Real-world scenes elicit anticipatory representation in long-term memory (LTM) and working memory (WM) resulting in boundary extension (BE). Would the same results hold for nonscene patterns of objects? In Experiment 1A (LTM-paradigm), 15 regular or 15 random object-patterns were sequentially presented (10 s each); a boundary-rating-task followed. Both pattern-types elicited BE. Surprisingly, regularity (greater pattern predictability) did not enhance BE. Instead, random patterns more consistently yielded BE. Perhaps random object-groupings enhance BE (e.g., more scene-like). Objects within regular patterns were colored to create object-groupings; this increased BE compared to regular patterns without color groups, but only in 1 of the 2 tests (Experiment 1B, LTM-paradigm). In Experiment 2 (WM-paradigm), a briefly presented pattern, regular or random, was followed by a 2-s masked interval and a boundary-rating-task on each trial. Here, results reversed: patterns now elicited boundary restriction (whether or not a concurrent task had been presented to prevent verbalization). Under time pressure, without real-world layout and meaning, pattern elements may not have cohered into a unified expanse, failing to elicit BE and resulting in loss of peripheral content. We propose 2 classes of visual content that may determine anticipatory representation: content that embellishes space versus content that defines space. Public Significance Statement: When viewing real-world scenes, the brain anticipates surrounding layout; this study showed that novel patterns also elicited anticipatory representation given sufficient time, but not when the same patterns were briefly presented. Not only was anticipatory processing halted, but also participants lost memory for the peripheral elements of the patterns. This demonstrates the critical role of top-down knowledge and expectations in supporting anticipatory representation, which may be crucial for a moving observer's successful interaction with the surrounding world. The ability to navigate without getting lost is an important aspect of quality of life. In 5 studies, we evaluated how spatial learning is affected by the increased demands of keeping oneself safe while walking with degraded vision (mobility monitoring). We proposed that safe low vision mobility requires attentional resources, providing competition for those needed to learn a new environment. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants navigated along paths in a real-world indoor environment with simulated degraded vision or normal vision. Memory for object locations seen along the paths was better with normal compared with degraded vision. With degraded vision, memory was better when participants were guided by an experimenter (low monitoring demands) versus unguided (high monitoring demands). In Experiments 3 and 4, participants walked while performing an auditory task. Auditory task performance was superior with nonnal compared with degraded vision. With degraded vision, auditory task performance was better when guided compared with unguided. In Experiment 5, participants performed both the spatial learning and auditory tasks under degraded vision. Results showed that attention mediates the relationship between mobility-monitoring demands and spatial learning. The Simon effect refers to the relatively poorer response times and accuracy when responding to targets that appear in a task-irrelevant spatial location that is incongruent with the location of the correct response key, compared with targets that appear in spatially congruent locations. Like Stroop and flanker effects, the Simon effect is thought to result from conflict between an irrelevant response tendency and an intended response. Because attentional control has been linked to conflict resolution, the Simon task has been proffered as a possible tool for measuring the efficacy of executive control mechanisms. These mechanisms are also involved in working memory (WM) processes, and are thought to be responsible for maintaining information in the presence of continued processing or distraction. The present study investigated the interface between WM and attention by examining the time course of the Simon effect over the response time distributions under varying WM load conditions. Participants completed verbal 0-back, spatial 0-back, verbal 2-back, and spatial 2-back tasks. Results show that the Simon effect is diminished in high WM load tasks compared with low-load tasks, and that the Simon effect interacts with the spatial task domain such that the effect persists across the distribution of response times. In contrast, the Simon effect peaks and decays in verbal tasks. The results demonstrate that the Simon effect interacts with WM load and task domain. Visual tracking abilities are limited to only a few objects at a time. When do errors arise? We hypothesized that some errors arise prior to tracking; specifically, during the first moments of a trial because of an inability to correctly perceive the number of targets in a display. To test this hypothesis, we modified a basic multiple object tracking (MOT) task in two ways: (1) we distilled the first moments of MOT into a static working memory task, requiring participants to remember and then identify targets among nontargets in displays without motion; (2) we unconstrained the number of responses a participant could make, asking them to terminate each trial when they felt that they had made an adequate number of responses. In Experiment I, participants made the wrong number of responses in a considerable number of trials, and they tendered the wrong number of responses more frequently with larger loads. Comparisons across different delay durations demonstrated that these results were not caused by temporal decay. Follow-up experiments produced similar results when participants stated the cardinal number of targets perceived in a static trial (Experiment 2), and when they reported whether or not a test display included the same number of targets as a memory display (Experiment 3). Finally, with a typical tracking duration, participants also produced the wrong number of responses frequently (Experiment 4). Thus, some of the difficulty associated with MOT originates from uncertainty about the number of targets at the start of an episode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Caparos and Linnell (2009, 2010) used a variable-separation flanker paradigm to show that (a) when cognitive load is low, increasing perceptual load causes spatial attention to focus and (b) when perceptual load is high, decreasing cognitive load causes spatial attention to focus. Here, we tested whether the effects of perceptual and cognitive load on spatial focus remain when, respectively, cognitive load is high and perceptual load is low. We found that decreasing cognitive load only causes spatial attention to focus when perceptual load is high and the stimulus encourages this. Moreover, and contrary to the widely held assumption that perceptual load focuses attention automatically (Lavie, Hirst, de Fockert, & Viding, 2004), perceptual load exerts its focusing effect only with the engagement of cognitive resources when cognitive load is low. In a contextual cuing paradigm, we examined how memory for the spatial structure of a natural scene guides visual search. Participants searched through arrays of objects that were embedded within depictions of real-world scenes. If a repeated search array was associated with a single scene during study, then array repetition produced significant contextual cuing. However, expression of that learning was dependent on instantiating the original scene in which the learning occurred: Contextual cuing was disrupted when the repeated array was transferred to a different scene. Such scene-specific learning was not absolute, however. Under conditions of high scene variability, repeated search array were learned independently of the scene background. These data suggest that when a consistent environmental structure is available, spatial representations supporting visual search are organized hierarchically, with memory for functional subregions of an environment nested within a representation of the larger scene. Two experiments investigated whether the spatial reference directions that are used to specify objects' locations in memory can be solely determined by layout geometry. Participants studied a layout of objects from a single viewpoint while their eye movements were recorded. Subsequently, participants used memory to make judgments of relative direction (e.g., "Imagine you are standing at X, facing Y, please point to Z"). When the layout had a symmetric axis that was different from participants' viewing direction, the sequence of eye fixations on objects during learning and the preferred directions in pointing judgments were both determined by the direction of the symmetric axis. How rapidly does boundary extension occur? Across experiments, trials included a 3-scene sequence (325 ms/picture), masked interval, and repetition of 1 scene. The repetition was the same view or differed (more close-up or wide angle). Observers rated the repetition as same as, closer than, or more wide angle than the original view on a 5-point scale. Masked intervals were 100, 250, 625, or 1,000 ms in Experiment 1 and 42, 100, or 250 ms in Experiments 2 and 3. Boundary extension occurred in all cases: Identical views were rated as too "close-up," and distractor views elicited the rating asymmetry typical of boundary extension (wider angle distractors were rated as being more similar to the original than were closer up distractors). Most important, boundary extension was evident when only a 42-ms mask separated the original and test views. Experiments 1 and 3 included conditions eliciting a gaze shift prior to the rating test; this did not eliminate boundary extension. Results show that boundary extension is available soon enough and is robust enough to play an on-line role in view integration, perhaps supporting incorporation of views within a larger spatial framework. Three experiments investigated the acquisition and retention of structural and object landmarks in virtual indoor environments. The experiments investigated the rate of acquisition and memory retention for hallway structure (structural landmarks) and pictures (object landmarks). The experiments investigated the rate of acquisition, the role of information content, and memory retention of this information when participants were trained and tested in novel virtual indoor environments. The results from these experiments suggest that (a) even initially, participants are biased toward encoding building structure over object landmarks; (b) participants are sensitive to the information content of landmarks and will allocate memory resources to landmarks that are more informative; and (c) information about these landmarks is retained even after a 1-year delay. Nine experiments examined the means by which visual memory for individual objects is structured into a larger representation of a scene. Participants viewed images of natural scenes or object arrays in a change detection task requiring memory for the visual form of a single target object. In the test image, 2 properties of the stimulus were independently manipulated: the position of the target object and the spatial properties of the larger scene or array context. Memory performance was higher when the target object position remained the same from study to test. This same-position advantage was reduced or eliminated following contextual changes that disrupted the relative spatial relationships among contextual objects (context deletion, scrambling, and binding change) but was preserved following contextual change that did not disrupt relative spatial relationships (translation). Thus, episodic scene representations are formed through the binding of objects to scene locations, and object position is defined relative to a larger spatial representation coding the relative locations of contextual objects. The authors describe 3 human spatial navigation experiments that investigate how limitations of perception, memory, uncertainty, and decision strategy affect human spatial navigation performance. To better understand the effect of these variables on human navigation performance, the authors developed an ideal-navigator model for indoor navigation whose optimizing algorithm uses a partially observable Markov decision process. The model minimizes the number of actions (translations and rotations) required to move from an unknown starting state to a specific goal state in indoor environments that have perceptual ambiguity. The authors compared the model's performance with that of the human observer to measure human navigation efficiency. Experiment 1 investigated the effect of increasing the layout size on spatial way-finding efficiency and found that participants' efficiencies decreased as layout size increased. The authors investigated whether this reduction in navigation efficiency was due to visual perception (Experiment 2), memory, spatial updating strategy, or decision strategy (Experiment 3).
