The observed variations in intense geomagnetic flux lobes have a significant impact on regional geomagnetic fields, and produce unique geomagnetic characteristics. To investigate the time‐dependent effect of the Siberian flux lobe on the geomagnetic field in East Asia, we reconstructed a stacked full‐vector paleomagnetic secular variation record (since 2000 BCE) from three sediment cores collected in the Bohai Sea, China. Age models of the studied cores were established through a combination of radiocarbon 14C dating and inter‐profile correlation of mass‐normalized magnetic susceptibility. Rock magnetic results indicate that fine‐grained magnetite is the primary remanent carrier. We found that the paleomagnetic field records in the Bohai Sea correspond more closely with those from the middle latitudes, rather than the low latitudes. This was primarily attributed to the variation of the Siberian flux lobe. This study provides a better understanding of the contrasting patterns of regional geomagnetic fields in East Asia, and emphasizes the significant role played by the Siberian flux intensity lobe in shaping their formation. The anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) is an important magnetic parameter for quantifying the concentration of "fine", mostly sub‐micron ferrimagnetic particles in rocks and sediments. A sound understanding of ARM carriers is needed to interpret magnetic and environmental information in sedimentary archives. This is often not achieved for marine sediments, which routinely contain several magnetic mineral components. Here, we analyze marine sediment records over different timescales for four sediment cores from the Eastern Pacific Ocean (Hole 1218A), the Antarctic margin (core P4‐1), the Arctic Ocean (core ARC5‐ICE4), and the South China Sea (core L07), using coercivity spectra analyses of ARM, first‐order reversal curve principal component analysis (FORC‐PCA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and unmixing of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) curves. By combining rock magnetic and TEM results, we find that the ARM is mainly carried by non‐interacting single domain (SD) biogenic magnetite (magnetofossils) in the studied sediments over all timescales. Low‐coercivity magnetic particles (detrital and fine‐grained extracellular magnetite) also contribute to the bulk ARM. Variable magnetofossil chain structures are detected and have a significant influence on ARM data interpretation. Quantitative FORC‐PCA endmember analyses based on quantile contours and coercivity distributions provide valuable information on the nature of endmembers and improve ARM data interpretation. We provide an integrated strategy to help reduce interpretational ambiguities related to ARM in future studies. To interpret ARM signals robustly, we must understand the sedimentary magnetic minerals that control ARM changes. However, the origin of ARM changes in marine sediments is not well understood. Here, we analyze marine sediment records from the Eastern Pacific Ocean, the Antarctic margin, the Arctic Ocean, and the South China Sea to identify the carriers of ARM in the respective sediments. Our results indicate that all of the sediments contain abundant remains of magnetotactic bacteria (known as magnetofossils). Magnetofossil abundance variations dominate ARM on both 10,000 to million‐year timescales. Part of the bulk ARM is also contributed by other low‐coercivity magnetite particles. Furthermore, ARM is influenced significantly by magnetofossil chain structure variations. Our results have important implications for future studies involving use of ARM in magnetofossil‐rich sediments. Continuous paleosecular variations reconstructed from sedimentary archives have remarkably deepened our insights into the dynamics of the Earth's magnetic field as well as the chronological purpose. Nevertheless, to construct reliable sedimentary paleomagnetic records in diagenetic reducing sediments is challenging generally due to the pervasive magnetic mineral diagenesis. The relict magnetic minerals are residuals after diagenesis and probably able to record a depositional remanent magnetization, thus it is worthy to explore their paleomagnetic potentials. For this study, two Black Sea sediment cores covering the past 8 ka were subjected to mineralogical and paleo‐ and rock magnetic analyses. Paramagnetic pyrite framboids are pervasive in the studied sediments deposited under anoxic bottom water conditions in the Black Sea. In addition, relict magnetic minerals of ferrous hemoilmenite, Fe‐Mn and Fe‐Cr spinels, and magnetite inclusions are also present in the studied cores. Compared to the previous published paleomagnetic results from the same cores over the last glacial period (20–30 ka) which are dominated by detrital (titano‐)magnetite particles, the studied relict magnetic mineral samples exhibit a similar behavior in recording the depositional remanent magnetization. Furthermore, the obtained paleosecular variations spanning the past 8 ka reproduce the high intensity patterns observed in the regional archeomagnetic and volcanic datasets. Thus, the successful reconstruction of paleomagnetic secular variations from the anoxic Black Sea sediments greatly extend the application of paleomagnetism in sediments deposited in water with a reducing sub‐surface environments from where paleomagnetic data are generally sparse. The geomagnetic field signal may be biased if the magnetic minerals are subsequently altered because of changes in bottom water redox conditions. To attest this novel idea, we systematically investigated sediments form the Black Sea under strong anoxic bottom water conditions. Our results demonstrate that the relict magnetic minerals survived in the Black Sea sediments covering the past eight thousand years. By comparison with detrital (titano‐)magnetite samples, we found that relict magnetic mineral samples have similar behavior in recording the geomagnetic field. Moreover, the geomagnetic field variations reconstructed from the Black Sea sediments are comparable with other validated regional datasets for the past eight thousand years. Therefore, our new study significantly extends the application of paleomagnetic methods in a wider range of sedimentary redox conditions. Hematite carries magnetic signals of interest in tectonic, paleoclimatic, paleomagnetic, and planetary studies. First‐order reversal curve (FORC) diagrams have become an important tool for assessing the domain state of, and magnetostatic interactions among, magnetic particles in such studies. We present here FORC diagrams for diverse hematite samples, which provide a catalog for comparison with other studies and explain key features observed for hematite. Ridge‐type signatures typical of uniaxial single‐domain particle assemblages and "kidney‐shaped" FORC signatures, and combinations of these responses, occur commonly in natural and synthetic hematite. Asymmetric features that arise from the triaxial basal plane anisotropy of hematite contribute to vertical spreading in kidney‐shaped FORC distributions and are intrinsic responses even for magnetostatically noninteracting particles. The dominant FORC distribution type in a sample (ridge, kidney‐shaped, or mixture) depends on the balance between uniaxial/triaxial switching. The identified signals explain magnetization switching and anisotropy features that are intrinsic to the magnetic properties of hematite and other materials with multiaxial magnetic anisotropy. The carbonate clumped isotope (Δ47) thermometer has been widely used for paleoclimatic and paleo‐elevation reconstructions in sedimentary basins. Its reliable use requires that carbonates are free from later diagenetic alteration and retain their depositional Δ47 compositions, which is not always the case during the burial history of a basin. Therefore, identifying the alteration mechanisms that occurred during burial is essential for the correct interpretation of Δ47 signatures. In this study, we used the Δ47 thermometer to investigate possible carbonate alteration during burial of the Fenghuoshan Group (FHSG) in the Hoh Xil Basin, northern Tibetan Plateau, China. The Δ47 temperatures [T(Δ47)] of 30 carbonate samples through the ∼4.5 km thickness of the FHSG range from 51 to 132°C and exceed the surface temperature, implying the effects of thermal alteration on FHSG carbonates. The T(Δ47) values combined with the water‐rock exchange model, indicating that the alteration occurred under closed burial conditions at low water:rock ratios. The solid‐state reordering model fails to predict the Δ47 values, even with a modified time‐temperature history. In contrast, most measured Δ47 values are in agreement with predictions from recrystallization models. Therefore, the proposed alteration scenario is that FHSG carbonates underwent progressive microscale recrystallization during deep burial and subsequent exhumation, during which process recrystallized carbonate equilibrated with ambient burial temperature and therefore modified Δ47 values. This study highlights the potential of Δ47 thermometry and related models for evaluating the burial history and diagenesis of carbonates in sedimentary basins. Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), sensitive to redox status, leave fossil bacterial magnetite (magnetofossils) in sediments. The relative contents of cuboctahedral, elongated prismatic, and bullet‐shaped magnetofossils archive changes in redox conditions, which indicate paleoenvironmental variations. The Eocene‐Oligocene transition (EOT) is a turning point in the Cenozoic climate evolution from greenhouse to icehouse. Global cooling, Antarctic glaciation, and/or a new tectonic structure modified the global ocean and atmosphere circulation mode. In the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean (EEPO), the organic matter and aeolian supply, which are important for the proliferation of MTB, did not vary synchronously. Here, we study the magnetic particles and environmental magnetism characteristics of samples from EEPO to test the hypothesis that magnetofossil assemblages respond to the dramatic paleoclimatic changes across the EOT. Results show that the abundances of all kinds of magnetic particles are significantly decreased with the reduction of aeolian supply after the EOT. However, the relative abundance of magnetofossils and the proportion of bullet‐shaped ones both increased. Simultaneously, organic matter input was enhanced as indicated by (a) similar productivity but decreased organic carbon consumption and (b) the increased mass accumulation rates of total organic carbon after the EOT. The enhanced organic matter flux increased redox gradient in pelagic sediment, which together with sufficient iron from aeolian particles, supported the metabolism of MTB, especially those synthesizing bullet‐shaped magnetofossils. Therefore, the magnetofossils in the EEPO vary synchronously with the evolution of paleoenvironment before and after the EOT, which thus supports the use of magnetofossil as an effective proxy archiving paleoenvironment. The Eocene‐Oligocene transition (EOT) is a milestone of the Cenozoic global climate evolution, switching from greenhouse to icehouse climate. The redox conditions in pelagic sediments should be significantly changed across the EOT. We studied the magnetofossils from the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean during this period to test their response to the significant global climate change. After the EOT, the relative abundance of magnetofossils and the proportion of anisotropic ones both increased. Simultaneously, organic matter flux to pelagic sediments was enhanced. Organic carbon brought reducing conditions to the sediments, which is in favor of the MTB producing anisotropic magnetofossils. This study supports that the assemblage patterns of magnetofossils faithfully document the environmental change during the EOT, contributing to the hypothesis considering magnetofossils as a proxy for paleoenvironment. North Pacific Ocean sediments are important archives of geomagnetic field and paleoenvironmental evolutions, yet late Quaternary sedimentary sequences in the North Pacific Ocean are less explored because of generally low sedimentation rates and the challenge of dating sediments deposited below the calcite compensation depth. Core NP02 sediments from the North Pacific Ocean contain three visible tephra layers, which are identified as the To‐Of, Spfa‐1, and Kt‐3 tephra, respectively. An age model for core NP02 is established based on tephra correlation and one radiocarbon date, which gives a mean sedimentation rate of ∼11.6 cm/kyr. Magnetic analyses suggest the dominance of two remanence carriers; detrital vortex state and biogenic single domain magnetite. Variable depth offsets between the relative paleointensity (RPI) signals carried by the two remanence carriers adds a negligible age error (<0.5 kyr) to the core NP02 RPI record. Pronounced RPI amplitude variations are observed, and the Rockall and Laschamp excursions are identified in the core NP02 RPI record based on the age model. The fidelity of the core NP02 RPI record is further verified by comparison with other RPI stacks and records, and we demonstrate that the RPI variations can assist in chronology refinement. Therefore, dating is a big problem for late Quaternary sedimentary cores. In this study, core NP02 sediments from the North Pacific Ocean are studied. Magnetic analyses suggest that both small biogenic and relatively large detrital magnetite record geomagnetic information, and the two groups of magnetite deposit at about the same time. Based on the age model, core NP02 RPI record preserves the Rockall and Laschamp excursions, and the RPI pattern is consistent with other RPI stacks and records, which verifies core NP02 RPI fidelity. Therefore, we demonstrate that RPI variations is a promising dating tool for North Pacific Ocean sediments. Although sea‐level is the primary control over sedimentary architectures on continental shelves, deciphering such changes is still challenging, except for the easily recognized transgression‐regression cycles. This problem becomes more prominent in sedimentary units with relatively homogenous and fine‐grained lithologies that have been deposited over short periods. Here, we focus on a dominantly clayey silt section of a sediment core from the outer shelf of the East China Sea. Detailed rock magnetic and electron microscopy analyses indicate that authigenic greigite (Fe3S4) is the major magnetic component in an almost 4‐m‐thick interval that was deposited during the late Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3, while pyrite (FeS2) is enriched in the underlying middle MIS 3 sediments. According to microfossil analyses, the identified greigite formed in a prodelta setting that was affected by cold coastal currents after the middle MIS 3, when the Taiwan Warm Current and its associated upwelling were prevailing within a middle‐outer shelf setting favorable for pyrite formation. Large‐amplitude regression occurred subsequently during the MIS 2, limiting sulfate supply and favoring the greigite preservation. Our results, along with the previous studies, demonstrate that both the material and environmental conditions that are crucial to iron sulfide survival have been largely controlled by sea‐level change. Moreover, we make a preliminary proposition that a water depth range of 30–60 m is more likely to lead to the enrichment of greigite on continental shelves. We, therefore, provide a promising avenue for the assessment of sea‐level change on continental shelves over orbital and even suborbital timescales. There are two distinctly different views on Quaternary sedimentation rates in the central Arctic Ocean, namely, that they were on cm/kyr or on mm/kyr scales, largely as a result of divergent interpretations of magnetic reversal stratigraphy. This study provides new evidence to help resolve this controversy in the form of an almost 1‐m‐thick negative polarity interval located at ~1.15 m below the seafloor in a 4.15‐m‐long sediment core from the Lomonosov Ridge, central Arctic Ocean. This thick polarity anomaly was first revealed through alternating field demagnetization of natural remanent magnetization on u‐channel samples. It was subsequently confirmed to be an authentic signal of a syndepositional geomagnetic field by integrating detailed rock magnetic studies, transmission electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analyses of magnetic extracts, and both alternating field and thermal demagnetization of discrete paleomagnetic samples. Here we conclude that it is more reasonable to interpret the reversed interval as a record of the Matuyama Chron rather than a Brunhes‐aged excursion, which yields mean sedimentation rates of ~1.5 mm/kyr and ~0.5 mm/kyr in the Brunhes and Matuyama Chrons, respectively. These estimates are remarkably lower than assumed in most recent studies, but in good agreement with both previous magnetostratigraphic and recent geochemical studies relative to the decay of Be and U‐series isotopes, which might indicate "sediment‐starved" environments at least in some parts of this region. Overall, our results not only imply that chronostratigraphy in the central Arctic Ocean remains open to debate but also warrant further investigations in this microfossil‐barren region. We investigated sea‐surface magnetic anomaly data for the past 5 Myr in the slow‐to‐intermediate spreading South Atlantic Ridge. After error analysis and signal processes, the sea surface magnetic anomaly profiles were downward continued to 1.5 km below sea level, and then the distance from spreading axis was converted to time by matching the observed anomalies with forward models of known polarity reversals. The stacked anomaly profiles from South Atlantic Ridge exhibit short‐wavelength wiggles superimposed on the first‐order variations of magnetic anomalies. The stacked anomaly profiles were first compared with commonly used geomagnetic palaeointensity data synthesized from sedimentary relative intensity records in the past and were further correlated with other available magnetic profiles derived from Central Indian Ridge, East Pacific Rise, and Pacific‐Antarctic Ridge. We found that short wavelength variations in the South Atlantic Ridge can be ascribed to geomagnetic intensity variations from excursions or short polarity events. Spectral analysis of marine magnetic anomalies records reveals that there is no obvious dominant periodicity for the geomagnetic field behavior during the past 5 Myr. Abstract: Eolian dust is a major terrigenous component in North Pacific Ocean pelagic sediments and is an important recorder of Asian terrestrial environmental evolution and Northern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation. In order to extract and quantify wind‐borne mineral signals and develop a reliable eolian dust proxy for pelagic sediments, we investigated sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 885A, North Pacific Ocean, by integrating results from environmental magnetism, transmission electron microscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Our results indicate that ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic minerals coexist in the sediments. The former includes biogenic magnetite, nano‐sized single domain (titano) magnetite inclusions embedded in silicate hosts, submicron vortex state magnetite, and ultrafine superparamagnetic maghemite. The latter includes hematite and goethite. Our results indicate that magnetic properties can be used to determine an overall trend of increased eolian dust inputs, with additional significant influence from biogenic and volcanogenic components. In contrast, a newly proposed parameter RelHm+Gt (combined hematite and goethite concentration) obtained from DRS measurements extracts precisely the eolian signal and precludes other components. Our DRS results indicate that hematite/goethite and siliceous fractions deposited at Hole 885A were jointly delivered to the North Pacific Ocean from Asian dust sources. Therefore, we suggest that RelHm+Gt is a reliable eolian dust proxy for pelagic sediments in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
