Caregiving burden proves to be a risk factor of anxiety disorders and anxiety affection. The current study investigates how an endogenous personality dimension – neuroticism – moderates the association between caregiving burden and anxiety affection. Between 2015 and 2017, the study deployed a cross-sectional survey of 674 (response rate = 89%) older adults who were hospitalized for dementia at two hospitals. From all primary caregivers of these patients, 661 agreed to participate in the survey which yielded 661 matched dyads as the final sample. Caregiving burden, neuroticism, and anxiety affection were each measured by established assessment instruments. We employed multivariate OLS regression to test the moderator and regressor effects. We found that care burden is a significant risk factor of higher levels of anxiety affection (β =.17, p <.001), and accounts for 4.6% of the variance in anxiety. Neurotic personality is also significantly associated with a greater level of anxiety (β =.26, p <.001). Neurotic personality moderates the association between anxiety and care burden (β =.24, p <.001). Our findings suggest that social and healthcare workers should assess caregiver personality and burden as well as provide support, resources, and coping strategies to those with neurotic personality traits or high care burden in an effort to reduce anxiety among caregivers. This study investigates older people's preferences for social care in rural and urban China. The data come from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) which collected information from a nationally representative sample of 10,682 Chinese older people aged 60 and over in 2014. Guided by the ecological model of aging, multilevel logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the factors associated with preferred care arrangements. We found that older people in urban China are more likely than those in rural China to accept care home services or prefer government-provided care. Educational qualifications and the number of surviving children strongly and consistently predict older people's preferences for formal care in both rural and urban China. Proximity to care home facilities and higher income are associated with an increase in the willingness to live in a care home in urban China, but they are not significant predictors of preferences for formal care in rural China. We argue that a one-size-fits-all social care policy may not be well-received in the Chinese older population. The Aging Semantic Differential (ASD) is the most widely used instrument to measure young people’s attitudes towards older adults. This study translated the ASD to Mandarin and examined its psychometric properties. The Mandarin-ASD contains three latent factors (Personality and Mental Health, Societal Participation, and Physical) that have high internal reliability and reasonable discriminate validity. Social work researchers, practitioners and allied professionals may utilize the ASD-Mandarin instrument to measure young people’s attitudes towards older adults in China.
