Water will be a major limitation to food production in the 21st century, and drought issues already prevail in many parts of the world. Finding solutions to ensure that farmers harvest profitable crops, and secure food supplies for families and feed for animals that will provide for them through to the next season are urgent necessities. The Interdrought community has been addressing this issue for almost 30 years in a series of international conferences, characterized by a multi-disciplinary approach across the domains of molecular biology, physiology, genetics, agronomy, breeding, environmental and social sciences, policy, and systems modeling. This special issue presents papers from the 7th edition of the conference, the first to be held in Africa, that paid special attention to drought in a smallholder context, adding a 'system' dimension to the crop focus from the previous Interdrought events (Varshney et al. , 2018 ; Hammer et al. , 2021). Lepidopteran stemborers and parasitic weeds in the genus Striga are major constraints to efficient production of cereals, the most important staple food crops in Africa. Smallholder farmers are resource constrained and unable to afford expensive chemicals for crop protection. Development of a push–pull approach for integrated pest and weed management is reviewed here. Appropriate plants were discovered that naturally emit signalling chemicals (semiochemicals). Plants highly attractive for egg laying by stemborer pests were selected and employed as trap crops (pull), to draw pests away from the main crop. Of these, Napier grass, Pennisetum purpureum (Schumach), despite its attractiveness, supported minimal survival of the pests’ immature stages. Plants that repelled stemborer pests, notably molasses grass, Melinis minutiflora P. Beauv., and forage legumes in the genus Desmodium, were selected as intercrops (push). Desmodium intercrops suppress Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. through an allelopathic mechanism. Their root exudates contain novel flavonoid compounds, which stimulate suicidal germination of S. hermonthica seeds and dramatically inhibit its attachment to host roots. The companion crops provide valuable forage for farm animals while the leguminous intercrops also improve soil fertility and moisture retention. The system is appropriate as it is based on locally available plants, not expensive external inputs, and fits well with traditional mixed cropping systems in Africa. To date it has been adopted by more than 30 000 smallholder farmers in East Africa where maize yields have increased from ∼1 t ha−1 to 3.5 t ha−1. Although nodulated legumes have been used by indigenous peoples in Africa for centuries, their full potential has never been realized. With modern technology there is scope for rapid improvement of both plant and microbial germplasm. This review gives examples of some recent developments in the form of case studies; these range from multipurpose human food crops, such as cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), through to beverages (teas) that are also income-generating such as rooibos (Aspalathus linearis (Burm. f.) R. Dahlgren, honeybush (Cyclopia Vent. spp.), and the widely used food additive gum arabic (Acacia senegal (L.) Willd.). These and other potential crops are well-adapted to the many different soil and climatic conditions of Africa, in particular, drought and low nutrients. All can nodulate and fix nitrogen, with varying degrees of effectiveness and using a range of bacterial symbionts. The further development of these and other species is essential, not only for African use, but also to retain the agricultural diversity that is essential for a changing world that is being increasingly dominated by a few crops such as soybean. Rubber has been grown for several decades in Africa, notably in Ivory Coast. Although the yields obtained with selected clones are good, some problems with adaptation to edaphic and climatic conditions have yet to be solved. Of these problems, tree breakage due to violent winds during frequent storms is a major handicap. Some clones are more resistant to wind damage. However, this resistance trait remains difficult to measure, and detecting it at an early stage appeared important. As no differences have been found in the physical properties of the wood of different clones, the search for differences between clones displaying resistance and susceptibility to wind damage was switched to architectural structures. Architectural traits were thus studied on two rubber clones with very different resistances to wind. Observations were focused both on young trees and adult trees. Of all the architectural traits observed, a description of branching provided information likely to explain differences in the way the clones being studied developed over time. The clone GT1 which is resistant to wind, developed more lateral branches but they did not grow much in length. On the other hand, fewer axillary branches appeared on the susceptible clone PB235 but they grew longer. Moreover, as some of these traits proved to be similar in both young and adult trees, they could be detected at a sufficiently early stage for use as early prediction traits, if their involvement in susceptibility to wind damage is confirmed.
