Parents experience differentiated emotions after learning of their child's abuse; however, little is known about the effect of trauma therapy on these differentiated reactions and the factors associated with these reactions. This study examined the impact of child trauma therapy on parents' distress, guilt, and shame over the course of treatment and following treatment, the correlates of these emotional reactions before treatment, and the correlates of changes in these reactions. The sample at pre-therapy included 92 trauma-exposed children (68.90% female, Mage = 9.58 years, 38.10% Caucasian) and their parents receiving Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT). Parents rated their distress, guilt, and shame, their functioning (stress-levels, parent support), and their child's functioning (emotion regulation and internalizing/externalizing symptoms) at pre-therapy, post-therapy, and 6-month follow-up. Significant modest-to-large improvements in parent distress, guilt, and shame were found immediately following TF-CBT and from pre-therapy to 6-month follow up. Parent and child functioning, as well as characteristics of the child's abuse, accounted for a significant proportion of the variance in parents' distress, guilt, and shame prior to treatment, with child internalizing symptoms being a consistent correlate. Changes in parent support and child internalizing symptoms were associated with changes in parent distress and shame over the course of TF-CBT, and changes in child externalizing symptoms were associated with changes in parents' shame from pre-therapy to follow-up. Improvements in parents' discrete emotional reactions were observed throughout TF-CBT and months after therapy has ended. This study reports on the results of a program evaluation of the U.S. Navy New Parent Support Program (NPSP). NPSP is comprised of two components: center-based parenting classes and home-based visits. Data are presented on: (a) satisfaction with program quality, (b) how well the program met its primary objectives (e.g., helps reduce parenting stress), (c) how well the NPSP met its Reasons for Being (RFBs; e.g., Helps service members concentrate on their job), and (d) program impact on mission-related outcomes (i.e., quality of life (QOL), readiness, and program impact on their decision to remain in the military). Results indicate that parents who take part in both the parenting classes and home-based visits report that the program exceeded their expectations, the program improved their perceptions of their parenting and coping skills, they perceived that the program demonstrated the Navy’s concern for Sailors and their families, and the program enhanced the family’s quality of life. Previous research on corporal punishment has failed to consider the interaction of parent support and parent gender in predicting child outcomes. The current study examined whether parental support moderated the effects of corporal punishment on child outcomes (i.e., depression and aggression), and more specifically, whether the gender of the supportive parent moderated the effects of punishment from the opposite-sex parent. Results differed depending on the gender of the punishing and supportive parents, suggesting that parental support can be a protective factor in child outcomes but only under certain conditions. Mother support moderated the effects of father punishment on child depression but not child aggression. High corporal punishment by father was related to more child depression at both high and low levels of mother support. High levels of mother support only seemed important (i.e., children were less depressed) at low levels of father corporal punishment. In contrast, father support moderated the relationship between mother corporal punishment and child aggression but not depression. Children with high father support showed less aggression across all levels of mother corporal punishment. At low levels of father support, child aggression increased as mother corporal punishment increased. For depression, mother corporal punishment was positively related to child depression regardless of level of father support. These findings suggest differential effects for mother and father support and have implications for the treatment and prevention of negative outcomes in children who are physically punished by their parents.
