The steady behaviour of a rarefied gas around a rotating sphere is studied numerically on the basis of the linearised ellipsoidal statistical model of the Boltzmann equation, also known as the ES model, and the Maxwell diffuse–specular boundary condition. It is demonstrated numerically that the normal derivative of the circumferential component of the flow velocity and that of the heat flux diverge on the boundary with a rate $s^{-1/2}$ , where $s$ is the normal distance from the boundary. Further, it is demonstrated that the diverging term is proportional to the magnitude of the jump discontinuity of the velocity distribution function on the boundary, which originates from the mismatch of the incoming and outgoing data on the boundary. The moment of force exerted on the sphere is also obtained for a wide range of the Knudsen number and for various values of the accommodation coefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, an analytical investigation of two-dimensional conventional Burnett equations has been undertaken for gaseous flow through a long microchannel. The analytical solution is obtained by using perturbation analysis around the classical Navier-Stokes solution with appropriate boundary conditions. The perturbation expansion is employed with the smallness parameter ϵ, taken as the ratio of height to length of the microchannel. The solution for pressure is obtained by solving the cross-stream momentum equation while the velocity distribution is obtained from the streamwise momentum equation. The resulting ordinary differential equations in pressure and velocity are third-order and second-order, respectively. The required boundary conditions for pressure are obtained from direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) data. The obtained analytical solution matches the available DSMC solution well. Measurements of the thermal creep flow through a single rectangular microchannel connected to two tanks maintained initially at the same pressure, but at different temperatures, are carried out for five noble gas species, over a large range of pressure and for two temperature differences between the tanks. The time-dependent pressure variations in both cold and hot tanks are investigated, and the temperature-driven (thermal creep) mass flow rate between two tanks is calculated from these data for the rarefaction parameter ranging from the transitional to slip flow regime. The measured mass flow rate is compared with the numerical solution of the S-model kinetic equation, and they show good agreement. A novel approximate expression to calculate the temperature-driven mass flow rate in the transitional and slip flow regimes is proposed. This expression provides results in good agreement with the measured values of the mass flow rate. In the slip flow regime, the thermal slip coefficient is calculated by employing the previously reported methodology, and the influence of the nature of the gas on this coefficient is investigated. The measured values of the thermal slip coefficient agree well with the values available in the literature, indicating that this coefficient is independent of the shape of a channel. We theoretically investigate the lift force on spherical nanoparticles in a shear flow of a dilute gas, wherein the non-rigid-body collision between the particle and the gas molecules is considered. The analytical formula of the lift force is derived based on the gas kinetic theory. In the limit of rigid-body collision, the formula is consistent with the theoretical results in the literature (Liu & Bogy, Phys. Fluids, vol. 20, 2008, 107102), which predicts that the lift force is in the opposite direction to the fluid velocity gradient (negative lift force). However, by taking into account gas-particle intermolecular interactions, the direction of the lift force on the nanoparticle is found to be dependent on temperature, i.e. both positive and negative lift forces exist in a certain temperature range. An explanation for the direction change of the lift force is given based on the analysis of the scattering angle under non-rigid-body particle- molecule collisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A kinetic model of the Boltzmann equation for non-vibrating polyatomic gases is proposed, based on the Rykov model for diatomic gases. We adopt two velocity distribution functions (VDFs) to describe the system state; inelastic collisions are the same as in the Rykov model, but elastic collisions are modelled by the Boltzmann collision operator (BCO) for monatomic gases, so that the overall kinetic model equation reduces to the Boltzmann equation for monatomic gases in the limit of no translational--rotational energy exchange. The free parameters in the model are determined by comparing the transport coefficients, obtained by a Chapman--Enskog expansion, to values from experiment and kinetic theory. The kinetic model equations are solved numerically using the fast spectral method for elastic collision operators and the discrete velocity method for inelastic ones. The numerical results for normal shock waves and planar Fourier/Couette flows are in good agreement with both conventional direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) results and experimental data. Poiseuille and thermal creep flows of polyatomic gases between two parallel plates are also investigated. Finally, we find that the spectra of both spontaneous and coherent Rayleigh--Brillouin scattering (RBS) compare well with DSMC results, and the computational speed of our model is approximately 300 times faster. Compared to the Rykov model, our model greatly improves prediction accuracy, and reveals the significant influence of molecular models. In microducts deviation from continuum flow behaviour of a gas increases with rarefaction. When using Navier–Stokes equations to calculate a flow under slightly and moderately rarefied conditions, slip boundary conditions are used which in turn refer to the tangential momentum accommodation coefficient (TMAC). Here we demonstrate that, in the so-called slip and transition regime, the flow in microducts can be reliably described by a consistently non-empirical model without considering the TMAC. We obtain this equation by superposition of convective transport and Fickian diffusion using two-dimensional solutions of Navier–Stokes equations and a description for the Knudsen diffusion coefficient as derived from kinetic theory respectively. For a wide variety of measurement series found in the literature the calculation predicts the data accurately. Surprisingly only size of the duct, temperature, gas properties and inlet and outlet pressure are necessary to calculate the resulting mass flow by means of a single algebraic equation. From this, and taking the discrepancies of the TMAC concerning surface roughness and nature of the gases into account, we could conclude that neither the diffusive proportions nor the total mass flow rates are influenced by surface topology and chemistry at Knudsen numbers below unity. Compared to the tube geometry, the model slightly underestimates the flow rate in rectangular channels when rarefaction increases. Likewise, the dimensionless mass flow rate and the diffusive proportion of the total flow are distinctly higher in a tube. Thus the cross-sectional geometry has a significant influence on the transport mechanisms under rarefied conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
