Fish involved in telemetry studies are usually handled, anaesthetized, and subjected to internal tag implantation, all of which have the potential to disrupt the fish's physiology, migratory patterns, food‐seeking behavior, growth, and survival. As fish tagging is a widespread standard method in aquaculture, it is crucial to gain a better understanding of the short‐ and long‐term effects on various aspects of fish welfare. The experimental outcomes of each phase of the surgical process and how it affects the fish's ability to recover during the post‐tagging period, particularly in small salmonids, are poorly understood. Thus, it is essential to measure the extent of these adverse effects to precisely extrapolate differences in surgical intervention for tagged fish compared to their unmanipulated counterparts. In our study, we explored the post‐tagging impacts on wild‐captured brown trout (Salmo trutta) (1+) juveniles. We examined the time effect on fish recovery after each phase of the surgical procedure, which included anaesthetized fish, followed by surgery with/without internal tagging, within the first 2 and 25 h post‐surgery. Common blood parameters (glucose levels and haematocrit) and endpoints related to swimming behavior, including fish movement, direction, and social distancing aspects, were studied. The findings of the study indicated no significant changes in glucose and haematocrit levels over the observational period. Fish subjected to anesthesia and tagging procedures exhibited a significant decrease in swimming activity, recovering to baseline levels 1 h after anesthesia and 24 h after surgical (tagging) procedures in recirculating aquaculture systems. Tagged fish showed less social proximity than non‐tagged fish in the first 2 h post‐surgery. A significant effect size was observed between nonsurgical (anesthesia) and surgical (non‐tagged/tagged) groups, highlighting a more pronounced impact associated with surgical tag interventions. Our data indicate that the magnitude of behavioral response was significantly influenced by tag weight (~1.4% body/tag weight ratio in water) among manipulated fish groups. Consequently, our study reveals that wild‐captured S. trutta juveniles, tagged with commercially available low‐weight acoustic tags (V6, 69 kHz), experienced negative effects on swimming performance. In surgical studies, acknowledging potential influences is crucial for accurately inferring fish physiological and behavioral status. Emphasizing fish recovery potential in both short‐ and long‐term periods is essential for quantifying tagging effects. Future research should prioritize exploring alternative tagging technologies and refining methodologies, with a particular focus on assessing telemetry's impact on socioeconomically relevant small salmonids. The effects of increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) on the Earth's temperature have been known since the end of the 19th century. It was long believed that the oceans' buffering capacity would counteract any effects of dissolved CO2 in marine environments, but during recent decades, many studies have reported detrimental effects of ocean acidification on aquatic organisms. The most prominent effects can be found within the field of behavioural ecology, e.g., complete reversal of predator avoidance behaviour in CO2‐exposed coral reef fish. Some of the studies have been very influential, receiving hundreds of citations over recent years. The results have also been conveyed to policymakers and publicized in prominent media outlets for the general public. Those extreme effects of ocean acidification on fish behaviour have, however, spurred controversy, given that more than a century of research suggests that there are few or no negative effects of elevated CO2 on fish physiology. This is due to sophisticated acid–base regulatory mechanisms that should enable their resilience to near‐future increases in CO2. In addition, an extreme "decline effect" has recently been shown in the literature regarding ocean acidification and fish behaviour, and independent research groups have been unable to replicate some of the most profound effects. Here, the author presents a brief historical overview on the effects of elevated CO2 and ocean acidification on fishes. This historical recap is warranted because earlier work, prior to a recent (c. 10 year) explosion in interest, is often overlooked in today's ocean acidification studies, despite its value to the field. Based on the historical data and the current knowledge status, the author suggests future strategies with the aim to improve research rigour and clarify the understanding of the effects of ocean acidification on fishes. Fish skin is the first barrier against external invasion, and also an important interface for communication between males and females during reproduction. Nonetheless, sexual dimorphism in the physiology of fish skins is still poorly understood. Herein, transcriptomes of skin were comparatively analysed between males and females in spinyhead croaker, Collichthys lucidus. Totally, 170 differentially expressed genes (DEG) were detected, including 79 female‐biased genes and 91 male‐biased genes. Gene ontology (GO) annotation items of the DEGs were mainly enriched in biological process items (86.2%), including regulation of biological processes, responses to chemical and biological stimuli, transport and secretion, movement, immune response, tissue development, etc. In KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway enrichment analysis, the male‐biased genes were enriched in pathways including those related to immunity such as the TNF signalling pathway and IL‐17 signalling pathway, whereas the female‐biased genes were enriched in pathways including those related to female steroids such as ovarian steroidogenesis and oestrogen signalling pathway. In addition, odf3 was found to be a male‐specific expression gene, being a candidate marker for phenotypic sex. Thus, the sexual difference in gene expression in fish skin in spawning season was uncovered by transcriptome analysis for the first time, providing new insights into sexual dimorphism in the physiology and functions of fish skin. Temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD) occurs when the temperature during development affects gonad determination. Historically, most work on TSD in fishes was conducted under constant temperatures, yet daily fluctuating temperatures can significantly alter fish physiology and life history. Thus, we subjected the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia (a TSD species), to 28, 28 ± 2 and 28 ± 4°C (a high, masculinizing temperature) and quantified sex ratios and length. We found that the percentage of females increased by 60%–70% when the fish were exposed to daily fluctuating temperatures (from 10% to 16% and 17% under fluctuations). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rising water temperatures across aquatic habitats, in the current global climate change scenario, can directly affect metabolism and food intake in fish species. This can potentially alter their physiological, behavioral, and shoaling properties. In the current study, we examined the effects of high temperatures on metabolism, foraging, and shoaling in tropical fish. Mixed-species (comprising flying barbs, zebrafish, and gambusia) and single-species (flying barbs and zebrafish) shoals were conditioned for 45 days to three kinds of temperature regimes: the current temperature regime (CTR), in which shoals were maintained at water temperature of 24°C (i.e., the current mean temperature of their habitat), the predicted temperature regime (PTR) at 31°C (i.e., simulating conditions projected for their habitat in 2100), and the dynamic temperature regime (DTR), which experienced daily temperature fluctuations between 24 and 31°C (i.e., resembling rapid temperature changes expected in their natural environments). We found species-specific responses to these temperature regimes. Flying barbs exhibited significantly lower body weight at PTR but maintained consistent muscle glycogen content across all temperature regimes. In contrast, zebrafish and gambusia displayed significantly elevated muscle glycogen content at PTR, with similar body weights across all three temperature regimes. Cohesion within flying barb shoals and cohesion/polarization in mixed-species shoals decreased significantly at PTR. Shoals exposed to DTR exhibited intermediate characteristics between those conditioned to CTR and PTR, suggesting that shoals may be less impacted by dynamic temperatures compared to prolonged high temperatures. Levels of dissolved oxygen in open ocean and coastal waters are decreasing (ocean deoxygenation), with poorly understood effects on marine megafauna. All of the more than 1000 species of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays) are obligate water breathers, with a variety of life-history strategies and oxygen requirements. This review demonstrates that although many elasmobranchs typically avoid hypoxic water, they also appear capable of withstanding mild to moderate hypoxia with changes in activity, ventilatory responses, alterations to circulatory and hematological parameters, and morphological alterations to gill structures. However, such strategies may be insufficient to withstand severe, progressive, or prolonged hypoxia or anoxia where anaerobic metabolic pathways may be used for limited periods. As water temperatures increase with climate warming, ectothermic elasmobranchs will exhibit elevated metabolic rates and are likely to be less able to tolerate the effects of even mild hypoxia associated with deoxygenation. As a result, sustained hypoxic conditions in warmer coastal or surface-pelagic waters are likely to lead to shifts in elasmobranch distributions. Mass mortalities of elasmobranchs linked directly to deoxygenation have only rarely been observed but are likely underreported. One key concern is how reductions in habitat volume as a result of expanding hypoxia resulting from deoxygenation will influence interactions between elasmobranchs and industrial fisheries. Catch per unit of effort of threatened pelagic sharks by longline fisheries, for instance, has been shown to be higher above oxygen minimum zones compared to adjacent, normoxic regions, and attributed to vertical habitat compression of sharks overlapping with increased fishing effort. How a compound stressor such as marine heatwaves alters vulnerability to deoxygenation remains an open question. With over a third of elasmobranch species listed as endangered, a priority for conservation and management now lies in understanding and mitigating ocean deoxygenation effects in addition to population declines already occurring from overfishing., (© 2024 The Author(s). Cold water pollution (CWP) is caused by releases of unseasonably cold water from large, thermally stratified dams. Rapid and prolonged decreases in water temperature can have depressive effects on the metabolism, growth and swimming performance of fish. However, it is unknown if reducing the rate of temperature decrease could mitigate these negative effects by allowing thermal acclimation/acclimatization to occur. This study investigated the rate of temperature decrease as a potential CWP mitigation strategy in juvenile Murray cod Maccullochella peelii. M. peelii were exposed to a gradual, intermediate or rapid temperature decrease from 24 to 14°C. Energetic costs, locomotor performance, growth and survival were measured to determine if the initial thermal regime affected the thermal acclimation capacity of M. peelii. Cold exposure had significant acute and lasting depressive effects regardless of the rate of temperature decrease, although M. peelii showed varying degrees of thermal compensation in swimming performance and metabolism after 8 weeks of exposure to low temperatures. The short‐term effects of CWP‐like reductions in temperature are significant, but over time M. peelii can offset some of the depressive effects of CWP through thermal plasticity. This study highlights the importance of understanding physiological responses of fish to inform management and conservation. We conclude that rate of water temperature decline cannot be used to mitigate the sublethal effects of CWP on juvenile M. peelii but may still be useful for managing the negative effects in other native Australian fish species. Leiarius marmoratus, a freshwater catfish from Pimelodidae family, shows great biological and commercial relevance because of its geographic distribution and adaptation to fish‐farm. The knowledge of the morphological characteristics of the digestive tract is fundamental to the understanding of fish physiology and nutrition, which helps in the planning of diets to provide better management and success in fish farming. Thus, this work described the morphology and histochemistry of the digestive tract of L. marmoratus adults. After euthanasia, the animals were dissected for analysis of the digestive tract. The oesophagus is a short and distensive organ with longitudinal folds that allow the passage of large food, e.g., other fishes. Oesophageal mucosa layer shows a stratified epithelium with goblet cells and club cells. The secretion of goblet cells is composed of neutral and acidic mucins that are anchored in the epithelium luminal face by epithelial cells fingerprint‐like microridges, lubricating the surface to facilitate the food sliding. Club cells have protein secretion that can be involved in alarm signals when epithelium is damaged and in immunological defence. The saccular stomach is highly distensible to store large food. Gastric mucosa layer is composed of epithelial cells with intense secretion of neutral mucin to protect against self‐digestion of gastric juice. Cardiac and fundic regions of stomach show well‐developed gastric glands composed of oxynticopeptic cells. These cells have numerous mitochondria, highlighting their intense activity in the synthesis of acid and enzymes. The intestine is divided into three regions: anterior, middle and posterior. Although it is a short tube, intestine shows longitudinal folds and microvilli of enterocytes to increase the contact surface. These folds are higher in the anterior region of the intestine, highlighting their function in digestion and absorption. Intestinal goblet cells have acidic and neutral mucins that lubricate the epithelium and aid in digestive processes. These cells increase in number towards aboral, and they are related to the protection and lubrication to expulsion of faecal bolus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge of thermal tolerance limits provides important clues to the capacity of a species to withstand acute and chronic thermal changes. Climate models predict the increase and intensification of events such as heat waves, therefore understanding the upper thermal limits that a species can tolerate has become of utmost importance. We measured the upper thermal tolerance of the endemic Magdalena river stingray Potamotrygon magdalenae acclimated to experimental conditions, and then used critical thermal methodology to find the temperature at which an organism reaches a critical endpoint where locomotory activity becomes disorganized and the animal loses its ability to escape from conditions that will promptly lead to its death. We also describe the behavioral response of individuals to acute thermal stress and infer the possible consequences of temperature increases in the habitats of P. magdalenae populations. There were no significant differences between sexes in temperature tolerance or behavior. The critical thermal maximum (39°C) was 5.9°C above the maximum recorded temperature for the study area. Although P. magdalenae was tolerant to high temperature and currently is not living at its upper thermal limit, its survival in Guarinocito Pond will be threatened if temperatures continue to increase, considering the warming scenarios predicted for tropical regions due to climate change, even including short-term climate phenomena such as El Niño., (© 2024 Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

Maternal nutrient provisioning occurs in most live-bearing chondrichthyan lineages. It is particularly conspicuous in the Myliobatiformes, whereby the endometrium secretes a nutrient-rich histotroph that is utilized by the developing embryo. Round rays (family: Urotrygonidae) are commonly caught as by-catch by shrimp trawl fisheries in the tropical eastern Pacific (TEP). However, little information on their life history and catch species composition exists for most round ray species, preventing the evaluation of the impact of fishing on their populations. The mean size at sexual maturity (DW 50 ), seasonal variation by maturity stages, and fecundity for two round ray species caught during shrimp trawl research cruises in the south-eastern Gulf of California (northern TEP) were estimated using a multi-model approach and inference for the first time, to determine the part of the population of each species that is being affected by shrimp trawling. Disc width (DW) ranged from 7.0 to 30.9 cm for the spotted round ray (Urobatis maculatus), and 7.2-33.5 cm for the thorny stingray (Urotrygon rogersi), with females reaching larger sizes than males in both species. The DW 50 was estimated at 12.8 and 11.8 cm DW for the males and females of U. maculatus, respectively, whereas for U.rogersi, it was 15.0 and 18.4 cm DW for males and females, respectively. Embryos were found in females ≥14.5 cm DW in both species. The maximum fecundity was five embryos for U. maculatus (mean = 3.1 ± 0.2 S.E., mode = 4), and six embryos for U. rogersi (mean = 3.0 ± 0.3 S.E., mode = 2). Fecundity and embryo size did not vary with maternal size. Male and female immature and mature individuals for both species, including pregnant females, were found in the catches in all seasons of the year. Our results can help determine the vulnerability of the studied species populations to fishing pressure from shrimp trawling in the northern TEP and guide the development of future monitoring strategies and conservation actions for these species, if necessary., (© 2024 The Authors. Little is known about the ecology and distribution of mobulid rays along Brazil's extensive coastline. Here we report opportunistic sightings of manta rays (Mobula cf. birostris) in the Brazilian Amazon estuaries and the Great Amazon Reef System. These sightings consist of manta ray individuals stranded in tide pools, caught in artisanal fisheries, and footage obtained with a submersible. Freshwater fish face a variety of spatiotemporal thermal challenges throughout their life. On a broad scale, temperature is an important driver of physiological, behavioural and ecological patterns and ultimately affects populations and overall distribution. These broad patterns are partly underpinned by the small‐scale local effects of temperature on individuals within the population. Climate change is increasing the range of daily thermal variation in most freshwater ecosystems, altering behaviour and performance of resident fishes. The aim of this review is understanding how daily thermal variation in temperate rivers affects individual fish physiology, behaviour and overall performance. The following are highlighted in this study: (a) the physical characteristics of rivers that can either buffer or exacerbate thermal variability, (b) the effects of thermal variability on growth and metabolism, (c) the approaches for quantifying thermal variation and thermal stress and (d) how fish may acclimatize or adapt to our changing climate. The capacity of fishes to cope with environmental variation is considered to be a main determinant of their fitness and is partly determined by their stress physiology. By 2100, global ocean temperature is expected to rise by 1–4°C, with potential consequences for stress physiology. Global warming is affecting animal populations worldwide through chronic temperature increases and an increase in the frequency of extreme heatwave events. As ectotherms, fishes are expected to be particularly vulnerable to global warming. Although little information is available about the effects of global warming on stress physiology in nature, multiple studies describe the consequences of temperature increases on stress physiology in controlled laboratory conditions, providing insight into what can be expected in the wild. Chronic temperature increase constitutes a physiological load that can alter the ability of fishes to cope with additional stressors, which might compromise their fitness. In addition, rapid temperature increases are known to induce acute stress responses in fishes and might be of ecological relevance in particular situations. To investigate the stress response and physiological adaptations of goldfish (Carassius auratus) to critical salinity (CS) waters, we analyzed high-density lipoprotein (HDL) stoichiometry, stress markers (cortisol, glucose), and plasma osmotic properties (Na + , osmolality, water content) using ichthyology, biochemistry, and proteomics approaches. After 21 days of exposure to CS, plasma concentrations of cortisol, glucose, and Na + increased, indicating stress. Total plasma osmolality (Osm total ) and osmolality generated by inorganic (Osm inorg ) and organic osmolytes (Osm org ) also increased, the latter by ~2%. We associated the increase of Osm org with (1) increased metabolite concentration (glucose), (2) dissociation of HDL particles resulting in increased HDL number per unit plasma volume (~1.5-2-fold) and (3) increased HDL osmotic activity. HDL remodeling may be the reason for the redistribution of bound and free water in plasma, which may contribute to water retention in plasma and, at the same time, to hemodynamic disturbances under CS conditions. Environmental signals act primarily on physiological systems, which then influence higher‐level functions such as movement patterns and population dynamics. Increases in average temperature and temperature variability associated with global climate change are likely to have strong effects on fish physiology and thereby on populations and fisheries. Here we review the principal mechanisms that transduce temperature signals and the physiological responses to those signals in fish. Temperature has a direct, thermodynamic effect on biochemical reaction rates. Nonetheless, plastic responses to longer‐term thermal signals mean that fishes can modulate their acute thermal responses to compensate at least partially for thermodynamic effects. Energetics are particularly relevant for growth and movement, and therefore for fisheries, and temperature can have pronounced effects on energy metabolism. All energy (ATP) production is ultimately linked to mitochondria, and temperature has pronounced effects on mitochondrial efficiency and maximal capacities. Mitochondria are dependent on oxygen as the ultimate electron acceptor so that cardiovascular function and oxygen delivery link environmental inputs with energy metabolism. Growth efficiency, that is the conversion of food into tissue, changes with temperature, and there are indications that warmer water leads to decreased conversion efficiencies. Moreover, movement and migration of fish relies on muscle function, which is partially dependent on ATP production but also on intracellular calcium cycling within the myocyte. Neuroendocrine processes link environmental signals to regulated responses at the level of different tissues, including muscle. These physiological processes within individuals can scale up to population responses to climate change. To investigate the variability in the reproductive tactics of Acıgöl killifish (Aphanius transgrediens), one of the most seriously threatened freshwater teleost species, this study compared its reproductive ecology in two contrasting habitats that differ substantially in terms of stability of environmental parameters, particularly salinity regime (stable vs. unstable). Fish were sampled monthly from October 2013 to September 2014 with the aim of testing whether the reproductive life‐history response of fish to stable and unstable conditions differed. The reproductive effort (gonad weight) of both sexes did not differ significantly between the two habitats, but females in the unstable habitat had significantly lower fecundity and larger eggs. The relationship between fecundity and fish size was stronger in the stable habitat, whereas the relationship was quite variable and uncertain in the unstable habitat. Fish born in the unstable habitat reached their first maturity at a smaller size than those in the stable habitat. The gonado‐somatic index and the duration of hydrated eggs showed that reproduction continued from February to May in both habitats; nonetheless, a second spawning event occurred during July and August in the unstable habitat, which included the reproductive contributions of YOY individuals and older generations. This study's results suggest that A. transgrediens employs varying reproductive strategies against environmental instability in its restricted unique range. The main objective of this study was to investigate if egg size (mass) at spawning is invariant for Scotia‐Fundy summer and autumn (SFSH) and Icelandic summer (ISSH) spawning herring Clupea harengus. Oocyte dry mass measurements for SFSH females collected in 2001 and ISSH females collected in 1999 and 2000 showed a large variation. Difference in egg dry mass among fish was found to vary by as much as twofold in each stock. For ISSH, variation in egg mass was also apparent from oocyte volume measurements made jointly with a histological examination of the ovaries. Approximately 20% of the variation in egg mass could be explained by maternal whole‐body mass or total length, indicating that length or age composition in the stocks can potentially influence the recruitment success. Fishes use a variety of sensory systems to learn about their environments and to communicate. Of the various senses, hearing plays a particularly important role for fishes in providing information, often from great distances, from all around these animals. This information is in all three spatial dimensions, often overcoming the limitations of other senses such as vision, touch, taste and smell. Sound is used for communication between fishes, mating behaviour, the detection of prey and predators, orientation and migration and habitat selection. Thus, anything that interferes with the ability of a fish to detect and respond to biologically relevant sounds can decrease survival and fitness of individuals and populations. Since the onset of the Industrial Revolution, there has been a growing increase in the noise that humans put into the water. These anthropogenic sounds are from a wide range of sources that include shipping, sonars, construction activities (e.g., wind farms, harbours), trawling, dredging and exploration for oil and gas. Anthropogenic sounds may be sufficiently intense to result in death or mortal injury. However, anthropogenic sounds at lower levels may result in temporary hearing impairment, physiological changes including stress effects, changes in behaviour or the masking of biologically important sounds. The intent of this paper is to review the potential effects of anthropogenic sounds upon fishes, the potential consequences for populations and ecosystems and the need to develop sound exposure criteria and relevant regulations. However, assuming that many readers may not have a background in fish bioacoustics, the paper first provides information on underwater acoustics, with a focus on introducing the very important concept of particle motion, the primary acoustic stimulus for all fishes, including elasmobranchs. The paper then provides background material on fish hearing, sound production and acoustic behaviour. This is followed by an overview of what is known about effects of anthropogenic sounds on fishes and considers the current guidelines and criteria being used world‐wide to assess potential effects on fishes. Most importantly, the paper provides the most complete summary of the effects of anthropogenic noise on fishes to date. It is also made clear that there are currently so many information gaps that it is almost impossible to reach clear conclusions on the nature and levels of anthropogenic sounds that have potential to cause changes in animal behaviour, or even result in physical harm. Further research is required on the responses of a range of fish species to different sound sources, under different conditions. There is a need both to examine the immediate effects of sound exposure and the longer‐term effects, in terms of fitness and likely impacts upon populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess how the quality and properties of the natural dissolved organic carbon (DOC) could drive different effects on gill physiology, we analysed the ionoregulatory responses of a native Amazonian fish species, the tambaqui Colossoma macropomum, to the presence of dissolved organic carbon (DOC; 10 mg l−1) at both pH 7.0 and pH 4.0 in ion‐poor water. The DOC was isolated from black water from São Gabriel da Cachoeira (SGC) in the upper Rio Negro of the Amazon (Brazil) that earlier been shown to protect a non‐native species, zebrafish Danio rerio against low pH under similar conditions. Transepithelial potential (TEP), net flux rates of Na+, Cl− and ammonia and their concentrations in plasma and Na+, K+ ATPase; v‐type H+ ATPase and carbonic anhydrase activities in gills were measured. The presence of DOC had negligible effects at pH 7.0 apart from lowering the TEP, but it prevented the depolarization of TEP that occurred at pH 4.0 in the absence of DOC. However, contrary to our initial hypothesis, SGC DOC was not protective against the effects of low pH. Colossoma macropomum exposed to SGC DOC at pH 4.0 experienced greater net Na+ and Cl− losses, decreases of Na+ and Cl− concentrations in plasma and elevated plasma ammonia levels and excretion rates, relative to those exposed in the absence of DOC. Species‐specific differences and changes in DOC properties during storage are discussed as possible factors influencing the effectiveness of SGC DOC in ameliorating the effects of the acid exposure. Stress in teleosts is an increasingly studied topic because of its interaction with growth, reproduction, immune system and ultimately fitness of the animal. Whether it is for evaluating welfare in aquaculture, adaptive capacities in fish ecology, or to investigate effects of human‐induced rapid environmental change, new experimental methods to describe stress physiology in captive or wild fish have flourished. Cortisol has proven to be a reliable indicator of stress and is considered the major stress hormone. Initially principally measured in blood, cortisol measurement methods are now evolving towards lower invasiveness and to allow repeated measurements over time. We present an overview of recent achievements in the field of cortisol measurement in fishes, discussing new alternatives to blood, whole body and eggs as matrices for cortisol measurement, notably mucus, faeces, water, scales and fins. In parallel, new analytical tools are being developed to increase specificity, sensitivity and automation of the measure. The review provides the founding principles of these techniques and introduces their potential as continuous monitoring tools. We made anatomical and physiological observations of the breathing mechanisms in Pacific hagfish Eptatretus stoutii, with measurements of nostril flow and pressure, mouth and pharyngo‐cutaneous duct (PCD) pressure and velum and heart impedance and observations of dye flow patterns. Resting animals frequently exhibit spontaneous apnea. During normal breathing, water flow is continuous at a high rate (~125 ml kg−1 min−1 at 12°C) powered by a two‐phase unidirectional pumping system with a fast suction pump (the velum, ~22 min−1) for inhalation through the single nostril and a much slower force pump (gill pouches and PCD ~4.4 min−1) for exhalation. The mouth joins the pharynx posterior to the velum and plays no role in ventilation at rest or during swimming. Increases in flow up to >400 ml kg−1 min−1 can be achieved by increases in both velum frequency and stroke volume and the ventilatory index (product of frequency x nostril pressure amplitude) provides a useful proxy for ventilatory flow rate. Two types of coughing (flow reversals) are described. During spontaneous swimming, ventilatory pressure and flow pulsatility becomes synchronised with rhythmic body undulations. The zebrafish (Danio rerio, Hamilton, 1822) is one of the most important fish model species in scientific research, with millions of fish housed in laboratory animal facilities around the world. During husbandry, it is necessary to regularly handle the fish, which could cause short- and long-term stress, possibly affecting both fish welfare and experimental outcomes. In two experiments, the authors studied effects of transferring adult zebrafish, by chasing them with a net and/or exposing them to air (netting) on different endpoints: cortisol levels, reproduction parameters and behavioural parameters. They used realistic chase and air-exposure times to mimic normal zebrafish husbandry and investigated the potential to habituate to handling stressors. Finally, the potential welfare improvements of a nutritional reward after handling were studied. All types of handling induced a stress response, but the authors did not find a correlation with the intensity of the stressor. Realistic (short) handling routines also caused stress, both after the first time and after regular handling over a long period of time. Cortisol levels peaked after 15 min, were still elevated after 30 min and dropped to resting level after 60 min. This should be taken into account by researchers when carrying out measurements or behavioural trials within an hour after handling. There is a minor potential benefit of nutritional rewards that may contribute to a faster recovery of normal behaviour. They did not find evidence of habituation to chasing and netting stress. Physiological changes during the parr–smolt transformation were investigated in short distance (Chilliwack River) and long‐distance (Salmon River) migrating coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch populations in British Columbia, Canada. Biochemical and molecular indicators were used to monitor smolt development for fish reared at 10 °C throughout the spring. Fish grew well and developed the physical appearance of competent smolts. Both populations exhibited increases in gill Na+–K+‐ATPase activity (NKA; an important indicator of seawater tolerance) at the same date and the duration of the increase in enzyme activity did not differ between populations. Gill messenger (m)RNA copies for two isoforms of the NKA α subunit, α1a and α1b, showed significant changes and the pattern was similar between populations. Growth hormone receptor and prolactin receptor mRNA from the gill showed modest changes associated with smolting in the spring for both populations, suggesting that these may not be useful indicators of smolt development in hatchery‐reared O. kisutch. Animal‐focused research has been crucial for scientific advancement, but rodents are still taking a starring role. Starting as merely supporting evidence found in rodents, the use of fish models has slowly taken a more central role and expanded its overall contributions in areas such as social sciences, evolution, physiology and recently in translational medical research. In the neurosciences, zebrafish Danio rerio have been widely adopted, contributing to our understanding of the genetic control of brain processes and the effects of pharmacological manipulations. However, discussion continues regarding the paradox of function versus structure, when fishes and mammals are compared and on the potentially evolutionarily conserved nature of behaviour across fish species. From a behavioural standpoint, we explore aversive–stress and social behaviour in selected fish models and refer to the extensive contributions of stress and monoaminergic systems. We suggest that, in spite of marked neuroanatomical differences between fishes and mammals, stress and sociality are conserved at the behavioural and molecular levels. We also suggest that stress and sociality are mediated by monoamines in predictable and non‐trivial ways and that monoamines could bridge the relationship between stress and social behaviour. To reconcile the level of divergence with the level of similarity, we need neuroanatomical, pharmacological, behavioural and ecological studies conducted in the laboratory and in nature. These areas need to add to each other to enhance our understanding of fish behaviour and ultimately how this all may lead to better model systems for translational studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of the present study was to describe histological development of the European long‐snouted seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus, to increase understanding of the biology and physiology of the species. Most vital organs were present in juveniles by the time of their release from the male's pouch. Digestive tract specialization occurred at 89 effective day‐degrees (D°eff), corresponding to 15 days post partum (dpp), with development of the first intestinal loop and mucosal folding. At 118 D°eff (20 dpp), lipids were being mobilized from the liver and oocytes attained the perinuclear stage. The fovea emerged at 177 D°eff (30 dpp), contemporaneous with the shift from pelagic to benthic behaviour in juveniles. At this stage, the most interesting feature was the formation of the second intestinal loop. Male gonads were never observed during the study (from 0 to 354 D°eff; 0–60 dpp), but the first oogonia were present at 30 D°eff (5 dpp). In 354 D°eff (60 dpp) juveniles, oocytes were observed in a cortical alveoli stage, indicating maturity. Low digestive efficiency was observed at early stages, which was due to a poorly developed gastrointestinal tract and an immature digestive tract prior to 89 D°eff. The present study demonstrates that approximately 89 and 177 D°eff represent two important transitional stages in the early development of H. guttulatus. At a temperature of approximately 19 ± 1°C and an age of 1 month (177 D°eff), main organs were fully functional, suggesting that the adult phenotype was largely established by that age, with females becoming mature at the age of 2 months (354 D°eff). The effect of substratum on growth and metabolic rate was assessed in larval white sturgeon Acipenser transmontanus. Yolk‐sac larvae (YSL) were reared in bare tanks or tanks with gravel as substratum from hatch until approximately 16 days post hatch (dph). The effect of an artificial substratum was also evaluated on growth alone. Substratum had a significant effect on mass, with larvae reared in gravel and artificial substrata being larger than those reared without substratum. Routine metabolic rates were significantly lower and relative aerobic scope (the difference between maximum and routine metabolic rate) was significantly higher for YSL and feeding larvae (FL) reared in gravel relative to those reared in bare tanks, particularly before fish started feeding exogenously. Furthermore, gravel‐reared larvae had higher whole‐body glycogen concentrations relative to bare‐tank‐reared larvae. Routine factorial scope (maximum metabolic rate divided by routine metabolic rate) was relatively low in all treatments (< 1·7) indicating a limited ability to elevate metabolic rate above routine early in development and mass exponents for metabolic rate exceeded 1. Taken together, these data indicate that YSL reared without substratum may divert more of their energy to non‐growth related processes impairing growth. This finding underscores the importance of adequate rearing substratum for growth of A. transmontanus and may provide support for habitat restoration and alternative hatchery rearing methods associated with sturgeon conservation. Totoaba Totoaba macdonaldi and shortfin corvina Cynoscion parvipinnis, were acclimated and reared together at salinities of 0, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 35 for 56 days. Initial overall mean ± s.d. body masses of 67·6 ± 7·1 g T. macdonaldi and 37·3 ± 3·1 g C. parvipinnis increased to final overall masses of 217·4 ± 30·3 and 96·5 ± 16·5 g, respectively, at the end of the study. Totoaba macdonaldi was not able to tolerate salinities of 0 and 2 and C. parvipinnis of 0. In contrast, both species had 100% survival at salinities ≥ 10. Somatic growth was highest not at natural seawater salinity of 35, but at 10. Plasma osmolality ranged from 172·5 to 417·0 mOsmol kg−1 for T. macdonaldi and from 207·0 to 439·5 mOsmol kg−1 for C. parvipinnis and varied in direct proportion to salinity. The estimated isosmotic salinities of T. macdonaldi and C. parvipinnis were 12·3 and 13·4, respectively. Cynoscion parvipinnis reared at two had significantly lower plasma lysozyme activity (95·0 Units ml−1) than fish held at salinities from 5 to 35 (ranging from 215·0 to 355·0 Units ml−1), but without clear trends over this range. Blood neutrophil oxidative radical production ( NBT) (ranging from 3·9 to 6·7 mg ml−1) had some significant differences among salinities, but these did not follow a clear pattern. For T. macdonaldi, neither lysozyme activity nor NBT was affected by salinity. Ash content of whole fishes varied directly and moisture content inversely, with salinity for both species. In many experiments, euthanasia, or humane killing, of animals is necessary. Some methods of euthanasia cause death through cessation of respiratory or cardiovascular systems, causing oxygen levels of blood and tissues to drop. For experiments where the goal is to measure the effects of environmental low oxygen (hypoxia), the choice of euthanasia technique, therefore, may confound the results. This study examined the effects of four euthanasia methods commonly used in fish biology (overdose of MS-222, overdose of clove oil, rapid cooling and blunt trauma to the head) on variables known to be altered during hypoxia (haematocrit, plasma cortisol, blood lactate and blood glucose) or reflecting gill damage (trypan blue exclusion) and energetic status ( ATP, ADP and ATP: ADP) in Gulf killifish Fundulus grandis after 24 h exposure to well-aerated conditions (normoxia, 7·93 mg O2 l−1, c. 150 mm Hg or c. 20 kPa) or reduced oxygen levels (0·86 mg O2 l−1, c. 17 mm Hg or c. 2·2 kPa). Regardless of oxygen treatment, fish euthanized by an overdose of MS-222 had higher haematocrit and lower gill ATP: ADP than fish euthanized by other methods. The effects of 24 h hypoxic exposure on these and other variables, however, were equivalent among methods of euthanasia ( i. e. there were no significant interactions between euthanasia method and oxygen treatment). The choice of an appropriate euthanasia method, therefore, will depend upon the magnitude of the treatment effects ( e. g. hypoxia) relative to potential artefacts caused by euthanasia on the variables of interest. A method for quantifying consistent individual differences in schooling behaviour is presented. This method, which utilizes a school of models, improves on previous methods by removing the unwanted variation that is introduced by live stimulus fish while still providing the physiological experience of schooling to the focal fish. The lipid composition of somatic and reproductive tissues was determined for female skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis caught in the western Indian Ocean between latitude 10° N and 20° S and longitude 40° and 70° E. The highest total lipid ( TL) contents were in the liver and gonads, with white muscle levels approximately three-fold lower. Three lipid classes dominated: triacylglycerols ( TAG), sterol esters and wax esters ( SE- WE) and phospholipids ( PL). Collectively, these accounted for between 70 and 80% of TLs. Changes in lipid concentrations were evaluated over the maturation cycle. Immature fish had the lowest gonad and liver TL levels; concentrations of TL, TAG, SE-WE and PL accumulated from immature to mature (spawning-capable) phase, reflecting sustained vitellogenic activity of the liver and a transfer of lipids to developing oocytes from the onset of vitellogenesis. Gonado-somatic and hepato-somatic indices were positively correlated with each other and positively related to TL in the gonads and liver. Fulton's condition index and lipid concentrations in muscle did not vary significantly over the maturation cycle; fat content in the main storage tissues was undepleted as the ovary developed. Hence, K. pelamis apparently supports reproduction directly from food intake over the breeding season. In the gonads, reserve lipids ( SE- WE and TAG) and sterols were related to batch fecundity but this was not the case for somatic and hepatic tissues. The acropomatid genus Verilus is redescribed as a senior synonym of Apogonops and Neoscombrops with description of a new species and a taxonomic revision of the five species that were formerly classified in these genera. This genus is characterized by the following combination of characters: a canine tooth (rarely two) near symphysis of premaxilla of upper jaw but lacking a row of conical teeth on anterior part of outer premaxillary margin; a canine tooth (rarely two) near symphysis of dentary with only villiform or a row of conical teeth posteriorly; three anal-fin spines; 10 dorsal-fin spines; pelvic-fin spine smooth; luminous organ absent. This genus comprises six species: Verilus sordidus (type species, western Atlantic Ocean); Verilus anomalus (off southern and eastern coast of Australia); Verilus atlanticus (western Atlantic Ocean); Verilus cynodon (south-western Indian Ocean); Verilus pacificus (north-western and central Pacific Ocean); Verilus starnesi sp. nov. (Coral Sea off Chesterfield Islands, New Caledonia). These species are distinguishable from one another by dentition on the lower jaw, numbers of pectoral-fin rays, gill rakers and lateral-line scales, features of the proximal-middle radial of the first anal-fin pterygiophore, presence or absence of basioccipital fossa and body depth. This study confirmed that observations of blue-green colouration in plasma fractions of the ballan wrasse Labrus bergylta were caused by the linear tetra-pyrrole biliverdin and that the molecule was of the physiologically relevant IX α isomer. Accumulation appears driven by chromogenic association with an unknown protein moiety which precludes enzymatic reduction and would suggest active management. It was demonstrated that the pigment did not fluctuate relative to ontogeny, or indeed binary gender in the species of interest, but mobilisation and depletion in the subset of individuals undergoing sex change at the time of study supports a potential association with gender inversion processes. It is of note that although biliverdin does have some effect on external colouration, the evidence is indicative that crypsis is a supplementary function thus other factors must be considered. Therefore, when the slow removal of old dams is combined with the production of new dams, with 8,500 new hydropower plants planned in Europe alone (Schäfer et al., 2021), it paints a bleak picture for natural rivers. This study examined the effects of water hardness on the physiological responses associated with high pH exposure in multiple strains of diploid and triploid rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. To accomplish this, three wild strains and one domesticated strain of diploid and triploid O. mykiss were abruptly transferred from control soft water (City of Vancouver dechlorinated tap water; pH 6·7; [ CaCO3] < 17·9 mg l−1) to control soft water (handling control), high pH soft water ( pH 9·5; [ CaCO3] < 17·9 mg l−1), or high pH hard water ( pH 9·5; [ CaCO3] = 320 mg l−1) followed by sampling at 24 h for physiological measurements. There was a significant effect of ploidy on loss of equilibrium ( LOE) over the 24 h exposure, with only triploid O. mykiss losing equilibrium at high pH in both soft and hard water. Furthermore, exposure to pH 9·5 resulted in significant decreases in plasma sodium and chloride, and increases in plasma and brain ammonia with no differences between soft and hard water. There was no significant effect of strain on LOE, but there were significant differences between strains in brain ammonia and plasma cortisol. Two new species of Tometes from the Brazilian Shield rapids are described. Tometes kranponhah is endemic to the Xingu River basin, whereas Tometes ancylorhynchus occurs both in the Xingu and the Tocantins-Araguaia River basins. The two species are sympatric in the Xingu drainages and have many similarities in morphology and colouration. Major diagnostic differences are the dark pigmentation on the opercle of T. kranponhah and its distinct snout shape and arrangement of premaxillary teeth. In addition, T. kranponhah is a large fish that is abundant in the Xingu River, whereas T. ancylorhynchus is a medium-sized fish for which there are few records. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Age and growth of the dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus caught off north-eastern Brazil were studied by counting growth increments on scales and otoliths. A sample ( n = 2338) measuring 7·7-195 cm fork length ( LF) was collected from September 2001 to February 2003. The scales ( n = 69) removed from six different regions of the body were examined and those from the caudal region exhibited greater morphological regularity, symmetry and a smaller rate of regeneration. The regression between caudal scale radius ( RS) and LF displayed was linear ( LF = 28·334 RS + 9·186; r2 = 0·754). Otolith micro-increments were counted assuming daily periodicity. Ages estimated from otoliths ranged from 64 to 659 days. The von Bertalanffy growth model was fitted based on the otolith readings generating L∞ = 194·1 cm LF, k = 0·912 year−1 and t0 = 0·081 years. Species longevity was estimated to be c. 4 years. Ninety-eight per cent of the overall sample was adult specimens well above the age of first maturity in the study area. The large variability between scale length and LF and the failure to ascertain increment deposition periodicity suggest that scales are not appropriate for ageing C. hippurus and analysis of otolith micro-increments is deemed the best structure for ageing this species in the study area. The relationships between changes in habitat quality (disturbed and undisturbed sites) and the population parameters (density, size distribution, reproductive activity and diet) of a goby Microgobius meeki were investigated in a tropical estuary to assess its value as an indicator of anthropogenic changes, predominantly the effects of sedimentation and mangrove removal in shallow estuarine areas. Fish sampling surveys were conducted bimonthly between June 2009 and May 2010 over the entire estuarine gradient of the Paraguaçu River estuary, located on the central Brazilian coast. A predictive model was developed to assess the population changes of this species in 10 other tropical estuaries with different dimensions, basin features and distinct levels of anthropogenic disturbance. General linear models were used to relate the population structure of M. meeki to sediment type, habitat type resulting from mangrove conservation status, anthropogenic pressure and environmental characteristics such as salinity, dissolved oxygen concentrations and temperature. Sediment type and the presence of mangrove forests were the most effective predictors of local variability in the population structure of M. meeki. Individuals with mature gonads and high rates of feeding activity were associated predominantly with undisturbed habitats. Estuaries and estuarine sectors with high levels of sedimentation in shallow marginal areas, anthropogenic pressure from domestic and industrial effluents, and evidence of mangrove deforestation yielded the lowest capture rates of both juvenile and adult M. meeki. Based on these findings, M. meeki is identified as a potential indicator of the consequences of anthropogenic disturbance in transitional waters. A simple, but efficient collection protocol, in which overt signs of distress can be promptly observed is proposed. The order Cyprinodontiformes contains an exceptional diversity of amphibious taxa, including at least 34 species from six families. These cyprinodontiforms often inhabit intertidal or ephemeral habitats characterized by low dissolved oxygen or otherwise poor water quality, conditions that have been hypothesized to drive the evolution of terrestriality. Most of the amphibious species are found in the Rivulidae, Nothobranchiidae and Fundulidae. It is currently unclear whether the pattern of amphibiousness observed in the Cyprinodontiformes is the result of repeated, independent evolutions, or stems from an amphibious common ancestor. Amphibious cyprinodontiforms leave water for a variety of reasons: some species emerse only briefly, to escape predation or capture prey, while others occupy ephemeral habitats by living for months at a time out of water. Fishes able to tolerate months of emersion must maintain respiratory gas exchange, nitrogen excretion and water and salt balance, but to date knowledge of the mechanisms that facilitate homeostasis on land is largely restricted to model species. This review synthesizes the available literature describing amphibious lifestyles in cyprinodontiforms, compares the behavioural and physiological strategies used to exploit the terrestrial environment and suggests directions and ideas for future research. Age and growth of Rhizoprionodon acutus were estimated from vertebrae age bands. From December 2009 to November 2010, 423 R. acutus between 37 and 112 cm total length ( LT) were sampled along the Senegalese coast. Marginal increment ratio was used to check annual band deposition. Three growth models were adjusted to the length at age and compared using Akaike's information criterion. The Gompertz growth model with estimated size at birth appeared to be the best and resulted in growth parameters of L∞ = 139·55 ( LT) and K = 0·17 year−1 for females and L∞ = 126·52 ( LT) and K = 0·18 year−1 for males. The largest female and male examined were 8 and 9 years old, but the majority was between 1 and 3 years old. Ages at maturity estimated were 5·8 and 4·8 years for females and males, respectively. These results suggest that R. acutus is a slow-growing species, which render the species particularly vulnerable to heavy fishery exploitation. The pike Esox lucius is a large, long-lived, iteroparous, top- predator fish species with a circumpolar distribution that occupies a broad range of aquatic environments. This study reports on a literature search and demonstrates that the publication rate of E. lucius research increases both in absolute terms and relative to total scientific output, and that the focus of investigation has changed over time from being dominated by studies on physiology and disease to being gradually replaced by studies on ecology and evolution. Esox lucius can be exploited as a model in future research for identifying causes and consequences of phenotypic and genetic variation at the levels of individuals, populations and species as well as for investigating community processes. A new brain-cell line derived from Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (POBC) was established. POBC was subcultured for 67 passages over the course of 420 days. The cultured cells were primarily epithelioid-like. Chromosome analysis revealed the cell line to possess the normal P. olivaceus diploid karyotype of 2n = 48t (telocentric chromosomes). The cells exhibited the astrocyte marker glial fibrillary acidic protein by immunocytochemistry, and significant fluorescent signals were observed when the cells were transfected with green fluorescent protein reporter plasmid. The established POBC would be ideal material for the study of function of fish ependyma, the central neuroendocrine system and endocrine disruptors in the marine environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The freshwater fish assemblage in most estuaries is not as species rich as the marine assemblage in the same systems. Coupled with this differential richness is an apparent inability by most freshwater fish species to penetrate estuarine zones that are mesohaline (salinity: 5·0-17·9), polyhaline (salinity: 18·0-29·9) or euhaline (salinity: 30·0-39·9). The reason why mesohaline waters are avoided by most freshwater fishes is difficult to explain from a physiological perspective as many of these species would be isosmotic within this salinity range. Perhaps, a key to the poor penetration of estuarine waters by freshwater taxa is an inability to develop chloride cells in gill filament epithelia, as well as a lack of other osmoregulatory adaptations present in euryhaline fishes. Only a few freshwater fish species, especially some of those belonging to the family Cichlidae, have become fully euryhaline and have successfully occupied a wide range of estuaries, sometimes even dominating in hyperhaline systems (salinity 40+). Indeed, this review found that there are few fish species that can be termed holohaline ( i.e. capable of occupying waters with a salinity range of 0-100+) and, of these taxa, there is a disproportionally high number of freshwater species ( e.g. Cyprinodon variegatus, Oreochromis mossambicus and Sarotherodon melanotheron). Factors such as increased competition for food and higher predation rates by piscivorous fishes and birds may also play an important role in the low species richness and abundance of freshwater taxa in estuaries. Added to this is the relatively low species richness of freshwater fishes in river catchments when compared with the normally higher diversity of marine fish species for potential estuarine colonization from the adjacent coastal waters. The almost complete absence of freshwater fish larvae from the estuarine ichthyoplankton further reinforces the poor representation of this guild within these systems. An explanation as to why more freshwater fish species have not become euryhaline and occupied a wide range of estuaries similar to their marine counterparts is probably due to a combination of the above described factors, with physiological restrictions pertaining to limited salinity tolerances probably playing the most important role. In this study, the full‐length neuropeptide Y (npy) complementary (c)DNA was cloned in ya fish Schizothorax prenanti. npy cDNA was composed of 789 nucleotides with a 288 nucleotide open reading frame encoding a protein of 96 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequences contained a 28 amino acids signal peptide followed by a 36 amino acids mature neuropeptide Y (NPY). The npy mRNA was expressed mainly in the brain and eye as detected by real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction RT‐PCR (rt‐qPCR). The S. prenanti NPY was detectable from blastulation to hatch, suggesting that npy might be involved in the late embryonic development of S. prenanti. An experiment was conducted to determine the expression profile of npy during feeding of a single meal and during long‐term fasting. The expression level of npy in fed fish was significantly decreased at 0·5, 1·5, 3 and 9 h post‐feeding (hpf) than in fasting fish. Fasting for 14 days induced an increase in npy messenger (m)RNA expression in the brain. This is the first study investigating the plant-herbivore interaction between Sarpa salpa, which has overgrazed seagrass transplants in Portugal, and the seagrasses Cymodocea nodosa, Zostera marina and Zostera noltii, which have been considered for restoration. When offered the choice between the three seagrasses in outdoor tanks, adult S. salpa clearly preferred Z. noltii. Testing the seagrasses separately, mean ± s.d. feeding rates ranged from 21 ± 11 g seagrass fresh mass kg−1 fish mass day−1 for Z. marina to 32 ± 9 g seagrass fresh mass kg−1 fish mass day−1 for C. nodosa and 40 ± 11 g seagrass fresh mass kg−1 fish mass day−1 for Z. noltii (temperature = 16° C). Food-processing rate in S. salpa did not differ between seagrasses, and there was no evidence of a regulation of processing rate according to food intake. Seagrasses differed substantially in nitrogen content and C:N, with C. nodosa containing the highest nitrogen content and lowest C:N (2·5 ± 0·1% and 14·0 ± 1·0), followed by Z. noltii (2·1 ± 0·1% and 17·0 ± 1·0) and Z. marina (1·4 ± 0·1% and 26·0 ± 2·0). Food-processing rate in S. salpa and the nutritional value of the seagrasses were not correlated with the observed feeding preference and rate. The study suggests that C. nodosa and Z. marina are less at risk of overgrazing by S. salpa and might thus be preferable to Z. noltii for seagrass restoration in areas with noticeable abundances of this fish. Several taxonomically disparate groups of fishes have evolved the ability to extract oxygen from the air with elements of their gut. Despite perceived difficulties with balancing digestive and respiratory function, gut air breathing ( GAB) has evolved multiple times in fishes and several GAB families are among the most successful fish families in terms of species numbers. When gut segments evolve into an air-breathing organ ( ABO), there is generally a specialized region for exchange of gases where the gut wall has diminished, vascularization has increased, capillaries have penetrated into the luminal epithelium and surfactant is produced. This specialized region is generally separated from digestive portions of the gut by sphincters. GAB fishes tend to be facultative air breathers that use air breathing to supplement aquatic respiration in hypoxic waters. Some hindgut breathers may be continuous, but not obligate air breathers (obligate air breathers drown if denied access to air). Gut ABOs are generally used only for oxygen uptake; CO2 elimination seems to occur via the gills and skin in all GAB fishes studied. Aerial ventilation in GAB fishes is driven primarily by oxygen partial pressure of the water ( PO2) and possibly also by metabolic demand. The effect of aerial ventilation on branchial ventilation and the cardiovascular system is complex and generalizations across taxa or ABO type are not currently possible. Blood from GAB fishes generally has a low blood oxygen partial pressure that half saturates haemoglobin ( p50) with a very low erythrocytic nucleoside triphosphate concentration [ NTP]. During the past decade, the culture of air-breathing fish species has increased dramatically and is now a significant global source of protein for human consumption. This development has generated a need for specific information on how to maximize growth and minimize the environmental effect of culture systems. Here, the existing data on metabolism in air-breathing fishes are reviewed, with the aim of shedding new light on the oxygen requirements of air-breathing fishes in aquaculture, reaching the conclusion that aquatic oxygenation is much more important than previously assumed. In addition, the possible effects on growth of the recurrent exposure to deep hypoxia and associated elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide, ammonia and nitrite, that occurs in the culture ponds used for air-breathing fishes, are discussed. Where data on air-breathing fishes are simply lacking, data for a few water-breathing species will be reviewed, to put the physiological effects into a growth perspective. It is argued that an understanding of air-breathing fishes' respiratory physiology, including metabolic rate, partitioning of oxygen uptake from air and water in facultative air breathers, the critical oxygen tension, can provide important input for the optimization of culture practices.
