bacteria were isolated from macroplastic debris collected from the coastal environments of Andaman Island. The isolates were screened for LDPE degradation potential and were identified based on phenotypic, biochemical, and molecular characterization. 16S rDNA-based identification revealed that three-three isolates of each belong to the genus Oceanimonas and Vibrio , two were closely related to the genus Paenibacillus whereas, one-one was associated with the genus Shewanella, Rheinheimera, and Bacillus , respectively. A bacterial consortium was formulated using the top four isolates based on their individual LDPE degradation potentials. A significant increase (p < 0.05) in the mean LDPE degradation (47.07 ± 6.67% weight-loss) and change in thickness was observed after 120 days of incubation. FTIR spectrum, 13C NMR, and TG-DSC analyses demonstrated changes in the LDPE sheets' functional groups, crystallinity, and in thermal properties after 120 days of incubation. The SEM and AFM images confirmed bacterial attachments, an increase in surface roughness and deformities on LDPE sheets. Sandy beaches represent environmental compartments particularly vulnerable to litter pollution, and they reflect the magnitude of pollution of adjacent compartments: water and coastal areas. The substitution of conventional polymers by biodegradable materials is generally considered as an alternative for reducing environmental accumulation of plastic debris. The present study is aimed to investigate the degradation of poly(lactic acid), poly(ε-caprolactone), poly(butylenesuccinate adipate) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) buried in sand for 267 days, simulating them as beach litter. The analysed polyesters showed different degradation mechanisms and kinetics. PLA is mainly subjected to weathering by physical aging; after an initial faster degradation of the amorphous phase, PCL showed a decrease of its degradation rate; similarly to PCL, the degradation of PBSA started from the amorphous phase; PHB is clearly subjected to biological degradation. The degradation trend of the investigated materials in sand decreased in the order PHB > PBSA > PCL > PLA. PLA, PCL and PBSA did not undergo complete degradation in sand during the testing time. While the use of biodegradable polymers is recognized as a global strategy to minimize plastic pollution, the technical standards (TS) used to attest their biodegradability may not be in compliance with most environmental parameters observed aquatic ecosystems. Indeed, through a careful assessment of the TS currently in use, this study evidenced that these guidelines cover only a fraction of the biogeochemical parameters seen in nature and largely disregard those that occur in the deep-sea. Thus, these TS may not be able to ensure the degradation of such polymers in natural environments, where microbial activity, pH, temperature, salinity, UV radiation and pressure are highly variable. This raises environmental concern, since relevant parcel of plastic ends up in the oceans reaching deep zones. Therefore, there is an urgent need to revise these TS, which must consider the actual fate of most plastic debris and include assessments under the challenging conditions found at these types of environment, alongside microplastic formation and ecotoxicology effects. Moreover, the next generation of biodegradability tests must be designed to enable a cost-effective implementation and incorporate accurate analytical techniques to assess polymer transformation. • N-doped microporous carbon was newly prepared using waste PET plastic bottles. • A simple and efficient one-pot synthesis method was successfully applied. • PET-derived N-doped microporous carbon is promising for CO 2 capture. • Disposal of waste PET plastics and mitigation of CO 2 emission can be achieved simultaneously. Valorization of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic into microporous carbon with N-doping treatment was successfully performed in a one-pot synthesis and the N-doped microporous carbon was used for CO 2 capture, which can mitigate plastic pollution and climate change simultaneously. The PET-derived microporous carbon developed by KOH activation and urea treatment in a one-pot synthesis at 700 °C exhibited the highest CO 2 adsorption uptake of 6.23 mmol g−1 at 0 °C and 4.58 mmol g−1 at 25 °C (1 atm). The Langmuir and pseudo second-order models displayed well-fitting relationships with equilibrium and kinetic experimental data obtained in this study. The N-doped microporous carbon showed high CO 2 selectivity over N 2 , implying that it is feasible for treating flue gases (10% CO 2 and 90% N 2) at 50 °C. In addition, the CO 2 uptake was not only affected by micropores but also related with nitrogen and oxygen functional groups. Compared to the porous carbon prepared by two-pot synthesis where KOH activation and urea treatment were conducted separately, the porous carbon prepared by one-pot synthesis had higher oxygen contents and higher CO 2 adsorption uptake. All of findings implied that the N-doped microporous carbon was successfully developed from waste PET plastic for capturing CO 2 and can play a promising role in both sustainable waste management and environmental protection. Plastic residues could accumulate in soils as a consequence of using plastic mulching, which results in a serious environmental concern for agroecosystems. However, the effects of residues from traditional and biodegradable plastic films on the soil-plant system are not well studied. In this study, we used a controlled pot experiment to investigate the effects of macro- and micro- sized residues of low-density polyethylene and biodegradable plastic mulch films on the rhizosphere bacterial communities, rhizosphere volatile profiles and soil chemical properties. Interestingly, we identified significant effects of biodegradable plastic residues on the rhizosphere bacterial communities and on the blend of volatiles emitted in the rhizosphere. For example, in treatments with biodegradable plastics, bacteria genera like Bacillus and Variovorax were present in higher relative abundances and volatile compounds like dodecanal were exclusively produced in treatment with biodegradable microplastics. Furthermore, significant differences in soil pH, electrical conductivity and C:N ratio were observed across treatments. Our study provides evidence for both biotic and abiotic impacts of plastic residues on the soil-plant system, suggesting the urgent need for more research examining their environmental impacts on agroecosystems. The toxicity caused by microplastics (MPs) in organisms living in freshwater environments remains little explored. Little is known about the consequences of the exposure to these pollutants on the health of amphibians. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that the exposure of Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles to microplastic polyethylene (PE MP) causes histopathological damage to their liver. Data collected after seven days of exposure to MPs (60 mg/L) have shown that pollutant bioaccumulation in tadpoles' liver was correlated to different histopathological changes (blood vessel dilation, infiltration, congestion, hydropic degeneration, hypertrophy and hyperplasia), which showed the histopathotoxicity of MPs. Furthermore, we observed changes in hepatocyte nuclei size (area and diameter), volume and shape induced by the exposure to PE MPs, a fact that evidenced the cytotoxic effect of these pollutants. To the best of our knowledge, the current study is the first to report the histopathotoxicity of PE MPs in representatives of the amphibian group, and it contributes to improving knowledge about these pollutants and how they may affect the health of these animals. • E-Plastics were recovered from waste liquid display screens (LCDs). • The obtained e-plastics were compositionally and elementally analysed. • ABS was partially used and assessed as a recycled aggregate (RA) in cement mortar. • The effect of ABS in the properties of cement mortar was investigated. • The 7.5% and 10% replacement by e-plastics favoured the strength of the specimens. In this study we investigated the physical and mechanical properties of cement mortars, partially replaced with plastic (recycled plastic aggregate, RPA) recovered from WEEE (namely, "e-plastics"). The plastic housing of 14 LCD screens was sampled and, subsequently, compositionally and elementally analysed. Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), being the most commonly found polymer in WEEE, was used as aggregate in the cement mortar. The replacement percentages (RPs) used were 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 12.5%, while the water to cement (w/c) ratio was maintained constant at 0.5 in all tests. The basic properties (e.g. compressive strength (CS), modulus of elasticity (MoE), density (ρ), porosity (Φ) and water absorption (WA)) of the created specimens were investigated. The obtained results, for all RPs, (especially those of 7.5% and 10%) exhibited an increase in the CS of the specimens by 15.4% and 7.8%, respectively, with the MoE decreased in both cases by 18.1% and 23.8%, respectively. The rest of the examined specimens' physical properties measured (ρ, Φ, and WA) indicated, also, greater strength but lower ductility than the reference (standard) specimen. Concluding, the use of recovered plastics from WEEE as recycled aggregates (RAs) in cement could potentially be proved a useful downcycling alternative for waste plastics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
